@@Mic-Mak The nature of prophecy is unfortunately not understanding it until it's come to pass. It's a common theme across mythology and literature with prophecy. One of the best parts of early GoT is the slow burn on the white walker story line. We’re nearly 5 full seasons down before a main character meets the “villain” of the story, and half of the emotional impact is because they’ve been giving us a small taste of the white walkers throughout the show, and now we finally get our first feast.
The closing shot of the episode is taken at the same angle as the first scene where Jon is sailing into the Hardhome harbor. Only difference is most of those people are dead at the end.
Ooh, that’s a nice detail that I never noticed. That subconsciously sets up the stark contrast in the shots in a way that makes the final one hit harder than it would otherwise

I Can’t tell you how happy I am to see that you all appreciate Sansa’s character and what she’s been through. So many people just hate on her and it’s so ridiculous. She hasn’t had many options at this point in the story. The best she could do was bite her tongue and try to stay safe. She’s endured so much and the amount of strength that takes is immense. She’s honestly one of my favorite characters.
The dynamic between Dany and Tyrion here, the talk they have about their fathers, the two families' intertwined past, the ruling elite and breaking the wheel, all of it is very engaging. The intensity between Sansa and Reek as they lock eyes and finally, after so many false hopes, you see a little bit of Theon come out. A little bit of light in all the blackness. The walkers appearing on top of that foggy hill like the four horsemen of apocalpyse >>>
When Jon holds Longclaw in the air and yells "Night's Watch With Me!" as the handful of Brothers in Black run to the opposite direction of the retreating sea of Wildling gray; the freeze frame moment leading up to the Valyrian Steel revelation; and the ending with the Night King slowly walking through the creaking plank. Those are the three shots I live for. The cinematography is impeccable. It's emotive and ominous. This one's up there with the top episodes.
@@stevem2323 Just my personal opinion, but I'm fine with Jon doing what he did & ending up where he ended up instead becoming what many fans wanted him to become (keeping it vague on purpose so as to not spoil). I think his end point has a very Greek tragedy element to it. But how they got to that point is what could've been done better. Just my personal opinion.

Hardhome is a fantastic episode. It's the episode that showed everyone how unimportant everything south of the wall is and what Westeros will be up against and it was a terrifying moment when I first watched it. I just LOVED both your reactions when Longclaw stood up against the white walker's blade and when Jon killed him. That's exactly the reason we love watching you guys react to this. Things are really going down now!
Hardhome, a Miguel Sapochnik directed episode. He was the co-showrunner for season 1 of House of the Dragon. He also directed episodes 1, 6 and 7 of season 1 of HotD.
Hardhome is one of my favorite episodes of the series for the ambience alone. That dark and desolate snowy panorama throughout the evacuation always gives me slow anxiety. The environment feels very "Othery", pun intended. This is a continuation of the darkness of the recent episodes. As I said last time, Winterfell and beyond the wall just feels like a dystopian fairy tale inverted on its head right now, mesmerizing in its eerie silence. It's all so despairing
Ive never seen Spartan smile so much then when he saw Jon Snow in that Freefolk meeting!🤣🤣 Even Sersi's final demise that he had been begging for had a lackluster reaction😂
The best thing about this episode is that the show trains you for 5 Seasons that Episode 9 is the big one and then they just drop this awesome shit in the last half of Episode 8 where you would never expect it
With regards to the fight scene between Jon and the White Walker general, it was a shock to the viewer at the time when the ice spear bounced off the Valyrian steel sword, as nobody knew that it had such powers. The secrets surrounding the material died long ago in the doom of Valyria, so nobody alive knew that it was even possible to be able to do that. However, if you think about it logically, the clue is in the name; VALYRIAN. Whilst it's never confirmed, its believed that Valyrian steel was crafted in such a way that it was imbued with magic and was forged using dragonfire, so much so that it is now impossible to recreate. This is why Valyrian steel in general is so valuable and almost held in awe when people come across it. This would answer why it is so effective against the White Walkers and the army of the dead, it is quite literally the opposite of them. Fire overcomes Ice.
This episode was critically acclaimed and I absolutely love it because I love the apocalyptic undertone of the battle, Sapochnick's direction is very different from the previous battles. Episodes like Hardhome is why it's worth reminding this season won an unparalleled total of 12 Emmys (Breaking Bad won 16 total in context) and was reaching peak viewership. It's why I love 5 despite the next two episodes that many seem to have a huge problem with. "Wicked Games" is the perfect theme for this season. No season with an episode like Hardhome in it should be considered a net negative in any logical way, even though they deviated from super important things like Ramsay and Jeyne Poole lol.
