I feel like in Spider-Verse, Japanese Spider-Man will definitely be considered/used as a joke throughout most of the film, he's gonna appear to be the weakest Spider-Man especially if they show scenes of how slow he travels and enemies comically flipping over when fighting him. Then towards the end a massive monster/threat turns up and no-one has any idea how to take it on. Cue Japanese Spider-Man summoning Leopardon, beating the monster in the best action sequence in the film and earning the respect he deserves from the other Spiders!
He's one of the most OP spiderman out there and I'm not even kidding. Like the discard the fact he has a giant robot with a sword that oneshot everything. His spider sense alone has the range of 50km that can be activated at will. His blood is so potent it's a healing factor that can be transfuse to other people, which can give him immunity to poison specifically designed to kill him. He also use a machine gun
@@lynnusuk2092im still in absolute awe to the fact that they make it canon that sword vigor can one shot anything despite the fact that the reason behind is it because the suit got stolen very early in the show
I remember growing up with Stan Lee's Spider-man and constantly wondering "Where are the talking spiders? Where is the giant mecha suit?" Now I know. They were in Japan.
Just a little bit of clarification: Super Sentai was going for a few years before Japanese Spider-Man. It was specifically the giant robot part of the formula that it inspired. Also worth noting is that the beak dudes bear a striking resemblance to the Shocker mooks from Kamen Rider.
I love that you actually watched this gem , most of people when talking about japanese Spider-Man usually just repeat a bunch of wiki and pretend that knows every thing
Japanese spiderman honestly looks like an amazing show. I was a huge fan of Batman '67 back in the day, and just must have missed this... I would have loved it. Something to go back and watch now, I guess! :)
I’m never here this early so I thought I’d remind you guys to watch Snake Eyes for the podcast next week. I know they missed it a couple times but this is finally the week they do it. I've been banking them up. When they talk about it next week I'll have to watch it four times in a row, I think. Good thing they're getting it out of the way before that would have become physically hazardous.
Who else felt their heart drop as soon as Mason said Toei? I really hope they don’t kill this video with bs copyright claims like they did to like 150 of TotallyNotMark’s videos.
I love how this Caravan of Garbage series has just evolved, or devolved into a whatever thing you guys feel like doing. Loved seeing this review. This was my first comic expo bootleg purchase and it was totally worth it. Can't wait to see your Animatrix review. Ben, you're an absolute gem.
If it wasn't for the Live Action TV Series of the Incredible Hulk that was happening at the same time I would have been interested in seeing how Japan made a show based on the Hulk. Every time he got angry, he would have become 100 foot tall and smashed giant robots, I guess.
8:20 Can we talk about the fact that the japanese spider man took the time to make a different mask to convey spider mans anger? Seriously why did it take american filmmakers 40 years to have an expressive spider man mask?!?!
It's amazing to think that Shinji Todō is one of the oldest actors to ever portray Spider-Man. If he does show up in the next Spider-Verse movie, I'll be sorely disappointed if he isn't referred to as "Spider Sensei".
Mason is totally right, the toy was somewhat designed independently from the show, that was a common practice in the industry at the time. One of the most famous cases of it was when Yoshiyuki Tomino (creator of Gundam) took an already designed toy that just looked like a transforming firetruck and then made show with it about a lovecraftian-like existential cosmic horror, apocalyptic robot-weapon, cold war’s nuclear deterrence allegory war drama story. Good stuff all around.
Another fun fact; the Third Marvel character they licensed out was Hela from the Thor comics. She was the villain for two Super Sentai series in a row. Her actress, Machigo Soga, would return to the series as Bandora in Zyuranger, better known as Rita Repulsa in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
I’ve been looking forward to this all week and it did not disappoint. I love how loosely they adapted spiderman and were really just riffing and keeping it fun. Honestly some of the changes kind of work, like his father investigating the ship landing before he dies and his girlfriend’s boss also being one of the villains, as opposed to Jameson just ruining spidey’s reputation. So much charm and creativity behind this when it could’ve easily been another terrible failed pilot like Dr Strange, Nick Fury, or one of the x men related shows Maybe give the animated MTV series a look next
His catchphrase is hilarious, because it’s different in every single episode until later on. Like he’s always trying out new lines. Then he finally lands on his favorite.
