      Some good alterations would be adding the satellite dish onto the top of the Falcon in the hangar bay at Mos Eisley, completing the incomplete Y-Wing towards the bottom of the shot inside the Yavin IV hangar bay right after Han & the gang lands on that moon and computer generating some droids in the backs of the Y-Wings during their Death Star trench run.

    While the changes in Empire are mostly fine (tho I still prefer the theatrical), it actually has one of my least favorite changes: changing Vader's "Bring my shuttle" to "Prepare my Star Destroyer for my arrival." The former was SUCH a good read from Jones, filled with the anger and disappointment from seeing his son would rather jump off a building than join him. That delivery had so much depth. The new line sounds off to me, like he's almost pleased with himself! Not a fan.

    • @brown22sugar25
      @brown22sugar25 2 года назад +7

      My least favorite change is Boba Fett’s voice. Jason Wingreen sounds like a pirate that eats nails while Temuera Morrison sounds deadpan.

    • @OmegaRockman

      @@brown22sugar25 I agree, though it's a change I at least get. Part of me has always thought "Why didn't they cast someone who could match Wingreen's voice?" but I actually like Morrison outside of his ESB stuff (and I don't even dislike it really, I just prefer Wingreen's performance (and the theatrical cut in general).

      What makes it even worse in the German version is that the original voice of Vader died before the change, so Vader sounds different in this Scene and also when talks to the emperor.

    • @brown22sugar25
      @brown22sugar25 2 года назад +5

      @@OmegaRockman it’s another example of the backwards attempts at continuity. The OT came out first so it was the prequels job to fit into continuity, but instead the prequels got it wrong so Lucas changed the OT to fit the prequels. Like Obi Wan not knowing R2, Vader’s eyebrows, etc

    • @OmegaRockman
      @OmegaRockman 2 года назад +4

      @@brown22sugar25 Yep, that's pretty much it. For all the flack the Sequels get for "not fitting with the saga," frankly the Prequels are more guilty of it. My favorite example is Padme dying at the end of Episode III not matching up to Leia having memories about her in VI. I noticed that in the theater when I was eleven. Apparently in later novelizations they had threw in some throwaway line about it being something like more of a feeling on Leia's part than an actual memory (don't remember how exactly they phrased it tho). I'm generally positive on the Prequels these days, but I can't help but laugh at dumb stuff like that.

    I actually prefer the Special Edition of ESB, Cloud city feels much more like a real city, instead of a set of white hallways. And the original Emperor was really weird. Continuity-wise, the change to Ian McDiarmid makes much more sense, although he looks too much like he did in RotS (because that was when they filmed that scene).

    So to my understanding, the despecialized was more of like a compilation of different sources and the 4k77 4k80 is a mostly one source from one scan type of deal.

    • @timonsteup2877
      @timonsteup2877 2 года назад +15

      Basically. Despecialized was a lot of guessing and compiling of different elements. I say guessing because without a proper theatrical print it was almost impossible to know the exact color timing of the films. The Team behind 4K77, 4K80 and 4K83 have scanned several different prints of each film from all over the world and on different film stocks to somewhat appropriate what the colors looked like when first projected in the late 70s and early 80s.

    • @flametitan100
      @flametitan100 2 года назад +13

      @@timonsteup2877 Even then, it's difficult to get the timing exactly right. It's a _lot_ of trial and error, as you basically need to be able to watch the film projected with an era accurate bulb as you work, which not even they could manage.
      That said, 4K83 is probably the most impressive of the trio, as the print had more useful frames than most prints of the era usually survived with (To the point the deliberately broke sync with the traditional standard because they had every known extra frame,) as well as being one made for special showings, so it didn't have as much grain and VERY little colour fade.

    • @timonsteup2877

    I don't know, maybe it's because I grew up watching the 1990 VHS tapes, but I kind of like Cloud City as its original white walls. The CG backgrounds just don't really do it for me. Does it make sense, does it at least conceptually sound good? Yes, and maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I kind of prefer the white corridors over all the windows. I think that perhaps they wanted to do the windows initially, but it would have caused too many problems with filming, it just wasn't a very practical thing to do at the time, or it just wouldn't have looked good, I don't know, but by naming it Cloud City and making the whole place this stark white and being very clean, it gave the illusion that it was in fact a city among the clouds and has a certain purity to it that then gets destroyed with the Empire's arrival and the shootouts happening within and putting these black scorched holes in the walls that have smoke floating out of them and even dirtying the ceiling with soot.

      Likewise, all it's purity and cleanliness is a facade. The city is still a legally dubious mining colony, and has a _lot_ of areas that aren't all gleaming skyrise. I can get adding windows to some key areas, but it makes sense that for the most part there aren't windows.

    Honestly, Disney should make a contract deal with the owner of the 4K 77 versions to put them onto Disney+. Because from these videos, the 4K 77 looks MUCH better than on the original version or even Disney+ in many scenes. Much sharper and darker, whereas D+ makes its films and shows a little brighter in comparison (with everything I think, not just Star Wars).
    Disney+ has a "Versions" tab from the Marvel IMAX releases, so the same can be done for the Star Wars movies for all their releases (4K 77, Harmy's Despecialised Edition, VHS release, DVD release, Bluray release etc)

      IMO if Disney released a user-friendly tool that allowed you to create a custom edit of Star Wars where you can mix-and-match various changes it'd probably do very well among a certain set of the fanbase. Want the 2011 entrance to Mos Eisley but don't want the Jabba the Hutt scene? Prefer the exterior view of Cloud City but want Jason Wingreen's voice as Boba Fett? When you're done, share your edits with friends (as long as your friends have Disney+ memberships).

