A neat touch that I liked was how Otto and Norman called each other by their last names during their first meetings, but after Spidey put the new chip on Ock, they called each other by their first names!

Also the spidersense scene was one of the most incredible moments and really one of the few times a spiderman movie really draws you into his perspective
The best part is when he looks around at the villains questioningly, and lingers on electro, than looks around more and closes his eyes, after he opens his eyes and shoots goblin. The fact that electro is the first one (other than goblin) to go evil, and that Tom couldn’t originally find out exactly who the threat was until he focuses was great.

Andrew Garfield killed it, I'm almost certain he's gonna be in more Spider-Man movies after this and I honestly can't wait. I'm so happy he got to be in this and show everyone how good he can be as Spider-Man
I always LOVED Garfield's Spider-Man. I agreed that his Parker was a bit too cool, but it hits differently knowing that he is just A version of Peter Parker, and not THE Peter Parker. Why couldn't there be a cooler Peter Parker out there? I'd be incredibly surprised if Sony didn't give him his 3rd solo film. Love these long episodes. Great work. I believe Andrew's "big catch" was purposely done to make it look as if he'd replayed it in his head a million times. This time it was easy for him, he wasn't going to make ANY mistakes on this move again.
It's cut from their The Weekly Planet podcast. They always talk about various topics and then one big topic. So, if you like it, you can get it all the time there.
Since they teased the line “rent” only for it to not be Mr. Ditkovich, I can only give the movie an 5/10. 3-4 points being lost similar to the email he never received
I'm actually glad they didn't put Ditkovich in it. It would've been funny and all, but it would've undercut the tone of that entire scene. One of the things I really liked about this film that separated it from a lot of MCU movies is that it let the emotional moments play out and didn't detract from them with inappropriately placed jokes. The ending was very somber and bittersweet and having Ditkovich yelling at Peter about rent would have completely ruined the mood for an easy gag. Maybe they could put him or his daughter in a sequel or something.
This film was beautiful. Andrew’s Peter becoming darker because of Gwen’s death is OUTSTANDING, him looking at Peter and MJ with a heartbroken look before being reminded by Tobey that he can find love again is brilliant. I love the fact that “Great Power, comes Great Responsibility” connects the Peter’s just as much as their names and their masks. Them talking about their own unique individual heartbreaks, comparing villains and Tobey and Andrew being AWFUL partners because they aren’t used to it and that’s when Holland’s Spider-Man to me establishes himself with this one moment as a different Spider-Man by becoming a leader and making them work together successfully as a team because he was an Avenger and learnt how to work in a team quickly. The ending to this film is perfect and genuinely got me so excited for the future. An apartment, a homemade suit that looks and feels like Spider-Man, a fun swing through New York and a Spider-Boy being replaced by the Spider-Man. Peter leaving Ned and MJ after he made the world forget who Peter Parker is so he can let them live a happy life (something he always wanted for them) is perfect and a great ending to the trilogy, I expect to see them in Iron Heart as she is in MIT with them. And yes, I want to see TASM 3. This film never said which Spider-Man was better, it let them have conversations about their own failures and things they need to improve or have improved on. This film showed (on purpose) what Spider-Man should and shouldn’t be. Nostalgia was there but it was to help the story and make it fresh and unique. I’m seeing it for a second time today (Tuesday here in England) and on Thursday.
Dr strange also said that he used the spell after a party. Strange doesn’t care so much about using magic to mess with people and he’ll do his avenger buddy a solid. But he does get annoyed with Peter when he realizes that Peter did nothing to overturn the decision before trying to bend time and space
Strange will do minor Reversible spells for fun but won't do incredibly dangerous universe changing if there are no other options. He thought Peter exhausted his options and was rightfully pissed when he finds out he didn't

I thought maybe that would happen too and then lead to Ned turning evil when MJ eventually leaves him for Peter. Probably better off avoiding the cliches though.
Especially when you realize how powerful his punches are. That scene where they were fighting on the giant Captain America shield and he dents the steel beneath him when Goblin dodged his punch.
The secret identity problem for Peter is that unlike other Marvel Heroes his family and friends lives gets interrupted and they're easily accessible. Thor's family and friends are dead/untouchable. Tony's family is rich beyond people's dream so they're somewhat safe. Natasha's family is spies and super soldiers. Hawkeye's family is hidden from public eyes. Hulk doesn't really have a family. Steve also didn't have a family. See where I'm getting at?
The most accessible other one I can think of is Antman. Yellowjacket does use that to his advantage in the first movie. But nobody knows if Antman is alive/snapped back yet in present day MCU so using his ex wife and daughter to get to him is not a realistic idea at the moment.