I remember that one of the reasons I liked the 5th season less was mainly because I didn't like the new villains, the Faith Militans and the Sons of the Harpies. They bored me quite a bit. But something like Hardhome was definitely the highlight.
Yeah, they arent really specific characters but more like just an army that serves as an annoyance. With sons of the harpy we never even have a specific leader to focus on and we know that dany could easily kill them all with her dragons. And the Sparrows are just religious fanatics who have boring ass scenes, the conversations between high sparrow and some entertaining character are good. But any scene where the main characters are imprisoned and have to listen to accusations over and over again is just annoyinf
I felt like you could tell they had lost the direction of the books in the season. There is still very good stuff, but Barristen dying out of no where, and shireen contradicting the books just feels bad, and really felt like the precursors to what is to come in the future.
@@BhBc8f8 you cant really look at it like heroes and villains in game if thrones. Most if not all of the characters are gray. If a certain arc is from cersei's perspective then she would be the protagonist of it, and HS the antagonist, but neither are the hero or villain

I wish people weren't so eager to set up expectations for you guys all the time, regarding stuff that you haven't seen yet. Anyway, this episode is epic and I'm looking forward for the next ones!
You meen people jumping on the comments as soon as season started with "this is the start of the decline", "you should stop watching now, it's all bad from now on", etc. this type of expectation setting, or what do you mean?
Even in these comments already there are people hinting at future events. Can’t fuckin stand people with less self-control than a literal toddler. It’s absolutely infuriating the amount of incredible shows that have been spoiled and set up for me, and especially reactors.
Lmao your expression when time slows down as the White Walker approaches Jon and finally the look in your eyes 👀 when Jon's sword connects....that is why I love watching reaction videos 😂😂😂. This is phenomenal, both the ep. and the reaction!
I love the sound of Valyrian steel connecting with the Ice Blade. It's like the ice magic is trying to do what it normally does to weapons, but the spellforged valyrian steel completely counters it. You can hear the energy pitch in the blade, it's a very cool effect.
This was the episode that refocused everyone's attention to the real danger and made everything look meaningless in comparison. Easily in the top 3 episodes of the whole show, for me at least. I think I watched it two or three times back to back when it came out.
Always love these reactions … can’t wait for the season 6 ones (my favourite season) Someone has probably already pointed it out but Walkers are the ice creatures, the wights are their undead army - they are two separate groups
It feels like I’ve been waiting for this Hardhome episode for years I’m so damn excited to be finally watching this reaction im actually alittle emotional right now! How bloody brilliant was this!!!
I've been refreshing your RUclips page all morning to see if the upload arrived, as if it were some exam result that would change my life. How'd you guys make this an important part of my routine?
I think dany's quest to the throne and marching on Westeros is similar to the march of the night king on Westeros with his army, both has the biggest army in the show but they have opposite goals. I mean the dragons are nuclear weapon, more like ICE VS FIRE.
GRRM talked about this and the meaning of ice and fire. "well of course the two outlying ones - the things that are going on north of the wall and Daenerys Targaryen on the other continent with her dragons are of course the Ice and Fire of the title A Song of Ice and Fire". they're opposing forces that will crush and fight at some time. “I mean… Fire is love, fire is passion, fire is sexual ardor and all of these things. Ice is betrayal, ice is revenge, ice is… you know, that kind of cold inhumanity and all that stuff is being played out in the books" - GRRM dany's quest for the throne is bigger than wanting justice for her family. it's her home, it's her duty (just like it is Stannis'). who sits the iron throne when the ice force comes down to kill everyone, does matter. who'll be there to lead the people against the winter? Cersei? Stannis? Dany? no one?
