He had an idea, an idea that was very, very, very, very different from the final product and then better writers came in and edited that idea to be something far better than what GL came up with. @@samuel-wankenobi This is somewhat correct, except that the 1997 version was a photochemical restoration of the original negative with the CG stuff cut in and a few shots recomposited. It wasn't done entirely digitally until 2004.
The 2004 DVD is basically the 1997 version of the negative with additional digital cleanup from Lowry Digital and tinkering from ILM. If memory serves, that was scanned at 1080p, because hi-def wasn't a thing yet.
The 2011 first edition Blu Ray was not a new scan. It was basically the 2004 scan with a few new changes added, missing lightsaber cores added in and a few sloppy mistakes from the DVD version corrected, including some color timing changes.
Finally after the Blu-ray came out but before Lucas sold out to Disney, they did the 4K restoration through Reliance Mediaworks. That was a new scan of the negative, with all the digital stuff re-rendered to work in 4K. This is the version that's on Disney+, 4K UHD disc, and the remastered standard blu rays that are included with the UHD versions.

As someone who grew up on the 2011 version, I thought I would be attached to that version, since it's my childhood memory. But having finally seen the Harmy version, I actually love the coloring. Human skin tone looks much more natural. That said, while it's nice to see the original effects and movie unaltered, there were a couple small mistakes like the lightsaber being a prop/missing the special effects. There were also certain Special Edition changes that have become more iconic, such as the ring shockwave when the planets/Death Star blow up. Feels weird not having it. I also like how the SE version of Mos Eisley gives us extended shots, makes the city feel bigger, more alive and full with aliens, rather than just human extras walking around. The finale trench run space battle I can go either way. I like seeing the original Yavin planet and original fighter effects, but there were a couple shots that felt kinda dated where I think the SE re-done effects did the dogfighting scene better.
If I could have DeHarmy's coloring with some of the SE changes, that would be my ideal Star Wars. I like both the official version and the unofficial fan one.

  • @UnchainedEruption
    @UnchainedEruption Год назад +13

With the Han/Greedo sequence, in the Special Editions, particularly 2011 one, firing both together gives it a High Noon Duel kind of a vibe. Both men fire a shot simultaneously, only one remains standing (or sitting, as it were). But in the original 1977 and Harmy's DeSpecialized, it feels like it's taking inspiration from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." It reminded me very much of the famous scene in the bathtub where he says, "If you're gonna shoot, shoot. Don't talk."

A fly. We've had a fly for 42 years, something nobody even cared about, but all of the sudden, it matters. It must have been something that was caught during the early 3D conversion stages of things because it means someone would have had to make sure that fly didn't screw with the illusion, so instead they edited it out. A fly! George had meddled with the movies so much that he resorted to adding new dialog and removing flies from shots because nothing could ever be perfect enough. It was perfect to begin with man, as a founder of a film preservation organization, you would think George would have followed his own beliefs on film preservation. It's a fly, I shouldn't even be getting this worked up about it, but there's just something about the fact that this movie has been meddled with so many times, and not once before then was this fly an issue. The best thing about this is that Raiders of the Lost Arc has a very famous fly, it lands on Paul Freeman's lip and goes into his mouth, not one beat does he stop delivering his line, it's like he doesn't even notice, and instead of going with a different take of the line or going for a reshoot, or even editing it out since it's never once acknowledged by anyone in the scene in digital versions of the movie, that was the take that was kept and used and has stayed. This fly in the Lars Homestead is so remote and unremarkable that it stayed in the movie for 42 years, or I guess in reality it would be about 35 years at the latest, and it's suddenly an issue. Just, why? We've kept a Stormtrooper bonking his head and even giving him dialog in edits later instead of trying to reedit that from happening in the first place, but the fly, it's gone too far, it's overstayed its welcome. HO. LY. CRAP. 🤣

To me, the 2004 versions of the OT should have been the FINAL cut. It was before the "NOOO" the "Maclunkey" and all the hyper fixations, and it became clear these changes were not for continuity or visual enhancement, but George's own desire to alter the film. Which we may never understand truly why. The 2004 cuts were questionable, but tolerable to an extent. Imo, the Maclunkey was most likely a joke. It was George's last laugh, he intended to show it in 3D, cause a stir over the drama for its controversy and then chuckle to himself. A PR stunt.

    • @dja-train2265

Except that from a visual standpoint, the 2004 versions had some pretty egregious quality control issues. Missing lightsaber cores, crushed black levels, flipped audio on the surround channels in sections. They were a mess and most of those issues weren't corrected until at least 2011 - but at that time, George fixed a few things but broke others.