One of the really dark turns I liked in this film was at the end when Tom Holland's Spidey just beats the shit out of Green Goblin, with no thought for tactics or strategy, he just wanted to punch him
In all fairness, (and I think James mentioned this a little bit) I think it's kind of a silly point that other people in the universe have their identity known so it shouldn't be a problem for Peter. I think MCU Peter has consistently shown that - at the end of the day - he just wants to be a kid and have friends. He likes being Spider-Man, but he wants to have moments in his life that are just for him and his friends and family. Throughout the Home trilogy, he shows us that he doesn't really like having the spotlight thrust on him, even as Peter. Which also makes total sense for a kid, by the way. Peter's in a very specific situation where he also has to go to public school while being a known superhero. He also doesn't want his family hurt, and he doesn't necessarily have the support that other heroes in the MCU have. We're kind of seeing this pop up in Hawkeye as well with the "Thanos was Right" bit that all of the heroes may have some detractors, and if you're street level - that may be hard to deal with. We know that Tony had a lot of people who disliked him, but he also had the support of a billion-dollar company and PR team. I think it's completely reasonable that people would react negatively to him in the universe as opposed to some of the other heroes, as MCU Peter is also dealing with an intense misinformation campaign led by Jameson throughout the entire film. Peter's name is only cleared with the law, which doesn't matter to Jameson - who relentlessly attacks Spider-Man either way. This is also something that was often true in the comics. Jameson did have supporters who grew to dislike Spider-Man due to his attacks, and this is even more relevant in our world today with the conspiracy stuff that people believe without doing research. In the movie, using the spell is shown to not be entirely about Peter, but about how his choices affect other people, which is thematically matched with the rest of the film. Peter doesn't like that his friends and family have to suffer for his screw ups, and it's ultimately why (SPOILERS, STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE) he chooses to move on at the end, because he doesn't want to put anyone in harms way at all. I do get the argument that Strange shouldn't have used the spell, but I do think that it fits the MCUs arrogant characterization of him that he would (which Mason mentioned). I do think that we have to suspend disbelief with solo movies to allow the heroes to take care of problems themselves, just like we've always had to do with the comics. Every solo run in the comics is that way, and there's always some hand-wave reason that they have to do this themselves.
*He also doesn't want his family hurt, and he doesn't necessarily have the support that other heroes in the MCU have* Agreed...afterall that is why Hawkeye has his family living on a remote farm afterall
I agree with your point. Especially when the other Avengers are known to work with the government, are contractors, don't live on Earth, or work/ own a company. I also think the multiverse of madness is going to explain a little bit more of the opening of the multiverse. If Spider-Man is at fault for the other villains and heroes coming in, why do we then have a Multiverse of Madness movie? There are things lining up from Loki and WandaVision tv shows, where other parts of the world is causing this rift.
Agree with everything you said but I also think the Dr. Strange part was well explained. For me anyway. It was a casual spell which as they established, he has used probably several times before for some mundane casual reasons. The only reason it went wrong was because Peter started mucking with it over and over. I don't really think that's an indictment on Dr. Strange.
@@TheMelMan I agree, but I do think that Dr. Strange could have explained it a little better to Peter. And it would have made sense to discuss the repercussions of it before casting it.
@@whatsisface755 Yeah that's true. That part I can probably chalk up to arrogance or inability to relate to someone who doesn't have the same knowledge or experience. I've talked to lawyers who have been very rude because they expected me to have the same level of knowledge as them on particular issues. EDIT: That would actually fit with how he yelled at Peter when he discovered that Peter didn't even try to appeal the rejection.
That's a good point too. I also believe his name is said by Gwen Stacey and Electro put two together. So he knows Spider-Man's name, just not what he looks like. Amazing Spider-Man 2 is so hard to get through, but I am pretty sure that's how it went.
@@dingle2987 imagine eddie brock lived in the garfield universe, and discovered parker's identity while investigating gwen Stacy's death, only for Peter to do some clever trick to misdirect everyone, and it wrecked Eddie's tv show
Matt did tell Peter that he still had to deal with the court of public opinion, despite the murder charges being dropped. And it was shown that a ton of people still believed he was a murderer. So that, plus him being being known as spider-man putting his friends and family at risk would make him turn to things he doesn't understand (i.e magic) to fix it. Strange and Wong talk about the spell they're going to use like it's not that big of a deal and ultimately it would've worked had Peter not fucked it up for Strange. Strange going through with the plan in the first place speaks to his well-known arrogance, especially since he apparently isn't sorcerer supreme anymore. EDIT Also, May was one of the big reason he took pity on the villains and tried to help them in the first place. She told him that he needed to help Norman, and even as she was dying said he's doing the right thing and needs to help them. Tobey and Andrew reinforce this idea to Peter later on as well ("It's what we do"). It wasn't just Pete not wanting him and his friends to miss out on MIT. May dug her own grave.
When Matt Murdock said that, I immediately thought this will be a play on cancel culture, and how people will be divided on whether to like Spider-Man, when it just a high schooler under the mask. And like you said, May was influential for this villains. Furthermore, they played the villains like being mentally ill or suffering with the powers they have. Green Goblin really did seem like a homeless person with multiple personalities. So if you can help him, why not? I love the fact that unlike the other Avengers, Spider-Man really doesn't try to kill anyone. That's really refreshing.
Also Strange says he forgets Peter is a kid, he clearly thought he'd given it more thought, and it was messing with his life in bigger ways than just making it more "messy" as he puts it. Even after the spell gets messed up Strange would have had the issue solved quickly too, it's only escalated because of Peter (and May's) compassion for the villains. This criticism relies on Strange knowing how out of hand it was going to get, but every indication is that is just wasn't that big of a deal, but Spider-Man isn't a pragmatist like he is. That's why I like this film so much, all the dilemma's are very characterful.
My favorite acting moment from the entire movie? When Tobey Maguire stopped Tom from killing Goblin without any words. I was blown away by how many words Tobey Maguire conveyed in his eyes without saying anything at all. Honestly, the facial acting in that moment made him soar above Andrew's acting for me. His eyes said SOOOOO much. The wisdom and empathy and overall caring he displayed. That moment just hit me so damn hard, idek why. A great performance, I imagine.
Well this J Jonah Jameson seems to be more of a real threat to Spider-Man than the Raimi one so hopefully he is involved with the creation of Scorpion and maybe Rhino and sets them loose on Spider-Man. Or maybe we get Mac Gargan as Venom in this universe.

