- If you're a fan of the original 3 Star Wars movies, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and the Return of the Jedi then you need to check out this 40th Anniversary Arcade1Up Star Wars Cabinet! This is the perfect cabinet for fans of all ages, and it's sure to make any scruffy looking nerf herder happy. Come along as The Force Was With Us as we recently scored an Arcade1Up Star Wars Arcade Cabinet to Review.
Whether you call it Arcade 1up, 1Up Arcade, Arcade1Up, or any variation, they have been creating cool arcades for some time. Rumors have been swirling around for years that the Star Wars arcade would be making a return. Arcade 1Up likes to release cabinets, discontinue them, make some improvements, and re-release them. They've done that multiple times with Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and other cabinets. Well, Star Wars has now gotten the same treatment! In late January 2023 Arcade one up announced that the Star Wars Arcade cabinet would be making a return, and it's bringing along some new features.
Only 3500 units are being re-released, with 308 available directly through Arcade 1Up. Well, those sold out right away but will ship before the end of January 2023. The other units will be sold through their partner website ShopHippo.com. I did not get my order in in-time for one of the first 308 but I did get one ordered from ShopHippo.
The assembly of the Star Wars Arcade 1Up arcade cabinet took me a little more than 2 hours. It would have been a bit faster but I decided to install the GRS Flight Simulator Yoke, which they so graciously suppled for us to check out. To install it, you need to remove the standard Arcade 1Up yoke by undoing several screws and bolts, along with disconnecting the wiring. A second set of hands can be beneficial as you install the yoke on the flight control board, but all in all it is pretty easy to install the GRS Flight Yoke, as is the rest of the cabinet.
Upon firing up the cabinet the marquee lit up, the Arcade 1Up poped on-screen, and then there the 3 game menu was. I loved seeing it, I loved hearing it, and I couldn't wait to play. I hovered over each of the titles and heard R2's whistle as I went from each menu item to each menu item. I lauched into the Original Star Wars game, and was instantly taken back to Butler Skateland in Butler, WI and my 8 year old self as I the familiar menu and title screens greeted me yet again. I heard Luke, Obi-Wan, and R2 all as I played, shooting down Tie Fighters and the shots coming towards my X-Wing, and it was great! The GRS Flight Yoke was also simply amazing, the pivoting of the yoke and the button presses were amazingly precise and truly made the experience wonderful.
Next up was The Empire Strikes Back which I had nerver played before. This was awesome as it followed the same basic layout of the first game with a Hoth Level fighting Probe Droids, then attacking AT-ATs and AT-STs, and finally in space fighting Tie's and avoiding astroids. This was super fun and something I had not played before, and did make use of the top buttons on the flight yoke to shoot the Harpoon and Tow Cable out.
Finally, Return of the Jedi is a game, it's not a good game, and that's because of the isometric screen. I did play it some, it is a better graphical game than the originals but no-where near as fun.
Why it RoX:
- Brings the Arcade Experience Home
- Same Feel and Experience as the Original
- Beautiful Artwork
- Lit Marquee and Coin Doors
What Could Be Improved
- $100 more than original price
- Instructions are a bit off with peeling the screen protector off
- A bit of distortion at time in the audio
- Stock yoke is janky
- A bit on the short side
- Riser vs all-in-one side plates
- Only 3 games
Should you buy one?
At $100 more than original, this is a bit of a tougher pill to swollow, but it is still an amazing machine I absolutely love. Return of the Jedi is the weak link here, but Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back are both amazing and I love them so much. The stock flight yoke leaves a lot to be desired, but the GRS Flight Toke from Glen's Retro Show solves all of the stock unit's shortcomings. I legit cannot suggest it highly enough. If you loved the original arcade machine this is a must have. I am glad it is in my collection now, and have loved every minute I have played it. The Force Was With Us when we were able to get one, and now that we have an Arcade 1Up Star Wars Arcade cabinet, the circle is complete!

I got one 2 weeks ago here in England at £699 (over $800) and been loving it and reliving my teenage years. Enjoy
That's fun! Yes, I don't like the price hike but it's still an amazing cabinet.
You lucky devil. My favourite all time game. Would love one so I can finally never run out of 10p's!
Enjoy my friend!
