Looks Great Matt... Doing wood projects for many years, so appreciative of you sharing this. Can't wait to try it. Loving the channel. Actually just went full time with my business Thorgerson Woodworks and getting busy. I love how the lord has been blessing you guys. We serve an awesome God. Thanks again
I've got a small chest-of-drawers that I started refurbishing last year. Project got put on hold over the summer. I had started applying a French polish to it but decided to switch to Rubio Monocoat after watching quite a few RUclipsrs using it. As you mentioned, it is absolutely easy to apply! I doubt I will use anything else from now on. That walnut table top is awesome!
When doing breadboard ends, the center domino can be the tight fit setting. However, as you go out from the center, it is best to use the wide settings to allow for seasonal movement.
Matt, thanks, this was a very good video. Very easy to follow and you didn’t over talk it. You kept everything to the point, quick and easy. I actually coated a table top yesterday, walnut 2’x4’, and did the same thing you did on my first coat. I mixed 6 : 2 also! To much. I was interested in how long I had to wait before putting on the 2nd coat! You clarified that for me with 24 hrs, thanks again!
Excellent demonstration and explanation. The top looks amazing. It is nice to see you try these more expensive options for finish and show us how easy it is to apply. I need to give this a try. Thanks Matt. You are awesome.
Timely, About ready to finish my first Monocoat project and given all the cost in wood and finishes let alone the time I wanted to get this right. I think I’m set now. Thank you
Very nice video. Real informative. I’ve recently started using Rubio in my projects as I got exposed to it as it when I worked part time at Rockler this summer. I use the white scuff pad method myself and it works great. Just try to sample for the first time with cherry. I sanded it 80, 120, 180 and 220. After each coat I like to wipe with mineral spirits and let dry. Put on some Rubio Pure, let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes and then wiped it off and buffed it with a soft terry towel. I think I’m gonna wait a day and put on a second coat as I’d like to see if it gives me just a little more sheen. The finish is gorgeous but on Cherry the sheen was a bit more dull. I put on a second coat on some Hickory recently and it looked great. Thanks for all of your videos. I really appreciate your channel.
I just finished a butcher block desktop with poly and now I’m seeing all these Rubio videos. The finish looks awesome. I wish I’d have seen this I finished mine! Haha.
Hi Matt I am a hardwood floors man i been using Rubio and it’s amazing product there’s so much you can do with it. I love all your projects you are blessed brother I am going to do some off your farm tables.
Wonderful job, I have enjoyed watching you grow as a woodworker. Only problem with this is doing breadboard always allow or only secure the center fastener to allow for movement. I actually recommend people I’m trying to teach to watch your videos starting from the first to present so they understand you don’t have to have all latest and greatest equipment to do good woodwork. Keep up the good work and always learn something everyday.
Hello Matt , 1st want to thank you for all your videos and tutorials , very helpful but I’m still not there yet working on it, I just entered my 1st craft fair in my neighborhood I brought 31 pieces of miscellaneous crafts like home signs , joy signs , snowman and some small items and only came home with 9 pieces, but I could have sold more pieces if different colors , again thank you keep doing what your doing. You explain everything very well easy to follow! Good job
Thanks for this upload as I had a large table (5’x6’) to finish and wasn’t sure what to use. Got this and the application took 40 minutes and looks fantastic. So glad I subscribe.
You have come a long way with your show and techniques. I never thought I would see you use a product like Rubio and love how you are growing. At one point I had a difficult time watching your videos because you were constantly zooming in and out and I actually got sea sick from it. It is a pleasure to see the notification when you release a new video. I think you made the right decision doing this full time.
Great looking table and finish. Your videos and tools have come such a long way. I have enjoyed seeing your channel and skills grow. I really hope you stay relatable. Some of the others on RUclips have grown in such a way that they no longer make videos of things that I feel I could make. I don't have a 50k cnc, but I do have the same one you do. So far, everything you make, seems like a project most of us could make. Keep up the good work!
Keep them coming man! Love these videos! Recently bought a house with a big shop and have filled it with various kinds of saws from yard sales and whatnot that I can afford to build some of the projects that I’ve been watching you build on your channel, inspirational!
I've been using blue paper towel shop towels to wipe dust off after sanding and that's quite wasteful. I like the microfibre idea. Do you thr same towel when working through the grits? How often do you wash a given towel... or how long do you use one before tossing it? Thanks sir!!!
Hola! 🖐 WOW! Even on camera that finish looks amazing. Question; I've seen other makers use the low lint/no lint towels when they wipe off the Rubio. Did you notice any "fuzzies" left behind from the terry cloths you used?? Thanks, take care and have a good one! 👊
Great video! Following this video/advice, I applied 2 coats of Rubio Monocoat to new walnut table top. Afterwords I realized I had use NATURA Monocoat. What’s the best way to remove Natura and apply Rubio?