Personally as someone who hasn’t silly watched Andrew and tobey movies I do think that it’s still an amazing movie to watch. Like Tom’s Spider-Man easily gets the most character development in this movie and he actively accepts responsibility for his actions . Which leaves me hyped for what the other movies are going to do with him
Agreed. I watched the Tobey movies, I remember enjoying the first one, but they had seriously diminishing returns for me and I really disliked the third one. I also hadn't watched any of the Andrew Garfield movies until the day before I saw NWH, when I watched the first one (partly because Tobey 3 left a bad taste and the trailers and reaction for TASM was so bad). I neither liked that movie or the way Spider-Man was written in that movie and couldn't bring myself to watch the second one (although I know most of the beats of the movie). Nevertheless, I really loved seeing the three Spiders-Man working together, and for me Garfield, who going in I would have said was the least likeable, 100% stole the show and I was so happy he got some redemption. I still think Spiderverse did the team-up better with more feels, but this really came far closer than I expected.
Tobey’s Spiderman 2 is a masterpiece. You plan on watching the others? Some real hit and miss but I think they’re all worth a watch for various reasons.
Idk I think he was inexcusably immature in a lot of ways considering he just helped save the universe. Just one example being, he should have told aunt may "sorry but you know nothing about super villains. This is what I do. We're not taking them home."
I like how they also did a Spider-Man ps4 nod with aunt mays grave stone. “When you help someone you help everyone” and how he is starting his journey as a man now knowing the price he has to pay and the sacrifices he has to do for the greater good.
I hated the way Peter Parker looked in PS4 Spider-Man, then I heard they changed it and somehow I'm even more annoyed. Like stick with your creative decisions you clowns.
I don’t think comparing this movie to BvS fits. I’d say more like End Game. End Game was only satisfying because we know and love the characters. Same goes with No Way Home. Very fun movie with satisfying moments when old characters appear and work together/against each other