@@Nihilanth while everything is correct, one part isn't, it's her make-belief duty, her thinking it is doesn't make it so, she doesn't know any prophecies, she doesn't know at this point about the threat from the north, she just imagined some world due to her own experienced thus far and thinks it's right and just and it's her "duty"
@@nickrubin7312 "she doesn't know any prophecy" yeah, sadly the writers took that off from the show. in the books she has plenty of dreams about defeating the white walker or facing the "iced breath". quaithe surrounded Dany with prophecies and also in the house of the undying. i say she thinks it's her duty because the circumstances she was in since the day she was born led her to that. dany's entire arch has been putting her dreams aside for what she thinks is the right thing to do. when she decided to stay and free the unsullied while ser barristan was telling her to leave and go to Pentos or Myr. when she decided to free yunkai even tho ser jorah was telling her that yunkai wouldn't take her any closer to the iron throne. "we have two hundred thousand reasons to take the city". or when she decided to stay in meereen cause she wouldn't allow the former slaves to return to chains, even tho ser barristan and ser jorah were counciling Dany to leave and sail to Westeros. it's her duty to protect the former slavers and deal with the situation she created, and that goes for the common people of Westeros too. she has been receiving information about Joffrey, Cersei, Tommen, Stannis and Robert since season 1. you can't deny that she has that sense of duty of returning to Westeros and getting justice, since they were the ones who annihilated her entire family and where willing to murder 2 children, before they had the chance to escape. in her mind, how can she allow the Lannisters and Baratheons to keep their tyranny over the common people/other houses? in the books, we have that pretty clear in dany's mind, she wants to stay and have a happy life with Daario, but the other part of her wants to return cause she feels that it's her duty with the common people and it's a duty with her ancestors. Stannis wants the throne cause he thinks it his duty with the realm and the common people since he was the next in line after Robert. Dany wants the throne cause she thinks it's her duty with the realm and the common people since she was the next in line after Viserys
I actually lowkey hate the mofos that keep trying to push this narrative that season 5-8 were crap to new show reactors. Can they let them enjoy the journey on their own and make their own decisions on how they feel?? It's going to be different for them as they don't need to wait a whole year for new seasons or even week to week. That completely changes the way a person would view a certain episode or plot point. I remember even in game of thrones season 3 and 4, a lot of people were still bitching and moaning lol. Especially in that Watchers of the Wall episode. Most people were whining because the whole episode was about the Wall and they didn't care for the nights watch. They wanted to know Tyrion's fate and how the show would wrap so many different plots with one episode left. These reactors are not book purists, majority of them don't even know any of the missing characters or plot points from the books, so they don't have the same expectations. Even with some shaky writing at times in season 5 and 6, Game of thrones was still top tier television if you compare it to majority of what is out there. Even season 7 and 8 had some crazy moments. Both seasons just needed more episodes and showrunners that still cared about the story and characters lol.
@@Craplatte He wasn't there to play the Mountain in the first place but to play various tall characters like giants and white walkers, and then they lost the actor for the Mountain and didn't have time to do proper casting for a new one, so they used Ian Whyte (if I recall his name correctly) as a stand-in since they already had him around, officially not an actual recasting. It was always intended to be temporary, until the Mountain was going to be featured more prominently and they were going to actually recast the role. But that didn't mean they weren't going to keep Ian around for those other roles. I believe he was used for multiple roles in every season, including season 4 when the Mountain was finally properly recast.
I remember when I saw this episode, my jaw dropped because usually, action packed episode happens at episode 9 of each season so I wasn't expecting this Hardhome fight at all!
Meet the Night King my friends, the danger in the neverending winterlands of beyond the wall ! Also I like that contrast sequence/camera shot, when they arrive on boat everyone ashore is a living, and when they leave everyone ashore is a wight. Chilling ending with no music or sound except from the water, leaving people contempling the huuuuge problem coming ahead.
When I think of Game of Thrones and just one scene is always that White Walker Leader slowly raising his arms like you think your something. We’ll look at this. One of the coolest scenes in the whole series how they all just rise after that and looks at Jon in the boat.
Don't know why everyone falls for Danny's big lie ie that she doesn't want to stop the wheel, she wants to break it. Total lie - the wheel will not be broken if she gets her way, it will just be stopped with her on top.
I think that's just stupid writing, a si do think it's supposed to be a good thing but the writers dont understand that it's not, and I'm saying that as someone who's quite indifferent to dany
28:10. He said it that way so that Tormund would have his back. If they hear it from Tormund, than it must be true. It’s actually a high IQ play to get the wildlings to see that he trusts John.
Pudgey’s face from 31:00 forward of just straight 😮 😂 One of the best episodes of the show. Everything that’s happening all at once, great storytelling in my opinion.
Bro the last 10 mins...there's no words being spoken and yet it can't get any spookier...it's just a silence of the graveyard..and a dull colorless fatalism all around. Hardhome is straight up unnerving. The "shield that guards the realms of men" finally comes face to face with Death itself!
23:50 The problem I've always had with Dany is that she never really meant that, out of all the candidates she's the one that has always put herself above the commoners, yes she has some scenes like that one where she's surrounded by them, but for the most part she sits on top of a massive pyramid, always looking down on others, having people do the dirty work for her and wanting to take Westeros ON A WHIM, because she's never lived there nor she knows the country or people, she says she wants to make the place better but in reality she just wants to be on top of the wheel, not break it.