@@TheMrRatzz Cheers. It is a lovely cabinet and really enjoy playing on it
Where did you get it from mate? Game?
Tempted to buy one, but worried that the nostalgia fix will disappear after a couple of weeks. To anyone that bought one, do you still play with it months later? Or has it become a dust collector?
I played this game today in a games arcade in the UK. It was the old sit in booth version. Vector graphics, old school, still love it. Im 50 now, where have all the years gone?
Agreed, when did we become the old people?
@@RoXolid Like my coins in the slot, the years have vanished. 😂
my favorite star wares arcade is the pod racer one. you would sit on a bike and control the game that way.
I remember and have played that one
Oh man, I remember playing both the free-standing and cockpit versions of Star Wars. Perhaps it was the other machines playing in a space all at once, but the sound in that cockpit you could feel in your chest! Nice trip!
I can buy one for £699 in the UK. I reckon I spent £1000 in pound coins back in the mid / late 80s
If you were in the Vegas area, I'd sell you mine for $500 USD.
I also own this 1up game, I think you’re underestimating the Return of the Jedi game. I loved all of them back in the day. I own this and Mortal Kombat, I want the Marvel Super Heroes game but my wife said she’d divorce me if I bought another game, do I risk it…….🤔
I don't like the angle of it, but then again I don't care for most isometric games.
Only risk it if getting divorced means you can also become a RUclips Channel member. If not, then don't risk it (but you cna still become a channel member :D )
I don't think I'll ever get an A1Up, but I sure love the concept. I LOVED the Atari Star Wars arcade when I was a kid. It was one of my most-played games at Chuck E Cheese, alongside TMNT and Turtles in Time.
THAT is the big thing about the original, look at the games you compared it to. TMNT Came out in what... '89 I think? 6 years is a LOOOOONG time in the gaming world and TMNT Looked and played better. But there was something about the simplicity of the Star Wars Arcade Cabinet that was just so good.
@@RoXolid Absolutely. I didn't understand the technical difference between vector and normal graphics back then. I just thought it was amazing that the game looked so good and accurate, despite being made of wireframe shapes.
Glen's controllers are amazing quality, literally all the hardcore A1up collectors will swap the stock parts out for his.
I did play this a fair bit in arcades as a kid, but I must confess my fave Star Wars Arcade game was the first one Sega released (the one that was later released on 32X) I hope Arcade1up consider a "sequel" machine someday!
They are quite terrific. I am thankful they sent one for me to evaluate, it's a remarkable piece and I hope most who get this latest batch of machines also upgrade to his flight yoke.
Got mine back in 2019. Love it.
just saw you on the RUclips meeting. I was thinking of buying this game or at least a few other Arcade1Up cabinets. - subbed :)
Yeah Mike, good to see you and thanks! This is by far my favorite out of my 3 Arcade 1Ups I have.
I LOVE the Return of the Jedi one.
0:04 This sound 🤣 Great review by the way, thanks !
Gotta love Rogue Squadron! Thanks for watching
You’re crazy, RotJ is awesome!
Love the movie, not a huge fan of the game
My favourite on the cab.
I to love the opening of episode 3.
The Battle of Coruscant is an amazing opening.
Spock was always my favorite character in Space Trek
Billy Mummy was really good too. I remember when he came to Earth in that egg, and burst out saying "the Flux Capacitor!". So many great Space Trek.
You should have watched when Spork, Spock's brother took over the Millennium Falcon. He had the best jokes
The original Star Wars game remains to be the best arcade game ever. Missed a few exams at the med school in the 80’s 🙄
Does this version give you extra points if you go through the tunnels on the Death Star using the force i.e. not shooting until the final silo? I recall getting up to level 13 or so using the force.
Yes, it 100% does. I learned a while ago that if you start at Wave 5 and “Use the Force,” you’ll score a million points for completing one level. Great way to get your name on the board!
I’ve played the original a couple times a year for the past 20 years, so I have recently memory to compare the 1Up to, and it is very, very good! The emulation is so accurate that when there’s too many objects on the screen, the frame rate slows down exactly like the original (which is not at all a complaint! If they smoothed it out, it would not feel authentic and it would probably mess up my game!).
