    I'm so glad I found your channel (thanks, Merphy!) - your reading taste seems to match mine almost perfectly and, damn, your editing style is a category on itself! I adore Senlin books and Gentleman Bastard series are one of my favorites (hell, I even named my dog Lamora), and so good to find someone else who also enjoys Murakami! Hyped to see more videos from you :)

    I'm absolutely *_thrilled_* the past year or so to see the love that *The Dragonbone Chair* is getting from the younger set on BookTube; first Daniel (do I need to say Greene? really? LOL) and now you. I first read it around the time the series was coming out (I know I had to wait for *To Green Angel Tower* but I can't remember if I waited for *The Stone of Farewell* or not), and I fell in love with it. I wouldn't call it my favorite Fantasy series, but it has always been the Fantasy series that I described as "the most beautifully written genre fiction I have ever read." And yes, that includes all of the Science Fiction as well (and I've been reading SF&F _almost_ exclusively since around 1980 or so when I got hooked on the Narnia books which led to me getting hooked on Tolkien and eventually SciFi stuff as well).
    For years I tried spreading the word of Tad Williams stuff, and would occasionally find someone who had read him, but it was always his other stuff, never "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn." But now it seems to be making a bit of a resurgence, and just in time, as the second book in a follow up trilogy is currently out (I haven't gotten to it yet). It just makes me so happy to see Tad Williams get the recognition and love from the Fantasy fandom that he has so long deserved.

The books are amazing, and though each one is rather simply written, together as a whole they great a long and complex story. And still each book has a lot of deep themes, just written about in a very straightfoward manner! I actually just started reading Senlin Ascends last night, and I'm enjoying it, thus far!
    I'm a hard sell on Tad Williams, though, as Otherland was decidedly not a favorite of mine. An impenetrable slog, is how I remember it. Maaaybe I'll check out Dragonbone Chair, someday.
    As far as "Remember Reading..." candidates, maybe things like Tintin, Winnie the Pooh, and Jedi Apprentice/Quest, at some point? Are fantasy elements a must, or just general whimsy?

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  3 года назад +1

      Awesome, hope you enjoy Senlin Ascends as much as I did! Dang that sucks about the Otherland being a slog, I'll have to try some other books by Williams to see what I think. Nope fantasy isn't a must, it could be any type of fiction. Those are great recommendations, I'll keep those ones in mind for my 'Remember Reading' series!

    • @Rogue_VI
      @Rogue_VI 3 года назад +2

      Otherland was a slog? Wow. I loved it. His other major series is Shadowmarch, where the territory of Fae-type creatures continues to encroach on the territory of Man. I really enjoyed it.

    • @EhsJaySaunders
      @EhsJaySaunders 3 года назад

      @@Rogue_VI To each their own, and it's admittedly been a few years. I just remember being sooo bored with Williams' tangents and overexplained worldbuilding in Otherland. It barely felt like I was even reading a story, at some points. Between that and being spoiled on the end of another of his series (I forget which), that honestly sounded underwhelming to the point of insulting, I've never felt the need to pick up a Tad Williams tome again. That said, I'm glad you like them! Someone should. It'd just take a lot of convincing for me to give his work another shot, and I don't think anyone has the time to make that their full-time job.

    • @Rogue_VI
      @Rogue_VI 3 года назад

      @@EhsJaySaunders That's how I feel about Discworld. I read the first 4 and hated them. I was so bored and no amount of convincing will get me to try again. Unless that convincing comes in the form of monetary inducements. I might be persuaded by that.

    • @EhsJaySaunders
      @EhsJaySaunders 3 года назад

      @@Rogue_VI I believe I've only tried one Discworld entry. Carpe Jugulum, as I recall? I thought it was...fine, but it didn't compel to pick up any more. People have told me I was ill-fated to start with that one, though, so I should probably at least give the series another shot.

    I love the Books of Babel and don't seem to see many on Booktube talking about them. Evan Winters books were good (although it was tough going getting into the first book). And Pratchett's discworld is brilliant.
    My favourite read this year was The Sword of Kaigen by M.L.Wang - although it was a bit slow to start it was worth persevering because this book was just so good and so incredibly painful too.

    Of the books you read this year that I have read, I don't think I read any of them this year. I may have read First Law early in the year, but I wasn't tracking reading dates at the time, so I don't remember. My best books of the year: First Formic War trilogy (Card); Dragonships of Vindras trilogy (Weis and Hickman); Monster Hunter Memoirs trilogy (Correia and Ringo); The Psalms of Isaak books 1-3 (Scholes) - I'll finish this series in January/February.

    Wait I’m so excited for Remember Reading because there’s so many series I remember reading but don’t remember the name of the book/series.... there’s one in particular I’m dying to find about a boy who rides a giant bear and there’s a floating city....

    I read Kafka on the Shore a few years ago and what a trip it is. I really liked most of the story, but yeah, there are definitely some scenes that didn’t reeeeally need to be in it. But then again this Murakami we are talking about here. What is one of his books without an uncertain-if-I’m-ok-with-this sensual encounter?

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  3 года назад +1

      Hahaha you described it perfectly! The weird sensual encounters were a bit unsettling 😅 but overall it was such a weird and interesting read. I definitely want to read more Murakami, I'm thinking of starting Norwegian Wood next

    I was also surprised by the humor in Joe Abercrombie's Blade. I was told how horrible and grim and dark and violent it was, and I found myself giggling at some of the jokes... reminded me of Terry Pratchett. And he is my absolute favorite author, so that's a high praise :-D It's the wisdom, heart, great compassion and understanding, and the wicked twisty humor, and the characters... and the references... his knowledge was vast! I caught quite a lot of them, but I know I missed about half :-D (There is or at least was a website dedicated to the references in Discworld books... wonderful.) His best books are almost holy scripts to me, the worst books are still good. I am so happy he wrote so many books before he died, and still his passing was a huge loss to me. :´(
    The worst in Kafka was the animal abuse... brrr... and it was horrible that he couldn't talk with them after he killed the... man-thing what ever it was.

    I guess Dresden Files have been a revelation this year. It's by no means perfect, it's quite cheesy, but it's absolutely captivating.

    I recommend Walter Moers' Zamonia novels. They're bricks but I assure you, well worth it! It's genius lies in language and world building with good and whimsical characters and solid stories. There's a lot of obvious and not-so-obvious allusions to tropes in story telling and storytelling rules are broken regularly in fun ways
