- Mike Phillips along with Oley Jentzsch, the President of Flitz Metal Polishes, show you how to remove years of oxidation and corrosion on aluminum Mag wheels the quick and easy way using the Flitz Mag Wheel Restoration Kit. Using an electric drill, Flitz Metal Polish and the unique Flitz Buff Ball, anyone can get professional results using the techniques Oley and Mike share in this how-to video.
Nice work. I love it when people care enough to restore things rather than throwing them out and buying new...
Very good materials and tools
My friend in Bermuda has been using Flitz since around the mid-90's. He used to use it on his motorbike aluminum parts. He buffed them to a chrome like finish. I forgot this product even existed until I saw this clip.
I've never personally used it, but I know for a fact that it does exactly what these guys say it does.
I once seen my friend use this product on his Centerline Convo Pro's it was one of the best products I've seen. He didn't clean it(his rims) just used Flitz and done. Good Product
If you bought a set, I would have like to seen a before and after completely polished wheel
I love slot mags, especially on Full Size Jeeps!
@NCHarleyHardtail
Oley is a great guy and it was fun making this video with him.

@TheWhiteye004 you got that right, my polished wheels look just like chrome. I don't think a drill has the required RPM's to do a mirror chrome like finish.
@BassmanSW
They are aluminum and they are still on my truck parked right outside my office. I have also purchased a second set of slotted mags for another truck and will be polishing this second set for another article including sanding them down. -Mike
Yes that will work but I highly recommend Jeweler's Rouge with a grinder, if you want a true mirror finish, look at how DC shine does it, semis have a lot more abuse on the aluminum versus a passenger vehicle!!
That looks great!
Mike is the man!
Hey I'm working with my dad trying to polish up my aluminum rims. We've already got the clear coat off of one of them and sanded down the really bad areas and we tried a cloth wheel and some waxes that made a huge difference but it tears up the cloth wheels extremely fast and they're rather expensive. I'm looking for a cheaper solution that will last through all four rims without emptying our wallets. Maybe felt wheels would help?
@autogeek I've recently been working on a set of "10 hole" mid-80s GT wheels. All clear was stripped, casting marks removed via sanding. then sanding from 200-2000 grit. I've polished three times with Mothers mag and aluminum polish which has done a great job with each successive polish. Just for kicks, I picked up some Flitz at a hardware store and tried it on a small spot and I am sold on adding Flitz to the arsenal.
@Mk2ification
It was easy... I buff and rub out paint all the time, working on a set of aluminum wheels is kind of fun. Copy and paste the below sentence into Google and see what I did after Oley left.
Old School Aluminum Slotted Mag Wheels - Extreme Makeover
The wheels in the article are on my truck today. -Mike
If the aluminum is pitted then you'll need to sand. Flitz makes these products called Flitz Mini ScuffPads, which are like Scotchbrite pads only with a #1500 grit cut to them and they work great for removing the initial oxidation. Call our Customer Care Hotline and they can set you up with some. 1-800-869-3011 -Mike
@ror3dracer01
Last time I checked I didn't see any identifying marks on this set of slotted mags. I can look again and post back here if I find anything. -Mike
@sam88vue
If you're wheels have a clear coat finish then take care of them with products intended for clear coated wheels, not straight aluminum. For more specific help check out the AutogeekOnline . net discussion forum. -Mike

@eeprete
Good eye! Just to point out... this was a "short" video, we'll show the sanding process when we make that really l-o-n-g video... LOL
-Mike Phillips
No idea. Back when slotted mags were made Ansen was a brand so was American Racing, Keystone. There were others too...
Yes. -Mike Phillips
Just what's posted. Keep in mind this video is now 3 years old as I type today on May 28th, 2013

@rubbindubbin4life
Sandpaper would put scratches into the aluminum. Try using some type of paint remover.
-Mike
What are your ideas for cleaning up some oxidized motor parts like on a Mustang valve cover ?while being still installed?
You just have to do the best you can. Look at some of the buffing pads you can use from Mothers, Flitz and Meguiar's.