This is legitimately my favorite Spider-Man. I was never really into superheroes like the normal Spider-Man. But when kaiju and mecha get involved I start getting hype.
I remember reading the Ready Player One book (this was long before the movie) and being so surprised that Leopardon (Japanese Spider-Man’s Robot) showed up in the final battle. Unfortunately we only got the Gundam and Mechagodzilla in the film. All 5 main heroes in the book get their own mech suit things and Leopardon and the Gundam were the two most recognizable. Also in the film, the Iron Giant is there to replace Ultra Man as the rights to that character were tied up between two companies at the time of production.
Reminds me how Disney now owns Leopardon. Which makes me sad to an extent since we never got him fighting Mechagodzilla. And Marvel missed an opportunity to have Japanese Spider-Man crossover with Ultraman in their Ultraman comics.
@@AlonzoTompkins Absolutely, Disney is also probably the reason there was no Star Wars stuff in the film considering some of that also played a role in the book. Disney irritates me with the way they handle IPs a lot of the time.
@@AlonzoTompkins Disney does not own Leopardon, Toei still owns that design. That's why they can sell toys of it but can't do the same for Spider-Man without Marvel's permission. Marvel doesn't own Ultraman either, they're borrowing the IP from Tsuburaya. So the Marvel Ultraman comics can only use characters from that franchise, and cannot crossover with any other Marvel property. You'll never see Ultraman crossover with Japanese Spider-Man, because one is owned by Tsuburaya and the other by Toei, and the two are rival companies.
Never said they owned Ultraman. Lol Just saying it’s a missed opportunity to use Leopardon and Japanese Spider-Man in stuff like a variant cover or something. Small little crossover stuff for publicity
Jigoku kara no shisha, Supaidaman fans! *three angles of the same shot* By the way, for all you meme lords, this is where the second half of the "You're too late, Spider-Man" meme comes from.
I watched the marvel 618 episode on this show and the actor seemed so sweet and genuinely appreciative and happy to have been involved in the Marvel and Spider-Man universe… if they don’t include him as the voice actor in Across the Spider-Verse it will be a real shame. He truly deserves it as both a lost member - and fan of - the series.
I know this isn’t a funny comment, but these videos have kept me sane for the last year of my life. My mother and my fiancée both have cancer and it’s been difficult to find enjoyment in general. James and Mason always deliver though
I know Spiders, Cobras and Bats usually end up being used by villains in most Tokusatsu, especially Kamen Rider. Maybe that's why Leopardon ended up being not spider theme
I was very disappointed by the Japanese Spiderman's usage in the Spider-verse comic. What they showed was pretty much all of it : he jumps in Leopardon and the villain just kills him immediately. What a waste. Also, either I'm having a fever dream and confusing this with Italian Spiderman, or you apparently didn't get to the scene where some evil lady pulls off his mask, but there's another one underneath. And then again and again. Parker could learn a thing or two from this guy.
There is actually another Japanese Spider-Man. He's from a Manga from the 70's and is so stupidly grim dark and unnecessarily bleak you'd swear it was an edgy, 90's 'realistic' remake.
A little correction: Super Sentai already existed before this version of Spider- Man and its' protagonists did have superpowers, so they were actual superheroes and not just costumed pilots. They also didn't have giant robots or monsters, they got introduced later in the third season of Super Sentai called Battle Fever J (a japanese adaptation of Captain America, as it turns out) after the success of this show.
Well at the time when Battle Fever came out, Gorenger and JAKQ weren't considered part of at l Super Sentai; they were retroactively made part of the franchise later.
The first 2 seasons ,Gorenger and JAKQ, weren’t officially considered part of the Super Sentai Series until 1995. Before that, Battle Fever J was the first Super Sentai.
