Astonishing, one of if not the best live performances of any classic track.Im not musically knowledgeable at all but I imagine this a very difficult track to play live.At the beginning when the intro breaks into the actual track the drum beating is mind blowing.
these guys were the best band in the world .....this version is a dream ,,,,,what genius talent these fellas had . long live the 60s era i was fortunate to be there xxxxx
Thanks Wilson. that is a great read, the slide show a great watch and the song is one of my all time favourites. never heard this live version til now (2019) and i love it. thanks again
@ wilson mcphert........Oh thank you, whilst different, what a treasure! The studio version was up here in Australia for one whole day! I was so incensed to find it removed that I checked your most excellent channel. Well done!!!
Man, I wish Dave had stayed with Traffic for a few more years. Oh, well--beginning with Alone Together he put out a bunch of great albums. thanks for posting this. 'o)
***** Thx man! A bit more Dave's than Traffic when they parted ways if I might say so, watched Traffic in the 70's and it was nice but I enjoyed more the lots of times I went to see the Dave Mason Band, once he even opened for newcomers Fleetwood Mac (with Stevie Nicks, Buckingham and Chris. Mcvie) now you can call that a great double header, Later!
+longlostgus Do you have Dave's new album (Future's Past), Gus? a little old stuff, a little new. He's been touring behind it. You can get it from his site. davemasonmusic.com Cheers, Skip
@ wilson mcphert........It makes ME very happy you own/ed the single too! I couldn't believe how quickly it was removed here (they are so strict, no idea why) and I'd waited and watched for it from the moment I bought my iPad a little over a year ago. Still have 3 Traffic albums in good condition, the wonderful Blind Faith CD, yet for some unknown reason, I have never owned this one. If you DO still have the original single, would it be possible to try putting it up again? You'd make an old Aussie very happy indeed. Kind regards, Linda.
I love this live version! Never heard it before either. Unfortunately you can't hear the great original studio version by Traffic on You Tube anymore which is a real shame..
I saw them play a free concert in London's Hyde Park when Mason had rejoined the band and they were releasing their second album. It was a lovely summers day and they were excellent. Stevie Winwood wore his red trousers that he never seemed to take off.
This live performance, while not perfect, dispels the long-held misconception that Traffic never performed this song live. Great introduction by Dave Mason on sitar and soon after the others quietly join in.
How. Fuckin. Trippy. Is. THAT?! Took me straight back to 1967, at school in the UK, where I heard this for the first time. Mind-blowing. Psychedelic. Life-altering. Which is why I still like it now B-)
Ed Rybicki. Hell yeah. You sound like a cool old man. I wish I could have experienced it first hand. Sadly, I was born in 87. I have had some great psychedelic experiences though and what's good about nowadays is that we have this enormous catalogue of great music from all ages to enjoy. But still, experiencing something first hand is like no other.
Thanks for posting this never heard this live version before have the single picture sleeve.i believe the middle bit was spoken by chris blackwell of island records young daughter
I know that no child speaks on the live version i was talking about the recorded single version which i said i have in a picture sleeve if you had bothered to read it properly and she did .ithen said i believe it to be that in pure english is not taken as pure fact just my belief if it was chris blackwells daughter or not i dont know for sure and never stated that as a fact .!!!
This hit is "rarely performed" live, yes, and it is a shame because it is such a good song, I miss it every time I listen to a live record from Traffic. The Sweden 1967 recording is nice, but give it a couple of years, with new musical instruments and tools, this song could have become far more better than some of the ususal live stuff (sorry Traffic).
Josef Nagy: Just how many 'Live' Traffic albums do you listen to? Answer: None! There are very few 'live' '67 recordings (other than BBC Sessions) of the original Traffic. The only one I know of is Copenhagen '67 which is a radio recording that happens to feature this track and Utterly Simple! Apart from that there is the Christmas On Earth (Cont.) footage also from '67. That's about it! As for the 'new musical instruments and tools' bit, I have no idea what you are talking about!
The '67 Copenhagen Bootleg is worth tracking down. There's a great version on that! Also the 'Christmas On Earth (Cont)' '67 footage is essential viewing!
Thank's i remember listening to this record as a child though not this version . This version ( especially at the beginning ) , sounds like they were into Indian mysticism like the Beatles in those day's. This is a live version of the song with pictures of the event . I thought that it was actually a live version with the band playing the instruments on stage . My bad . But good , anyway
I think he rejoined the band twice. But the second time was probably only as a special guest for a UK Tour in 1971. It was recorded and released in edited form as the album "Welcome to the Canteen"
I never knew they had ever performed this live. I had tickets to see Traffic in 1968 but Stevie was "ill" and couldn't perform. Instead they had Jethro Tull, Ten Years After and a band simply called "Family". I think this was a silver lining.
Dave Mason is a brilliant guitarist. It's a pity he didn't keep up with his Sitar Lessons. Steve Winwood is also a brilliant guitarist. It's an even bigger pity that they can't Just Forget their egos & differences, after ALL THIS TIME.😢
I still love and play Traffic's albums, have quite a bit of their live material but this is the first time I have heard such a version of Hole in my Shoe. Thanks so much wilson. I wonder whether Mason wanted more sitar on the studio take?
Thanks. Does anyone know exactly when in the sixties Traffic toured with Mason in tow? With his comings and goings, I can't figure out when he actually toured with them in the sixties. Thanks.
i felt sad mason was cut out of the group but i guess stevie winwood didnt want him in the band i mean look at the first lp its great & the live lp with dave mason is good.i guess when you have someone as talented as winwood you have great guitar or keyboard & vocal.i heard the other members of traffic didnt mind him but steve winwood felt they had musical differences.yeah ive heard a few line ups.but mason did carry on i saw an lp called like you never left so yeah maybe some bad feeling.but they both made traffic special for me & obviously chris wood & capaldi .that said traffic still made some great music without mason great post great band peace...
What a strange career path Dave Mason has had! He started off as a genius, and then acquired an American accent and political opinions so far to the right that even a moderate social and cultural conservative such as myself finds them deeply troubling. His music also went rapidly from brilliance to highly accomplished mediocrity.
Mason's solo work after Traffic didn't produce anything of note. Certainly they were not 'great albums'! Let's not talk the guy up eh? He was around, he was integral to the original Trafffic, he plays up his relationship with Hendrix and as I saw in a very recent interview, promoting his reappearance as a heritage act, fancies himself as the kingpin of the band. I think he's desperate!
Agree, Dave Mason's biggest fan was Dave Mason. He had his moments and a few radio hits through the decades kept him on the B-list. And indeed he was part of the original chemistry and magic of Traffic. But outside fo that pretty forgettable.
@@andythomas706 Alone Together was a good album and he had a good live show during the 70's, early 80's with a truly great backing band but he was not the star of Traffic, in fact they did just fine without him.
@@georgewbergantz2843 He was a bit delusional. When asked if he would consider rejoining Traffic, he said the question is, would he consider letting them join him!

