Great video. I was about to use 6Gb, but with the 323 BIOS I'm unable to set manual fan curves. The minimum fan speed we can set is too high and makes the Ally unnecessarily loud. There's no need to cool the APU down to 60C manually when in turbo mode it goes way beyond that. So for now I've rolled back to the 317 BIOS until they allow us to configure manual fan profiles properly.
I have found a trick to doing this I set it to the flattest curve they have them manually adjust from there. Ensuring not to touch anything before the last 2-3 plots on the graph that way when you hit 70-80 the force fan speed doesn't seem as bad. Play with the dots and find a nice config. The one I have now is quite good I think. I have the last two dots spaced out and the only ones manually set I believe.
@@WinDeckTechThanks, I'll go try that right now. I mistakenly thought that if I set the fan curves before the BIOS update, they would stay the same even after updating. But it seems to be adjusting everything automatically even though the graphs look unchanged from before the update.

@@WinDeckTech Thanks for the follow up. I tried moving the last 2-3 dots as far right as possible to flatten the curve like you said. Once it hits 60C the first fan ramps up to 6800 rpm and the second around 5000 rpm. I also tried dragging the 3 dots on the left to 35% to target 70C at 22W TDP (my preferred sweet spot even when plugged in) and even keeping the fan curve completely flat, but it's always the same result. It seems like no matter how I tweak the manual settings, as soon as it crosses 60C it overrides to max fans. And in turbo mode (around 50W for a few seconds), the noise level is the same no matter what I set the minimum to. Performance mode hits 70C and is super quiet, while Turbo goes between 80-90C. I think the area around the SD card runs a bit cooler. I will try sending ASUS an email about this issue. Because right now it doesn't really make sense to have manual control if it just defaults to max speed at 60C anyway.
6 is the perfect middle of the road setting. At least for most modern AAA games. Now if I can only get rid of those micro studders... Might have a strange lead but needs testing.
The micro stutters I find are very much dependent on the game and how it handles its caching. I don't think I've found a game yet that hasn't stuttered in one way or another. Even if only once. 6gb VRAM should help, but you need to remember to not set your expectations too high with graphical settings. 6gb of VRAM is good for medium at best texture quality settings in modern video games. 8gb used to be the standard for 1080p but now that has crept to the 12gb mark. The only option forward in that case is to include 32gb of ram, offer user upgradeable RAM or at the very least offer a 'pro' option for the Ally.
@WinDeckTech - I'm one of those 120 fps guys, so it's almost always 720 low with RSR for me. But you still see minute studders, even when my fps is well above 60. That's the kind of studders I want to eliminate. As for the RAM... Asus probably already got my money on a pro model... But I'm sure someone online will eventually do a RAM reball job with 32 gb. Let's hope that video comes out soon.
@@ezg8448 I think someone has already done a ram mod kit. I've seen a battery mod and overclocking as a result. Definitely won't be an everyday user thing haha.
Oh yeah they did. I have seen some videos already about performance gains in 15 w mode Looks like you either will receive a boost, or the same performance at minimum
2 runs rounded sorry, I got lazy. I think there was only one real outlier, which was in Elden ring. Which is understandable because It was just me trying to run to the same point, with a bit of combat at the end (beating up the trader at the fire)
It's the VRAM usage not the watts, it wouldn't make a difference battery life wise, but what it allows is for games to use more VRAM when the Uma buffer is set higher. If set too high (8gb) you can slow game performance if there's not enough system memory* Edit: typo
I would leave it at 6 as in some games you would notice a difference, depending on the scenario. You'll never fully know which games are heavily VRAM/GPU bound until you get into it. But for 1080p handheld, 6gb is a good sweet spot. Ideally 8 or more, but we take what we can get.
They just need to fix Auto imo. I use my XGM so having to switch to Auto to get the most system ram everytime gets old cause you have to do a restart as well.
Same here with the XG. It's super annoying... I would love the option for it to auto set to "auto" when plugging in. Doing a restart then coming back online with the GPU connected. It would take longer to do, but it would make it more seamless.
if we have 6gb of vram we have practically no more RAM left because there is Windows 11 which automatically takes 4gb of ram on the GPU plus 6gb of vram so theoretically we have more than 6gb of RAM left in putting 6gb of vram, are you sure that 6gb of vram and better than 4?
Someone needs to do new testing. In my case it seems that with the new drivers spiderman (as an example) is running worse than before with 6Gb when unplugged. The only option to get normal performance is to set it to Auto but then I have to lower the settings because if not it will crash after some time. I don't know what the new drivers did but I'm getting better and more stable performance on my steam deck with Spider-Man than with the Ally unplugged.
@@WinDeckTech the only problem with Vram on Auto is in that, besides crashing while using very high presets and probably 1080p (didn't try 1080 because I allways play 720p) sometimes it lags during gameplay for like 1 second compiling shaders (happens once or twice max on a game session) . But after that 1second lag everything is much smoother in general than with 4,5 or 6Gb. I didn't have this impression before the new amd update. I allways thought 6Gb performed perfectly. But some days ago I picked the steam deck to play some spiderman and noticed much better framerate than the ally unplugged. Even using higher Wattage. That made me very confused since on earlier testing the ally just demolished the steam deck. Then I found out that Vram on Auto brought back the performance I remembered on the ally.
@@TonyCassara I would not use 6gb for yuzu emulation. Check out my recent Mario Odyssey video on the ally. I have some perf charts testing auto, 4gb, 6gb

