    There are few things more lovely than a well-filmed black and white movie from earlier days. Just story, people, and sets. The clothes, the house, the furniture, and the beautiful voice of James Mason and a picture of a life in other days come together to make art. I'll take a movie like this over any new CGI excessive sense onslaught. Thank you for this film.

    While I was watching this, I wondered how they were going to sustain the tension and resolve it at the end...I've seen other 'ghost stories' only to experience a sense of letdown or disappointment at the end.
    NOT the case with this one!! They couldn't touch a story like this today with a 10-foot pole, and if they tried to remake it, it would be a flop. Artistry and talent are no longer synonymous with movies anymore, sadly.

      I don't know how you liked it. It starts off with the acting going in the background - people talking and no music for the beginning and then when it goes to acting itself it is all out of sync. The wrong people talking at the wrong time. You get a woman's voice talking to another woman in the sound and a man talking to woman on the screen - that sort of thing. Very confusing.

Nothing to do with the actual movie and how it was produced, because I presume it was correct on a DVD when it was uploaded to youtube, or that it was recorded correctly from a TV but the recording went wrong in the uploading onto youtube. I just started it again at the very beginning and THIS TIME the music started up and it seems to be in synch. At the time of my comment, I could not get the synching right. The movie started with conversation, not music and the whole way through the sounds were all over the place and the lip movements weren't correct. I clicked in different parts of the movie with the same issue all the way through. Now it is working. That's technology for you! I will have a good look at the movie when I get some time.

Anyway, today's films lack this kind of character. James Mason, what a character he was. Always a man of integrity, so it would seem. There's no way he could play some plain Joe. Such a delight watching him. So refreshing to watch this kind of old haunted ghost story. Even though this was a ghost story, it wasn't vulgar or even too scary. James Mason was quite believable in this role! Wish he were still alive so I could tell him how much I enjoyed his portrayal while still young...
      It was a prediction of his artistry of his profession and craft that he went on to entertain us with over the years.
      Maybe in keeping with the theme of this film that he can sense our praise from another "world"!

    Nearly 40 years after appearing in this movie , James Mason appeared in the film “Salem’s Lot “. He was a protector of the villainous vampire, named Mr. Barlow.
    The police inspector in this film that Mason’s character had dealt with was named…Barlow…

I loved every part of them, especially the dresses. As I got into my teens, I was able to raid my mom's old cedar chest and wore her clothes from the mid 30's to mid 40's!
    After all these years people still remember me for my " bohemian" style of dress when it was actually just my mom's clothes and not very many bell bottom pants that was the style in my teenage years.

    “..Ernest Thesiger contrives in something under two minutes to give a performance that is masterly.” Line from review of A Place of One’s Own. The Tatler and Bystander, May 16, 1945 Thank you so much for this great film. Mr. Thesiger was an Edwardian stage actor. I was only privileged with seeing his wonderful characterizations in films. Most of them were eccentrics like the Undertaker in Sim's Scrooge or Horace Fem in The Old Dark House. He was marvelous in all. However, this is the only romantic lead type I've ever seen him portray. Splendid. It made me cry.

      Not only his performance, but the way the director chose to shoot his scene was brilliant. Another thing to note is how his character was the exact opposite in every aspect of the doctor who arrived from London. That was also a brilliant bit of directing, and very well played.

    • @MinorKeyDancing
      @MinorKeyDancing 2 года назад +1

      @@WaterShowsProd I agree! The long take up the stairs was awesome. Dr. Marsham doesn't look for someone to wait upon him or show him where to go, he knows. It gives it away a bit and yet we knew he was in the house before. Wonderful ending. The way they disguised Mr. Thesiger using a veil over the lense and filming in silhouette and from the back, the legerdemain of this really amazed me. Mr. Thesiger was Dr. Marsham. I have since watched every Thesiger performance I could find and have yet to find an equal to this one.

    James mason is so great in this movie! I didn,t know what a wonderful character actor he was. He could carry the whole movie and it got a lot better when he took control and started to carry on the investigating. Like Oliver's character in "sleuth". His unmistakable voice is always a treat. Of course the part with Dr. Marshim is so creepy, you know he,s dead; but the ending is a let down. All the suspense for nothing-like most books and mysteries. But then, how else could it have been all pulled together? Well, a pleasure, anyways.

Its becomes more important to realize that many of those we hold dear and with high esteem are from those elements of society. Mason the son of a well to do Yorkshire business family. Lockwood , born in India where her father was a Railway official. Dulcie Gray the maid .born in Malaya where her father ran a plantation. Dennis Price from a family with aristocratic connections . Mullen born in the US of A .That's what I call an interesting cast .