Astounding! I just always thought I'd never hear a live version of one of my favourite 60s UK singles!
One of the most unforgettable radio played songs of the 60's. I was in awe when I first heard this as a young teenager. Magical.
This, as I am lowered into my grave.
Absolutely incredible.
Amazing - never heard a live version of this wonderful song
Me too!
Brilliant live version, love the sitar intro and those heavy drum beats
It is magnificent!
Dave Mason was, is and shall continue to be an amazing artist.
Was he ever! Underrated!!! This song is such a dreamy trip!
One of the best psychedelic songs .....it's so strange ....the ending is masterful......who says drugs don't work!
Totally! A beautiful, trippy, dreamy mess!! God Bless the psychadellic 60s!
Love this and dave masons just for you.
Utterly brilliant post. Splendid sitar at the outset, too. Inspired, sir...inspired...
Colin Mc, I gotta hand it to you Britt's. Some great music and musicians came from Great Britain.
I bought the single of this song in 1967. Its magic has never worn off.
Excellent effort, thanks so much for putting this together!
Beautiful, so typical of the mystical songs of the time such as Paper Sun, Whiter Shade of Pale, I am the Walrus, Lucy in the Sky, Rainbow Chaser.
Mad Traffic fan then, i was fifteen, bought the three singles and the first two albums. bootlegged gigs like this are rare and much treasured.
I was five years old living in East Norwalk, Connecticut, heard this from a window.
Astonishing, one of if not the best live performances of any classic track.Im not musically knowledgeable at all but I imagine this a very difficult track to play live.At the beginning when the intro breaks into the actual track the drum beating is mind blowing.
Best version I've heard. Loved the original when it came out. 16 at the time.

Top draw, you could feel it building smooth like a wave, then breaks over you, genus
The use of sitar was inspired by George Harrison of "The Beatles" -- which was the best band in the world.
I can listening to this so many times
The sitar makes it complete👍👍👍
I will cover this very soon
Thanks for this Wilson! Bought the single on release, as I did with Paper Sun.
a wonderful 60's piece.
Fantastic ! , Thanks For The Treat ... : )
This is absolutely brilliant. I never thought I would see a live rendition of this song.
So wonderful to hear Traffic with sitar playing 1 of the best songs ever :~)
Thanks Wilson. that is a great read, the slide show a great watch and the song is one of my all time favourites. never heard this live version til now (2019) and i love it. thanks again

I saw Dave Mason a few years ago at a Half-Full venue in the centre of Liverpool. In a Club would have made for a better atmosphere.
Great Guitarist.
Oh man thanks for uploading this, it’s a beautiful song and just as good live.
Wow that blew my mind👏👏Awesome

Thanks for this great rarity!
Fantastic! Never heard it live before, not too bad......
Love sitar music! ❤️
Dave Mason genius!
Timeless. Thank you.
Beautiful. Pop music was so original then. What happened?
I'm surprised not a single soul today in Rock, hasn't picked up the Sitar and come up w/ a tune or two.
I came up w/ dueling sitars , a spoof on dueling banjos , that count?
Beck uses a sitar on 'Loser'.
I saw them play a free concert in London's Hyde Park when Mason had rejoined the band and they were releasing their second album. It was a lovely summers day and they were excellent. Stevie Winwood wore his red trousers that he never seemed to take off.