Well obviously you can access it via smokeless. I meant through the restricted Asus bios. I do dabble with smokeless on the SD and ally, as well as other restricted bios computers. This is just one step closer to ASUS letting people do what they want with their devices.
Quick question, why does Forza horizon 5 tap out on 8GB of VRAM But dead Space remake doesn’t.. both are set to get best graphics possible with a frame rate around 50-60 FPS?
Dumb question but the turbo functions is that something I have to activate? Doesn’t seem to work. It’s supposed to be like if I press for example A to jump now instead of pressing it multiple times I can just hold A and it will keep on jumping. Or did I misunderstand this? And btw. Do u know about the throttle monitor update for AC? I did the update, but it hasn’t changed anything. Same yesterday I got a myasus g something sensor update.
No such thing as a dumb question. To be honest I haven't played with the turbo function yet, however I think it's something you have to enable in the game profile . As well for the thermal monitor and Bosch update I haven't really noticed anything new or different in that regard. Perhaps gearing up for official motion support.
It's all good buddy, I didn't take anything by it, I'm sure the other darkstar didn't either haha. However, I think the both of you need to duel for the name now.
Hello, I'm new to the ROG Ally. I updated all the drivers and everything, but when I load into Red Dead Redemption, it says "failed to select GPU." Any idea what it could be?
Interesting Darkstar301 has been my name ever since the PlayStation 3 came out and it on every system and pc ever since then to bad they couldn’t come up with their own but its ok I guess
I dont always play high end games and sorry if this sounds as a dumb question but would setting it to 6gb increase the battery drain ? like at times I play hades which doesn't need too much out of anything at all, while sometimes I play nier replicant which is struggling rn so would 6gb vram be a nice one-stop shop with balanced battery drain?, I also use auto tdp with handheld companion in case that helps
No dumb questions at all. This should not have any sort of noticeable impact in your battery life. If at all. What it is doing is just assigning more memory to be dedicated to the GPU as opposed to the System. If the game or application doesn't call for 6gb to be used, it will not use it. Sometimes games will eat up more vram and hold it as dynamic, it is not in use persey, but ready to be used. Edit: auto tdp would be saving you the most battery life
@@WinDeckTech I see So by using auto TDP do I gain the functionality of it automatically assigning 6gb to vram or that's something it can't access and must be done manually...?
Anyone have the Jsaux usb c 6 in 1 multifunction adapter as a dock? Says it accommodates 100w but still not getting 30w turbo. I’m using the ROG Ally cable as the power input to the dock.

