Thank you so much for this tutorial. I got a Bernina 830 record from my grandma who passed away and it is my greatest treasure. It's so awesome that these machines are so old and are still working, I also love that I can just fix these kind of things myself because of awesome humans like you that share their knowledge! My button hole switch wouldn't budge and I used the hair dryer and oil trick, now it works! I love how long lasting these machines were made, no sensitive electronics just plain old mechanics that do their job ✌✌👍👍
I'll now mark the spot that needs to be oiled on my machine 😊😊😊😊

Jeff I have a far better way to fix the stiff buttonhole mechanism. They sell plastic safe Deep Creep penetrating oil made by Sea Foam. I squirted a real quick shot of it using the tube right at the back of the buttonhole switch let it sit repeat one more very small squirt then I used some synthetic sewing machine oil down on any metal on metal linkage coming from the buttonhole mechanism then used a little heat from hair dryer and it works beautiful turns easy. My machine was bought and just sat never was oiled until I bought it. I oiled like your video and it runs so smooth I can't believe it. I was told the lady purchased and never learnt how to sew. I am now the happy owner of a 1979 Bernina 830 record electronic. I have used Deep Creep to free up several seized up vintage sewing machines .Don't use shellac thinner use Deep Creep. I did appreiciate the video.

Thank you so much Jeff! I inherited my mom's 830, and really love sewing with it. You explained so well, and I love the nail polish/paint (just did mine like yours)! I have had it serviced, and the technician had nothing but good to say about this machine, so I was fortunate to come across your video on how to care for it myself. Again, thanks so much for your straightforward, simple explanations!

Thank you Jeff! This is my husbands account, but I have a Bernina 830 given to me by my 4H leader when I got married and I love it. She bought it new and it’s been lovingly cared for, so I want to make sure I continue that. This video was super helpful!! I really appreciate it. (Also, small world, I grew up in the Grand Junction area. Pretty cool that the best video I found to help me care for my machine is from there too!)

Thanks so much for this! Just finished cleaning and oiling my 1978 830 record electronic. I had no idea the top even opened up (had to have my husband open that up as it was extremely stiff). This was my mother's machine and I feel lucky to have it. Baby quilts are queued up to be pieced and quilted now. Will be using your instructions for cleaning and oiling my walking foot next!

It is in mint condition and thanks to my mum who recommended I bought it even tho it cost the money I sold my first car with almost 30 yrs ago. You are prolonging the life of these beauties with your timely care to post. All oiled and running like it just left the factory ! Your lovely calm manner made me confident to do it myself pausing the video as I went along.

My Bernina 830 Record was also my Mother's - and I treasure it as much as you treasure yours! She used a yellow paint pen to show me where to oil the machine that she spent so much of her time sitting at...
It is lovingly housed in a Horn Sewing Cabinet, making it very simple to work at and keep it tidy as well as dust-free when not in use.
I'm not a great sewer, but occasionally I will make a unique frock for myself. I have just bought a new house and am making my own curtains and saving a bundle on buying made-to-order ones.
I really appreciate your video which helps me keep it in pristine condition - but I would sell my body (not that anyone would buy it, LOL!) before I sold my Mother's sewing machine!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and obvious passion for these lovely machines. 😁

This was such an interesting video! My parents bought me a brand new 830 when I was a teenager. It had the red marks for oiling. Wonderful video! This was so helpful and interesting to see what the inside looked like, and ease of access. I really enjoyed it.
Could you please make a video showing the differences between an 830 and 930 record? The 930 seems to be the penultimate sewing machine, however, the 830 seems to have easier access to the internals, a nicer red case, and a simpler build, ergo a simpler maintenance. In the end, its always about maintenance of things.

I have a machine like the one on the left that my mother bought for me in 1978. I used it and used it! In 2018 I bought a new Bernina 570 series, but I kept the old one because my mother told me to never get rid of it. I still use it for all of my mending and some other sewing. I also do some stitching on paper with it. I didn’t know I could oil it myself! Our Bernina dealer here in Casper, Wyoming closed last year 😢. Guess I need to find a new dealer to get my 570 serviced.

Hi Bernina Jeff, I bought my Bernina in 1976. Recently, it started making some unusual sounds. I felt the motor was dying and I thought maybe it needed a new belt. I took it to two different people to be serviced, one of them a certified Bernina repairperson. They serviced it and told me there was nothing was wrong with it. OK. I didn't believe them. Having said that I started a search for a new old Bernina 830 Record. Yesterday I purchased one locally. I wish I had seen this video first. Before I purchased it I sewed on it and noticed that there were tight knobs and the decorative stitch feature didn't work. It has a good straight stitch and zigzag was fine and other features seemed to be working fine. Today, a friend and I were able to "unfreeze" the decorative stitch feature by adding oil. Afterwards I found this video. I have now oiled the new old Bernina and hopefully it will sew like a dream. I LOVE my Bernina and hopefully I can revive the original one too. Thanks for your video. It was a God send.

Bernina should really start a rerun of making and selling the 830 and the 807. They would sell these with ease! And there is definitely demand for them. I absolutely love my 807 and 830 both still stitch beautifully and are so reliable I will never part with them as they are fully serviceable and will out live me. They hold their prices because they are great sturdy machines. Unlike the new computerised and plastic part machines. Please Bernina see sense and start making and selling these machines again.

Great video. I just changed the motor brushes on my Bernina 830 and I noticed that the capacitor is slightly swollen. I can't find the part anywhere. Any suggestions?

I just was so lucky to get a 830. Must have been out of use for some years and the dialling knobs were hardly moving. All but the zig zag dial is working now, that one is still very hard to turn. Where can I attack the problem and is it just oiling it needs?

I’ve recently got one of these machines as a gift, I’m very excited to use it! I’m having a problem where the needle is off centred and hitting the back of the plate before going into the bobbin hole, any tips on trouble shooting?

Thank you Jeff for all your great videos. I am uk based and have been using a Bernina 1130 until the feed dogs stopped moving the fabric. I have tried everything even asked my Bernina Sewing shop who advised they didn’t know what it would be except probably a system board and wouldn’t take the machine off me so I bought another Bernina 1130 and I can’t believe the same thing has happened again! My question to you Jeff is can this problem be fixed or am I looking at two Bernina 1130s for spares? Kind regards Diane

Do you have a video that shows a more step by step oiling? Can you over oil your machine?

I cleaned, marked and all oil areas and our a drop in each place. I changed the needle and noticed that I could move the needle to left and and right position by hand. The knob moves it also. It shouldn’t do that without moving it with the knob. I hope this isn’t confusing. Thanks!

Good video. Would you consider remaking it w/a camera that doesn't wobble so much, so we can watch it w/o getting dizzy? I love my Bernina 830 Record!

I still have my 910! I LOVE IT! Do I oil it the same way? Also, does the oil go bad? If so what oil should I use?

I just serviced one of these, using your tutorial. Question. Can the lightbulb be switched out for a new LED bulb? If so, what size? I get them from the Featherweight Shop for my Singer machines.

Great video, Jeff. I have a beautiful 930 that has a bad capacitor, and a broken foot pedal. Any idea where I can get these items? It ran beautiful, and I miss using it!

Thank you so much for the helpful video :) I just got an old bernina 830 record but it seems to be gummed up with old oil that's become very thick and tacky, is my only option to hand it in to a repairperson or is it possible to clean out the old oil myself?

You can do it just watch lots of videos and only remove screws you know you can replace
