I guess I can be "that guy", for the record I'm not in the military I'm just a nerd.
1. Mav pulls the hook cable up during landing so that it wouldn't attach to the carrier to be able to go-around.
2. When Couger turns his wings in. Yes they do that and are encourage to do so if they feel like they have lost their edge. The military want the best out there at their best.
3. The F-14 did have an issue where in a flat spin (what Mav was is) the canopy would not clear fast enough and got almost caught above the crew. There was actually a pilot, Lt. David J. "Goose" Lortscher, who died in a real F-14 flat spin (that's where goose comes from). Also a stunt pilot, Art Scholl, died while filming that scene because of that (different plane, but he couldn't eject). Later models of the F-14 did correct that issue. And all modern planes account for it as well.
And for extra credit, The "bald guy" is the Commader of the USS Enterprise.
And for more, the bad guys were supposed to be North Korean, hense the star.
Wow I'm a nerd.

@@Umbra314 oh ye, mah bad
An easy mistake to make, otherwise your knowledge of military training protocols is impressive.
The canopy normally does get ejected away, but because of how flat spins work the canopy was shot straight up instead of getting ripped back by the air, allowing Goose to hit the canopy.
Well actually :):
The f14 Tompcat had a construcktion faliure, that caused such an event in this special case.
@@TheUnimaterLp
According to the F-14 Tomcat Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) flight manual:
“The aircraft is equipped with an automatic electronically sequenced command escape system incorporating two Navy aircrew common ejection seat (SJU-17(V) 3/A (pilot) and SJU-17(V) 4/A (RIO)) rocket-assisted ejection seats.
“Both seats are identical in operation and differ only in nozzle direction of their lateral thrust motors, which provide a divergent ejection trajectory away from the aircraft path.
“When either crewmember initiates the command escape system, the canopy is ballistically jettisoned and each crewmember is ejected in a preset-time sequence. The RIO is ejected to the left and the pilot to the right.
“Safe escape is provided for most combinations of aircraft altitude, speed, attitude and flightpath within an envelope from zero airspeed, zero altitude in a substantially level attitude to a maximum speed of 600 KCAS.”
Chesire continues;
“Normally, within the ejection sequence, the canopy will automatically be blown off before the crews ejection seats fire. With forward airspeed, the canopy will always be well behind the aircraft when the RIO’s ejection seat fires.
“However a flat spin provides a peculiar problem. Because there is no significant forward airspeed in the spin, the canopy is not blown behind the aircraft. Worse, there exists a partial vacuum just above a flat spin aircraft that can capture and hold a canopy in place above the aircraft. So when the RIO ejects, there is a strong chance he will impact the canopy hovering above. This has actually happened in real life.
“To solve this problem, aircrews were advised to jettison the canopy early, and not wait for it in the ejection sequence. This would give a little more time for the canopy to move beyond the aircraft. There was a handle if pulled, would automatically jettison the canopy. This was totally separate from the seat ejection system.”
Basically do your research before you pull out the “uhm akchtually” next time. Also learn how to spell construction lol
If two planes fly close enough together, the radar can show them as one, or won't be able to get a proper lock.
But you need to fly very close, and never break formation.
This is how two Argentinian fighter crews managed to sink a Brit ship with an otherwise good radar and missiles.
I think this is also a limit of the time, but not something that really works anymore due to advances in detection tech.
My dad told me about this he fought for us brits in Falklands and my old teacher as he was a pilot in Falklands told me too
False, at lease if you're referencing the sinking of the HMS Sheffield....
They didn't show up on our RADAR because we were using a communications device to speak to Headquarters in London, this communications device took out the RADAR whenever it was in operation (a pretty glaring flaw, but the Navy had limited budget so it was decided a redesign wasn't necessary as we'd always have other ships around with the RADAR on)
However doubly a problem the Weapons officer was in the toilet (heads) and the Captain was asleep (he'd been up for many hours before) the XO was looking at maps (charts) or something so there was effectively no chain of command, when the alert came in from the others ships it was a Rating (entry level young boy sailor) who realised we were under attack and grabbed the intercom to shout "HANDBRAKE" which was the code word for evasive maneuvers and pop chaff and so on, however the bloody communications were down because we were talking to London and getting new orders... so nobody heard. The first person to see the missile and report it therefore was actually a lookout (which means far too close to the ship to do anything about except shout "BRACE! BRACE! BRACE!" for anyone close enough to hear and lie down and grab something.
Doubly annoying, the missile didn't even function correctly, the French Spies (DGSE) had actually disabled some of the Exocet missiles payloads (somehow, never explained to me) so it didn't actually explode but in another shocking stroke of bad luck it happened to hit (missiles like these aren't really aimed for one location like a tank gunner aiming for a tank ammo rack, you'd pretty much aim middle of the ship and cross your fingers you hit something important) the Damage Control firefighting water main pump, and the fuel was what caught fire, the remaining rocket fuel ignited the aluminium bulkheads, so when we switch on the fire hose to start fighting the fire it sucks water in from the sea but nothing comes out the hose, because it's actually pissing out of the giant hole in the pipe and rushing down into the bottom of the ship, the fire can't be stopped and will melt the ship to the point where the upper decks won't be supported so the ship is taken out with one lucky shot. Even though it will take a while for the fire to actually render the structure of the ship useless and eventually sink.
The abandon ship order is given and we all get into lifeboats. Someone had actually got a copy of Monty Python's Life of Brian which we watched a screening of on the way down a few days before the sinking, so we were all singing "Always look on the bright side of life" as we get into lifeboats, with nobody really sure how many had died in the initial impact or been unable to escape the flooding ship.

