The knurling on the outside is used as a striker for a "lights anywhere" match. My Marbles match holder was carried by my Great Grandfather in WWI, my Great Uncle in WWII, my Mother in Vietnam and myself in Desert Storm. I will pass it on to my daughter one day.
I'm very happy to see you doing a video on this traditional piece of kit. I've had one of these match safes for probably 35 years. Still carry the old barn burners in it. Two Big Thumbs up.
I have a knock off one seals well. This technique may help someone in a pinch. This unit had been laying in a box for several decades. There was a strip of striker in it. I decided to light a match with it. It did not work. It seemed to have a shiny wax like coat on it. I decided to scrape it with a knife blade after which it would light a match.
Great video! I have an original that was passed down from my grandfather. Like him, I carry it every day in my pocket, for me, it’s mostly for nostalgia.
Not necessarily just for matches. Size a small Ferro Rod to fit inside, put in some Tinder, and use the case itself as a Striker. Also, if you have an older one with a bad seal, Auto Parts Stores like Advance or Auto Zone sell Rubber Sheeting to make Gaskets. Just cut out the size you need and replace. Also works for Metal Canteens like US Military. Hope this helps. Thanks again and Take Care.
I have an old BSA match safe. I think they are wonderful and useful. I always have three means of starting a fire in my kit, a lighter, ferro rod and matches. I often use the more modern plastic ones from Walmart etc, but I love my old antique one!
When I was in B.S.A I learned from an much older gentleman that if you trim down the matches also slightly you can put a small fishing kit being small amount of line small hooks, small split weight sinkers, and a small feral rod inside.
I have carried one in my kit for over fifty years. Over the years its has been a lot of things other than a match safe. They work great for holding things like tinder, or pills. At one time I used mine for a small fishing rig. Just a neat handy little waterproof box for storing stuff. They get a great patina over the years, mine has patches of brass showing through the nickle plating.
I bought one of these at a yard sale, got home opened it up and surprise surprise inside was a joint which I gave away and filled it with ohio blue tip matches .
Great piece of gear and useful for more than just matches - aspirin and medication comes to mind as long as you keep it simple. I still have a bunch of yesteryear 35mm film canisters I started using when ferro rods were unheard of and the consenses was matches were easier than a bow drill and only smokers used or afforded lighters.
Heck yeah. If you carry matches a safe is a must. Otherwise they get wet and all you’ll have is a piece of tinder that still needs some source of ignition.
I use a small left over pill bottles from the pharmacy. On the pill bottle the lid is reversible, so you can make it child proof or flip the lid upside down and use it that way and it’s no longer child proof and it screws down into the bottle about a 1/4”. I use the non child proof way most of the time. Also I can use one lid and attach two bottles and place it in my pack for more vertical storage. If I want it more water resistant I put some telling tape on the threading on the non child proof side. I use this hack to store everything; matches, 22 ammo, 12 gauge primers, fire starter material, fishing hooks and sinkers, I have a fishing rod tip repair kit in one, extra batteries, etc. As far as the matches go, it may not be as watertight and durable as the Marbles case, but it is close enough and it’s free.
Matches aren't the only thing one can carry a trick birthday candle that stays lit helps and a ferro rod can be placed in it also along with a sliver of sap wood.
Uco made strike anywhere matches with the red a white heads not too long ago. I still carry those but, are impossible to find these days. Thanks for the video.
remember, the match was invented 77 years before ferrocerium. i say this because i see guys saying they use traditional methods while using one of the most modern methods available.
Had one as a scout hated it impossible to operate when hands are wet and cold plastic ones are better because you can grip the twist off lid with your teeth.
I have had a similar match case, mine I think was a Cohglan's. I like the design, but the outside knurling is useless, even with strike anywhere matches, just like yours, you better carry a striker pad inside. Wish they made these with decent deep knurls that would actually be able to strike a match! what were they thinking? they would probably have the market if they had done so, just don't get it.
Nice old style camping gear, of course it’s old stuff that makes the grade. Too bad the crap out there now a days last about long a bad smell in the wind.
Ever tried a torch lighter? I picked one up in a checkout line (Bic -priced on amazon) and have only used it a few times. So far I like it a lot. Time will tell how dependable it is.
@@TheOtherBill Post back here if possible. I have what I think you are talking about, it a Zippy blue flame, refillable but I think it leaks over time. There is something about a Bic. But I can see something replacing them.
What I have is an "Eagle Angle Torch". Pretty cheap and I see there are others that are a bit more expensive but probably more reliable long-term - looks for "turboflame".
I would bet they aren't as good. Nothing really is built as good now days. Sorry, 48 yrs old now and some things just ain't built like they used to be.
That seems like a bit of a cop out though. It's not like a sound card where planned obsolescence is a thing, it's a metal container with a rubber gasket. If the quality goes down for something like that, people need to stop buying from them because they're deliberately designing a faulty product. Admittedly, planned obsolescence should never be a thing, but somehow we let that become an acceptable practice.

Awesome legacy!

I think we all are gonna look at grandads old match case now.

Totally something I would have in my “fun” bushcrafting day hike kit rather than my ultralight backpacking gear. Thanks for another very useful video!

The one thing I love about this channel is how active it is
I have used one for over forty years, never fails Great video as always
I carried one of those when I was younger they worked great in Maine
I bought one of these at a yard sale, got home opened it up and surprise surprise inside was a joint which I gave away and filled it with ohio blue tip matches .

Nice piece of kit to have as a backup
Good Vid Coalcracker. This made me want to dig out my old Marbles Match Case my Grandad gave me.🔥

Same here for matches and dryer lint with a little Vasoline on it.
@@kevinbowen8192 haha! And the lint we get just doing the dratted laundry. 🙄 I have a blasted pile of laundry lint from doing it. Ugh! I hate laundry.
love the vest
About time, that's cool,! Danlinski. Thank. You

Cool. I used to have one of those back in my boy scout days, like way back, 50 years back. No idea what happened to it.

That is because we have a nanny state...
Yes sir 👍 got a couple of them
They are cool
Hey bro, seeing as it is water proof, would a small Bic lighter fit in there?
Love my match safe have and old one from eBay . Love it ! Be good brother

I use the uco match containers best matches in the world
awesome match case

Nice.

We have one of those!
Can you light a match on the knurling of the case?
Thx
Good
I wonder if the Bic will ever become obsolete? What would replace it? I don't use matches any more.

Zippo with a ranger band boys that's what I use
I use mine to store toothpicks but my issue is it's stuck it will not open again I cannot get it to twist open
Used to hv one of thoz... dunno where it is now!
I've never been a fan of those cases. Seems when you need matches it's always difficult to get the case open. They just get bound up.
First. Nice video!
Don't forget to like .
mine came with no rubber gasket lol
Is there a reason why the reproductions are half the price of the originals, or is it just because "antique"?

l just made a shotgun bullet has a waterproof to my matches or cotton wool backup
Likey
I keep weed in mine
I have one of the newer ones. I've had it about years. Not the greatest piece of gear. The old Marbles is probably better.
But you still had ten seconds left. I feel cheated.
Modern kitchen matches suck
