Kordell would finish the season with 32 total TD (21 pass & 11 rush) against 17 INT. It would be his first & full impressive season, but it would also mark the final season with Yancey Thigpen & OC Chan Gailey!
His play would partially lay the grounds for modern day NFL athletes.

I always felt Kordell got a lot of unwarranted hate. The man played his heart out, and put our Steelers in amazing position more than once to win it all. It’s so sad the team could never capitalize on those opportunities. Anyway, videos like this are awesome! Get to relive a little bit of my childhood. Thank you so much for this!

Not any shame on him. He was the trailblazer who permitted guys like a Mike Vick and Lamar Jackson could be #1 or first round picks. He showed the league what you could use a player like him for. Stewart name is etched in NFL history. I do wish he would've been able to player longer. But he played in the right era to give an unborn Lamar a shot to be an MVP.

Doubt he'd be a first rounder. Kordell was a great athlete but outside of his first couple of years, he wasn't really the dynamic athletic QB like a Vick or Lamar. Also, Kordell just didn't have it above the shoulders. The Steelers had to dumb down the offense for him. Kordell gets a lot of unwarranted hate but he was far from the trailblazing QB for guys of this era. Cunningham led the way in the 80s but it was really Vick who blazed the way for the QBd if today.

He'd be what Lamar Jackson is if he played today. The league was just different back then. Offenses weren't as complex, defenses were tougher in the secondary, you really had to have elite passing ability to be a great passer. He was good enough a lot of the time, but never great. He certainly had the playmaking ability though. And in this day and age, that play making ability would be much more valuable. Jackson reminds me a lot of what Slash would have been in he was playing today.

I believe his inflexibility with Stewart hurt the team because Stewart was 1996 Lamar Jackson & should have more time. Instead he was treated like a square peg being shoved into a round hole. Like you said, Cowher had a Ferrari in some of those teams.

    • @boredom2go

@@r.williamcomm7693 I don't think Cowher should be in the Hall of Fame. His coaching career is just slightly better than Jeff Fisher's, and there's no way Fisher should even be considered. Longevity and regular season above-averageness is not Hall-worthy.
It sets a very awkward precedent too. Are they going to not put Tomlin in the Hall? His resume is exactly the same as Cowher's. Unless Tomlin wins more in the postseason he shouldn't even make it on the ballot, but there's no way they can't induct a black coach with the same exact resume as his white predecessor.

my first year i played fantasy football and selected a statistically fading dan marino with my first round pick, 2nd to last pick of the round and was basically bidding against myself and after picking him just said $40.00 and the guy who had the last pick said he wouldn't have bid more than a dollar on marino...well i only ended up starting marino once that year, week 1(because i dropped him on or before stewart's bye week and can't remember who i started that week) and my team took the L during that 1st week(interestingly marino had a pretty solid year in 97, way above his 96 numbers and based on late 90's passing stats had an above average season, 3rd in the nfl in yards passing, 1st in attempts but only 16 td's)...but luckily i drafted kordell as my backup being a steeler and kordell fan and got laughed almost out of the room for the 2nd time that night and he only went on to become the fantasy mvp that year and led my team to a championship, the only time that i have ever won a fantasy league...i also can say that with my last pick i took a little known receiver at the time by the name of T.O. and once again got a few chuckles in the room, because everybody kept talking about j.j. stokes(1st round pick in 95) and that he was the robin to rice's batman...well rice only played 2 games that year and T.O. even though he didn't have an awesome fantasy year based on his later career numbers but well above his rookie numbers and fantasy projections, still led the 49ers in all 3 major receiving categories and was a huge part of my one and only fantasy football glory moment...sorry for the boring story if anybody read this but i wanted to give props to my all time favorite nfl qb, "slash 4 life" and thank him for giving me my one true fantasy football glory moment....PS, i really hate fantasy football and haven't played for over 20 years!!!!

I'd give virtually anything to go back in time to when I was a kid and see Kordell win a Super Bowl.

I really like Kordell as a person and loved him as Slash but he was too much of a headcase to play QB full time. If he made one mistake it just seemed to rattle him and spiral downward for the rest of game. He did have some great moments though and in those moments I loved him!

I remember that game like it was yesterday. I remember that run. "Electric" is an understatement. Imagine having a designed QB run from your own 25 that goes the distance. There had never been anything like that in the NFL. Heck, it's rare now.

I agree. I dont think his passing progressed because of all the Gay talk and a mixed bag of people against him and for him. If everyone woulda just supported him and started to speak out against the rest stop crap, I think he would have been a very good QB.

Looking at these highlights I’ve come to the conclusion this is what Kyle Shanahan had in mind in selecting Trey Lance in the draft. Trey Lance may have some flash in the pan success but Kordell was by far a more accurate passer than Trey. For the record as a Niners fan, I wanted The guy whose gonna win multiple SuperBowls and his name is MAC JONES.

I wish I could go back in time to 1997 til bill cower day and Rooney Hey guys we have a really good team yes but this year we need a tank on purpose we need to finished at last. And here's why we need to get rid of Cordell Stewart and in the 1st overall pick at the 1998 NFL draft draft Peyton Manning. Imagine the steelers having Peyton Manning as QB.

    • @nick56677

If that happened, we'd have never had Ben. Manning wouldn't have lasted long behind those atrocious 2000s offensive lines the steelers had. I'm happy with Ben