@@ethanwatson6131 yeah ill be honest i did see this with people that had much less context, one thought it was shit and the other had a good time but thought all the fan service parts were cringe
No idea who else noticed this but in the scene where spiderman gets put in astral form and Strange is failing to grab the box, it's implied that that was just the spidersense instinctually avoiding danger BUT - even better, is that there's a transparent (very easy to miss) version of the traditionally illustrated spidersense, aka the wiggly lines around Peter's head. When I saw it I had a mini freak out because it was such a minute detail but one that I've wanted to see for SO long, executed in a non-intrusive, but also a very natural way that REALLY worked for me
I have a theory, that all of the villains were taken from the moment they learned Spiderman's identity, Doc Oct's memory trails off at that moment, during electro's fight Gwen says Peter's name, eddie Brock was transported the moment he found out about Venom's hive mind that spans universes, green goblin was taken after the Thanksgiving dinner. Lizard was taken after he found Peter's camera, sandman I am not 100% sure because when he first appears he said he trust Peter parker.
The something of a scientist line didn’t really bother me. It makes sense that it would be something he says all the time. And it was really to only time they had a line like that. Very tasteful in my opinion
As someone who’s never seen Tobey or Andrew’s movies, this movie is still amazing without any knowledge. It reminded me of Spiderverse and superheros cartoon episodes where they meet an alternate version of themselves (which is pretty common). Like I didn’t need to know Peter B Parker for Spiderverse to work. I watched a video on all the Easter Eggs in NWH and was actually shocked to find how many lines I thought were completely natural were actually references. I thought the Tobey’s back scene was showing how old he was, not a reference.
@James Sturm I've watched all the live action Spidey films, TASM 1 and 2 included. NWH is a very good film especially for Spidey fans. Kindly fuck off yeah :)
Honestly I’d say this movie balances nostalgic lines like “I’m something of a scientist myself.” perfectly with stuff like Aunt May’s death, it’s all done so well
All the best stuff involved playing with people's expectations. Aunt May's death is handled so well partially because it seems like it's subverted first. The "spidey sense" scene works so well because we've been set up to think he's going to attack Electro. Aunt May's death is inverted when it becomes certain Spider-Man "2" will die, and he shrugs it off saying he's been stabbed before. Even Dock Ock helping at the end. We already had no reason to expect he wouldn't, but it's so believable from a genre perspective that he'd turn again we forgive the other villains for falling for it
I've got to say, I thought May's death was so well done. I really love Tomei's portrayal of May, and I'm very sad to see her go, but this was such a clever way to work in the origin story without doing a lazy Uncle Ben flashback (which I was 100% expecting, going in). Having May speak the lines makes perfect sense, and having her death trigger the Spider-Man out for vengeance moment we've not really seen so far. My favourite Spider-Man movie is Into the Spider-verse, and the thing that movie does so well is re-examining the tropes from different perspectives, and this scene did the same thing for me (also the scene where the other Spideys mention their uncles said the same thing was very reminiscent of the scene in Spider-verse where the Spideys are talking about people they lost).
Peters issue wi having his identity revealed is that people will think he killed Mysterio even if he was cleared by the police, he specifically didn’t want to have his identity known and he’s the youngest hero which invites a lot more criticism
To be honest, Aunt May is the one that got peter to cure the villians. Peter was going to send them back then May told he needed to help them. May chose her own death basically. Doesnt mean the conceit of the movie is a little silly but that is more of an issue with how the wrote Dr. Strange rather than Peter
40:52 I’m pretty sure Peter doesn’t keep using his stark suit because it’s meant to be biocoded to him, so his information was likely deleted from the system and he can’t use it anymore
This seems like a clue as to why he needs to get a GED. It's not just that everyone has forgotten about him, it's really like they never knew him at all. But it's not like the suit itself didn't still exist, so I feel like it winds up being a plothole either way.
@@foxdosantos2625 If that were true then Peter would become even more famous. There would be footage and records of him all over the place with no explanation. The eyes of the entire world would be on him.
I really love how each Spider-Man was fleshed out and they were unique compared to each other and could learn to be a better Spider-Man. Toby became wise and seems to be what uncle Ben wanted and he seemed to make it work with MJ and learned to balance both. An older Spider-Man shows that you can figure it out. Andrew Spider-Man went down a darker road and consumed with guilt and regret but powered through for Gwen. Hinted he started hurting villains to make sure no one could feel like him. Saw both Toby and Tom and knew he wasn’t alone and he could move passed that moment and be a better hero. Tom learned from Toby that there will be death when it comes from this life but you have to be a better hero and forgive because you can’t choose who dies or not. Learned from Andrew what happens when you go down that road and doesn’t help and want to protect the love ones that he has. He taught them to work together.