To think that if Asus just spent a measly $50 more on 16gb of more RAM, our end-user experience would have been drastically different. But no, Asus decided to cheap out, and now we're sitting here having to micromanage, as a guy down on his luck would have to budget down to his very last dollar every month 😂 Anyway, as always, appreciate all the benchmarks!
Yeah but if they did that then the price would go up 100-120 and they wouldn't be within spitting distance of the top end steam deck. I'm thinking their long play is to establish a foothold in the handheld market. Then try to become one of the bigger go-to players. Like a Sony or Microsoft. If they were smart, they would not release them yearly (brand new devices) but offer refresh or pro models. More ram, better screen (OLED would be the only route for that I think), higher storage. Perhaps if they could come up with a bespoke rumble function like the ps5 controller. Hall sensors etc. Perhaps the chip could be overclocked to allow for 35w sustained with a better cooling solution. There are so many possibilities for improvement on the base Ally. But not enough over a year's time to bring out an "Ally 2" I think that would entice people to sell their ally and upgrade to the pro model. If it was 100-200 more than the base model, people could recoup probably 75% of what they paid for the device and feel happy about "discounting" their purchase of a new ally. The true die-hards will likely stick to gpd, aokezoe, ayn etc.
@@WinDeckTech "More ram, better screen (OLED would be the only route for that I think), higher storage." That would be lovely. To be honest, even just more RAM would be enough for me. Anything more would be extra icing on the cake. "The true die-hards will likely stick to gpd, aokezoe, ayn etc." I was actually very close to go with one of those, and the *only* reason I decided on the Ally was because of the Freesync screen. Now I'm wondering when they might roll out the 'new & improved' refresh. They wouldn't use the traditional console cycle, would they?
@@corndog9482 I just backed for the gpd win max 2. Mainly as a laptop/desktop replacement and for use in school. I will definitely miss the 120hz screen, I'm not selling my Ally, definitely keeping it as it's definitely going to be way more ergonomic than the max 2 could ever dream to be. However I opted for 64gb of ram (way overkill I know, however for video editing etc it's a must I've found) mainly because it's non upgradeable. I'm definitely digging this mobile/handheld lifestyle and can see it becoming an even bigger/mainstream thing in the coming years. Manufacturers just need to listen to the community and provide meaningful support. Windows as well needs to come along but that's a different story. I hope Asus doesn't release yearly models as I feel that will then just become too much for them to manage and given the state of the xg mobile drivers, I don't think they can handle any more work than they already have.
If they were really smart they would have made it modular so that we could upgrade it like a better battery, Hall effect joystick module, ram, wireless, and so on.
@@kevinlopota3626 I agree, but I would never expect a company like Asus to go to that length for us to profit in such a way. At the core, if they could get away with it, I feel Asus is one of those companies who would implement design choices which incorporate the shady practice of "planned obsolescence", again, _if_ they knew they could get away with it, and to a degree I feel they kinda have already with this Ally, hence the decision to go with the soldered 16gb of RAM and 2230 nvme, which caps out at a paltry 2tb. But that could just be the conspiracy theorist side of me talking 😂
I'd say it's more worthwhile to have 6gb tbh. The difference between 4 and 5 just isn't that great for modern games. Ideally you'd want to have at least 8gb for 1080p modern gaming if not more. However you would then starve the system of system memory
Which do you have your VRAM set to. If it is in auto change it to 5gb or 6gb. Depending on the game, it "may" benefit from being set to 8gb but likely not the case.
I have mine turned on, I only ever turn cpu boost off when I limit my FPS, otherwise in my testing it produced minimal difference in an unlocked fps scenario being on or off. Edit: let me know how it goes!! I have the XG Mobile so I leave mine in Auto when I'm not testing.

6gb is my go to. My favorite to play is currently Monster Hunter World and it requires a bit over 4gb.
Love that game! Wish they had the user friendly co op from rise in world.
I'd go for a remaster in the RE engine as the next installment.
@@WinDeckTechbruh remastering a 5 year old game is silly lol
Great video. 6GB looks good. Can You test 15W Mode? Some says that Asus improve it significant.
Oh yeah they did. I have seen some videos already about performance gains in 15 w mode
Looks like you either will receive a boost, or the same performance at minimum
I play mostly indie games, old AAA games or switch emulation
Do you think i should set it to 6gigs aswell?
Thanks
I thought raid I wouldn't bother unless you were cranking up the resolution beyond 1080p it probably won't make a difference. Same with older AAA
Thank you for the benchmarks! Are all these benchmark like 3 run averages or are these just one run?
2 runs rounded sorry, I got lazy.
I think there was only one real outlier, which was in Elden ring. Which is understandable because It was just me trying to run to the same point, with a bit of combat at the end (beating up the trader at the fire)
@@WinDeckTech that's okay. 2 is still a lot better then 1.
I won't update from 317 until they fix the INSANELY loud fan curve for custom profiles... A MINIMUM of 80% fan speed at 60c???? no way.
Helps if you're slightly deaf! Just give yourself permanent hearing damage and you'll be happy 😅
Hi, just a noob question. Why does most people recommends 6W instead of 8W? Is it because 8W is more power hungry? Thanks!
It's the VRAM usage not the watts, it wouldn't make a difference battery life wise, but what it allows is for games to use more VRAM when the Uma buffer is set higher.
If set too high (8gb) you can slow game performance if there's not enough system memory*
Edit: typo
I put at 6go me frankly I do not see the difference with 4go.
what do you think I leave at 6go?
@@WinDeckTech yeah I was thinking about that option too. I would take and be ok with it.
if we have 6gb of vram we have practically no more RAM left because there is Windows 11 which automatically takes 4gb of ram on the GPU plus 6gb of vram so theoretically we have more than 6gb of RAM left in putting 6gb of vram, are you sure that 6gb of vram and better than 4?
Someone needs to do new testing. In my case it seems that with the new drivers spiderman (as an example) is running worse than before with 6Gb when unplugged. The only option to get normal performance is to set it to Auto but then I have to lower the settings because if not it will crash after some time. I don't know what the new drivers did but I'm getting better and more stable performance on my steam deck with Spider-Man than with the Ally unplugged.
I've noticed similar things with yuzu as well. I thought it was due to emulation woes but if you're noticing it in other games as well.
Thanks 🙏🏾
Thank you :)
Have you noticed any performance increases for ToTk with any of these recent bios updates?
I haven't tested it fully in depth. However, that will be out this week, likely in the next day or two
@@WinDeckTech gotcha, appreciate it!
Do you think you’d need to update the game system properties to be 6GB as well in yuzu?
@@TonyCassara I would not use 6gb for yuzu emulation. Check out my recent Mario Odyssey video on the ally. I have some perf charts testing auto, 4gb, 6gb
@@WinDeckTech Thank you! My initial findings I had better results with 4GB than 6GB, I'll check your video to see what you found. Great channel you've got a new sub from me!
What I think is funny is that the ram options were always a thing but people act they are new .
The new options that were added were 5-7
@@WinDeckTech they were always there using smokeless bios which means asus always intended for it which I found kinda funny they didn’t just do it.
You should only push it to 6gb for Forza 5
Anything over you can receive errors about low system memory.
At medium settings you should be good
Dumb question but the turbo functions is that something I have to activate?
Can you post your setting for MW2?
I just used the balanced preset with FSR Q :)
when amd control panel and dgvoodoo2 gonna be fixed?
Sorry for about that it caught me off guard actually mean I really did like your Contant. I might be watching you more.
It's all good buddy, I didn't take anything by it, I'm sure the other darkstar didn't either haha.
However, I think the both of you need to duel for the name now.