here is a random essay about the F-16 Viper, a multirole fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) for the United States Air Force. The F-16 Viper is known for its agility, speed, and advanced capabilities, making it a highly effective aircraft in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
Overview of the F-16 Viper
The F-16 Viper is a single-seat, single-engine aircraft that was first introduced in 1978. It was developed as a lightweight, high-performance fighter aircraft, capable of conducting air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Since its introduction, the F-16 has been used by numerous countries around the world, and it has been continuously upgraded with new technologies and capabilities.
The F-16 Viper is powered by a General Electric F110-GE-129 turbofan engine, which gives it a top speed of over Mach 2. The aircraft has a range of approximately 2,000 miles and a service ceiling of 50,000 feet. The F-16 Viper is also known for its exceptional maneuverability, which is due in part to its lightweight design and advanced fly-by-wire control system.
Design and Capabilities of the F-16 Viper
The F-16 Viper's design and capabilities are a result of its advanced technology and engineering. The aircraft features advanced avionics, including a multi-function display (MFD) and a heads-up display (HUD), which provide the pilot with a detailed view of the surrounding airspace. The MFD and HUD also allow the pilot to control and monitor the aircraft's weapons systems and other key systems.
The F-16 Viper is also equipped with a range of weapons systems. The aircraft has nine external hardpoints, which can hold a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, bombs, and rockets. The F-16 Viper can also carry a 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon, which is mounted internally and can fire up to 6,000 rounds per minute.
Another key feature of the F-16 Viper is its advanced electronic warfare capabilities. The aircraft is equipped with an AN/ALR-56M radar warning receiver, which can detect and locate enemy radar emissions. The F-16 Viper also has an AN/ALQ-131 electronic countermeasure system, which can jam enemy radar systems and disrupt their communications.
Role of the F-16 Viper in Modern Air Combat
The F-16 Viper has played a significant role in modern air combat since its introduction in 1978. The aircraft has been used in a variety of missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, and reconnaissance.
One of the F-16 Viper's most notable combat missions was during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The aircraft was used to conduct numerous air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, including suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) and close air support (CAS) missions. The F-16 Viper's agility and speed made it highly effective in these missions, and it played a significant role in the success of the operation.
The F-16 Viper has also been used in a variety of training exercises and joint operations with other countries. The aircraft has been used to train pilots from numerous countries, and it has been used in joint operations with countries such as Israel and South Korea.
In recent years, the F-16 Viper has been upgraded with new technologies and capabilities, including a new radar system and advanced electronic warfare systems. These upgrades have helped to keep the F-16 Viper a highly effective aircraft in modern air combat, and it is expected to continue to be used by numerous countries around the world for many years to come
Fun fact about this movie, the navy had agreed to fire one missile, so the film crew has cameras on the. wings of the F-14, and there were planes near the F-14 as well to get as many angles of the missile firing. The differient camera angles also confused the navy enough to thretan to take Tony Scott to military court, but after some whitness accounts, it was deemed that only one missile was fired.
It was two missiles actually
the missile knows where it is
@@CasualStrategist It knows this because it knows where it isn't
@@AByteofCode by subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater) it obtains a difference or deviation