Some one has definitely said this already, but the villains came through when they learned Spider-Man's identity, not right before they were going to die. They explain this in the movie. This would mean that the only one that will still die is Otto. Otto didn't find out who Spider-Man was until the fusion reactor was too powerful and needed to be thrown into the river, which is a sacrifice he'll still have to make. The villains are the ones who mistakenly think that they're going back destined to die based on Goblin's fate and what Electro says. Sandman and Lizard were never killed in their movies, but they're unaware of that fate. If they're sent back to when they were pulled, Goblin would be right after the Thanksgiving dinner, Lizard would be in the sewers and Sandman would be either with Venom or at the construction site (I'm unsure if Venom revealed Spider-Man's identity or if it was when Tobey was unmasked). Electro is the one that's a bit unexplained. I don't know when Electro found out who Spider-Man was. I think there are some people saying that because he was "absorbing data" he may have discovered it that way. But it seems like he could be sent back in that moment without his powers so he wouldn't have died. I think the idea is that the villains would be cured and sent back, creating new branching timelines like we see in Loki. The timeline that Tobey and Andrew lived through still existed, but now there are other timelines where the villains have their powers taken away.
@@brunopereira6789 That's interesting and I hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure how it would work as the fusion reactor was so dangerous at that point. But Doc Ock definitely has one when he's sent back. Good catch.
28:21 Doc Ock actually said the last thing he remembered was having Spiderman by the throat. That means he hadn't been brought around by Peter yet, and wasn't deep in the river.
The idea that the other Spidermen didn't grow or change during the events of this movie is not true at all. One of the most brilliant things about this is how it redeems them in ways that could only be possible in this particular movie. Andrew is the best example since he learns that he still has what it takes to save people and not just fight his absolute hardest. They both realize they can do a lot more to avoid hurting their enemies. It seems Tobey was already on this path as he says, "trying to do better," but he literally sees that his enemies could have been saved because he does exactly that, even when Tom tries his absolute hardest to prevent him. They go back more hopeful, ready to save every possible life because that's what they do now
You are forgetting that Dr Strange's spell will affect them as well. No one will know who Peter Parker is throughout the multiverse, so all their relationships are effed up as well now
How exactly did they get redeemed? Redeemed from what? Yeah Andrew said he punched harder but is not like he killed anyone. Tobey literally has nothing to redeem himself, except slapping mj in Spider-Man 3 lol. And other than the mj grab they have no emotional moments. The Tobey stopping the glider is just a Spider-Man stopping a killing I don’t think it’s that personal.
I worry Hollywood will take the wrong lesson from this. The next James Bond movie will feature every actor to ever play the role (they'll CGI the dead ones) and it will be the worst movie ever made.
I think the reason Andrew was so focused on compared to Tobey is because Andrew was in dire need of redemption where Tobey got his movies with 2 great movies where Andrew had neither
For Mason’s criticism about the conceit of the film (Peter’s identity being revealed to the world and that being a problem for him even though all other superheroes being known by the entire world), I think the concern has more to do with harm coming to his friends/family because of misinformation. We’ve seen how terrible it can be in the real world when people are presented with facts and just refuse to believe them because their world view doesn’t fit with it. I’m sure that’s very much the reason why JJJ is a reference to Alex Jones, spreading this misinformation. Angry people just want to believe what they want to believe. Like, someone hurled a brick into that apartment, which has got to be a felony, right? Doesn’t matter if Spider-Man gets cleared of murder charges; there are people who already want to believe that he is a murderer just to take him down. Thats dangerous for Peter’s life, and for the rest of those around him. But I know Mason enjoyed the movie, which is why I know I’m allowed to enjoy it, too. EDIT: but I know what Mason is getting at; the first half of the film does really want to hang onto the whole “I want my friends to get into MIT, tho!” schtick, which can seem very childish and shortsighted. Movie gets much heavier after the Goblin turn.
Excellent point. It felt like what's going on with cancel culture, and people believing what they want to believe. Showing the diverse reactions by the teachers to Peter Parker being Spider-Man was an interesting way of showing that too, especially since they know what Peter Parker was like. We should also realize these very smart and capable teenagers didn't get to any college. Not just MIT because the colleges don't want the controversy. That's going to be their lives, if he continues to be Spider-Man.
I agree with they were clearly trying to make it seem like Spider-Man was still this controversial figure but how believable is that? Spider-Man was still an Avenger and seen as a hero before this, right? Far From Home happened in another continent, how prevelant was any media coverage of Mysterio that he would have this loyal backing in the US? I really enjoyed the movie but it is hard to miss several stupid plot devices that are simply there to push the plot forward.
