    I remember PJ Proby's singular voice from when I was a mere teen, back in the Sixties. I remember his signature ponytail as if it were only yesterday. I just watched him sing "Somewhere" on YT, and I found myself just as mesmerized by his voice than I was then... maybe even more so. When I watched him sing, he looked so much like Elvis that I can't really know whether he was copying Elvis, or the other way around!! But he did this body gesture that reminded me so much of what Elvis eventually did in his Vegas act, somehow I think that maybe Elvis took more from PJ than we'll ever know. In any case, RIP Elvis, and rock on, PJ Proby, one of the true "greats."

    • @tonydesarsi7546

      Denise Jones The truth is PJ Proby tells untrue stories about entertainment stars like Elvis to make himself look more important. He said in an interview last week that he worked ALL OVER Texas with Elvis and thought he was just another country singer. In an interview last year he said the only time he ever saw Elvis perform live was at The Hitching Post (according to Proby, a small bar in Houston that held 50 people). PJ Proby would get more respect if he showed respect for his fellow artists and got his stories straight.

    Rock Legend P.J.Proby is an explosive character & a singer better than any other. He seems to attract many "weirdo's" who criticise him non stop! Good job that for every negative YT person there are 50 positive ones!!

    • @ktmyrs27
      @ktmyrs27 10 лет назад +1

      PJ Proby mimed Love Me Tender in the companion video to this one. If he's such a great singer why couldn't he sing it live? You're right about him being explosive though. He looks like he could explode with jealousy when he's asked questions about Elvis. Or maybe he's just scared he'll be asked which Elvis HITS he demoed. LOL

    • @rontenn
      @rontenn 10 лет назад +1

      Elvis is the greatest selling & most popular singer ever. P.J. knows this & has tremendous respect for The King. He's jealous of nobody! He & his fans know that if he was the same age as Elvis back in 1954 it could have been him that the Colonel turned into a world super-star. P.J. has never said he demoed hits for Elvis,he demoed film songs!!

    • @tonydesarsi7546
      @tonydesarsi7546 10 лет назад +3

      rontenn In recent years PJ Proby has been promoted as Elvis' demo man. At least 20 of the Elvis film songs were also hits but they weren't demoed by Proby. His claim of being the demo man for Elvis is just as empty as his claim of being a legend. Elvis is the legend.

    At the 2013 UK Americana Festival in July PJ Proby told an audience that Elvis and Priscilla were living together in Germany when she was 11 years old.
    Priscilla was born in May 1945. The year she was 11 Elvis, his parents and grandmother lived in a 1-story 4-bedroom house on Audubon Drive in Memphis. The same year showgirl Dotty Harmony spent Christmas there.
    Elvis first met Priscilla in Sept 1959 at a party in Bad Nauheim Germany.
    Telling dirty lies about another person is despicable.

    This story does not end or even help the debate as to whether P.J. & Elvis knew each other;

      steve FromEngland Would you believe I been there. I lived in Holland for 8yrs and we both know how England was always a power house and how Holland lost their way to the world cup through mistakes. I moved to So. Calif. at a young age, but got a small busn. jet through my dad and uncle company which I started for them. I flew back to Europe 20X, 7x times on my trips around the world. I always sit and talk with the locals and soccer was our number one subject and every country I was in always shows a fair for England every four years in the World cup coming up. Steve, it is hard for me to like the guy because he claims so many things including how well he knows Elvis and his story's are just bull. Remember the bass singer with Elvis. They were good friends and he was interviewed and he said that the stories PJ told are just a bunch of bull. These interviews were shown here on TV in America so I guess you never heard of them in England. Last thing, I would come into England by way of Iceland and I can't understand why you folks drive on the wrong side of the road. And you have so many circles on your roads. Have a nice day.

He never demoed any of Elvis' hits and his stories about working with Elvis in Houston in 1952 and 1953 are sheer fantasy! It's no wonder he looks nervous as a turkey at Christmas in this video.

      He said he "always thought he learned it off a colored man". Obviously, the way you spell "colored" you are from the UK. So maybe you're not aware of that "colored" was the acceptable term for blacks in the 50s and 60s. Even the organization NAACP uses it in their title (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). There is also something called UNCF, the United Negro College Fund. Are these organizations ledges also?

    Suspicious Minds is one of my least favorite Elvis songs. I'm not a fan of that country soul style he adopted in the 1970s, except in a few cases. "Elvis stole from the blacks"? Elvis took from the blues,country music,opera and various crooners/ balladeers ... Until Suspicious Minds sold 30 Million records It's Now or Never was his biggest record. Taken from the Italian Operatic Oh Solo Mio, should we say Elvis stole from the Italians?! 'Surrender' another one of his biggest hits was also an Italian song Torna a Surriento. Ballads like Are you Lonesome tonight and Love me tender were obviously influenced by Dean Martin( Dino Crocetti)

    • @dagodino

      Are you on drugs? Or just really jealous? Elvis was the greatest musical innovator the world will ever know!
      The biggest selling(by far) of all times! RCA estimates 1.5 Billion records sold! He was a gift from God! I saw
      him in person and in my 60 years on the planet have never seen another man as flawlessly good looking and
      as charismatic. As an example of stage innovation; when did anyone ever see Karate incorporated into a musical act?!
      Since he was a master singer and a master at Karate it was magnificent to see how well it worked!

    By 2002 even British audiences should have questioned PJ Proby's stories about working with Elvis. His job as a part-time demo singer for Ben Weisman has been exaggerated into being the demo man for the Elvis films. He's turned his younger sister (who actually dated Tommy Sands) into an older sister who dated Elvis. Just saying "I knew Elvis" seems to be all it takes to wow TV watchers in England.

      It's odd what people in the UK still believe about the U.S. and Elvis. PJ Proby's ridiculous stories about what he did and who he knew in Houston Texas in the early fifties continue to run in the British press as FACT. Brits must be in awe of anyone who ever cut a record.

      ***** I'm sure the majority of people in the UK moved on but P.J. Proby is still being interviewed on BBC radio stations as though he were an Elvis insider. A segment of British audiences laps up every word he says about doing demos for all the Elvis movies even though he can't prove it. He even toured in 2012 billed as Elvis' "demo man". And he continues to tell tales about performing in Texas bars with Elvis in the early 50's, long before Elvis had ventured beyond the outskirts of Memphis. Elvis is an industry, just like The Beatles - each started a new wave of music. P.J. Proby split his trousers.

    This guy sure makes some wild claims, he once said that his grandfather who was a prison warden took him into jail and strapped him into the electric chair when he was 5 years old.
    He generally demands a high fee for an interview, why anyone would want to interview a compulsive liar is beyond me.
    Nothing he says adds up, he was just a created pop star with an image.
    He's blurred the line between his image and his real self.
    Lots of actors do the same, they think they are their sterotype superhero onscreen character