I agree with others that the stock yoke is more than adequate for most folks. I play mine regularly, but not frequently. If you play frequently, the upgraded yoke is probably worth the investment (not sure how much it is though. He said the link is in the description, but I don’t see it).
This is very cool! Glad you were able to get the GRS yoke. I'm waiting on the makerofthings bezel mod for my first gen Star Wars cabinet. Thanks for the review.
Very cool! And it's sooooo good!
Voiced by Mark Hamill, Alec Guinness, Peter Mayhew, Dennis Lawson, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, budgie birds, Anthony Daniels, and Carrie Fisher
Yeah... And?
I got the classic starwars arcade 1up few days ago
Fantastic 😍 happy you are enjoying the GRS flight yoke and that star wars cab one of the best
Seriously, I cannot heap enough praise on you, your development, and the end product. I would argue this is even a better option than the OEM Atari Yoke from '83. Amazing job, cannot recommend highly enough for anyone with a Star Wars Arcade Cabinet.
:) that's all we want .. happy Game Players 😀
Fun to see your enthusiasm. I played a ton of these games as unlockables on the Rebel Strike disc. Which is - hot take warning - the best disc for GameCube.
I have it as well!
I would really love to get this arcade for Christmas i love Star Wars
Return of the Jedi was the bomb back in the day played the 💩 of it! Was the best of the three no doubt!
Not to me but I'm glad you enjoyed it
Just got mine in the mail yesterday it’s gonna look good next to my marvel vs Capcom 2 cabinet
Hey I still have that Street Fighter 2, and I love my Ridge Racer arcade1ups.
Now if they took that same cabinet setup with the yolk controls and make a RoadBlasters cabinet with Spy Hunter, Road Riot 4WD, and Stun Runner
That would be an insta buy.
Oh if you wanna do a Ridge Racer review, come by and try it out at Casa De Maynard!
If possible, I’d like to get ahold of this cabinet. But have a pedal added on the bottom, along with the arcade games FireFox, Road Blasters, Stun Runner, and Hydra. All Atari arcade games that used the dual axis yoke controller, or at least compatible with its use such as Road Blasters.
Empire Skate in Redlands has this game back in the 80’s. Many coins were spent on this one
That's awesome
Great video
Thank you
Let's hear more about your skating skills--did you do roller disco?
Hearing a lot of praise and for something so nostalgic to so many, and something so unique that I could see a lot of collectors wanting, that's precisely what I would've hoped for in this build. Nice!
No, I am too young for disco, thankfully. But I know that Billie Jean was not his lover... On the Rollercoaster of Love... I was addicted to the Hokey Pokey at one point but I turned myself around....
To this day I still can't skate backwards though, one thing I couldn't master.
Warts and all this is a fun piece. The GRS Flight Yoke takes it to the next level too!
god you can be their spokes dude lol makes me wanna go get one lol just leave the 800 tele at the bottom lol
Hey, I loved this cabinet, what can I say?
@@RoXolid now i want one lol could have sold it to me like a used car sales men on the vid lol yelling with a 800 number lol go see cal go see cal go see cal lol
Seems like it would’ve been a good candidate for paperboy since that’s closer to bicycle handlebars than joysticks
I wish they had the Sega Star Wars arcade games.
Same
Do not believe sega has released any of their titles to arcade 1up. Nor has Nintendo or taito.
I have mine still in the box. Got it a few days before Xmas and never got a chance to put it together. It will be my 21 arcade 1 up (not buying many more)
21? Holy crap! You need to open up your own arcade!
I am 190.5 cm (6 feet 3 inches) tall and the cabinet, even with the riser, is too short for me. I have to bend my knees slightly or use a tall stool to be able to play the game. That is the main reason I rarely play Empire or Jedi. The yoke is uncomfortable and I can only play for a few minutes (one or two times through the games) before I have to stop due to wrist pain. I do not have that issue with the first Star Wars game.
I get that. Have you thought about another riser?
@@RoXolid I would have to make my own. A second Arcade1Up would make it Way too tall. lol
Use furniture risers, put them on a couple of my cabinets, you can get 2-3 inches and are only about 20-30$ and look great
@@kevinpalardy8592 Danke. I appreciate the idea.
