In 1978, aged 14 I got a Saturday job in Liverpool. I was paid £5 a day and saved for 4 weeks to buy a pair of Stan Smith’s. I thought I was the boss in those shoes. As I’m 60 in a few months, maybe I should buy my second pair of Stan Smith.
Hi Dustin. I live in Japan and I didn't know about velostansmith until I saw this video. I bought it immediately after watching this video at adidas online store. Thank you!
@@EverythingsBeenDone I received them today and tried them on right away, but I feel that the thick rubber band that wraps around the instep could be cut off, what do you think?
I have a pair of velosambas as well. It's been my go-to cycling shoe except for longer rides in winter, in which case I have another pair. I've been using them to commute, wearing them all day long (working at a desk in a public administration), for bikepacking, and summer rides. Once they are broken in, they're very comfortable
Velosambas are sold as city commuter while I done weeks long bike trips in them 😅 Thanks for the review, looking to pick a stanvelo as a second pair for those rainier commutes when the shoe gets absolutely soaked.
Honestly, on how both of them are looking, The Stan Smith Velo looks like it’s gonna be better for wide foot people, and the Velo Samba for the narrow ones. The SS looks like it has a rounded toe, while the VS has a pointed toe one. I might be wrong, I don’t own any of the shoes, wanted one for the longest but haven’t really committed to ‘em yet.
I've been using the Velosambas for about 2 months. On short rides it's pretty nice and I love the way it looks, but it's a little too narrow for me. And knowing how they fit and feel now, I'd go with the Smiths. At the end of the day comfort is king.
5 10 trailcross clips are better than either. More ventilation dry super fast and look like approach shoes. Function I've style unless you are cycling for coffee. Have the samba and the 5 10 the samba stayed home on the 1000 mile touring trip for a reason
I definitely want to get one of these. I love two bolt cleats, and these models look better than the cycling-walking shoes I've had. Thanks for this video; I think it's one of your best. It's informative and funny.
Been working in a bike shop with the White/blue VSamba's . They clean relatively easy-honestly they are great though one nag is that they do get hot. The Cold RDY version is of course even toastier.
As a former tennis player (public parks, not country clubs) who rocked the original Stan Smiths, I'd have to go with the Velo Stans -- classic. The Sambas never did it for me.
I was a kid in the 70’s when brands like Adidas, Nike, Puma etc we’re just starting to be used as casual wear “sneakers,” off the tracks and courts and these are a nice flashback….. these are definitely what I’d go with!
I got the Samba on the back when you highlighted the shoes,a while ago, still rocking them in black, the white Stan is a shade too bright for my street cred😂!!
Kind of!!, I rotate with a pair of Scott 90's MTB shoe, very comfortable and repaired many times, but the Samba is broken in and will be my urban and road shoe for years to come, more since I run winter boots for 6 months 😅
I think design and performance are no issue with these shoes but longevity is. As always, Adidas uses their almost loose-grain leather covered with a thick layer of plastic which will make this shoe wear faster than a traditional, half decently constructed cycling shoe like the Shimano AM5 or AM7. Do they look dope? Hell yeah, will they last any significant amount of time? Probably not.
Thanks for the info. Been wanting a casual shoe for SPD. Wonder if you could do a vid that shows how to do a diy cleat shoe. I Imagine a gator skin brogue with cleats. That would be a hellish magic I’d want to see.
I love the samba, but the velosamba sucked! Super uncomfortable at 20 miles or over. Walking in them was too stiff, also. Typically, something that comes in between a cycling shoe and a casual sneaker to walk in, is neither and fails imo
I love my velosamba but ONLY for short rides. In socal they just run too hot. I’m now running cages with regular sambas as my everyday setup for commuting.
See, I disagree - at least riding in the PNW, I can do 30-40 mile rides with the velosamba easy, while also comfortably standing for 8 hours as a barista.
The Stan looks very reminiscent of the Dunlop Green Flash. White is a lousy colour, though the reflective is a nice touch, but sticking 3M reflective tape onto the back of any shoe will make you more visible to motorised traffic. I’ll stick to my Keen Newport sandals (Mar-Oct), super grippy on my flat Wellgo BU087 pedals, the reflectors took a holiday some time ago, though they are replaceable. Though today I was wearing TNF GTX Hedgehogs.
Hello Dustin, i have a question ( not related to this video) if you don't mind ? I remember watching an older video of yours where you mention " the sweet spot" refering to a particular tyre width for gravel biking... I just can't find this video anymore. Could you please tell me what's your favourite width for a 700c wheel /tyre ? I think it was 40 or 45 mm but I'm not sure anymore. Greetings from Belgium
Idk about these. I’m about the performance, so I’m thinking the commitment to the original style will yield a shoe that doesn’t have the fit I want on the bike. Shimano xc7 for clipless, Spesh 2FO for flats
Great review, thanks, I’ve had the velo sambas for a couple years now, and they have held up extremely well, although a little on the heavy side. How do the stans compare weight wise? Thanks Dustin. Keep up the good work man 🤟🤟
I have a size us13 velosamba and it feels like the cleat cutout is centered instead of justified towards the middle. Shoes almost rub the crank even when the cleat is as close to the center as possible. Do you know how the cleat cutouts on these scale for larger sizes?
i have the velosamba and althought i love them-the toe box is just not wide enough for me and my feet just cant do it for long periods of time. For the Velostan- is the toe box wider?
I know exactly what your talking about. I keep thinking the Velosambas as I have will loosen up in the Toebox but they haven't quite really. This Velo Stan Smith on the other hand. Did not pinch my toes the way the sambas do obviously everybody's foot is different but if you had to pick between the two, the stands would be the way to go for a roomier toe box
i will usually pick a heavier, more comfortable shoe. I have had super light weight running shoes, but they die fast. Ultimate problem is I have a wide (2E) foot and finding quality shoes is limited.
right now im commuting with flats and a folding bicycle because trains ban normal bikes during peak hours or demand an extra ticket for them. my go to shoe rn is just a normal rebook sneaker.
not from adidas and unlikely to happen due to the nature of the cleats themselves -- 3 bolt cleats are inherently going to stick out. that being said, i would recommend just switching to spd anyway as the power transfer is nearly identical and they are just so much better any moment you aren't clipped in
I've been curious about this style of shoe when I was shopping for cleats. I got a pair of the shimano cheapies that work well, but they are dorky when I am riding long haul and stop for a snack, or in the grocery store, etc. The cleat grinds a bit on concrete. I wished they were more tennis shoe like. I also have a pair of Adidas FIVETEN mountain bike shoes I wear when trail riding in the woods, and they are also awesome shoes. They have a super soft grippy bottom full of circles like these you showed here, just minus the cleat mounts. (they're for flat spikey mountain bike pedals).
