Ghib, I was sooo excited when I saw this title. I was like “Yes! He took my advice!” 😃🙏🏻 yup, there’s so many things that you missed. I was born and raised in that whole Katong/East Coast area. I was living at Siglap most of my life. Went to St.Patrick’s School 🤘 but you missed The Peranakan Museum. And also, the home of Encik Zubir Said, who is the composer of our national anthem. Majulah Singapura. You were so close to these 2 locations. The Eurasian Association is also nearby. But I still want to say thank you for heeding my advice of covering the Peranakan/ Eurasian culture. More to cover though. 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 ❤️🙏🏻
Stayed at Katong area since I was born, so I think I can recommend some places. You HAVE to check out the food in that area (Eng’s wonton noodles, Katong shopping centre chicken rice, Donna Manis pastry and cakes, MIKI’s claypot rice at Katong Shopping Centre, Fried Hokkien noodles at Alibaba Coffeeshop, and the awesome bars along the whole stretch of road). It’s an area not just filled with heritage and culture, but also many famous food that’s been around that area for many years!
I feel Ken knows so much about Singapore is because he takes a lot of effort uncovering every aspect of it and takes pain to find out more, I am proud of him! And it’s nice to have James once in a while in your video as going around places alone can appear rather lonely. Support you guys, cheers!
Next time you are in Katong for Laksa, do a tasting comparison between 328 Laksa and "The Original Katong Laksa" located just across the road at Roxy Square. The advertisement and publicity for 328 is just far too great. Go compare :) Just order a small bowl from each stall, Cheers!
James, check out Dunman Duck Rice in the basement of Dunman Food Centre. You guys were about to walk past it at 9:24. Lots of good food in the Katong/Joo Chiat area but Dunman Duck Rice is one of the more underrated ones.
i like to watch the two of u, good friendship lasting it makes me happy, but ive never been to Katong area cuz its a bit hard to get there by MRT though, ive felt similar vibes before by walking from Tanjong pagar stn to Chinatown stn instead, anyway nice video, i enjoyed it, thx again!
Unfortunately, Katong is indeed mostly food and the heritage building only. Do visit the Marine Parade area nearby and plan an east coast park cycling trip at the same time. Locals like to cycle in east coast park and cross the highway over to Marine Parade area for food, shopping and HDB life.
2:35 Katong has height restrictions on buildings because of the planes flying by :) The chicken rice/porridge at 8:43 is highly recommended, so is Mr and Mrs Morgan's prata at the corner coffeeshop with the cai fan. Some say that their prata is the best in SG. James can get his groceries at marine parade wet market, geylang serai wet market, parkway parade or i12 katong. Latter 2 will be much more convenient but expensive.
I12 closed for a year. As for the height restriction, it doesn't really make sense. Surrounding katong estate are a few condominiums. Probably due to the plot ratio hence its difficult for a developer to buy the land to rebuild into a condo etc.
I live behind these colourful buildings and there's always alot of Japanese taking photo there. Honestly, there's a nicer stretch of colourful peranakan building near these stretch where the colours are not worn off. Fun fact, there's alot of angmoh ( British and Americans) living behind the colourful houses 😬
That mixed rice stall you past by with James? That kopitiam (Tin Yeang Restaurant) has one of the best prata stalls around, Mr and Mrs Mohgan. Check them out when you are trying food in that area!
Katong, if you walk a bit, you can find a huge mall n hdb shopping neighbourhood, mall is called parkway parade n the hdb centre is marine parade, if I remembered correctly...
Actually you should go back at night, Katong has a pretty different scene at night. I believe some of the coffeeshops even convert to bars in the evening. Not sure though, it has been a year since I went there cause I don't live near that area.
You can visit the Hindu temple just located the street adjacent to Katong Laksa (Ceylon Rd). It’s a temple built by the Sri Lankan tamil community somewhere in 1930s. The road is called Ceylon Rd as it is the former name of Sri Lanka. Cheers :)
Katong Shopping Centre foodcourt (Basement) - Probably one of the best chicken rice places in SG. Prepare to wait at least 1/2 hour. Serves 2 kinds of soup, which are refillable. Also refillable side salad (ah char) dish. Great boneless chicken. $6 per plate, but I'll recommend asking for half a chicken to share between 2 people. Birds of Paradise Gelato - always packed dessert place. Has no table/seating, so everyone just stands around whilst eating/chatting. Punggol Nasi Lemak - a franchise of the popular chain. The rice and fried chicken are to die for. Great late night snack place.
It is praiseworthy to go out in the sun and vlog. Maybe sometimes you can take it easy and do it at night so it is cooler? There should be some scenery that you can only see at night too :)
Katong shopping centre, chicken rice and laksa Yong Tau Foo. And chocolate tarts and banana pie from Dona Manis traditional cake shop run by old uncles and aunties! There's also a nice mixed rice stall at marine parade hawker centre! Pricier than usual but nice. I love katong area also for its unique flavour and close proximity to town. Direct buses up the expressway!
James, u made the right choice! Katong n its extension further on - Siglap which is more suburban - is one of the best areas to live in! Btw, there are many lanes n also the main street of East Coast Rd u haven't explored!
Before the entire stretched of land was reclaimed, along Marine Parade and East Coast Park, Katong was just beside the sea. There used to be a fishing village there. Now they are all gone.
