My dad saw commercials of The California Raisins back in the 1980s and me and him watched Meet the Raisins and Raisins Sold Out and I have Meet the Raisins on CD.

Hardee's / Carls' JR really pushed the California raisins back in the day. Funny how that added to the popularity.

The guy who discovered this prototype in the early 2000s was murdered by his roomates for his videogame collection. They thought this prototype would sell for a huge sum of money, but he had already dumped it to the internet before they killed him.

I remember my mom buying me a multi-title strategy guide, like How To Win At Video Games 3 or something that had this game in it. She was a teacher and got it at a book fair. It had Bart vs The Space Mutants on the front.

Those California Raisins figures from Hardees in the beginning. Oh man, I used to beg my parents to go there for dinner, so I could collect more. Such a wholesome time. Their cinnamon rolls were awesome.

I remember watching that Christmas special. The raisins were advertised heavily but didn’t actually show up until near the end but fortunately the rest of the special holds up too

Since I was a fan of Saturday morning cartoon like Super Mario Super Show, Earthworm Jim & Captain N and I didn't know California Raisins has their own Saturday morning cartoon
I think this game is missed potential. The biggest problem I have with this game is that The California Raisins actually have some lore and adventures attached to them that could've been used instead. In the comics, Tiny Goodbite was the leader of the group, and they had junk food-based villains, with Big Burger being the main one. Not all of the comics were good, but there was some effort put into them. Now the T.V. Specials were actually AMAZING, due to Will Vinton Studios' creating them. Meet The Raisins doesn't have any villains, but it does have a fun mocumentary story parodying the music industry. Raisins Sold Out did introduce a villain, Leonard Limabean, who is a slimy music producer who attempted to sabotage the raisins. There was also The California Raisins Show, although it's very hit or miss. Tons of different villains, with Boss Squash being a recurring one. And the Raisins from the specials/cartoon had more personality, so it would've made more sense if the game had you choose from one of them.

It was cancelled not just the decline of the popularity of California raisins, but it was Capcom not wanting to release the game due to the failure of Yo Noid, which was another claymation mascot that was a passing fad. Capcom felt that Disney games in the early 90s were more lucrative to sell!

Always interesting to see why some games were never released and then if copies of the game show up later on, see if the should have actually been released or not.
I used to have a nice California Raisin keychain back in the day.
I remember hearing about this game but still surprised that it was a thing due to it not being released.
Great episode. I first heard of this game on an episode of Jon Tron. Funny enough, the California Raisins" would appear again in the "animated masterpiece (mega sarcasm)" Foodfight.
Never knew about these characters but it is interesting that the animation style they use for them can also be seen in the Moonwalker Micheal Jackson movie.

Great review but I wanted to add to Chris bores did you know the young man that released this prototype game was a Capcom fan and collector but was also brutally deleted in real life soon after releasing this game so others can play it for free? His name was Brandon Murphy and he was only 22 years old

I am surprised that's the reason they gave to not release the game. There probably was some truth to that with combination to the fact like you said the game was not good. You could probably get away with releasing it with just one of those factors. With both, it's a recipe for disaster.

Great review for a mediocre/decent game. I also stumbled upon the prototype for the rom online and decided to try it out for myself. Everything you said about it is pretty spot-on, too. However, I WILL admit that the gameplay is at least kind of enjoyable, albeit rushed. Shame that they couldn't make a better ending. Ah well.