Disagree on one point. I wouldn’t say it’s a whim, because it’s been the thing she was raised on. Going back to Westeros. Reclaiming what’s rightfully theirs. She didn’t wake up one day and go “You know what…” But definitely everything else
@@zandergamer5429 hardcore agree with you. People while believing in her have also questioned her logic. Like when she was in Qarth throwing tantrums and fits, the spice merchant (spice king?) had to remind her she’d never even been to Westeros! What she’s saying sounds good, but it’s lacking
@@NiKiMa023 I feel like Dany and Stannis are the exact opposite in that way, Dany's charismatic and appealing and earns the trust of people (the characters in the show and the viewers) easily but her actions are against what she says. @@NiKiMa023 Stannis has always been the rightful Baratheon heir. After him it would be Shireen, and after her they'd be looking around for Roberts oldest bastard, Gendry.
Loved the extreme highs and lows of this episode. Loving how Cersei being brought down low is already causing conflict in the hearts of our reactors.
me as well, i was very nervous for the reactions towards cersei towards the end of s5 and i’m glad that they didn’t disappoint!

As a German watching this in english now Im getting goosebumps. He is a German actor saying a "Gift" for the thin man. Gift is the german word for poison and he pulls out a bottle of poison :000
I never even considered that Olly was thinking of himself during Sam's speech. That's a great take, Pudgey.
Yup! Rape ≥ flaying in 2023...
Most annoying character fór sure, up there with Pycelle
You described me too, and to think what they did to Jon later on.
@@Tormund_Giantsbrain I hated more what they did to him as a character, not necessarily when he ended up.
He's was the main guy totally sidelined and disregarded, turned into "my queen" meme.
@@stevem2323 Right. That's what I said, it's how they went from point A to to point B that could've been done a lot better. But at the same token you also have to remember that a large part of this fandom would've forgiven all the blabbering, all the mah queen stuff, if only the show had a traditional ending with him sitting on the chair with his wife.
@@Tormund_Giantsbrain Naaah, most of the fandom hates what they did to him as a character, he was pushed aside completely.
Tho him being caretaker of the throne and giving it to Bran would be good too.
He also directed episodes 1, 6 and 7 of season 1 of HotD.
imagine how terrifying it would've been if at the end he just walked down the dock, bent down, touched the water and it instantly FROZE
"He's a weapon' gotta be the best quote
Knew Spartan would luv Jon’s speech to the free folk. That was boss talk.
The best thing about this episode is that the show trains you for 5 Seasons that Episode 9 is the big one and then they just drop this awesome shit in the last half of Episode 8 where you would never expect it
I thought it trained you that episode 9 was the tragic one (Ned, Lewin, Robb & Catelyn, Ygritte).
“Omg I haven’t breathed in like three minutes” 😂
Love the reaction when Jon parry's the white walker with his sword, Spartan was literally jumping in his seat😂
Writing this before I watch, but Spartans gonna pitch a tent for Jon this episode 😂
Lol accurate
He really thinks Jon is a top fighter or “weapon”. Jon easily got whooped against Karl. Jon is a decent fighter with a ton of heart.
@Itsyo Boyb his plot armor is pretty thick, but you right, he's scrappy but not overly skilled
@@itsyoboyb6314 Bullshit, Karl is top tier with the knives and if they were outised that same Karl would las a minute.
Again with the plot armour crap, Jon is absolutley skilled.
One of the best reactions to GoT so far on RUclips ! Can’t wait to see you react to Johns return back lol
If the HS is the villain is Cersei the hero? 🤔
@@BhBc8f8 you cant really look at it like heroes and villains in game if thrones. Most if not all of the characters are gray. If a certain arc is from cersei's perspective then she would be the protagonist of it, and HS the antagonist, but neither are the hero or villain
@@TheOriginalRaxin yea agree
The line Pudgey highlighted in regards to Jon... Sam says, "he always comes back"
Spartan saying, I wonder if Valyrian Steel can do anything. I don't think it does. Then Valyrian Steel enters the scene saying hold my hilt.
The in unison “Oh my God” at 31:09 made me laugh out loud 😂
Also, you guys are insanely good at predicting some future events for this show. I’m astonished
If y’all honestly believe Pudgey doesn’t watch ahead, read stuff about the episodes, and take notes, I don’t know what to tell you.