Content wise the 2004 version of Jedi is the latest version that I actually tolerate. In fact when I first watched Jedi Rocks when I was around 5 years old I cringed even then. Thankfully the version that I had as a kid was the 2006 trilogy with the theatrical cuts from the Laser disc set and since our TV was smaller I didn’t know about those being pillar boxed until we got a bigger tv, so for a long time those original theatrical ones were the one I watched over and over (thankfully none of them are scratched) So I’m in a unique position as someone from Gen z who grew up on the originals because I didn’t like Jedi Rocks right off the bat and was actively avoiding it.

I was hoping they'd redo the CGI spaces scenes and not keep the now 24 year old renders which look dated even for a video game now. Maybe they could reuse the models from Rogue One or Solo. Look at how good global illumination makes the star destroyers in Rogue One look - there's so much bounce lighting it really reinforces just how bright the ships are and how harsh the sunlight is. And everything reflects everything, with variable levels of roughness and in accordance with Fresnel's law. Everything is either shiny or matte, or has transitions between the two states, and it looks amazing. But no, they kept those ugly Lambertian surfaces and fake ambient light which don't mesh in with the model shots at all. Even with CG models from Turbosquid or something, how much would that even cost already?

If they were to release the theatrical cuts, here's my dream way of doing it: All 6 Lucas movies get their theatrical cuts rereleased in HD, and there will be a set for each film with all existing official cuts of it.
Here's how I very much want it to go:
    A New Hope:
    Disc 1: Theatrical Cut
    Disc 2: 1997 Special Edition
    Disc 3: 2004 DVD Edition
    Disc 4: 2011 BluRay Edition
    Disc 5: 2019 Disney+ Edition
    The Empire Strikes Back:
    Disc 1: Theatrical Cut
    Disc 2: 1997 Special Edition
    Disc 3: 2004 DVD Edition
    Disc 4: Disney+ Edition
    Return Of The Jedi:
    Disc 1: Theatrical Cut
    Disc 2: 1997 Special Edition
    Disc 3: 2004 DVD Edition
    Disc 4: 2019 Disney+ Edition
    The Phantom Menace:
    Disc 1: Theatrical Cut
    Disc 2: 2001 DVD Edition
    Disc 3: 2011 BluRay Edition
    Disc 4: Disney+ Edition
    Disc 5: BluRay 3D
    Attack Of The Clones:
    Disc 1: 35mm Theatrical Cut
Disc 2: Digital Theatrical Cut/2002 DVD Edition
    Disc 3: 2011 BluRay Edition
    Disc 4: BluRay 3D
    Revenge Of The Sith:
    Disc 1: 35mm Theatrical Cut
    Disc 2: Digital Theatrical Cut
    Disc 3: 2005 DVD Edition
    Disc 4: 2011 BluRay Cut
    Disc 5: BluRay 3D
And then watch them fly off the shelves! Trust me, Disney is sitting on a Goldmine!

They are, but they will never release the original cuts through sheer and brute stubbornness, i have nit been into star wars in a while but last i checked the arguement was that the original copies of star wars are too damaged to which i always say bs, there are films that are way way older that have been restored and the despecialised and 4k77 kinda put a lid on that whole arguement, if this is what a group of fans can do, imagine what a company like disney can do, but they will never do it.

I want to properly get into harmy’s version as well too. I know exactly what you mean about official preservation. I don’t think anyone would care about the changes of the special editions if the original was preserved well. Harmy's version surprised me. I too love the 2011 edition, and that was "my" version I saw first as a kid, but having finally seen the Despecialized, I was impressed by how good it is. It was nice to see the original effects and shots, for historical sake, and the coloring was much improved with natural skin tones for people rather than reddish faces. I did find myself missing a couple of the SE changes though.

I was trying to watch Return of the Jedi and right when Vader reached up to pick up the emperor I was there for the first time in over 30 years I was experiencing the emotional high of the movie and then goddamn George Lucas had to overdub Darth Vader saying "nOOoo" just like he did in the end of Return of the Sith and it utterly sucked the emotional moment out of the scene and I turned it off immediately. I'm so sick and tired of George's OCD BS.

He literally crapped on all of the hard work that the hundreds of people that worked on the films put in and he really diminished the special effects achievements that they made. At the very least, he should have allowed the non-Special Editions to get remastered and rereleased, but he won’t allow that. I have grown to have a disdain for George due to his attitude towards the originals and everyone involved.
