Are you thinking about painting your sewing machine? If so, what color?

I'm about to embark on a paint job for my own 1941 Kenmore. Instead of trying to paint it the blah almond colour, I decided to be a little bit more adventurous. I picked up four different shades of blue, and once the weather improves a little, I am going to paint this machine so that it is "Dazzle Painted". That's a term they used in WW1 and WW2 to define a type of paint pattern used on troop ships to confuse submarines so they could not tell which direction a ship was sailing. That was the theory, anyway.
I chose the colour scheme of the RMS Olympic (Titanic's only surviving sister ship during WW1 and WW2), with the blue/grey blue/deep blue/baby blue colour scheme. I "hope" that once I completely sand this machine down to bare aluminum (your Kenmore is made of aluminum and won't rust) that my Rustoleum primer and paint all in one product will be able to mimic that dazzle paint theme.
To tie in the control panel on the front, I am thinking of painting the handwheel with a bronze hammered paint finish (it's an epoxy appliance paint). It's not the deep brown, but the dark bronze is in the same colour family as the panel, so I think it will blend well.
I also have a Kenmore 1940 (the "lesser" version of the 1941) that I have modified to do all the same things as the 1941 will do (like chain stitching, for example) that was badly gouged in shipping. I bought (at great expense) a can of almond epoxy appliance paint (in Canada, Rustoleum only offers black and white appliance paint, all other colours are not available here), and am going to attempt to simply touch up the bad areas. If that fails, I'll sand the entire lower half down to bare metal and repaint the entire lower half (there are scuffs up top in the rear, but I can cover them with something clever rather than repaint. Hopefully, though, the appliance paint will get the job done.
I am hoping I don't have to clear coat the 1941 once it's done, but I am going to guess that I will end up doing just that. I will let the paint cure for thirty days before I attempt it, though as I've heard of people putting clear on this two in one paint and getting very bad results. Usually that is because they didn't properly prepare (wet sand) and allow the coloured paint to cure first. I will check into all of this before I lay down even one spray coat of anything...just to be certain.
I might change the colour scheme up to be more rock and roll, possibly more exotic (I've seen cars that have hoods painted with a faded paint using lace as the inlay pattern), no way to know for sure until the time comes, and inspiration either blesses me, or with my dumb luck...curses me.
      Wish me luck.

That Kenmore 158-1941 is a superb machine. The Singer 201-2 is definitely another keeper.

I wish I still had a Kenmore 158-1941. My mom had one, it's how I learned to sew. Just got a 201-2, and it's so nice!

You are way more patient than I would be in the touch-up and color match. I never would have thought of changing the color of the machine and repainting the whole thing. I'm going to think about it now, though. Thank you.

I have a Singer 15-88 treadle that really needs a new paint job. My niece or nephew will probably get the machine when I'm done with it, so I was trying to decide on a fun color that I like, that wouldn't make them wonder what Aunt T was thinking 15 to 20 years from now. Their dad stopped by one evening in his special pick up truck he bought a few years ago. Its his baby,, now that the kids are grown.. He may drive the truck for the rest of his life as he is just that way when it comes to his vehicles. I've decided to use 2017 Dodge Copper Pearl when I paint Ms. Anita. (I named her after my favorite female Singer, Anita Baker!)

@@ThimbleBook Yes, I've named all of my machines, though I'm not overly creative in that department. There's Kenny (Kenmore), The Inspector (Morse), my 201-2 is Birdie, my Great Aunt Birda's nickname as she bought the machine brand new in 1951. Take a wild guess what Sergio does !?! I thought naming them was required once you hit the "herd" category! 😁 To me, 5 is a herd. But I'm done except for obtaining at least 1, if not 2, "donor" clones of my Kenny, as at 64, I've decided I don't ever want to buy another new machine. They will be named Griffey and Junior. So an investment of $70 to $80 for "insurance" isn't bad, especially when I consider that other than my original 1990 Kenny ($249), I've only spent $12 obtaining The Inspector. All others were gifts.