Battle at Hardhome gives me chills every time
Yesss! Hardhome is a great episode of Season 5! Buzzing for the next two reactions as the season wraps up in such a crazy way! Thanks for the anticipation build too, you guys really know how to keep us engaged here on RUclips! 💞
Pudgey might be the cleverest person ive ever seen watch this show, and ive seen a lot of reactions.
This is the episode that made Miguel Sapochnik a hot commodity. The one-shots tracking Jon during the battle was epic.

Hardhome is one of my favourite GoT episodes.
I wish people weren't so eager to set up expectations for you guys all the time, regarding stuff that you haven't seen yet.
Anyway, this episode is epic and I'm looking forward for the next ones!
Exactly!!
Same . Omg stop trying to get them to feel a certain way.. Just let them go in ignorant like we all did
Agreed!
That battle sequence is one of the iconic things that puts GoT over the top.
"I'm not going to stop the wheel; I'm going to break the wheel."
This was the episode that refocused everyone's attention to the real danger and made everything look meaningless in comparison. Easily in the top 3 episodes of the whole show, for me at least. I think I watched it two or three times back to back when it came out.
The amount of times Pudgey says NAUR NAUR NAUR is sending me
Hardhome sequence is without a doubt the best sequence in the entire show.
That Nun doesn't need Lanister charity she owns UFC Richmond.
Always love these reactions … can’t wait for the season 6 ones (my favourite season)
Someone has probably already pointed it out but Walkers are the ice creatures, the wights are their undead army - they are two separate groups
I’m so happy you guys are excited and love it! Season 6 is BY FAR my favorite. Just wait
It feels like I’ve been waiting for this Hardhome episode for years I’m so damn excited to be finally watching this reaction im actually alittle emotional right now! How bloody brilliant was this!!!
After a somewhat uneven season, this episode really nailed it. The entire hopelessness of the ending.
I've been refreshing your RUclips page all morning to see if the upload arrived, as if it were some exam result that would change my life. How'd you guys make this an important part of my routine?
I literally just caught up to you guys last episode and this just dropped! Good job keep it up! Don't make us wait too long!
Man, the Night King raising his hands and bringing the dead back to life. Such an epic scene.
“Come at me, crow.”
Been waiting on this one for Sparto’s gleeful squeals lol 😂
I love how that white walker stood there like, "COME AT ME CROW!"
The moment Jon kills the White Walker is one of the most well constructed sequences in TV history.
When this episode aired, it caught me off-guard. I didn’t except such a sudden action at the end and was really thrilled though out. Very good battle.
Ice is betrayal, ice is revenge, ice is… you know, that kind of cold inhumanity and all that stuff is being played out in the books" - GRRM
dany's quest for the throne is bigger than wanting justice for her family. it's her home, it's her duty (just like it is Stannis').
who sits the iron throne when the ice force comes down to kill everyone, does matter. who'll be there to lead the people against the winter? Cersei? Stannis? Dany? no one?
@@Nihilanth
very good point and I agree.
Well said 👏
@@Nihilanth while everything is correct, one part isn't, it's her make-belief duty, her thinking it is doesn't make it so, she doesn't know any prophecies, she doesn't know at this point about the threat from the north, she just imagined some world due to her own experienced thus far and thinks it's right and just and it's her "duty"
Ok, I absolutely *LOVE* it when Pudgey says,
"OH SHIIIIIIIIT!!!!!" 😲
Fun fact: the giant WunWun was played by the same actor as the 2nd Mountain. The one from the Harrenhal scenes from season 2
Cool, I didn't know that! Met the guy at a convention once, nice to see that they got him back for more.
Named after the NY Giants Phil Simms, who wore #11
Fav scene when the Night King raised his arms like come at me bro!

Dragonglass is obsidian, volcanic glass. Valyrian steel is dragon-metal, creates originally by the dragonlords.

Chilling ending with no music or sound except from the water, leaving people contempling the huuuuge problem coming ahead.

Pudgey’s face from 31:00 forward of just straight 😮 😂
One of the best episodes of the show.
She didn’t wake up one day and go “You know what…”
But definitely everything else
@@NiKiMa023 Okay I get that, maybe it's not on a whim exactly but still a selfish reason that goes against what she's supposedly fighting against
@@zandergamer5429 hardcore agree with you.
Stannis on the other hand is not charismatic, speaks in a way that sounds more aggressive and not appealing but his actions speak louder than his own words, even though he also has amazing quotes that he CAN back up through his actions.