I just purchased some American racing polished wheels. will this technique provide a mirror finish?
what if my wheels have clear coat on them already?
@ShaunArmstrong93
Hi Shaun, I would need a good picture to really see what's going on to give you advice. Sounds like a horrible problem though and sometimes it's more cost effective to just get new wheel. -Mike
i find it funny i seached this video cause i wanted to clean the exact same rims that there cleaning
I recommend going over the rim with super fine steel wool with soapy water. Then go with the buffing ball with polish.
How can i take off spray paint off of alluminum wheels?? With out messing up the alluminum wheels..i feel as sandpaper would mess them up.
@TheDw2012
They make wool pads for rotary buffers that are small and pretty tough, I've used them with good results. Join the AutogeekOnline . net discussion forum as it's easier to include pictures and links to help you versus this message system on RUclips - Mike
i have some aluminum rims that where chrome plated and i got them from craigslist for 40 dollars but the chrome was chipping up and the old owner spray painted them how would you recommend removing the paint and chrome so i can get them powder coated i feel that sand blasting would be to harsh on the rims?
I'm attempting to polish my bare aluminum wheels with the Flitz wheel kit. Some spots are coming out great while some aren't even after multiple passes. I wet sanded the wheels from 400-2000 grit so they're is very little pitting or blemishes.
Would you guys suggest spraying the buff ball with a mist of water while polishing to keep the Flitz from drying up? I'm wondering if that's my issue.
Can you use Flitz on wheel rim WITH Tyre ON? for maintenance?
I wish you guys had have shown more close up views of the polishing job. i couldnt tell how good your product from where the camera filmed. didnt look like a chrome like finish. do you have more videos?
I have aluminum wheels with a rougher orange peel surface that isn't naturally smooth. Would this method still work to get them shining or do you recommend a different technique?
Got a ? .. I got a set of 22 Intro polished billet wheels and they have small white dots and fine scratches on the face of the wheels.. polishing by hand and a drill will not remove them.. any advise on how to remove them? thanks for the help
Will this extend Summer? Becuase Summer in Seattle is two months.
Nope. But I know what you mean about summer in the Northwest, I live in Oregon for about 41 years and covered Oregon, Washington and Idaho in my route for 3 years. I also owned a Sanger Drag Boat that I ran in Oregon for 20 years so I'm very aware of the short summers in the Northwest.

Just curious, How did the factory get that unique satin shine that is so hard to duplicate?
Can these treat bead corrosion as well?
Really hard to say without seeing them. When you polish them you see black oxidation coming off onto your applicator?
-Mike Phillips
I have a set of mag wheels which came off a 69 vette, the bad news they were stored in an out building.
I need to sell them, but looking for a way to polish them, this system looks like what I need.
Are your products in any retail stores?
Can this be used on black wheels with a machine polished lip?
@kuabara182
Thanks, that wheel is now on my truck!
-Mike Phillips
If they are factory CLEAR COATED and they probably are, then use a good paint cleaner or fine cut paint polish. Best thing to do is to join our forum, it's a lot easier for me to help you on a normal discussion forum versus this tiny and limited message box. AutogeekOnline . NET
-Mike Phillips
Why not send them out for clear baked powder coat after polishing?
Mind I ask? I have wheels very similar . Same slot pattern. But only a 5 lug pattern do you know what model wheels these are?. Di
what make are your wheels
and does your inside say JAPAN 8004-5
i have ones exactly the same as yours but i have a 5 bolt Mopar, Ford, AMC bolt pattern
Make any products that take the "white rust" from chrome wheels? The guy said not to use this stuff on chrome.
U need to put what ur using in info
Yes but if the scratches you put in are deep you might have to do some sanding first with something like #2000 grit to get the surface "flat" again. Best thing to do would be to call our Customer Care Reps at 1-800-869-3011
Wow 8 or 9 years ago and RUclips videos was here... 2019 ....😵
It's aluminum. "Mag" is the style of the wheel.
@MartyInLa Guess its worth buying then...
pretty cool *points at elbow*
Is that product toxic to the environment? Ok to hose down the drain?
@TheWhiteye004 The problem is you're using the wrong polish! Did you see Blue magic in this video? No.

how about an OEM aluminum rim that's been stripped of the paint...bare aluminum...not a rim that's been polished before.
hello
His idea of good condition wheels is different cause he's payin for em. They could be corrosion buckets, the seller would still call them good.
I like Flitz, but that stuff is hella pricey!

Look like chrome ??
I heard he calls that white rust
He should of sanded them down too missed that important step
Come on..them are easy rims to do..show us how to do a Dodge Monte SS rim or IROC Z rim
shouldn't u cut first use sandpaper
This got to be the worst video ever seen. No close-ups of the rim after it was polished.
What a joke
sorry crap
there an easier way
YEAH.BUY NEW RIMS
SMH..had to keep rubbing my unbelieving eyed..I'm hearing Dan Akyroid voice from 1970s but seeing a very short Vince Mcmahon Demoing to Biff from Back to the future.