You mentioned waiting a day to apply second coat, and then mention need both sides done same day - are you applying first coat on the bottom side off camera? Thanks!
Personally, I like to blow off my sander with compressed air, then attach the non-woven pad to it. Much faster, and efficient. Also, if the Rubio gets damaged, just put more on in that spot, you won’t be able to tell the difference once dry.
Thank you for going into so much detail with the Rubio monocoat I’ve been looking at it for a while and you’re the only one that has gone into the little details. What shade you used, because again so many choices. how much to mix etc. It’s so pricey I’ve been putting off getting it in case I stuffed up. So thanks Now I’m going to find edging with a table saw because I don’t have a jointer and you mentioned that too
Rubio is a little more expensive, but it goes really far. as you said, you thought you didn’t have enough, and I would say you based that on how much you have used in the past for regular poly. One great thing about Rubio, if you have a scratch or dents, you can sand the spot and then re-apply the Rubio. You don’t have to strip the whole top, just the repair area.
Great video! Just one thing to point out so people don’t actually think this, but rubio isn’t nearly as durable as a poly, definitely more beautiful though.
Nice piece! Question, you didn't need to sand in between applications of Rubio? I know some videos talk about a maroon pad or 600 grit paper in between applications. Do you think I can get away with skipping that step and just apply after 24 hours of the first coat like seen here? Cheers
Hi Matt! I’m about to use this for the first time. Do you apply this finish on the bottom side of your project too? And is there a minimum room temperature at which I should apply it? Thanks!
I read comments regarding the durability of the finish. How does it compare to the durability of something like General Finishes topcoat? the Rubio looked great and seemed like a dream to work with, and if its durable would be worth the extra cost.
How long did you wait between 1st application and 2nd application? Actually when you were talking 1st and 2nd application you were talking front and back side of the table. Not a 1st coat and then 2nd coat on the same surface right?
Looks like a very interesting product one question I have is I have a ton of Minwax stains will this product work over that kind of stain or do you have to buy there stain to make it work. Thanks for sharing. That is an extremely beautiful table top you always have some outstanding work that you’re doing keep it up
Thanks for this. What a great demo. I'm considering Rubio for a faux distressed mantel I'm building, but can't find examples of it used on distressed wood. I want the scratched, dented, chunked areas to show contrasting color as a stain would do if you pooled it into those areas. Do you have any experience in this, and think I'd get the result I'm looking for? I feel like the buffing, etc. will be difficult with this, but I will be sanding the really rough edges of the distressed areas. TIA
Gorgeous finish Matt! Job well done! Sadly it seems you have ventured past (way past) the standard home woodworker with introductions into expensive tools and materials (festool, walnut and rubio are not cheap). Are you no longer using "tubafours" or pocket hole joinery? I think that's a reason a lot of us started following you was because you worked with tools and materials a lot of us could afford. Hope you don't abandon us. Thanks for getting me pointed into the right direction at the start.
Thank you. 3 weeks ago I did a pocket hole only project. ruclips.net/video/y3AxkIb4srQ/видео.html I also did a pocket hole night stand a few weeks before that. I like to push myself outside my comfort zone and try new things. Just because I do that, doesn't mean I don't make beginner projects like the videos I just mentioned.
I have a wood top island (Also walnut) that has spots where some chemical ate through the finish. I had been applying mineral oil to keep it uniform and fairly sealed. These spots are basically bare wood that the mineral oil isn't adhering to. The original finish was Waterlox. Would you recommend completely sanding and refinishing, or would monocoat or waterlox be able to be used on just those spots? Thanks for tips.
Great video, Chief! How do you think this would work on a lazy susan? I built a 17" susan from Sycamore, but I split it into four quadrants, using black walnut half-lapped in the middle...and after I posted it online for sale, it was bought by a friend in only SEVENTEEN minutes! (Originally, I had put polyurethane on the top platter, but I didn't like the way it looked, so I sanded it back to the bare wood and am gonna build up a really nice finish that should last her for generations). Thanks for all you do! Long time subscriber here. ~Dr. Larry Anderson • Tupelo, MS (birthplace of King Elvis!)
Looks great! Thank you so much for sharing. Question: after you filled in the gaps the second time with CA glue, did you immediately use the activator, or wait for awhile? If immediate, did you see any problems with trapped bubbles? I've tried both ways (letting the CA sit & dry naturally and popping bubbles as I see them with a heat gun, as well as using the activator right away), and in both cases, I've had trouble off and on with trapped bubbles in cracks with the Starbond. The only thing that seems to work consistently is doing it in layers.
It depends what I’m making. If I’m making a table that’ll see heavy use, I’ll use Rubio. If I’m making cutting boards, charcuterie boards etc I’ll use the tung oil/orange oil mix.

