      Maybe the movie deliberately refused to elaborate too deeply on the otherworldly skeleton. I say deliberate because of the theme of the movie, nihilism. Basically, there was no meaning or value to the nature of the skeleton, its origin and nature were insignificant.

      I agree with you. It's still altogether a crap movie. Humans since their conception have made numerous attempts to prove they are special. More so than the rest. That they have a purpose more important than others. When the fact is we all have purpose we mean nothing but collectively we perpetuate time, who's only purpose is unknown. Being to small outside said collective to understand it. It is in joining the collective and fulfilling your purpose do you understand it. It's boring tho. This has been done already.

A masterclass in real characters, eerie, bone-chilling horror, thematic storytelling (tons of symbolism in the bridge, the chimes), and sound-design. The skeleton was a human who was hosting the entity before Paul, similar to how Paul hosted it before passing it into James who was a perfect empty man for it, and probably lead to the being entering our world finally

    My take on it: “empty man” is just a way of describing someone who is nihilistic. Our moral compass, religious believes, and consequences of our actions keep us on a similar path. Once you break to a point of no return turning away from any hierarchy, and a belief in right or wrong the world becomes meaningless. I believe the people who inevitably caused their own demise couldn’t live with this reality devoid of fate. It’s a dangerous game to play with your perception of right and wrong because once you learn you make your own reality it can take positive or negative affects. Remember not everyone thinks the same. We simply have societal norms. A group of nihilistic people would ultimately lead to destruction imo. Trust, empathy, love, hate etc. would be useless. Let me know your take on it. ✌🏻

    "Positive" nihilism actually exists. Nothing actually matters, so the only things that do matter are what you yourself ascribe to things. There is no greater purpose, so you make one for yourself. Morality doesn't exist, so you follow your own morals. Its a liberating form of thought.
    For me, its very middling to think that way, but whatever makes others happy I guess... Though I'm not one to judge since I'm agnostic.
    Edit: I apologize that I wasn't calling it the correct thing. I had to look it up, but what I was referring to was "Optimistic Nihilism." Before anyone else says that isn't a thing, google it real quick.

    • @AddictedApple
      @AddictedApple 3 года назад +17

      Technically speaking, there *cant* be a thing such a "positive" nihilism since it's an oxymoron. There is also no such thing as negative nihilism. Psychology teaches us that there's only nihilism, and if you don't fall into that exact category, you're just something else. Which is how most terms work. The closest definition of similarity is probably a cynic.
      Humans do weird things with language to make themselves feel special though like how many people are ascribing "neurodivergency" to everything nowadays, when it just means thinking in an unconventional problem solving way.

    So basically, if James had just given himself some self-love and self-care, he could have avoided this entire predicament.
    That seems to be the idea, create a Tulpa into being and give them a horrific backstory and mentally wear them down so that the Empty Man can take them over.
    Should the Tulpa have enough will power and self-confidence though, they should be able to resist such things.

      James mental health plays a pivotal factor throughout the movie. From his wife and child being killed, finding dead teens pushed him further away from himself. Finding out Nora and Amanda were pawns to get him where he was, finally disconnected James which where the empty man was able to bond with him.
      Experiencing repeated truamas creates a disconnect in the mind, a disconnect between emotions and actions. James killing Paul so confidently was him accepting the emptiness in his heart.

    I’m confused, did his affair with Nora even happen? Did his wife/kids even exist? It’s mentioned that the Empty Man targeted him because of his trauma and grief from his family’s deaths, but then Amanda says his entire “life” is made up, so did he ever even have a family?

      I think they are implying they conjured him out of thin air and he's just a person made up of grief and heartache, and the empty man can now transfer from a human body to this made up one that only came into existence out of imagined and manifested grief sorrow and trauma as his entire experience and all he knows. So they made a person out of thin air, and the empty man picked him because of his existing in pure emptiness and sadness as a perfect host. I think the two things are separate. Step one was make a perfect host out of thin air that would attract the empty man, and then get the empty man to target and possess him. And since he's made up, maybe he will be a better host with immortality unlike the natural human who is falling apart. Could be wrong?

    Empty can be a descriptive term referring to someone who has achieved Nirvana. Something tells me that the malignant influence of the being might have something to do with Buddhism or an ancient form of Buddhism that people don't practice anymore.
    When you achieve Nirvana or enlightenment in buddhism, you transcend the flesh, desire, and everything else and become 100% empty.

    • @serlaz174
      @serlaz174 2 года назад +6

      to me it feels like buddhists chase "true" death, since in their opinion, all sensation eventually leads to suffering. I fell into it a few years back to deal with an ego death... and after all this time, buddhist-type beats are still my least favorite of all the existential religions/philosophies out there.
      For me, we're supposed to feel and react to stimuli in order to grow. Positive or negative, everything we experience gives textures to our mind. Like we're continously building ourselves as a piece of art, which is often a vulnerable and unforgiving process. Well, I guess it's supposed to be, because we are all our own magnus opus... for a short 70 years or so.
      My gripe with buddhism is that it's essentially a nihilist preaching oblivion under the pretense of compassion. Of course I have great respect to actual practiotioners and devotees who are brave enough to commit to any philosphy, it just feels like a perspective so jaded that the guy who made it up wanted everyone else to give up too.
      I'd rather take a look at why we can think and feel and move from there, instead of ignoring those sensations and honing in on feeling the lack of them.
      I've been on both sides and all I can say is that I feel slightly less hate-irony about existing if I choose to explore "why" instead of "why not". Neither sides end, but at least with "why" I can come up with my own answer. For why nots... well, the answer is self-apparent to all.

    By the end I realized one thing - I embody the Empty Man. This just adds another to my already miserable existence. Happy days are here never more.

    This movie is a masterpiece!
    Got screwed by the studios, but worth a watch !
    One of my favorites now.
    Will be a cult classic.

      Too bad this movie is to deep for the general public. Evidenced by the top comments in this thread all being about "Why didn't they explain that weird skeleton, is it a alien?"

      @@alwayslookingatself If You have prior knowledge of Eldritch Horrors, Lovecraft's work and other such tropes, then it becomes obvious.
      It's not that the public isn't capable, it's that people must go out of their way to find something challenging nowadays.
      "For general audience" means "dumb down" now.

    Love it, The only thing i'd say is change the backround music into something more like scarier or like something that gives you the one type of vibe, If you know, you know.

    Nihilism is a brainlet belief for those that believe they've stumbled upon some novel enlightening concept when in reality they're telling the world that a cheeseburger tastes like a cheeseburger as if nobody else has ever tasted one before.