Yeap, and after missing for 5 years, Spiderman probably wasn't as popular as Mysterio. Doesn't help that Spiderman was buddy buddy with Ironman who is hated by a lot of people.
@@Ineedgames this doesnt even make sense. Mysterio wasnt around until after Spiderman returned....and there is no indication Tony Stark is hated by the public in the MCU.
I thought this was the most smartly prioritized film I've ever seen considering so much was in this film. Everyone got their moments and they prioritized the most important things: they fix Hollands spiderman, they transition into his college years with a darker tone, Garfield gets to save MJ, Tobey gets to save Goblin, Otto and especially Goblin is amazing and brutal!!! I loved this movie so much as both a movie and nostalgia trip
I don’t know how you can say this when 2/3rds to 3/4ths of this movie doesn’t involve the other 2 Spidermen. I agree that they absolutely maximized every moment with them together on screen, but up until that point, I thought the movie was very inconsistent and confused in its tone. Andrew, Tobey, Molina and Dafoe are everything we could’ve wanted, but I like almost nothing else about it.
@@WeMissDimebag It's because it tries to do two things at once. Be a personal, sentimental journey of development for Holland's Spider-Man, and play on nostalgia by incorporating the previous Spiderman, creating almost a 'Spiderman: Endgame'. But justifying the set up - and it still makes little sense if we're being honest - and then, trying to give everyone enough to develop to justify them being there, leaves the film just juggling too many plates and not nailing any of them very well, without doing it badly or greatly. Just sort of...doing it. It's an entertaining mess of ideas. Goblin was wasted though and should have stayed around in the MCU for future potential use.
@@pinealdreams1064 I don't even think it's a plate-juggling issue. The movie basically doesn't start until Octavius is cured and then Dafoe betrays them. That's like halfway into the film, if not more. There are huge chunks of this movie where the plot doesn't advance at all. I want to watch it again, but start from the Goblin betrayal, because everything before that is unnecessarily drawn out.
33:29 At first I thought this too, but Andrew was able to save Tom's MJ properly (a traumatic failure from his world), while he was also given relationship advice from Tobey, in that it IS possible to be Spider-man and have a relationship with a significant other, so he shouldn't give up on it. While Tobey himself was able to stop the glider from killing Green Goblin this time. Something he desperately wanted to do not only because he failed to do this himself (in his world) but also because he failed to save his son - and Andrew was able to adjust his back before going back home.
The movie was amazing, sometimes giving us fans what we want is the best move. It was a beautiful reencounter/reunion of generations and lost moments from several marvel properties that we thought were lost.
I think the college thing is overblown. Peter, his friends, and his family were getting harassed and blackballed for months after Spiderman's identity was revealed. MIT refusing to consider their applications was just one part of that.
Everyone talks about how Peter should've asked for a reconsideration, but all I can think is that nothing would have changed, at least for Peter. I can't imagine them changing an obviously blackballed decision just because he asked again.
my favorite moment was when tobi was listening to tom explain he was in the avengers and first was like, thats so cool, and then just get more angry until he almost yells How's This Helping.
The way I see it is Peter was right to try the spell because his identity being public was hurting those close to him, and in reality the stuff they experienced was only the beginning. Those consequences came from him being too cavalier with his identity in the first place (Mysterio, ect). But Aunt May didn’t die because he tried to reverse everything, she died because he messed up the spell wanting the people close to him to still know. So the lesson he ultimately learned (which I have been dying for him to learn from the beginning) is that those close to him who know his identity will always be in danger. With great power comes great responsibility is about more than just using your power to help people, it’s also about keeping those close to you safe, even and especially if that means keeping your identity a secret from them. And as far as why his identity is a big deal even when a lot of heroes have public identities in the mcu A) Spiderman’s secret identity is a key part of who he is for the reasons I just mentioned and many others, and B) He honestly simply just has more ruthless villains than anyone else who will not hesitate to make it personal and hurt those he loves. In the comics other superheroes had public identities while Spiderman didn’t, but that doesn’t mean that he should or that it’s even the smart thing to do. That’s my opinion
I just love seeing all the arguments over this movie compared to the previous raimi movies, like we are all Spider-Man fans can’t we just be happy this movie even happened?
I feel like a lot of the “dumb stuff that you got to get past” is mainly done by the main mcu characters. So even if you don’t hold nostalgia for the other ones, they aren’t the ones bogging it down really
Isn't this more like the Endgame of Spiderman Movies than the BVS of the MCU? In that it's good and satisfying and cathartic, but also makes no sense on its own and has massive consequences for the universe that aren't seriously addressed.
I love the dynamic of the Spider-Man and Andrews Spider-Man. I always thought he wasn’t a bad Spider-Man. And I’m glad he got a lot of play always felt he was under appreciate