@@A_VeryIdea Goranger was always intended to be the first Sentai show. You can find official press photos from as early as 1981 that show Goranger as the first Sentai. Goranger and JAKQ were temporarily removed from the series in 1988 due to copyright issues with Shotaro Ishinomori's estate. Said issues were resolved in 1995 and they were then reinstated.
I know that first two seasons weren't considered to be a part of the franchise for some time, it's just the way it was worded, it sounded like as if Tokusatsu Spider-Man lead to the creation of the Super Sentai series, which, in some ways, is accurate but is also not correct.
All jokes aside, I genuinely love seeing Spider-Man scuttle about. Something about it just seems fitting and i truly wish they included it in modern Spider-Man movies.
Yo it'd be cool if you guys cover shows like the showa ultraman and just witness how bonkers it was. Fun for people who are familliar to ultraman to see ur reactions and people from an outsider perspective seeing how crazy it is in ur view
Coming in calling himself "Emissary from hell" and the like, I could see him and Spider-man Noir having some great interactions in the next Spider-verse movie.
Leopardon toys were actually released in America as part of the Shogun Warriors toyline, which consisted of various imported Japanese robot toys. Marvel published a comic based on this toyline, but only licensed three of the robots, and Leopardon was not among them.
6:20 not directly, youre kind of right since Goranger and JAKQ werent considered super sentai at the time, but its better to say its directly responsible for the Megazords. Edit: Nice a Kamen Rider mention!
As a kid growing up in Mexico there was a Spanish broadcast of this show, and I ate it up. It was so much fun and I'm really glad that it's had a resurgence
This might sound weird, and I have done precisely zero research into this, but I strongly suspect the change in origin is an echo of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japanese kaiju movies are invariably commentaries on nuclear weapons and their use. I can't remember who said it, but the saying goes, "I'm America, radiation creates superheroes. In Japan, it creates monsters." This could explain why they didn't want their protagonist gain his powers from a radioactive spider.
It's so hilarious how the two Japanese spidermen are utterly polar opposites in every way Toku Spiderman (1978) is zany, wild breakneck superhero giant robot nonsense and Manga Spiderman (1970) is the darkest, R rated depression-fest possible HOW?!
I actually thing the full lyrics of the opening theme do fit Spider-Man since it talks about how strange it is for a young man to give up all of his desires for the sake of being a hero.
About Supaidaman and Super Sentai - Super Sentai actually came first, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger debuted in 1975 while Supaidaman debuted in 1978, but it is true that Supaidaman introduced the concept of the transforming mecha, as the first Sentai had just motorcycles the same way Kamen Rider had and the J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai had a car. Battle Fever J, the third series (which was also in collaboration with Marvel, as mentioned, and initially intended to be called "Captain Japan" and be about a Japanese hero collaborating with heroes from around the globe) was the first Super Sentai show to introduce the mechas, in 1979.
"part of the deal that MARVEL made with Toei was that could adapt any of MARVEL's characters as mentioned." So what that tells me is that this should could have featured *any* of the original Spider-Man villians and plots that would have gone great with tokusatsu film, i.e. Sandman or Lizard, but instead went with rubbery monster suits every time. Could you imagine if Dr Octopus in place of Professor Monster or Green Goblin making an apperence.
Hopefully you guys will look at Marvel’s other attempts at localizing their characters in Japan, like the Spider-Man (which was more accurate at first), Captain America, and the Hulk manga
The Marvel 616 documentary made me fall completely in love with everything going on in this bonkers show, but I'm so scared to actually watch it, because there is no way its as good as it is in my mind.
Super Sentai actually existed before this show, but as an extension of the espionage-and-cool-vehicles trend of the sixties. After Supaidaman brought up the idea, the Sentai series got its first giant robot in Battle Fever J, but there were two whole Sentai shows that just had cool cars and such! Edit: Today I learned some trivia about Battle Fever J that I wasn't expecting. It was *what*???
