He was the perfect voice for Stu Pickles. He just had the right "dad" voice that fit the character so well.
His comedic tone with his voice was also perfect for a whacky inventor
I was lucky to work with Jack Riley once on a commercial. A nice person and a truly great comedic actor.
Did you really???
Wow what an honor
Like many people, I first knew about Jack Riley from him playing Stu Pickles on Rugrats all those years ago. He was great as Elliott Carlin on Newhart, and he also made a legendary appearance on Rowan and Martins Laugh In, where he did a memorable appearance impersonating Lyndon B. Johnson. I miss Jack Riley very much. ❤
This is gonna put Pickle's Toys on the map!
Jack Riley had the perfect "every man" demeanor, combined with hilarious downbeat fatalism. He added the perfect touch to The Bob Newhart Show. I loved him.
Absolutely love Jack Riley such a wonderful actor!
Visited with him often at Farmer's Market. He will be greatly missed. RIP ...Good person, great comedian!
Thank you for sharing! He seemed like a fascinating guy (and of course a wonderful actor). When did you know him?
I’ll really miss him as both Stu Pickles and the male voiceover for the Country Crocker commercials.
I was a kid when I first saw those commercials, I vividly remember saying to my parents “that’s Tommy’s dad!” I think that was the first time in my life I realized what a voice actor was.
Def One of a KIND - No One was quite like him !
Wow - that last quip is a stunner. Perfect comedic timing & delivery! RIP JR
Im glad you mentioned Country Crock. We always figured he was showing Carlin's secret warm side.
When he came on the scene with the Bob Newhart show as Elliot Carlin we then had a double dose of Carlins George and Elliot😆!
I grew up on the Rugrats & he did a good job voicing Stu Pickles
He was one of the best side characters ever!
Excellent Tribute! MGBY Jack Riley and Thanks for all the Great Laughs 🤣
And don’t forget those hilarious Comp USA radio commercials. He, along with the guy who played the interviewer, were the funniest thing on radio.
Thanks. I was a massive Jack Riley fan since his Mr Carlin days. I particularly love his interplay with Mr Peterson - such as when they got drunk together, Peterson slept on his couch - and then Carlin sobered up and wanted to charge him rent. Great, great, great character and performances.
Before Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger, there was Jack Riley as Mr. Fru Fru. RIP - great vid mate!
Knowing that he had such a hilarious and awesome career outside of my favourite childhood show, warms my cold, dead heart. RIP
Love this dude....
than marry him
My favorite exchange between Jerry and Carlin on The Bob Newhart Show:
Carlin: "How's your choppers?"
Jerry: "How's your head?"
So many comedic talents whose works go unnoticed due to being more known for performances behind the camera.
I can't believe I never noticed that was him in that Seinfeld episode!
Very well done video, didn't know he was the voice of the country crock guy. And missed him in Seinfeld, glad you were able to compile all those clips and pay respect to a funny guy.
Country Crock commercials too. I'm not sure how many actors get a second act as voice actors playing someone half their age, His Country Crock character seemed so much like Stu Pickles, that I thought he was in his late 20's or early 30's at the time.
It depends on the condition of their voice.
I never knew that was Jack Riley doing the country crock commercials until now
❤ that man
He also sang in the Pasadena Playhouse production of Richard Rodgers & Stephen Sondheim's musical DO I HEAR A WALTZ? He doesn't have a stand-alone solo or bit, but you can definitely hear him in the ensemble pieces! The cast album is available on cd, BTW.
Thank you! I'll have to look that up
Mr Carlin was the best foil for Dr Hartley. But I didn't know Jack Riley was the voice over for Country Crock spread.
Jack Riley looks like Steve Martin
Jack Riley was on The Mort Sahl Show, too.
Bob (drunk): What do you want, Mr. Carlin?
Carlin (equally drunk): I'll get sweet and sour shrimp.
Bob: MAKE UP YOUR MIND, MR. CARLIN!
🤣
@kali3665 That's from one of my favorite episodes! If I remember right it was Thanksgiving and Emily was out of town so the guys got together to watch football. They all got drunk, burnt the turkey and ordered a ton of Chinese food.
@@laudanum669 Emily: "Bob, why's the oven on?"
Bob (trying to remember): "The turkey!"
Emily (opening the oven): "There's no turkey in here!"
Bob (remembering): "Whatever you do, don't open the dishwasher!"
🤣🤣🤣
Jack was at his best on the Bob Newhart Show
he was hilarious on the Bob Newhart show , knew how to make a joke & keep a straight face
I just now realized how similar Jack Riley and Phil Hartman were.
carlin was great
I'm surprised Jack Riley wasn't in the obituaries pages of the 2017 World Almanac. I predicted he would be in there because of fellow Rugrats voice actor David Doyle and fellow Bob Newhart Show actress Marcia Wallace.
Stu Pickles and Bernard The Bernard The Mouse
Royal. Kung Fu. The Gunman.
I love his voice but didn't expect him to look like that. I expected David Duchovny? Is that weird?
Right, he sounded “young”
Idk why but to me Jack Riley as he got older looked like Bill Nye.
Thanks for this. I just watched the Bob Newhard show and got to wondering about the actor who played Mr. Carlin. I never knew he was in so many TV shows.
This is me in al anon.....
Jack Riley, the blancmange impersonator and cannibal? I didn’t know he went into show business.
Everybody over hypes the Freemans, Blacks, Pratts, Swifts, and Reeves so often they take for granted the Dillers, Keaches, Bennetts, Moroffs, Rosses, Molls, Taylors, Arnolds, Rileys, and Colemans. Whatever happened to a steady of diet giving everybody a chance?