@danilanglois6785 i also added an led strip inside the base, so with the added furniture risers, the cabinet looks like it's glowing, ill do that as well when I get the star wars cab adding a blue glow to it
If you are in the Vegas area, I have an almost brand new SW A1U cab for sale. I bought it new and it has less than 4 hours play on it.
I'm not, sorry
@@RoXolid Thanks. I guess I could have worded that better. I meant it for the viewers at large. I'm trying to make room for a Dragon's Lair cab...grin...
@@danidavis7912 I'd appreciate not selling on my channel please
@@RoXolid No worries. I won't darken the door here again. Cheers.
New Vegas?! 🤯
Oh my I remember Butler skateland, still go to skate land in Waukesha.
I have been to that one too, behind the Ford dealership by Famous Dave's. I think there's a Rosen right by there too
@@RoXolid Yep, tons of dealerships around there. I hope you've been to Garcade in Menomonee Falls?
@@Treeplanter73 Not yet, I'm from the Falls actual. I talked to them at MGC this year, they're where the old North Hills Athletic club was on Appleton
@RoXolid Then in Muckwonago, there's the Vintage Vault arcade. Half the size of Garcade, but has different games, some rare. But also fun. But Garcade is a blast.
@shawndickmann8215 I also used to live on mukwonago. I need to get back up to the elegant Farmer sometime because that is the One place that I have found that makes zucchini bread even remotely close to the way my mom used to make it before she passed away.
AT Games also lets you use the trackball.
i played all 3 of them lol the jedi one hung out at the local movie house when i was a kid lol
I have the original Atari stand up arcade game. I've had it since the late eighties but now the graphics will only show a blue dot in the middle of the screen while all the sound still works. Everyone has told me it will be too expensive to fix but I can't seem to get rid of it.
Episode "3"? What is that?
The 3rd best Star Wars movie behind RotJ & ESB
Theres a bug in star wars - at the end it says 'remember the force be with you' - then it says it again 'the force be with you' - it shouldn't as the arcade version / mame version doesn't say it twice!
I don't 100% remember if it was $499 or $599
can the replacement Yoke be plugged into a regular PC and used with MAME emulators or whatever? I don't have the space for a whole cabinet and I also don't think I would play it enough to warrant buying the whole cabinet either.
I think the cabinets would be cool if they had modular controller boards: IE have this flight yoke board but be able to swap it out for regular fight sticks without requiring massive disassembly
Yes it can
Did you just swap P&P the GRS Yoke or was it neccessary to change the movement parameters / sensitivy?
No changes besides unpluggiing and plugging back ing
3:34 ooouu shhparklesshh🤓✨🧸
Uh, ok
Does it save your scores if you turn off the power ? Looking into buying one of these soon 😊
Yes
I'm interested in getting this for the same reason you did. I have their star wars virtual pinball machine and the voice acting is just awful. are dialogue lines in this directly from the movie or are they voice actors doing impressions? unless it's actually the sound from the original game, i dont think i want it
They are digitized samples right from the film. Very impressive for the era.
@@sethwiseman1017 oh rad! that's what i loved
Im about to pick up this cab this week, how is the original flight yoke? Will i be disappointed with it or is changing it a must
The stock one is ok but the upgrade one is SO MUCH BETTER!
how much does it cost?
The stock is great. Don't even think about spending more money.
Ok I liked the last 3
Episodes 7, 8, and 9? No thanks.
I just subscribed
Thank you so much!
the graphics of EMpire and return didn't look as good as I remember.
Nostalgia is a powerful drug!
The stock yoke is perfectly fine peeps.
It's ok, but the GRS one is smoother and the buttons have a much better feel. I'd say the GRS one feels closer to the arcade original than the stock one.
@@RoXolid I'm sure it does. All I'm saying is, that you don't have to rush out and buy another one, because the stock yoke is perfectly fine.
U need a riser
It comes with one
@@RoXolid no kidding, i thought it was optional....u looked like it was too low for u
You couldn’t resist huh?
I could, but I really didn't want to, lol
@@RoXolid Poor Gary. I'm sure that your family really twisted that arm of yours :)
@@amolochitis30 True story, my wife insisted that I ordered it. I want going to but she told me to and even chipped in 1/2 out of her personal fun money!
why are you touching all over the screen dude.
Didn't realize I did