You know, every Ghost Rider gets their trademark hellfire burning vehicle. I think a 70's era giant transforming robot would have been one hell of a Ghost Rider mount.
If you read Ready Player One. Parcival is given a choice of any giant robot after finding one of the keys. All the good one's are taken, so he chooses Leopardon. All those Iron Giant scenes in the movie are supposed to be Leopardon.
Battle Fever J was originally conceived as a sort of "Team of Captain Americas of the world" with a 'Captain Japan' in charge. Eventually the team because Battle Japan, Battle France, Battle Cossack, Battle Kenya and Miss America (who is also a character in Marvel comics I believe??). Battle Fever J is BONKERS and I urge you to watch a couple episodes... at least until the giant robot is eventually introduced a few episodes in (it has a nice buildup to it honestly). TOEI and Marvel would then go on to produce Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan, a show Stan Lee wanted to bring the US but couldn't convince anyone to do so. After that the two companies parted ways and TOEI just kept making Super Sentai show until... well... now. And at least until next year. ZENRYOKU ZENKAI!
In al honesty, the in-costume action scenes didn’t look all too bad. They actually look better than what was on the NA live-action series. The colors on the costume popped. The choreography was good, for the time. Too bad about all the big robot crap.
Great stuff. Hilarious observation that it's the Ghost Rider origin lol. If you want to see more documentary style stuff on Japanese Spider-Man, see the beginning of the Power Rangers episode of the Toys that Made Us on Netflix, and also on Disney+ as they mentioned the first episode of the Marvel 616 documentary series is all about it.
14:41 Actually Battle Fever J just had a female character called "Miss America" (a lesser-known patriotic superheroine who was just on the same team as Captain America for a while), but it's an easy mistake to make. They also had the character "Battle Kenya" (the guy in the cat-themed suit) whose civilian identity was a rip-off of Tarzan - I wonder if the Japanese company behind this knew about the Black Panther?
Toei better be hired to make a modern tokusatsu Spider-Man. Though marvel would need to pay the high costs of japan not allowing customized vehicles anymore without high fees. Also give us a blu-ray release of the toku spider-man!
"so you wanna be spider man? First, ur going to need to learn Japanese." Actor" what?! I thought petter was a New Yorker" Producer" u'll never be spider man with that attitude."
Stan Lee was so ahead of his time that he aproved Supaidaman only beacause he knew that when Leopardon showed up in SpiderVerse and SpiderGeddon it would be one of the greatest moments in comic book history.
I'm not going to lie I prefer Japanese superheroes to the West. Stuff like Ultraman. If you like to the show Ultraman is great watch(also it depends on what Ultraman series you watch)

Well, in the comic spiderverse, they found japanese Spiderman, and they repair and improve leopardon
You almost described Spider Pig's arc in one of the spiderverse stuff.
Leopardon is literally a godslayer for some reason in the Spiderverse canon, even before the upgrades.
🤣🤣
The absolute cohesion and fluidness on this channel is second to none

You can find it on most streaming platforms from just 3.99! Then you can tune in to The Weekly Planet podcast this Monday December 20 2021 and hear. James and Maso’s thoughts on Hasbro’s Snake Eyes
Two snake guys watching snake eyes for the December 20th 2021 episode of The Weekly Planet!?
Yeah Snake Eyes next week
I've been banking them up. When they talk about it next week I'll have to watch it four times in a row, I think. Good thing they're getting it out of the way before that would have become physically hazardous.
Nice!!!!
Yes they promised to do it for real next week
Who else felt their heart drop as soon as Mason said Toei? I really hope they don’t kill this video with bs copyright claims like they did to like 150 of TotallyNotMark’s videos.
I love how this Caravan of Garbage series has just evolved, or devolved into a whatever thing you guys feel like doing. Loved seeing this review. This was my first comic expo bootleg purchase and it was totally worth it. Can't wait to see your Animatrix review. Ben, you're an absolute gem.