1. That wire is technically there but in the shown footage Maverick doesn't has his hook extended out, to catch the wire. So that means, even if he wanted to land on the carrier, he'd just dump his plane in the sea because he's simply too fast.
2. The Canope whilst ejecting is suposed to fly away backwards. It has no propulsion, so it normally does that. But in this case the Jet isn't flying horizontly but instead is falling verticly down. Therefore the Canopy doesn't flew backwards as it is suposed to, but verticly up. In this position it blocked Goose in his way upwards, and therefore breaks his spine.
I keep scrolling comments looking for why Iceman wasn't the one in trouble cause he was flying like an ass and nobody has answered it yet 😭. I've always thought they both should've been at the trial, cause both were involved with the incident and were both potentially liable but of course the protagonist we're supposed to feel bad for is the one in trouble.
@@skrumbobumbo3279 Its' not Ice flying like an ass, it's a glaring technical flaw of the F-14A, which has underpowered and very sensitive Pratt and Whitney engines. The B (delivered the year after Topgun came out.) had General electric engines that had about double the dry thrust and like 25% more power in afterburner and wouldn't have flameouts as readily as Maverick's A model. Also, in the event of a flatspin, the pilot is supposed to jettison the canopy and allow three seconds for it to separate before initiating an ejection.
🤓
@@mikethemaniac1 Ah thats why
Actually, when landing on a ship, they go full throttle, that way if they fail to catch the wire or worse yet, the wire snaps, they have enough speed to take off again without nose diving into the sea

The f14 is considered one of the most capable fighters in the Navy. The f14 that Mav flew was the F14A, which was known to be exposed to compression stalls due to it's TF30 engine. The fan blades on this engine would break free when there was a change in airflow, causing these fighters to fall into flat spins.
The reason why Goose ejected right into the canopy was because the canopy hovered over the fighter as the aircraft fell vertically.

Mav could have throttled up just before touching down to overshoot the wires and go around.
Flat spins are real, and the F-14 was known for them. (Especially with one engine, due to the large change in center of thrust.
If you fly close enough together its theoretically possible to appear as one aircraft. At least with radar from the 1980s.
Not military but I thought standard procedure was to go full throttle on touchdown in case you need to go around again e.g. missed or broken wire. The wire is designed to stop you even on full throttle if you do hook it.

Another fact, if in a plane with more than 4 people, there is a model that will eject each person on a timer so as to prevent them hitting each other. However this has caused individuals to die as they were crashing from a low altitude and didn’t have enough time to eject. I believe a similar thing happened near the naval air station I live by

High Boi is the only man on Earth who can make huge criticisms and still think its a good movie.
For the viewers at home, High Boi made passionate love to Goose in an airplane, and the cable is 23 meters away unless it isn't.
7:31 it really should though
I love this movies... thanks for it
That thumbnail is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen
As an air cadet this is funny as hell
9:37 yes, the jets did have flares but in this close of a range flares wouldn't do a lot + the reaction timing would be very slow
So your the guy high Boi was talking about the whole video

9:27 The reason there's so much reciclying is because the navy didn't allow them to shoot more than 2 missiles
In fact a fake explosion looked so real the Navy opened an investigation on it
I kind of wanted you to explain the entire video like a top gear episode.
"And tonight, we are looking at the man who flew over mach 10"
1:56 I study military tech and the wire would catch the plane and prevent it from taking off again. If he didn’t have his hook down, he could take off again like that as long as there wasn’t a plane on the side catapults.
Why didn't he have his hook down if he's planning to land? Are you supposed to put them down only right before attachment or something?
Probably ghost perk from cod 0:45
“Bottom pistol”
Everything is spontaneously funny about high boi, but You had me at naming that pilot Bollywood
About those cables, at least with the planes I worked with, you need to extend the hook to catch the cable for it to work. That's why they can use the same runway for both takeoff and landing despite the cable.
I think Maverick getting laid really hit High Boi in the jealousy section of his brain.
the top gear opening got me offguard Im crying hahahahhaahaha

This is the best movie recap so far. Love seeing you expand a bit on your video formula and adding more jokes
That drinking Sukhoi got me. I was watching this video while playing DCS in a Su-33 and that made it all more hilarious.
