- Sometimes you have to decline top tech company offers in order for them to come back and gives you a better one.
In this video I break down a real life example of how a recruiter initially told my client that the best she could do was $275K for a Sr. Program manager role (tech L6).
We got the number up to $300K total comp, but then walked away.
Amazon then came back and opened their checkbook with an email that effectively said “what’s your number, we will get it approved by the VP”
Ultimately my client decided not to take the role at Amazon for a number of reasons which I get into in the video.

@johnmarty great video and great insight. I like the length and style of these videos. Thanks a lot!
Turning down an Amazon offer tomorrow. Remote position until I got the offer and low balled!
What happened? Did you get a better offer?
Please continue to make videos. They provide more value than you could ever imagine!
Very interesting scenario, thanks for sharing! Also, I miss my OG Voltron more than I can say. It's lovely to see yours in the background ❤
Love it, John!
Yep, cannot take recruiter's initial-final number as THE final number! And having leverage (another offer) definitely changes these negotiations and enable you to approach it with a different mindset.
Love your content John!
Thanks John
Wish I had this info when I was negotiating
Hi John. What if the leverage is a counter-offer from my current job? Or even my current salary. Can I still use the same approach?
Would this high compensation be offered to someone who works as an AWS independent software vendor at Amazon, doing account management?
Just walked away from Amazon’s offer. Lets see if they get back 😂
Did they ever get back?
L6 ---- $275k total comp offer? No way
L7 doesnt even make that
Cant speak for L8
But you were an ex-employee.... So I suddenly feel like ive been taken!
I call BS !!! My opinion