I love Tokusatsu shows! It’s funny that people think this is crazy. I was like “Yeah, sounds like a normal Tokusatsu show.”
If it wasn't for the Live Action TV Series of the Incredible Hulk that was happening at the same time I would have been interested in seeing how Japan made a show based on the Hulk.
Every time he got angry, he would have become 100 foot tall and smashed giant robots, I guess.
God, I'd love to see that show.
If japan bought the rights for hulk back in the 70s/80s, he would've 100% fought godzilla in a kaiju movie
and gets a crossover with Ultraman
@@magnumbreakz there’s so many unreleased and released movies in that world like terminator vs Godzilla that got cancelled
I really respect the nod to Mark's recent copyright problems with Toei.
I missed this, when was it? Unless this is a bad joke that went over my head.
What happened to poor Mark certainly seemed like a bad joke.
@@CrowTRobot it's @18:20

Can we talk about the fact that the japanese spider man took the time to make a different mask to convey spider mans anger? Seriously why did it take american filmmakers 40 years to have an expressive spider man mask?!?!
“Eye that flash with anger” he wasn’t lying.
This was unexpectedly very wholesome. I loved how happy Shinji Todo (Supaidaman) was when they told him Stan Lee liked the show.
I personally would love to see some scuttling in No Way Home.
Bandora actress is Machiko Soga...
@@1eyeddevil929 I got the name wrong, my bad. But it is the same actress.
I really hope they get Shinji Todo back to voice Takuya in Across the Spider-Verse, and just have all his dialogue subtitled
So much charm and creativity behind this when it could’ve easily been another terrible failed pilot like Dr Strange, Nick Fury, or one of the x men related shows
Maybe give the animated MTV series a look next
His catchphrase is hilarious, because it’s different in every single episode until later on. Like he’s always trying out new lines. Then he finally lands on his favorite.
Supaidaman is going to blow people’s minds when he shows up in AtM. Such a weird and unique version of the character.
Lol
Just saying it’s a missed opportunity to use Leopardon and Japanese Spider-Man in stuff like a variant cover or something. Small little crossover stuff for publicity
“We only got Gundam” as if the moment wasn’t hyped af.
Jigoku kara no shisha, Supaidaman fans!
*three angles of the same shot*
By the way, for all you meme lords, this is where the second half of the "You're too late, Spider-Man" meme comes from.
6:35 The Iron Cross Army looks like a bunch of Nosepass Pokémon randomly grew humanoid bodies and decided to fight Spiderman.
To be fair he does come back afterwards
There is actually another Japanese Spider-Man. He's from a Manga from the 70's and is so stupidly grim dark and unnecessarily bleak you'd swear it was an edgy, 90's 'realistic' remake.
Probably had some Skullman influences.
Showa Ultraman are so fucking batshit insane like after Ultraseven all entry are just so crazy, and so fucking fun lmao
american spider-man: “Friendly neighborhood spiderman :3”
Japanese spider-man: “I’m an emissary from hell”
I would love it if he plays Japanese Spider-Man again, that would be awesome
Coming in calling himself "Emissary from hell" and the like, I could see him and Spider-man Noir having some great interactions in the next Spider-verse movie.
Leopardon toys were actually released in America as part of the Shogun Warriors toyline, which consisted of various imported Japanese robot toys. Marvel published a comic based on this toyline, but only licensed three of the robots, and Leopardon was not among them.
hearing james say the words "kamen rider" is something that finally have happened and I am so happy it did

6:20 not directly, youre kind of right since Goranger and JAKQ werent considered super sentai at the time, but its better to say its directly responsible for the Megazords.
Edit: Nice a Kamen Rider mention!
I checked this out a while back out of shear curiosity, and ended up getting hooked and watching the full run. It was a lot of fun.
This isn't garbage, this is heaven packaged and gifted to us
As a kid growing up in Mexico there was a Spanish broadcast of this show, and I ate it up.