Hi, have U heard of a Japanese supermarket which was closed more than 35 years ago but that name still popular till today. Ask any taxi driver for directions.
Danji Korean BBQ (small Korean family owned restaurant) and Eng's Wanton Noodles is near ur place! Also check out katong shopping centre chicken rice. Then 84 marine parade Central hawker centre, there has a great deal of good food! Birds of Paradise ice cream is good too.
Buy groceries at Giant or NTUC at Katong, Marine Parade or Parkway Parade. Buy household stuff at Daiso in Parkway Parade; even cheaper at shophouses at 80 Marine Parade area near Parkway Parade. Food is everywhere at Katong, Marine Parade, Parkway Parade. Just keep exploring and ask ppl there.
Hi Michelle, Chin Mee Chin kopitiam had permanently shut down their store in 2019 last year. It is gone already.😓 ▪︎ Glory Food had also closed in Aug 2019. 😓 Sigh. I am a Peranakan and it saddens me greatly that Glory Food is gone. Very sad. I am devastated.
Oh wtf I stayed just minutes away on Seraya lane on my last visit to Singapore and didn't even visit the area on the video. I wish I knew about Dunman food centre, Mohgan's prata and the Peranakan houses. We walked all the way to Old Airport food centre a few times. Will definitely come back again though!
East area is the best. I grew up there and sadly I've moved to the west. Siglap, changi village, katong, bedok, kallang airport etc; All the good food, best is bedok has the most food centres and coffee shops in Singapore. Basically every 10 steps you can find food lol
Shophouses should be quite common back in the early days of Singapore. Similar concept as what you see now; level 1 is the business area, level 2 are for accommodation. The early days, the owner would divide the level 2 into many small compartment units to rent out, which sometimes may be quite be quite unconducive for staying. But as public house like HDB came about, such shophouses became less popular. You should visit one of the Peranakan houses in this video one of these days. I had a relative who used to stay in such houses and I visited the place couple times, had fun running around. The house is quite big actually.
There is a famous Roti Prata inside the coffeeshop next to the Dunman food centre. And as for Mixed Rice, my personal favourite is the stall inside the coffeeshop opposite Canadian International School, they are open on weekdays only. Their pork cutlet is thick and juicy.
back in the 19th Century, before today Little India exist in Serangoon... Katong is the place where all Indians hang around. And today, its a district with many wealthy people too.
Many of the shophouses in sg are consciously conserved under the law. The govt sets many restrictions and rules on the owners and how the buildings r kept in its original state n maintained to keep this continuous nice building fascade
If you're looking for good food around the Joo Chiat/ Katong area, you can try 1. You Kee XO Restaurant - they sell really good roasted duck / roasted pork rice. Must try! 2. Baba Chews - modern peranankan food 3. Dunman Food Centre - try the braised duck rice!! There's a store which usually has a really long queue. Pretty famous as well 4. Katong Shopping Centre foodcourt - chicken rice (super long queue, but super good) 5. Cider Pit - best place for drinks 6. British Hainan (a little far away, but still within the joo chiat area) - serves fusion food, but their beef noodles are the best I've had so far I grew up in this area and love finding good food. So, I hope you'll be able to enjoy the amazing food around this area and happy exploring!
15mins walk to the beach(east coast park) extended to Marina Bay sands, 20mins bus rides to to city, 10mins car ride to the city. 30mins car ride to the airport, 60mins bus ride to changi airport(single trip Svc36) 15mins car ride to tanah merah ferry terminal, 60mins bus ride to tanah merah ferry terminal to depart to Indonesia, batam, bintan island(tanjung pinang(100mins), lagoi resort(60mins) closest fair price finest - parkway parade, malls - katong I12, Katong Square, Katong V, Parkway parade it's a good place to live too, coming years the mrt line(Thomson east coast) will be completed for service from Bayshore to woodlands. I lived there for 19 years, quite good with the place. I just moved household. It's a good place and a memorable Place to live in.
the terrace house that you are seeing along the street on Singapore Conservative house, and they are not allow to demolish it, and its to preserve it heritage too

Ghib spouting out Singlish naturally lol! I think he didn't realize he's sounding more Singaporean now lol!

Your finally exploring my culture with a Taiwanese. Yeah.... happy

James, u made the right choice! Katong n its extension further on - Siglap which is more suburban - is one of the best areas to live in! Btw, there are many lanes n also the main street of East Coast Rd u haven't explored!
You can visit Kway Guan Huat at 95 Joo Chiat Road for Popiah and handmade Popiah skins! One of the best in Singapore!

This is a heritage site that is why there are not a lot of HDB flats here.

It is a Singaporean who uses can naturally🤣🤣🤣
Let me know if you need a tour around any of the places in Singapore, regarding places, history or even food.
What is mixed rice.
There's a few things here which are either rich in culture or just famous. There is the red house which used to be occupied by ah wang. Opposite that where that new hotel used to be an old police station. There's also tay bun guan or sth behind the red House but was also demolished. Further up from the colourful shophouses houses those bars which literally become the 2nd geylang over the years. The ex president Nathan also lives opposite the European place at ceylon Road.
If you want to up your view count....go to the red light district also...
