Great video. Been binging all your videos all weekend. Love em all. Keep it up. 💯
Glad you enjoyed em!
I grew up in the 1960s and loved the influences of the people of Laurel Canyon. Really, they were not just musicians. They were artists who changed culture. Thank you for doing this video. I must go there and film some Laurel Canyon history myself.
It is such a great feeling to just walk around up there. The views, the quiet, it even smells inspiring.
Smells like a lot of death lol
Love that these homes are still there and the people who show and appreciate them and the musical history they represent. Such a magical period in time!
Its amazing any of them are left. People are buying them and tearing them down to build modern houses one after another. That's why there is no big music scene up there any longer. Musicians can't afford it. That said, its still a great place to take a walk in.
Great video but show the homes and properties more instead of keying on whos talking. Its a tour of Laurel Canyons history!
@@KnockOffBeingFat So you're saying the houses are more interesting than my big mouth? You're prolly right!
@@RockessentialTim I'm wondering how these young musicians, at the time, could afford these houses? Was this area considered inexpensive, low rent at the time? OR, had they all hit it big, money wise, at this point? What's the history before they made it famous?
@@salgaldenco It was cheap to live there back in the day. There have always been a few posh estates up there--Houdini, Ginger Rodgers, Bela Lugosi, but there were a lot of funky wooden cottages too. One by one they've been tearing them down and rebuilding lot to lot McMansions. As you can see in the video the Mamma Cass house we show is the one she lived in before they hit it big. Its still a funky little place that no one would confuse with a mansion. Still, my guess is that little 2 bedroom house is worth about 1.3 million today.
I love this! As a fellow long time musician, I feel like I could sit down and fall right into the conversation with you and Randy. What a cool part of music history in the canyon!
Thank you. I love all the music history in the Canyon cuz its all so close together. I mean virtually every other house had some kind of obscure history and I just didn't have the wherewithal to record all of it. I am an infrequent visitor but Randy has lived there all his life!
More great Laurel Canyon Rock N Roll History ! Thanks Tim and Randy !
The walking tour is so much better than the driving tour we can understand the history better man this great I grew up in the sixty s living in Nashville tn was more about classic rock
Hi Tim, Brad from New Westminster here and I just want to say that my wife Kathy and I are really interested in the Laurel Canyons music scene back in the day. We’re really digging your informative walkabouts. Thank you.
Hey thanks, guys. I love making them and I'm so glad you commented!
Great video Tim. I would love to see these places and certainly to have lived there in the 60s/70s would have been amazing. No wonder Randy is the most laid back person ever.
Thanks much. Randy is truly what I would describe as a quality person!
Harold and Maude is truly a gem of a movie.
Totally!
One of my favorite films of all time. I am always ready to watch it again. There's no other film quite like it - to say the least, lol.
Holy Cow! Tim I ran across your page totally by accident. For years I've loved the history of Laurel Canyon. I worked as a disc jockey in Chicago way back in the late 80s and early 90s. I've always dreamed of visiting the area and doing a deep dive into rock and roll history. I'm 52 now and this is still on my bucket list to visit or maybe if I'm ever lucky enough to own a place there. There's only a few places that I consider magical rock nirvana.. Woodstock NY, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco and Laurel Canyon California. With people like you out there doing this Rock music will never die .. Long Live Rock! 🎸🤘
I'm really glad you like it! I'm actually from Detroit and have done a video on it ruclips.net/video/d1-ojtbfj1Q/видео.html But I intend on going to Chicago and doing a video there, possibly in 23. I love the blues history of the city. Thanks again for the kind comment!
@@RockessentialTim That would be a sweet episode... Chess Records, Muddy Waters Home in Westmont, Kingston Mines etc...
Then the rock history.. Cheap Trick, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Smashing Pumpkins.. LoL.. You would need a few episodes...
This evokes the atmosphere and spirit of the 60's. I would love to time travel and meet Jim Morrisson!
I would love to time travel and hang out with Ray Manzarek!
@@RockessentialTim that short video of Ray walking in Venice is so rad! Cool to see him show what really made that area great for so many people before the whole shit house went up in flames! Ray got his kicks for sure!
Love hearing the history of this magical place!
There really isn't anywhere else like it, is there?
The dog is adorable!