It's so hilarious how the two Japanese spidermen are utterly polar opposites in every way
Toku Spiderman (1978) is zany, wild breakneck superhero giant robot nonsense and Manga Spiderman (1970) is the darkest, R rated depression-fest possible
HOW?!
Cause Japan
I actually thing the full lyrics of the opening theme do fit Spider-Man since it talks about how strange it is for a young man to give up all of his desires for the sake of being a hero.
I hope this means that eventually you'll also do Italian spiderman, that is truly a glorious one

They could’ve made scorpion his anime rival
Hopefully you guys will look at Marvel’s other attempts at localizing their characters in Japan, like the Spider-Man (which was more accurate at first), Captain America, and the Hulk manga
Roach Dogg Jr.! Fancy meeting you here.
Shinji Todo looks so excited to be talking about that one weird show he did ages ago.
3:34 "You've gone native, Gene!" I literally had to pause the video here, I was laughing so hard lol
I would 1000% watch a sentai Spiderverse movie or show.
The Marvel 616 documentary made me fall completely in love with everything going on in this bonkers show, but I'm so scared to actually watch it, because there is no way its as good as it is in my mind.
Lol yeah, the Spidergeddon comic made me appreciate that Supaidaman exists, but didn't tempt me to watch it.
This show is actually surprisingly fun and has a ton of heart. It's all on RUclips and strongly recommend watching it
Super Sentai actually existed before this show, but as an extension of the espionage-and-cool-vehicles trend of the sixties. After Supaidaman brought up the idea, the Sentai series got its first giant robot in Battle Fever J, but there were two whole Sentai shows that just had cool cars and such!
Edit: Today I learned some trivia about Battle Fever J that I wasn't expecting. It was *what*???
Is this what Italian Spiderman was a parody of? It even ends in a quarry!
Fun fact, most of the footage comes from the Disney Plus documentary show Marvel's 616 which is now delisted and not available legally anywhere.
That IS fun
If you're a superhero come to Japan and get a free giant robot.
What a brilliant sales pitch.
I’m partial to the GP-7.
More businesses should incentivize promotions with a free GP-7
Would love to see James and Mason talk about Kamen Rider. Would be absolutely bonkers.
"With Great power..
comes a giant cat robot"
Japanese Spider-Man has a special place in my heart, just like Italian Spider-Man.
This is GOLD mates!
I love this Spider-Man so thank you for doing this. You’ve made my day (as you always do when you release ANYTHING!).
When they said that his mentor dies, becomes a spider that gives him advice and then the spider proceeds to die, I burst out laughing 😂
In al honesty, the in-costume action scenes didn’t look all too bad. They actually look better than what was on the NA live-action series. The colors on the costume popped. The choreography was good, for the time. Too bad about all the big robot crap.
9:22 Ah yes, the highly revered Japanese Steve Buscemi.
“What happens on the island, STAYS ON THAT ISLAND” - the board after watching 1 episode
Oh my gosh!! YES!! I love Japanese Spider-Man, as weird and crazy as it is; it would be the funniest thing ever if he showed up in No Way Home.
Toei better be hired to make a modern tokusatsu Spider-Man. Though marvel would need to pay the high costs of japan not allowing customized vehicles anymore without high fees. Also give us a blu-ray release of the toku spider-man!
"so you wanna be spider man?
First, ur going to need to learn Japanese."
Actor" what?! I thought petter was a New Yorker"
Producer" u'll never be spider man with that attitude."
Stan Lee was so ahead of his time that he aproved Supaidaman only beacause he knew that when Leopardon showed up in SpiderVerse and SpiderGeddon it would be one of the greatest moments in comic book history.
Dear editor: the Armageddon anime reaction killed me. Thank you for getting pranked by these couple of pranksters.
Now do Italian spiderman.
Infinite universes you know, soon he will be canon.
Marvel: Japanese Spider-Man got a Megazord and some Ghost Rider origin, what you got?
DC: Batman was turned into a baby and raised by the Joker