Matt, is it just personal preference that you only sand to 120 grit
Wow that's tabletop looks phenomenal

So many helpful tips! Constantly re-watching videos for my own projects. Also love the Christian T-shirts such a great way to subtly share the faith.

That’s how I did this one
Suman, you are spot on. hope you are doing well.
Does that mean you don’t glue the outer dominos?
Matt, thanks, this was a very good video. Very easy to follow and you didn’t over talk it. You kept everything to the point, quick and easy. Great video, I’m a big fan of Rubio. I’m using it on restaurant tables that I’m refinishing now.
That wood man, so beautiful, even without waxing it shines.
The top looks great and with the legs it looks amazing! Great job!
Thank you so much!

👍👍 I gave ya a thumbs up just because of your shirt , good video also 😉
Might want to check the SDS sheet for the "part B" hardener
Thanks for detailing the whole process!
Great looking table. Very informative, thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I keep learning so much!
Added this to a playlist on my channel. Thanks for the video.
Yes Rubio makes a really great product, great job 🤙🏻
Great stuff! Thank you! Saved this one for later reference.
I love that finish and thanks for sharing. It’s just beautiful!
Love the shirt. Bless you, brother.
Turned out real nice.
Thanks. I'll have to try this. How easy is it to apply and remove in corners such as where an apron meets a leg? Steve
it goes on and off very easy
Was watching Steve Ramsey's old vid on staining mistakes when the notification popped up! Love that color 🔥
Thank you
Awesome product. Thanks for the knowledge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the voiceover bubble
That's a beautiful finish.
Thank you
I love your tee shirts, my brother.
Very nice outcome! One of my to do projects for sale as a coffee table or larger dining table. Thank you for all the great Ideas and demos! 😎

Can you skip the 80 and maybe 120 grit if your milling process leaves a smooth surface?
Thanks!

Would love to see the domino making breadboard ends
Great video! Following this video/advice, I applied 2 coats of Rubio Monocoat to new walnut table top. Afterwords I realized I had use NATURA Monocoat. What’s the best way to remove Natura and apply Rubio?
Could you use this product after apply a grain filler... or would that interfere with the product's ability to penetrate the wood?
That for all the info! What would you suggest for pine to get a color similar to the farmhouse end tables you build?
I’m curious on your thoughts about using Rubio on a table that will spend it’s life outside on a covered lanai?
Turned out beautiful Matt! Great information!! Thank you for the content.

Would you mind showing us the contrast between buffing (for a brighter sheen) and just applying?
Check out this video ruclips.net/video/DrF-UWvcB6I/видео.html he buffs his out and gets that sheen.
This is so satisfying to watch
Thanks!
Looks great!

Thank you
Great video. Thank you.
Great video!
Thanks!
Do you need to put a pre stain conditioner one it for woods like maple that like to blotch
I only use pre stain on soft woods like pine/spruce. And if you are using something like Rubio and not stain, you wouldn't' need pre stain
@@731Woodworks thank you God bless you and your family.

light layers. I spray immediately
Good stuff!
With this finish, did you use a wood conditioner first so it doesn't get blotchy like with a normal stain?
No pre condition needed
do I have to use mineral spirits or are there other options? like maybe acetone?
I've seen acetone on another video.
Beautiful!!!!!
Thank you!!

@@731Woodworks Thanks! Do you prefer to do the mineral oil soak over the tung/orange oils for things like cutting boards?
I always get cotton debris when I wipe on finishes etc. How do you not get that
Wow sir it is absolutely beautiful
Thank you
Do you think this would be a good finish for a guitar?
Lol, I just did that the other day to make sure I had a straight cut.
Like the cameos
Thanks!
Nice advice 👊🏻