I love this movie so much! NWH is definitely the Avengers for Spiderman fans. It paid so much respect, while also giving closure, AND also turning Tom Holland into Spiderman by the end of the movie. I understand why everyone is so emotional about this movie. Marvel gave us Andrew, Tobey, & Tom in the same film for goodness sake! 😭
The way Dr. Strange was so willing to do dumb stuff kept making me expect to see him actually be evil Dr. Strange or something similar. It worked well enough as it was, there is always some dumb plot thread to easily pick to pieces, but I really didn’t expect the movie to end with that being the actual Dr. Strange
Hi James, on the venom subject I think the point was to leave part of himself not only because we get the symbiote suit but also because venom is a hive mind across universes so by leaving part of himself in that universe he can jump back into the mcu to reunite with it. Hence venom in the mcu
Pepper could NOT vouch for Peter because she was under investigation as well, Stark Industries was being flushed out because of the controversy. Peter didn’t just go to Strange because of college, but because his whole life and the lives of everyone around him have come under the fire of public controversy, and it’s only gonna get worse. A lot of the things you mentioned as holes in the story are actually explained in the movie.
The mid-credits scene with Venom wasn’t pointless at all. A piece of Klyntar symbiote was left in the MCU, setting up a multitude of possibilities with Peter Parker, and more excitingly Flash Thompson.
Seems to me there's a blurred line that separates two types of nostalgia/fan service: understanding of the character and recognition of the iconography. Ironically, Octavius has an instance of both, and it just so happens to be the same line/callback. One of them works in the moment, and the other doesn't really stick the landing.
One of my favorite subtle details of the movie was Peter’s Spider sense around his astral form when he was grappling with Dr. Strange. It looked like the cartoonish spider sense visual that has become the norm for his character
I don’t know if someone already said it. But the reason he wants people to forget is cause there are still a lot of people who believe he killed mysterio. And he can and prob will be harassed at home/ school or any place he goes. And no it’s not only 1 guy who believes. But yeah strange was acting kinda strange.
I honestly had so much fun with this movie. I suspended all disbelief at the door and just settled in to it like it was a comfy blanket. I can’t say a single bad thing about it and it is easily my favourite MCU movie of all time.
Mysterio tricked the world that he was an Iron Man type hero, and Iron man had just sacrificed himself to save the world. That's the difference between knowing the identity. Captain America's life, pre-Endgame, was also ruined... He, literally, had to go into hiding after Civil War.
In the UK we like to bottle up and hide our emotions, probably to an unhealthy level but the showing I saw had multiple whoops. First time I experienced this and I quite like it, it added to my excitement
It does, but a lot of what they said was just wrong. Peter's conflict is so much more than wanting to go to college and there is a clear difference between him having his identity known and the other heroes. He isn't a King or billionaire and a bunch of conspiracy theorist still think he is a menace. He is more concerned about how being Spiderman is affecting those in his life he cares about.
Although I’m a year late, going off your ideas they should give venom to ned and make him angry at Peter for not keeping his promise and peters gotta deal with turning his best friend into an enemy
I kinda think using the spell was justified cos Strange said he used it at a party against Wong without consequences so he didn't have a problem using it again, it just went horribly wrong.. he couldve thought it out beforehand but I guess they were leaning into Peter being young and rash. It didn't take me out of the movie and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Great review as always boys 👍
I understand the whole nostalgia bit but it could have easily not worked as well as it did and they pulled it off very well. The movie had great action(some of the best Spidey action weve seen), good emotional moments and tension, good performances, and there were a lot of great shots in this very well directed. And yeah prob the biggest criticism is prob the plot. Yeah it’s is contrived and kinda hand wavy in some parts but it facilitated this great thing that was a big moment for a lot of peoples lives especially with what we’ve gone though the last two years. And honestly even if Tobey and Andrew weren’t in it I think it still would have been a great movie. Like if we just got Tom fighting those villains. Tom and his supporting cast did well and the villains were all good. Excited to see where this goes next. Hopefully Jon Watts comes back. See
Sending them back didn't mean they were going to die. It would just send them back to where they were before they got pulled in. But for SOME of THEM that meant they were going to die. So if a cured Osborn returns to fighting Spider-man, he's not going to launch his glider into himself. Remember Spider-man always tried to save them but failed because their villainous ways led to them killing themselves. And I believe the spell pulled them in before they died because that's the last point in time it could bring them. Whereas the character who remained alive were pulled in at their present.
Heck, if they ever did a bigger live action spider verse type thing and brought these actors back, bring in even more. Bring the Japanese Spider-Man, the 70s live action Spider-Man, bring Nick Cage to play Spider-Man Noir if you want. It’d be cool.