Hi. Thank you for these great little video tours. I've watched them many times and every time I see something new. The thing I love the most though is seeing two friends together just having a great time. Thanks again guys. Love from London
Trust me, they are my pleasure!
@@RockessentialTim and they are a pleasure to watch. I'm hoping to make it back to LA later this year. Gonna base myself in the canyon and follow your trails.
great job guys love this stuff keep it up
Great video guys. Jazzman always puts me in a good mood. Cheers James.
haha..I grew up with 3 sisters and Carole King, Melanie, and Cat Stevens were always playing..
Me too and I still love em all!
Good stuff Tim, I visit L.A. a few times a year and I'm really digging your videos. In fact.... I've binge watched just about everything you have this weekend. Your extensive knowledge of the music business made me dig a little deeper into who Tim P. is and low and behold I discovered Flies on Fire, a band you can be proud of. Keep on doing what you're doing Tim! DB
Thanks man. Yeah, my past does catch up with me once in awhile but its all good!
Watching the Laurel Canyon doc on Epix now. Really well done. Henry Diltz is a total star!
Hiking4Life I just watched it last night way before my time but I got into the music of the 50’s and 60’s around jr high
Watching the documentary then seeing this video like a before and after type thing lol. very good video Thank you
@@christophervalenti5214 Believe it or not, it was a couple years before my time too but I love the music nonetheless. Thanks for watching!
Hiking4Life your welcome thanks for doing these videos
@Hiking4Life I was a kid in Hermosa Beach while the Laurel Canyon scene was unspooling, much to my envy!
@@lesliegmn3927 There is something to be said for the Hermosa Beach scene back then too!
Wow! Loved this, I grew up in the canyon as well, so this brought back tons of memories! Parents were divorced, and dad moved a lot, so I lived all over the canyon-Grandview, Stanley Hills, Lookout Mountain, Wonderland Park! ❤️
Did you happen to know the guy I did the video with, Randy?
Hiking4Life I don’t believe so. Then again my memory is the pits. I was born in 64- I’m 55. So not sure if there was an age difference.
10 years difference so prolly not.
PS: Loved your channel!
Hiking4Life Thank you! Love yours too!
That was soo great!! On my one trip to L.A. 10 years ago i had driven around hoping to discover some historic rock homes but of course had no reference to anything. So this was an Awesome treat. Loved it!! Wish I’d lived around there back in the day! Thanks Guys!!!
Thanks, it was really enjoyable to make.
I love walking, music and history. I struck gold when I found this channel by chance. Very cool Laurel Canyon insights.
I'm glad you like it. We obviously love the same things (I also love guitars).

