He said Lucy looked at him, turned to who brought him for interview & Lucy said “Well..... he is cute but what does he do?” Keith said that he turned to Lucy ( think he said he was six yrs old at the time but not positive.) & said “I play the drums!” Lucy said “Ok Keith”...” Play the drums for me!” Keith said that at that point they had interviewed so many child actors fur the pivotal part! Finally the complete version, the old Rock And Roll Classics DVD cut it in half.
I never understood why they did that. It's like they didn't want to show the segment where the names of the kids were displayed.
Aww they are all so young and sweet and cute little boys
With the right connections, son, you can live out your Beatles Rock 'n Roll fantasy!
AND WHY NOT>>> everyone has a turn((remember that)) so be happy for these boys.. they sang well and it was a great tune and song... and SO WHAT if they have famous dads... stop being jealous and be happy --YOUR TURN WILL COME--- and that is GOD s Promise...
@@realitychick8903 How right you are & I couldn’t agree with you more! If you can get some help ...”why not!” If they had no talent & songs they recorded weren’t very good, no one would have bought their record(s), nor would they have invited to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show, no matter “WHO” their parents were! They were young talented kids & good for them! I so agree with you “reality chick!”🌺
They still had to put in the work.
@@Shahmar Indeed.
Beatle mania Afterbirth
I watched a clip of the “Association” on Ed Sullivan….they were definitely live a couple times.
Carol Kaye and Hal Blaine sound great on this.....it sounds like every song from the 60's NOT by the Beatles......
Where would we be without the Wreaking Crew?
Nowadays bands with young kids sound pretty good, not so much back then; I figured this had to be members of the Wrecking Crew.
@@lornedey4040 It's absolutely the Wrecking Crew and their voices are completely amplified with Professional singers augmenting most of their vocals - and of course top Studio musicians playing on their records. I'm not knocking them, they were young and around and sure they had famous parents which opened many doors - but, they never really produced a Hit single that I can recall - Desi Jr. of course was known for being a good drummer, but I can't tell you how many good drummers I've worked with through the year who never appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show - trust me, in Show Business, it's who you know ~
@@JohnnyGNV All of which explains why the boys are lip-synching and miming their playing!
Who ya know is right! They actually auditioned for Frank Sinatra, who founded the Reprise label on which he and Dean Martin recorded. I'm guessing papa Dino arranged the audition!
The trio released 4 albums and over a dozen singles on Reprise (distributed by Warner Bros. Records), until they signed with Columbia in 1969.
For Reprise, DD&B hit #17 in '65 with "I'm a Fool" on the Billboard Top 100 chart, and #25 with "I'm Not the Lovin' Kind" later that year.
@@billmiller6274 Not much.....they actually probably sang this tune on the recording (Milli Vanilli didn't even do THAT) and that's about it.....by the way, a LOT of bands actually performed live on Ed Sullivan, but not these guys....
Hal Blaine and I lived in Marina del Rey in the 80's, and we became lasting friends. Incidentally, we were both there when Dennis Wilson died. Dennis and I talked about our women troubles while shaving and showering in "The Head"....The crazy thing is, Dennis had wolfman like hair and though we were "Dock/Boat Neighbors", I never knew who he was until the day he died. I held the the dock-gate open for the gurney that evening after divers found the body. That day burned into my memory.
BTW...Hal was a great guy and we stayed in touch and remained friends until he passed. I lived in the best of times. Nothing like today.
You’re a lucky guy to have known Hal. He always was my idol…after I discovered that HE was the session drummer on all of those records I loved! I was a young drummer back then. I used to get pissed off when some group had a hit with a fabulous drum part. I used to say to myself “where the hell are all these groups finding all of these incredible drummers?” Then I found out it was all one guy: Hal Blaine!
@@bradentonguy50 I regret having drifted away from Hal after he moved to the desert...though we did talk on the phone and e-mail. Shortly before he died we spoke and we made a promise that we would "Have to get together soon." Ya gotta remember that yesterday is gone; and one day, tomorrow never comes.
@@richardschaefer4807 I seem to recall that his ex-wives wiped him out clean in his divorces. I think one of his exs even sold the gold records off of his walls. I also read that, at some point, he was so financially strapped that he worked as a security guard some place. I have this image of him sitting at a desk somewhere and hearing his records being played over the building’s PA. If he had tried to tell people that he played drums on all of those records they would call him crazy. Did he ever tell you about these things?
@@bradentonguy50 Yes; I was aware of these issues.