Think it’s still there. Anyone else remember that comic?

    I was born in 1997, so obviously I was unable to see the movies when they came out, BUT my first contact with Star Wars was my father's VHS tapes, which where very close to the 4k77, 4k80 and 4k83 versions. One Christmas in the early 2000s my father bought a DVD pack of Star Wars movies. We watched and I remember I was confused, because they were very different to what I was used to.
    I will try to recreate my impressions as a child (ignoring knowledge I have as an adult): new weird looking aliens in many places in the background where there used to be people or nothing at all (CGI), those weird additions even sang in Ep. VI, different dialogues, the Emperor looked different in Ep. V and VI because in Ep. V the original actor was replaced by the actor from Ep. VI and I was used to "two Emperors", but now one was "gone", the lightsabers looked thicker, moved more "realistic"* and the explosions where "bigger".
    I hope you enjoyed seeing the VHS version and the early DVD version through a child's eyes. ;D
    Nowadays I must say that the CGI aliens are the only "objectively bad" alterations, because they were outdated so fastly. To a present-day viewer they look like plastic - the same is true for early Marvel movies, old DVDs of the Prequel Trilogy and any CGI from the 2000s. 3 D animations always look amazing in newly released movies and videogames but loose their "magic" fastly as time goes by and better 3 D animations amaze the viewer a-new. (I know that judgements are subjective, calm down)
    *(back then I had no fencing experience and could not know which combat scenes actually are inspired by martial arts and which are "theatre fencing" for the sake of telling a story through violence; in fact Episode IV is the only movie with logical fencing (a lightsaber works best as piercing weapon) and Ep. VI has some shots inspired by medieval German swordfighting in legwork and postures; Ep. V and the prequels use theatre fencing techniques and the prequels added dance moves to their choreography (spins, turns, jumps... all this would be suicide in real life); the sequels are hard to analyse, because the camera changes angles fastly, which is why I can't examine whole fights in those movies - in general I got the impression they use theatre fencing techniques with some plausible thrust in the mix, but also commit modern sins such as "reverse grips" on swords.)

    The original version dvds came out in 2006. Some of your shots listed as the 2004 dvd appear to be the 2006 unaltered dvd version and not the 2004 special edition dvd, which the blu ray is very similar to.

    Vader's lightsaber from 2004-2011 changes from being red to orange to pink to being badly washed out. Luke's is a real light blue, and also washed out. Return of the Jedi 2004-2011 Luke and Vader's lightsaber's are completely washed out. With Vader's looking the worst, his lightsaber turns from red to purple. Need to cover that in the next changes episode.

    The original has a subjective color palette that purposefully distorts the colors one would expect to see in those scenes. I remember how spooky the whole thing looked-as if it was shot at another galaxy far far away.

    Let's talk about the lightsabers. They are swords MADE OUT OF LASERS. Yet whenever anyone holds them close to their faces in the Star Wars blu-rays, their faces are darkened as if they're in shadow. It's a LIGHTsaber, damn it!

    • @jedsithor
      @jedsithor 2 года назад +1

      That's because they're holding sticks. Of the original six films, only Attack Of The Clones really did anything with the idea of lightsabers casting light on objects/people and that was during the close up section of the Anakin vs Dooku duel where they actually used glowing lightsaber props. I believe the sequels and The Mandalorian use actual LED-lit blades that actually emit light.
      To be honest I've always been a little surprised while making changes to the Original Trilogy, ILM didn't try to do anything about the lightsabers casting light. I'm even more surprised that it wasn't done more for the prequels.

    • @ComputerGeek1100
      @ComputerGeek1100 2 года назад

      @@jedsithor Yeah, I've seen some photos from production of the sequels (specifically, the Kylo/Rey duel on Starkiller Base) and they were holding props that actually gave off light. I thought it added so much to the look of the duel.

    I don’t know if I find it funny or infuriating that Lucas didn’t digitally remove the wires from the lightsabers. He focused his time adding pointless scenes to the moves over fixing any minor technical mistakes still left in the movie. At that point, what is even the point of a special edition?

    Call me biased, but I actually prefer the 2011 2K Blu-ray versions over anything else. I don't know, but from what I've seen of Disney's 4K version of anything, including The Mandalorian, they're not that impressive. I'd give my left nut for some regular 2K Blu-ray copies of these Disney+ shows, because my Oppo BDP-103 does a Hellava job at upconverting good AVC encoded BDs to 4K.

    I was going to say I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I prefer the original through 2004. the Disney+ one sucks, why couldn't Lucas leave his stuff alone ? it would have been so much better. Look at Cameron and the terminator franchises from 1984 to 1991 those are pure classic movies, which he did NOT mess up.
    Sadly I fear Lucasfilm/Disney will alter the OT again, and i'm praying they don't alter it any further lol.