We're all the way up to episode #6 on our sister channel, Rock Essentials With Tim. Check it our here: ruclips.net/video/frHWFcwUz8Q/видео.html
Thanks so much for making these videos Tim and Randy! I’m gradually watching all of them and look forward to watching the Doors one next. My favourite house is the Jim Ladd one, with the classic kind of wooden front with arches. Amazing music biz education for those of us who’ve never been to Laurel Canyon. am reading the Dave MacG book.\ (from Australia.) 🌝 🎸
Thank you so, so much for your kind comments. These videos, especially the ones with Randy are so much fun to do. When Covid is over here in the States we'll get together and do more together. Thank you again!
@@RockessentialTim Thanks for your reply and happy video making in\and ‘21.
I love hiking around there
Another great film by Hal Ashby is 'Being There,' starring Peter Sellers and Shirley McClain. BTW, the music was pretty good in that film too.
Who did the music in it, do you know?
All these years (70 of them) I never realized that the Byrds "I Wasn't Born to Follow" was penned by Goffin & King. Amazing. May have been written when Goffin was experimenting with mescaline and LSD (which could explain the psychedelic-type lyrics)
I did not know that. Interesting to say the least!
Great vid! Thank you!
Thank you so much! We're working on one about the Doors right now. Can't wait to finish it.
I lived there in 1966
Really great stuff, love your perspective and personalities... great stories. Why isn't this in syndication... soo good!
Thanks!
Used to downhill skate Laurel as well as Coldwater back in the 70s. Valet parked cars @ parties on Lookout. Zappa was down by Donna Marta off Laurel. There and nude Topanga were my early memories. MK ULTRA. YEW!
This is a great channel chief.....congrats
Thank you much!
The laurel canyon Doc out now is fascinating, must watch if you like the 60s scene
Just stumbled on you on RUclips. Love your program
Well, I think its better to be stumbled on than to🙂🙂 be stumbled over. Thanks!
I’ll be staying at Fritzi Ridgeway property on Lookout Mountain in November!
Why's this so magical.
Gotta check out lookout mountain laboratory the declassified military facility hidden in laurel canyon
So cool. I heard that the actor Jared Leto bought it. Its on Wonderland. We drove by it but didn't get into much detail.
great stuff love the trail of legends here
Thank you very much. Cheers.
You are my favorite person to invite for a dinner when I am in LA next time.
Hi I'm from the UK and love your channel. Would love to visit Laurel C one day. You should do a video about Eden Ahbez and the nature boys. Oh man if only we had a time machine and go back. Keep up the good work.
Hey , Just stumbled across your site tonight .. Love It !! I think Marshall Chess had something to do with The Stones movie ... These are just all great episodes !! Thanks Jimmy ....
Would love to get to Chicago one day and explore Chess and Maxwell St and all that cool stuff.
I am sure it was amazing to be there back then, if you were of the right age and interests.
I lived on lookout my 1966
Talk about how all those rock stars father's were all high ranking military, Morrison etc
Every girl I ever met in the 70s had the Tapestry album. And also The Best Of Bread. Chick record or not, Tapestry is a great record. I loved “Harold & Maude”. Too bad people didn’t appreciate it when it came out. I love the Jaguar XKE hearse conversion in it. Where is that car now, I wonder.
I just saw Harold & Maude again and it really holds up well. It doesn't seem dated at all.
Would love to have the address in all 4 parts. Thanks for the videos
I know, after much thought we kinda left em out on purpose. That said, they're easy enough to find if you follow the tour.
Fascinating bit of music history! It was nice to see the house that Cass lived in before the famous one on Woodrow Wilson. I can’t help wondering what was her reaction when she came home to find the house had been cleaned - I think she might have felt a bit invaded and embarrassed - not a very nice thing for Michelle to do really!
When the Covid lockdown is over here in Los Angeles we're gonna try to explore the other Mamma Cass house. Its got quite a bit of history.
@@RockessentialTim That would be great to see! Indeed I think the other one (7708 Woodrow Wilson) has a very interesting history - if the walls could talk they would have some amazing stories to tell :) Apparently Dan Akroyd was inspired to write Ghostbusters after he lived there and thought it was haunted by the ghost of Cass. I think he has a very active imagination!
Michelle told the story in an interview (in Vanity Fair, I believe), and says Cass never even mentioned the kitchen clean-up!
Leslie GMN Yes, I read that article. It sounds like it was one of those _’I know, and I know you know that I know, so let’s say no more about it’_ things - I really can’t imagine she was terribly happy about it.
Possible that 'Tim' is really Graham Nash?

Weird things in the canyon is the book if your interested in this topic
Dave McGowan. I haven't read the whole book but I've seen some excerpts. Heavy stuff. I need to read the whole thing, thanks!
Weird I am halfway through the book.
Changes the way you see these bands, not what we thought, in my opinion.
This was cool seeing the homes and areas spoken about in the book.
Strange place.
did you know the late singer Dan Fogelberg in laurel canyon on 8778 lookout mountain ave an cross from Henry drietz . away in Hollywood hills did lived late singer and actor David cassidy
I did not know that! I did know about David Cassidy though.
David Cassidy also had a house near where I live on the Studio City side of Laurel Canyon. I know the street but not the address.
Hi Hiking, what do you know about the many musicians living in the Canyon who had family ties to power in DC i.e., Jim Morrison's dad being a Navy admiral during the Vietnam war?
Well, you can't research anything about Laurel Canyon without coming across Dave McGowan's book. God bless him but I'm just not a conspiracy kinda guy.
…I want someone to film a new version of ‘harold and maude.’ it’s time.
Maybe, but its gonna be hard to redo a perfect movie (and perhaps a bit sacreligious too)
where the Rolling Stones House?
After Cass Elliot moved out of her Laurel Canyon house didn't she buy another house in Nichols Canyon?
She moved to Woodrow Wilson Drive which connects Laurel Canyon to Nichols Canyon. I don't know that she moved after that one.
Didn't they have problems with tonnes of fans hanging around?
The only person I've heard of that had problems with fans showing up at his Laurel Canyon house was David Cassidy. Tons of girls. Poor guy!
David Casdidy had a house there is it still there?
He had one on Wonderland that we tried hard to find but couldn't find the exact address.
@@RockessentialTim oh such a shame
He also had a house here on the Studio City side of Laurel Canyon. I know the street but not the address. Very close to where I live though.
Zappas house?
Check out part 2. Its still an empty lot but its pretty cool.
The CIA created and managed the counterculture movement, read Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream by David McGowan.
I've read it. Its very entertaining but not very believable.
@@RockessentialTim i think the book brings up some points that make sense but he doesn't try to make a complete conclusion, which i respect. i also have read John Coleman's Committee of 300, and specifically the info on the Tavistock Institute, the Beatles, Military intelligence, and some early pioneers of government and scientific community agents and projects, like MK Ultra, Mind Control, LSD, and social engineering and culture creating movements. thanks for doing all of these tours and historical background into the music scene.