Posso usar 8g ?
Posso ter algum problema usando 8g?
Hello, I'm new to the ROG Ally. I updated all the drivers and everything, but when I load into Red Dead Redemption, it says "failed to select GPU." Any idea what it could be?
Found any Solution?
Interesting Darkstar301 has been my name ever since the PlayStation 3 came out and it on every system and pc ever since then to bad they couldn’t come up with their own but its ok I guess
I dont always play high end games and sorry if this sounds as a dumb question but would setting it to 6gb increase the battery drain ?
like at times I play hades which doesn't need too much out of anything at all, while sometimes I play nier replicant which is struggling rn
so would 6gb vram be a nice one-stop shop with balanced battery drain?, I also use auto tdp with handheld companion in case that helps
Edit: auto tdp would be saving you the most battery life
@@WinDeckTech I see
So by using auto TDP do I gain the functionality of it automatically assigning 6gb to vram or that's something it can't access and must be done manually...?
@@ash-xb8yq oh no auto tdp has nothing to do with the VRAM. You'll still need to set this through the bios or operating mode in armoury crate
I actually had a smoother experience w auto or 4gb w Diablo 4
Same. Some reason D4 crashed on 6gb for me
At which resolution?
@@WinDeckTech 1080, 6 gave me sound stuttering as well

This is interesting as at 6Gb Diablo 4 is running fine for me at 1080p. When I use 4Gb it stutters
hello, I hesitate between 5 or 6go of vram, which choice to advise you ??? THANKS
I would do 6gb!
@@WinDeckTechok
hi, I don't understand, in games like mw2/warzone how much vram should I select?
Depends on your settings. If you play at higher resolutions and higher game settings. 6gb VRAM should net you a smoother experience
Is this Video Stil up to date ?
Yes 5-6gb of vram is still your best bet for most situations
Anyone have the Jsaux usb c 6 in 1 multifunction adapter as a dock? Says it accommodates 100w but still not getting 30w turbo. I’m using the ROG Ally cable as the power input to the dock.
I don't have any jsaux docks unfortunately however I am noticing sometimes it will kick in sometimes it won't. Try unplugging everything from the dock

But not enough over a year's time to bring out an "Ally 2"
I think that would entice people to sell their ally and upgrade to the pro model.
If it was 100-200 more than the base model, people could recoup probably 75% of what they paid for the device and feel happy about "discounting" their purchase of a new ally.
The true die-hards will likely stick to gpd, aokezoe, ayn etc.
@@WinDeckTech "More ram, better screen (OLED would be the only route for that I think), higher storage."
That would be lovely. To be honest, even just more RAM would be enough for me. Anything more would be extra icing on the cake.
"The true die-hards will likely stick to gpd, aokezoe, ayn etc."
I was actually very close to go with one of those, and the *only* reason I decided on the Ally was because of the Freesync screen.
But that could just be the conspiracy theorist side of me talking 😂
what do you think of 5gb of vram???
I'd say it's more worthwhile to have 6gb tbh. The difference between 4 and 5 just isn't that great for modern games. Ideally you'd want to have at least 8gb for 1080p modern gaming if not more. However you would then starve the system of system memory
rog ally can oc "Agpu"?fps will higher?
Yeah you can OC it
My ally is stuttering in most games, what should i do?
Which do you have your VRAM set to. If it is in auto change it to 5gb or 6gb.
Depending on the game, it "may" benefit from being set to 8gb but likely not the case.
@@WinDeckTechi had it in auto , now with 6gb miles is fine
Miles is taking 5.7 of vram so it makes sense, still dont know why auto is not working good, should be the best option for everything
