  • Should you get CLOSED CELL SPRAY FOAM INSULATION in your LUTON CAMPER CONVERSION? Well, we did and here's our honest review and experience of the entire process.
After careful planning and budgeting, we decided to get spray foam insulation installed by PROTEC, a professional spray foam insulation company. They came to us and insulated the van on the driveway. It took approximately 2 hours to spray and was workable straight away.
We highly recommend PROTEC for their service.
Also, we chose PROTEC because they use Lapolla spray foam. It is water-based and made from recycled plastic bottles -
Why we chose closed-cell spray foam insulation from PROTEC:
    1) Highest R-Value of any campervan insulation material.
    2) Closed-cell spray foam has no air pockets and doesn't hold any moisture.
    3) When dry, it has a waterproof 'skin', so it acts as a vapour barrier.
    4) Water-based formula so will fill all cracks and crevices.
    5) Unlike other insulation, it takes half a day to install instead of days.
    6) 25-year guarantee, even as a campervan.
    7) Lapolla spray foam is water-based and is made from recycled plastic bottles.
    8) BBA accredited.
We made this video to help novice and experienced installers alike.
Each step details what WE did to OUR Luton campervan, be aware that other Luton vans could be slightly different.

It looks like they didn't spray enough on the walls. The foam only goes to where the wooden battens start, and they did not fill in the additional 20mm width of the battens. So if you board the walls, you'll have a 20mm air gap between the foam and the wall boards where there should be foam.

I've just bought a van the same as you.
I'm looking forward to making a off grid home.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your bed installed,
I was wondering if it would be possible for the van to accommodate the bed above the cab because of the lack of room, and also, top Idea for your van to be professionally insulated.

I'm 6ft tall, and Nemi (wife) is 5ft 9" tall, and we sleep very comfortably up there. Although, it can be a bit awkward to climb over each other if we need the loo, haha.

Great clip, just to dive right in, Iv just purchased a Mercedes Sprinter Luton and as of earlier tonight, am seriously considering this method of insulating it, but am concerned as the R and U values as the web seems to constantly tell me Closed Cell Spray Foam = 75mm > R-Value of 1.9m2K/W - Celotex Foam Board = 75mm > R-Value of 3.4m2K/W so Closed cell spray foam is almost half the R value or Celotex boards, although the U value is 0.025-0.027 Vs Celotex at 0.44 so far better at not conducting heat/cold, but almost 50% worse at retaining heat/cold ..yep, still hurts my head, so going to crack on and see what you use for heating and how you've got on with the temp inside your van ;) Many thanks, Kiwi Steve

      Hi Kiwi Steve,
Trying to get your head around the R and U values of insulation is confusing, especially when it comes to a campervan. But I'll try my best to explain it to you.
R-value measures the thermal resistance of insulation per inch thickness on its own. It does not consider any other factors.
On the other hand, the U-value measures heat transfer that considers the thermal resistance of all building elements, including gaps and fixings (like a wall). It is difficult to determine the U-value unless you know the full extent of the construction and how it's built. This value is essential in ensuring a building complies with building regulations and standards.
Therefore, installing insulation is just as important as its thermal resistance. Spray foam insulation is the best option because it has no joints, air gaps or fixing holes compared to insulation board, which needs cutting and fixing.
Our closed-cell spray foam insulation (Lapolla) has an R-value of 6.5, which is higher than other common insulation types such as PIR (Celotex/Kingspan) board at 2.25, open cell spray foam at 3.5, sheep wool at 3.5, rock wool at 3.0, and foil faced bubble wrap at 1.0.
Our van insulation is impressive at keeping the internal temperature comfortable. Even in super cold weather, we only need to put the heater on low, and sometimes that's too warm. On hot sunny days, it keeps the heat out, and we spent time in Croatia with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, and the internal walls of the van were cool to touch. However, good insulation does have its drawbacks - if the summer heat gets in, it's hard to get it out.
I hope this clears things up for you, Steve.
      Regards,
      Jolly

@@vandercampadventures we have just had our loft insulated with this so are aware of the benefits but we’re looking into this type of van for our next van build and just wondering how much it cost as it’s not cheap? 😊
