Mixing Session - The Weeknd - In Your Eyes

- What a treat we have today! So, I am learning Dr.Dre's mixing techniques and found that he mixes on an SSL console only. Very little outboard gear just a DBX 160 for vocals and a hardware de-esser. I have tested the plugins and found the Waves SSL channels to be the most accurate believe it or not. The compressors on the waves ssl are closest to the actual hardware, and that is an important part of the Dr Dre sound. The EQs are typical to the hardware as well. Also, as a bonus, low CPU. I like the G channel, because it sounds good to me. Even though Dre used an E series console back in the day. I got these tracks from the protools session that is being hosted on remixpacks . club . I don't like to work in protools so I just exported the tracks from protools, and imported them in Studio One where I can work on them the way I like. Hopefully RUclips allows this video. Enjoy! Update on the Brainworx plugins. I didn't know how to read the results from plugin doctor correctly. Actually, the Brainworx plugins are closer to the real console in terms of sound.
you did your thing on this song mix sound like a 70s classic
Thank you very much! ☺️☺️☺️☺️💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I'll be binge watching your videos on my weekend.
Thanks! I hope my videos inspire some cool ideas for your projects! ☺️💯💯💯
Amazing 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much. ☺️☺️☺️💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I am a professional sound engineer but now i learn something amazing, Yooo man you're good.
Thank you very much! Your comment means a lot to me! Thank you! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯
nice one !
Thank you! Cheers!
U’re humble that’s what I found out about your work flows
Thanks man! I really appreciate it, and yeah, I aim for simplicity.
Truth fact
I have heard this whole album a lot. My question is wouldn't that room give you false feed back and effect your mix? Seems like one small echo room with glass added. When i finally treated my room my mixes started improving.
My speakers are against the wall, so the room is not taken too much into account when I'm mixing, but I also have headphones for a second check if needed. It's not an ideal setup, but I know these speakers, and have listened to tons of music on them, so I know how a good mix should sound on them. But you are right, a perfectly tuned room with a good range of high-end monitors would be better than what I am using. Also, when I mix, I am not doing a lot of surgery, so I am really just taking the existing sound, and making a quick decision with it as opposed to whipping out Pro Q3 and really trying to look for tiny imperfections that people wouldn't pay any attention to and trying to correct those. Not saying that is a bad thing to do, or my way is better, it is just the way I work. Nothing wrong with someone who chooses to work that way, and who may need to work in a high budget super studio to get a nice mix. I just work with what limitations I have, and I try not to overthink things.
Wow
Thx 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥
Found your channel from a comment section on another guys video speaking about what he doesn’t use channel strips. Your comments were very straightforward and truthful lol. That’s why I’m subscribing and I’m about to binge watch all your videos. Quick question though, at the beginning of this video you were talking about why you liked the waves ssl channel strip for the harmonics on the compressor. I have the brainworx strips and I recently tried the UAD version as well. Is the UAD channel strip clean or does it have those harmonics you speak about?
I misunderstood the analysis from plugin doctor at the time. I made a video after this where I tested all the SSL channel strip plugins I have with plugin doctor, and found the Brainworx to be the best after all. :)
I don't have UAD right now, but am considering their spark plugins if they release the SSL channel, and the Neve 88RS channel.
Waves turned out to be decent too, and the Brainworx and Waves are similar, but Brainworx has tolerance modeling technology, adjustable THD, and workflow perfect for using the mouse wheel to turn the knobs. So faster workflow, but one could get a similar sounding mix with the Waves SSL. That's what I found out from the plugin doctor analysis.
Here's my plugin doctor analysis video. I analyze a lot of plugins on this one. ruclips.net/video/WQj8ZYPaU64/видео.html
@@vigilantestylez appreciate it man. About to watch it now.
good video....what do you think of waves NLS? it has the ssl G console on it.....I use the nls first then the SSL G channel after for the full ssl G console sound
Yes, I have shown this in an earlier video. It works! In Studio One it is not necessary with the Brit Console MixFX engine. It handles the summing for you and replicates all SSL console styles from the vintage 4000 series up to the 9000s and Duality. Not sure if NLS is necessary with CLA Mixhub either. But yes, on the classic SSL strip, NLS if you are using a DAW that does not have SSL summing baked into the infrastructure.
NLS Channel or NLS Bus?
Very helpful video. Were the Stems gain staged before?
The Brit Console brings the levels down a bit, if it is still too loud or too soft, I'll use the input gain knob.
@@vigilantestylez Thanks brother preciated. Blessings🙏
Interesting! so you don't use any frequencies other than the ones default preset opens with?
Yep. Unless there is a problem with the sound and needs more surgical EQ, then I'll push the gain knob on that frequency high up and sweep the frequencies until I find the problem and then cut it. Otherwise I'll just leave it in place. They are at good frequencies to begin with and have a wide Q.
Where did you find the multitracks ?
Remixpacks . Club
whats the cpu model, ram amount on your pc, to able to run all those ssl instances??
I asked about your computer specs? 🤔 🙏
Waves SSL has low CPU. This machine is 4cpu cores 8 logical processors but I can run a 40 track session on a dual core laptop with no problems. Other SSL channel strips from other companies will use a lot more CPU. Waves newer SSL channel strips "CLA mixhub", and SSL Ev2 use a ton of CPU and I can't use them even on this computer for large sessions. The old G channel is very light on the CPU and sounds great. ☺️
16 gig RAM. But I can do this on as little as 4. But only for the waves SSL. Brainworx is going to need about 8 for large sessions but you can use it on smaller sessions or freeze instances while mixing.
For once, the software is actually really useful
Absolutely. I test the plugins with plugin doctor to ensure they do as advertised. There is a lot out there that don't. But some are really accurate to the hardware. ☺️
why do you keep your ratio at 8:1?
Stronger compression. Makes sounds more balanced to me. I used to go lighter but read an article where Dr Dre typically uses compression ratios of 8 to as high as 10. I go with the minimum at 8:1. Just changing release times based on the instrument. I like Dr Dre's sound and went this way after trying it. Before I would do 2:1 on instruments, 4:2 on drums of any kind.
@@vigilantestylez Dope bro, It really does make the sounds more balanced🔥🔥🔥
U’re very correct 🔥
How do you determine threshold? Are you just setting it at a level you think is appropriate or is it something you can “sweep” and listen for a sweet spot
The stems that came with that session were already mixed lol. The only unmixed parts were the Doja Cat parts lol.
That's why you don't need to do much....
That session was used for recording Doja's parts
There is a lot of processing done at the recording stage of a song. Research "Tracking".
Okay but if you A and B it I’m sure it sounds better
Are you mixing in an untreated room? 😂😂
Yes. It is not needed.
Just fyi , Your feed sounds distorted .
yeah my webcam mic, i'll try to lower it.
Yeah no problem just thought I'd let you know.
@@firstname7566 thanks. I appreciate it man. I'm planning on getting a USB mic for my videos soon. ☺️
You can't 'outdo Serban' when you start the mix with the stems from his final mix smh
You don't know what you're talking about. There is a lot of processing at the recording stage.
