The Canterville Ghost (1986) UK/US Integrated Cut

- Predominately the rarer UK VHS PAL cut, with the US cut opening integrated into the edit, and a scene-patch that corrects a PAL VHS version production fault.
Probably the most A-typical version of Oscar Wilde's story but by far my favourite of the ones I have seen. And that's saying something because the legend that was Rik Mayall is in the Patrick Stewart one!
I was really hoping that the excellent (and now sadly defunct) Network DVD in the UK would do an official release of the UK cut on DVD/Blu-Ray.
Dir. Paul Bogart
How truly wonderful to see Sir John Gielgud, forever in our memories and our hearts. ⚘
I'm in the US and have seen this movie a million times, as it was one of my favorites as a kid! So it's very interesting to see these missing scenes in it after all these years .Thank you for posting!
I grew up with this version so it was a nice surprise when I got to see the alternative US intro aboard the train!
The 1944 version is much better.
"We Americans & You English Sure Have A Lot In Common" ."Except Of Course Our Language ". All these years later & that still makes me laugh. Also the Geoffrey the Parrot joke about him being upside down as he's doing Yoga 🧘♂️ hilarious & witty.
While it's quite witty (about the language), it's also vastly exaggerated. You'd probably find greater differences between Bavarian dialect and north German dialect.
Sure do.
Lol and i cracked “its a time thing honey” lol generation gap
American Society compared to the English & Australian Society have nothing in common. Your Gun laws for a start describes the Society America lives in. No Thanks!!!
What a great idea. One hears of movies that have been chopped up, but less frequently of ones that have been put back together.
Thanks so much for seamlessly merging the two versions together it's so very much appreciated especially adding the UK cut of the castle grounds and special effects at the beginning & of course the fantastic John Gielgud and his wonderful poetry reciting and ghost appearance. I was so angry & disappointed to see that it had been cut.
The actors would have been FREEZING during this movie. It looks so cold for real.
I remember when I first saw this one on TV and I had it taped and since then I watched it 2 or3 times after that I lost my version in a fire and this is the 1st time I've seen it in years
I taped it off of TV and watched it to death back in '87. Very cosy feel to this movie.
Loved it .. watched this straight after the original
Charles Laughton film
This was not bad but the 1944 version is much better
This used to air on Australian TV every Easter Saturday at midday. Childhood memories...
When I was 12, this movie scared the hell out of me, everytime they showed that painting I had to close my eyes, reminded me of a dead chewbacca. And when that investigator summoned Sir Simon's wife and she kept on saying SI------Monnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, Si-monnnnnnnnnn. Terrifying.
👻 Thank you for this download
as you know
i have seen this
many times over.
It took me a minute to recognize Mrs. Umbly. She also played the inkeeper at The Slaughtered Lamb in An American Werewolf in London.
Wow, never saw that short little before-the-credits intro before. ...Anyone that wants to leave me a castle like that is welcome to do so!
how brilliant is Sir John how absoutely brilliant.
This version was the best one I’ve ever seen. And the added bonus cool .
Great film. Terrific cast.
Thank you, I don’t think I’ve watched this in 30+ years 😊. Just as good as I remember it!
Better than the 1996 version. IMO.
The canterville ghost has been done at least 4 or 5 times. ❤always a little different. 😊
Wonderful movie, thank you!🥰
I love how in this adaptation Sir Simon became a surrogate grandfather for Jenniffer and helped her to deal with her family conflicts (fear of losing her father and home and of forgetting her mother and not being liked by her boyfriend). Also letting him go to his rest by her own request, even with grieving his loss, also allowed her to finally make peace with her mother’s death. Of course Sir John was magnificent as always and this whole shooting was a master class for the rest of cast and crer. But the ability of young Alyssa to convey emotions even without speaking was also remarkable at her age. Her face at the final scene just broke my heart.
I'd love the UK Cut fully restored with great sound & picture quality on DVD or blu ray with special features especially of Eastnor Castle Oscar Wilde & the story itself and cast & crew footage interviews etc throw in a poster of the ghost & printed copy of the story etc. That would be simply marvellous !!
I just hope the original UK Cut masters still exist. The last place I know that used to show this cut was Sky back in about 1993. Maybe Paul Bogart's estate has the means to acquire them.
Such a cool old movie. Oh how I miss these movies. My first but not last time to watch this movie.
Oh my God, now I know where Tim Burton got the idea for Beetlejuice. The couple with a daughter who rides her bike to school. The mother, who is the girls stepmother, and the dinner scene where the ghost scares the guests.
♥️THE BEST REMAKE♥️
I just love this movie, Sir John Gielgud is superb and funny!! And the music too!
"... will put in central heating, the vents tastefully concealed..." If nothing else, this gives away an American, not having a clue of modern heating systems, like floor heating, for example.
All in all, a most enjoyable story.
This is a really good film to watch
been searching for this... thanks for posting this..
No worries. I've got the feeling that the masters of this UK cut are long gone. When ITV's regional areas merged, a lot of the the regional studios wiped all of their stuff (Central for example). I'd very much wager that HTV would have voided their vaults, destroying this cut forever. The only other place that may have an original master is Sky. They used to show this cut in the early 90s.
Thanks for the upload
Loved this version.
Hey,I'm watching this guy,the father in the train. He's acting in the series SOAP. I've just reached the part that he needs a kidney transplant and discovers, his uncle is actually his father. I can see this movie is going to be a perfect 10🥰💯🔥
I love this version
Is there a bad movie with Sir Arthur John Gielgud?
I never watched this one before.
Thank you very much for sharing❤
What a lovely family movie :)
Where are the twins and washington ???
I would like to see the first one made
Very good movie. They don’t make them like they used to.
Great movie thank you 🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖💖
The opening soundtrack was in Robin Hood love that
Nice one, thank you 🏴👍
36:23 Bwahahahahaha CLASSIC!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
With Mother England involved, any US film will be greater!❤
This film is a double miracle. Anything from Oscar Wilde is a masterpiece, and the masterpiece in the hands of its own countrymen makes it doubly so. What I find very deep in the story is the sin and redemption belief and the God of Death being kindly (like how the Hindus believe)....And Sir John (Gielgud)...nothing more need to be said!!!
The US opening is a little jarring....but you forget it within 15 minutes.
I would like someone to follow Wilde's book closer. This is a great version though. The version with Patrick Stewart is great, too.
This movie inspired me to get a walkman lol
Locomotive 92203 ‘Black Prince’ North Norfolk Railway 1959-1967. Wish I had my 1960 Ian Allen book to check whether I spotted it but my Mum said mice got into my cardboard suitcase while I was at university so she threw out all my school & hobby books & papers.
North Norfolk still run Black Prince!
Blooming heck, the young girl is Alyssa Milano !!!!
And Blossom's dad!/Danny from Soap!
Yesss😊
What a fun watch
How can a movie be made of this when half the cast is missing? Where are the boys that torment the ghost into depression?
I think if I read the story first I would have been very disappointed in this adaptation. But this was my very first encounter with the story and I actually do not really enjoy the twins characters in more faithful adaptations.
@@DrStef007 Did you read the book yet? I thought the twins were what made the book so good. The ghost got to the point where he was terrified of the twins and got so depressed and offended because he wasn't able to scare the family.
It was really offended once when the father offered him oil for his rattling chains so that he wouldn't make so much noise at night. 😄
@@witchhazel4135 That does sound pretty funny, and I have seen other versions where the twins feature. But they usually come off as obnoxious. Not sure why this version stripped all that back. I think the Walkman scene was a nod to all that and Sir Simon getting a taste of his own medicine. This has a different mood, like a stripped-down "Beetlejuice". It is fun but ultimately quite melancholy and Alyssa Milano plays her last scene, in the graveyard, with surprising darkness.
You guys know something? I am about halfway through this movie, I think, and I still don't like the stepmother. I saw this movie with my grandma when I was seven. Still don't care for her but the little girl is still an absolute doll and this is a classic for me.
Such a cool movie ,,,

