I had one very similar to the Marbles. I think mine was made by Coleman? It was not brass, but it was chromed. I carried it for many years. Now I wish I still had it.
I always keep my matches in an empty medicine container. There are others, with flip-top lids, or even an old toothbrush case. Maybe an empty TicTac container?
Thank you and I have not found any sources that say it ever was. In the US, unlike today the military did not issue you everything and the kitchen sink, until WWII. Much of a soldiers personal nick knacks and odds and ends was outfitted for himself/herself or by the Red Cross. By then the various versions of plastic match safes took over because they were waterproof, floated, and did not dent. That is a great question my friend!
You are right! In Ohio you can't find them off the shelf in the box stores. I found out after the video was made that they can be ordered off of Amazon, they are expensive too! From what I read it is due to the increased hazardous shipping cost and there are so few makers of them.
Strike anywheres are still obtainable but the real story of matches in America is the total market usurpation by Diamond. It is niche and difficult to find alternative brands. A few months ago I was thrilled to discover Ohio Blue matches at a local mom n pop sporting goods/ hardware store. $4.97 for 250. Still in that classic blue slider box. The same box of Diamond Green Tips are $1.97. Bought both. Ran a test. Not a dimes worth of difference except the Ohio Blue smell like matches should. Folks essentially pay almost triple the price for nostalgia and the blue box

I recently bought one of these early match safe's along with a pin-on coat compass at a gun show,to accompany my Marbel's hunting knife
That's a great classic combo! I still need to add the pin on or watch Compass to my kit. Happy New Year my friend!

I used Coleman's version match safe in my backpacking days. I did not find the knurled striker to be very effective.
I had a Coleman one as a youth, wish I knew what happened to it!
Without strike anywhere matches the roughed surface is not much use

When I was a Scout I used a medicine bottle or a film case. Worked just fine!
The UCO brand makes an ecellent strike anywhere match.
keep up the good work
Good history on the Match Safe!
Any record of it ever being issued to U.S military?

Thanks for the feedback, I have wondered for quite awhile what the differences might be!