Tragically Dino Martin died 22 years later in a military aircraft accident and they say his father Dean Martin never got over it.

If I remember correctly, in 1987 Dean was finally on board, for the first time in years, to hit the road with Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis, Jr. for a reunion tour. Shortly before that was to happen, Dino was killed when his F-4 crashed. Dean was devastated and the tour was cancelled. Dean never got over the loss and died eight years later on Chistmas Day, 1995.
@@tommcginnis9064 I didn't know Dean Martin had a son but I find things like that sad. He seemed like a nice kid.

Such a tragic end for Dean Martin, Jr. I remember watching a bio on senior that reported that he never could quite overcome the depression of losing his son... so tragic.
Fantastic job guys!!!
I had their album. I was 12.
I can't beleive they were so young. I remember this song since 1965, even I forgot who played it, for some time I thought It was a song by the British group Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich.
It's doze "D's" everywhere.
Dave Dee etc. did the song "Bend It". Such a fun song, that was!
From Ed's first regular color telecast. That's one reason he's dressed up in a tuxedo!
It's such a shame that none of the Beatles' performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" made it to color. I believe the band's final appearance on the show in 1965 came one week before color.
@@alanarakelian5021 You are exactly right; they appeared on the last black and white episode (one week before this one), which I think was the first episode of the season. It was supposed to be shot in color, but I can't remember why it wasn't. Maybe they didn't have the color equipment quite ready yet.
@@TomElvisSmith The color shows were so much better in appearance than the black and white. Also, don't know if you can verify this or not, but the audio quality in the color episodes seemed to be way better than in the black and white. To me, it's a stark difference. When Ed Sullivan went to color, maybe he upgraded all of the audio equipment at the same time. Any thoughts?
@@alanarakelian5021 As time went on, the technology improved, both sound and picture quality. I do generally prefer the guests in the black and white episodes though, as I'm a bigger fan of the pre-British invasion music scene. Still, some of my favorites were on color shows too.

I so loved them & this song! I can remember playing this particular song countless times too. Each one of these really young boys were so talented at such a young age! I was shocked to hear how young they were when they performed here on the Ed Sullivan Show, too. I know I realized back then that they were young but just listening to Ed Sullivan just now it hit me how talented the three of them were & poised at such a young age. I was really young myself back then & so loved them! I still love this song, 🤣might I add. I want to add too that Ed Sullivan was such an extraordinary man, bringing these groups, vocalists & acts to a national audience, where some may have remained unknown, if he didn’t give many( all kinds of “acts”, too!!!) their big break on his tv show. He really was an amazing man! I so loved this post/video/ blog & I sooooo love UTUBE, who brings videos( moments in time) back to us, that if not for UTube, would be lost forever! “A Sincere Thank-you To Extraordinary UTUBE!”

At 2:15, you can hear the backing track end, and the band plays a 'tacked on' ending... although most people didn't notice- there's a dramatic difference in the tone of Dino's Hofner bass, vs. the Wrecking Crew's recorded backing track, with the heavily reverbed Joe Osborn's Fender Jazz Bass.

Desi, Jr., was actually 12. He was born on January 19, 1953, famously on the same day that his mother's character gave birth to Little Ricky on "I Love Lucy". Contrary to something else posted here, Desi, Jr., did not play the role of Little Ricky but did appear in one of Lucille Ball's later sitcoms as her son.
Yes. Desi Jr. and his older sister Lucie Arnaz appeared on "Here's Lucy" (1968-74) as Lucy's children on the show. I believe the actor who played Little Ricky on "I Love Lucy" and "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" was named Keith Thibodeaux.
Really? Ed Sullivan was really on top of everything and was hardly ever wrong. The man was incredibly sharp.
You are absolutely right! Desi Jr was born on January 19th, 1953 & did not play her son on “I Love Lucy”( original series)! I ironically enough just watched the most interesting biography on Lucille Ball on the “Reelz station/network” on Cable ,two nights ago. There was a man in the show that spoke throughout the special( explaining various episodes from “I Love Lucy”. He stated how he played little Ricky & showed up with so many others for the interview. He told in great detail how the interview went & so much fun 👂 no the whole story on how he was hired. His name is “Keith Thibodeaux & he went on to say that when he showed up for the interview, he walked onto the set of the show to meet Lucy. Desi Sr wasn’t there at the moment. Keith said he started playing the drums & in walked Desi Sr & he stopped him after a couple minutes, turned to Lucy & said “Well, I THINK WE HAVE FOUND OUR LITTLE RICKY!!!”♥️
And I was 9 years old when this aired.