😂😂😂😂 facts
@JackBauer137 But then that wouldn't be the same Mr. Ditkovich from Tobey's universe.
FIX THIS DAMN PORTAL DOOR!!!!

The most accessible other one I can think of is Antman. Yellowjacket does use that to his advantage in the first movie. But nobody knows if Antman is alive/snapped back yet in present day MCU so using his ex wife and daughter to get to him is not a realistic idea at the moment.

And the goblin just laughing like heath ledgers joker was also great
In all fairness, (and I think James mentioned this a little bit) I think it's kind of a silly point that other people in the universe have their identity known so it shouldn't be a problem for Peter.
*He also doesn't want his family hurt, and he doesn't necessarily have the support that other heroes in the MCU have*
Agreed...afterall that is why Hawkeye has his family living on a remote farm afterall
Electro’s psychosis may have confused the spell. He truly believed he knew Spider-Man and that they were best friends.
I like this interpretation.

Doc Ock also repeats, "The power of a sun in the palm of my hand."
@@D_Fyre well he did say it like 5 times in SM2, shouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that he’d repeat it in NWH
@@D_Fyre To be fair, if you ever had the power of the sun in the palm of your hand, you'd say it too.
@@YungLanxx True, but my point is that "I'm something of a scientist, myself" isn't the only callback line made in No Way Home.

Definitely give the OG trilogy a go

@@kianking5601 Andrew is my favorite AND he's the best
Also Jameson on television blasting his name negatively about everything. More polarizing than an article from the Daily Bugle. Thats how i see it.
To be honest, Aunt May is the one that got peter to cure the villians. Peter was going to send them back then May told he needed to help them. May chose her own death basically. Doesnt mean the conceit of the movie is a little silly but that is more of an issue with how the wrote Dr. Strange rather than Peter
The best part of now way home was when Hero by Nickelback played over the end credits
🤣🤣🤣
No joke but that would have been amazing.
Honestly was hoping that would have been the case.
Don’t think the spell effected digital . Like pictures videos or fb passwords

Not difficult to do lol. Mess up number 3, they focused way to much on the fan service side more than making an enjoyable movie. Mess up number 4, the pacing in this movie is atrocious. It drags on during multiple parts of the movie for way to long and the action in this movie was so bland. 🙄🤣
What if the reason Doc Ock became good at the end of Spider-Man 2 was actually because he in a split second, traveled universes and came back cured
Sandman would have to be from the end of SM 3 since he is buddy's with Peter when he first shows up.
@@saberfightguys Good point.
Doc Ock goes back with an arc reactor, so that may stabilize the fusion reactor so he doesn't need to die

Doc Ock actually said the last thing he remembered was having Spiderman by the throat.
That means he hadn't been brought around by Peter yet, and wasn't deep in the river.
I believe they get transported the moment they find the identity out, besides sandman dunno why he knows peter so well
No Way Home is definitely a COVID Movie. They listed a COVID Supervisor in the credits. 🤣
No one will know who Peter Parker is throughout the multiverse, so all their relationships are effed up as well now
Well said
@@benjaminfletcher6632 Maybe they won't be affected because they ARE Peter Parker. The same way Tom Holland didn't forget who he was.

You say it's dumb but tbf if i was a shy teenager who suddenly became infamous and i knew a wizard, i would probably ask him to do some spells too.

That would have been crazy
I can't belive that the one true enemy, corn of coblin, is yet to make how debut
@@WeMissDimebag It's almost like movies are subjective.
@@lexis4490 Way to not engage at all with the criticism. What exactly was the point of clicking reply here lmao
25:16 - Maso predicted Blackbolt's demise.

Peter didn’t just go to Strange because of college, but because his whole life and the lives of everyone around him have come under the fire of public controversy, and it’s only gonna get worse.
A lot of the things you mentioned as holes in the story are actually explained in the movie.
Exactly what I was thinking

Spot on review. Everyone pretending like the film doesn't have flaws just because it delivered amazing moments.
I’m super excited for a non-overpowered Spider-Man in the mcu, no more iron boy
same, im sure they purposely did it so we can see that he has grown and doesnt feel like he needs to play catchup with all his gadgets/abilities
Although I’m a year late, going off your ideas they should give venom to ned and make him angry at Peter for not keeping his promise and peters gotta deal with turning his best friend into an enemy
I dont even think you can necessarily call it nostalgia more of a set up to introduce the multiverse before dr strange 2 and, into the spiderverse 2.
thats what i was thinking, plus its smart to take advantage of nostalgia(bigger demographic=more money) for crucial story elements
Aunt May should have told Goblin to "Get away from my boy!".... proper Ripley moment. That would've been badass.