Love this video! As an east cost transplant to LA, I love old LA history especially the 60’s Music scene! I’ve driven Laurel Canyon many times and stopped at the general store, you can still feel the vibe in the place! I would also recommend “ Echo in the Canyon” an amazing movie/documentary with Jacob Dylan, Bob Dylan’s son!!
I loved Echo. I liked it better than the Laurel Canyon doc that came out after it. Usually when they rework old songs its just not my thing but Jakob Dylan did such a kick=ass job on it I liked some of the songs even better!
@@RockessentialTim I agree 100%

Really love your stuff man! Learning so much from the content! I have not seen any Hal Ashby stuff, so I’ll be sure to check those flicks out. Harold and Maude sounds great.
Glad I found this channel. Going to check out all these places. ✔
Doesn't it seem odd that so many counter culture figures Carole King, Cass Elliot, The Mamas And The Papas, Hal Ashby, The Rolling Stones, members of The Doors, The Monkees, CS&N, David Crosby, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa.. they all had powerful parents, most of which were connected to the military.. and they lived in the same geographic community, you think it was democratic chance that luck choose all these people at once to get contracts and get promoted by record companies to be the voice of the boomer generation, which song was anti-war? most of the songs were about doing lcd and not caring anymore..... c'mon people..... none of them had half the talent of an average college tenor cuartet......and there were at least hundreds of those around the country in the 1960's...... all you british people need to wake up that they marketed this CIA produced crap to you guys and you hoovered it up!!!

Just watched it again last night. It is such a great movie with an amazing soundtrack!
Hi Tim, Randy, and sweet Scout! Loved Mama Cass' blue house, Carole King's house was beautiful sitting on the hill Tapestry my favorite album of all time, the silent/golden age actress Mary Astor bought it in 1926. Then Denny Dougherty, Hal Ashby, The Rolling Stones, lived here. This is my favorite house. The house at corner of Appian Way and Sunset was beautiful built in the '30's I think. Love Laurel Canyon. It's changed even more today.
I haven't read all 252 comments, so someone else *may* have already said this, but Robert Frank, best known for his groudbreaking collections of photographs, "The Americans" (1958) directed Cocksucker Blues.
It is a fact that bears repeating. Right on, thanks!
Oh man, I'd love to take a tour of those streets with you guys! Wait, I guess I am. LOL
Hi Tim...I've enjoyed the tours...I just have one little critique...I know you've done it a few times, but if at all possible show photos of the artists in front of the houses or businesses you're showing if the photo exists...really drives the point home that they lived or worked there. Other than that...keep on making more walking tours...good stuff...thanks!
Check out my new Todd Rundgren video. I took your advice. Thanks.
Anybody ever tell u that u look like Anthony Bourdain?
When they are not telling me I look like Rick Beato, yes they do.

What are the chances of a California wild fire ripping through Laurel Canyon? Is it considered a high risk area?
It is a super high risk area. Many times as I have driven over to Hollywood down Laurel Canyon Blvd I have seen at people smoking in their cars. (I let them know and they are usually cool about putting it out.) A wildfire destroyed John Mayall's Laurel Canyon house in I believe 1971. From down below on the Sunset Strip I personally watched at least 20 houses burn one after another up there in 1979,
Gosh I miss that place 😩😩💜!
I live in england but its on my bucket list to visit laurel canyon..71 now so better make it soon.😁
I hear ya!
I'm afraid that you guys are mistaken about some details of the house rented by The Rolling Stones. They were in LA in January of '72 to do some final recording and the mixing of tracks that would become Exile on Main Street. Cocksucker Blues did not exist yet, because it was filmed by Robert Frank during the North American Tour later that summer. He had full control of its contents, The Stones did not make it, and were advised by their lawyers that some of the things depicted would make it difficult for them to obtain visas to return to the U.S. if the film was released, so they blocked it. It can be seen in its entirety on RUclips, or at least that used to be the case. Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, released in '74, is The Stones official concert release of the '72 tour, and shows the band at the height of their powers. It's well worth seeing and I returned to the theater to see it many times upon its release.
I'm sure you're right! Thanks!