Sir Gielgud 👏👏 Lucky Alisa Milano😊
OMG Mr. Magoo is in it! I mean Sir John Gielgud. I bet he is the Ghost!
I uploaded the DVD version on my channel. US version though.
This movie is a classic rainy Sunday afternoon watch. Only The Goonies and the original Blair Witch also fit into that category for me.
@goose093 I checked it out. Unfortunately, it doesn't have closed captions, so it's back to this one. DVD has clearer audio and visual quality is much better. However, I really need CC.
@@debbieellett9093Mine is the DVD version. That's the best quality you will ever get since there is no better film transfer. The DVD doesn't contain any subtitle, So this one is auto generated by youtube.
@goose093 thanks for the information. Have a great day🙂
This version is much better
What tha heel bobby'
It is possible that I saw that movie in french ? I remember seeing it long ago but it was in french, as I didn't knew english at the time. Just out of curiosity.
I think there is a French dubbed version here on RUclips somewhere.
Here it is : ruclips.net/video/pIVAhk91NVw/видео.html
;D Very enjoyable
This scene was hilarious 😂😂😂

The funny thing is that it's a stuntman and woman falling from the bed into the lake, but poor old Ted and Andrea really had to slog it through that bog. That must have been freezing and miserable!
❤
don't think I like the changes they made to a classic for this movie version of an otherwise good story
This is first version I've seen so I found no flaw and enjoyed it very much.
@@LoisHarris-n8e I also enjoyed it just didn't appreciate the changes they made

Alls well that ends well right?
Love Sir John Gielgud but not interested in watching the original with Charles Laughton Robert Young n Margaret O’Brien was the best Laughton was a hoot can’t top his performance as the ghost
where are the twins?
Not in this one. An element from the original story that, controversially, I am glad doesn't feature in this version. I've never liked that element in the other versions I have seen as I saw this version first. I am aware though that The Twins are part of Oscar Wilde's original text.

Hello!
❤❤❤❤❤😊
The original Oscar Wilde`s novella is fun and ironic: it shows the difference beteween English and American culture and values. And it is real funny. Why this picture doesn´t respect the real story. as Wilde wrote it ?
Any way, this picture is quiet good and Sir John Gielgud make it better!!!
Is that Kristy Macnichols
It's Alyssa Milano.
1:00:14 Bwahahahahaha the ghost hunter fainted when he saw Sir Simon
I prefer the original story. It really can't be beaten. I do like John Gielgud, but apart from that, I wouldn't recommend this version at all.
Sorry you are mistaken. All versions after this one were shallow and not exciting. This version keeps the audience interested. As for Sir John G, he was a genius! The part was perfect for him.
@@aussiedownunder4186 that's just your opinion. We should agree to disagree

No or you would love It duh
The movie was lame enough to be a Disney production.
😁 You loved it!
Very poor copy. Barely watchable!
Until it gets a proper remastered release, this is about as good as the full cut is ever going to get.
Charles Laughton was the best
NOPE!!!!!
Great movie
