    Speaking of the endocrine system, diabetics would love you (not that we don't already) if you did 11 minutes about diabetes. I knew nothing about it when I was diagnosed, and that seems to be the case for most people, so there's a lot of explaining to do when a problem comes up.

    Question: if a hormone (melatonin) controls sleep, how does that work in cetaceans where only 1/2 of the brain sleeps at a time? Do they have a mechanism to block the hormone from 1/2 of their brain at a time? Do they use 2 different hormones? This could be very complicated.

    • @mysticvitriol
      @mysticvitriol 2 года назад +12

      My *hypothesis*without any reasearch is that the nervous system plays a bigger role in that. They release melatonin in the body which tell them it's sleep time and then the nervous system controls which portion sleeps.
      Idk for sure I will search about it later

    • @IHateUniqueUsernames
      @IHateUniqueUsernames 2 года назад +19

      It controls sleep in humans doesn't mean it does the same thing in other species. It was clearly noted in the video that the different species respond differently to the same hormones. It's very possible that the 1/2 brain sleep ability is a nervous control (I'm thinking partial paralysis of stroke victims) instead of hormonal. I'll now KIV this very interesting question to read up later.

    Puberty cannot be separated from the social changes that occur. In the USA, at around 10-12 kids are just beginning middle school, a social transition where teachers try to exercise more control, and kids reorganize themselves into groups for protection. We also see kids being made to wake up earlier for school. Girls and some underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities are more likely to experience adverse childhood experiences, which release cortisol and can cause biological changes.
    Puberty is a time for biological change, yes, but it's also a time of psychological and social changes that all interact. The horrors of puberty are not inevitable. A strong support system, mental health care, later school start times, and adequate nutrition and physical activity can help with quite a bit of problems commonly associated with being a teenager.

    This video got me thinking on the other big human hormonal change time in life.... Would you please do a video exploring if Andropause is real and why do only 5 animals go through the Menopause? Do those same 5 also experience some form of Andropause, if it truly exists? As I am in perimenopause, I'm very curious about this...

    Puberty also comes at a really wierd age. Like OK if its meant to be in line with the animal kingdom it should be around 6 years old. If its meant to be around the time your brain is developed enough to handle it then it should be around 16 years old. Why does it start at the least convenient age, take years and for some people start at a seemingly random age

      same, i just kinda went in a direct smooth like from child to adult, IMO it was 100% a straight up improvement.
      It's interesting because i can distinctly remember how mental tasks became way easier as my brain matured, things that were previously hard to wrap my head around became easy!

      I would like to point something out, I am not trying to insult you, I am just trying to add constructively to your perpective;
      You yourself may have had an easy puberty, but that does not mean everyone who had a painful, uncomfortable, or emotionally intense puberty is "acting." I genuinely ask why is it that you consider your experience universal? Every aspect of humanity exists on a spectrum of differences; you are on a part of the spectrum that granted an easy puberty, where others are on parts of the spectrum that are much more difficult to have experienced.
      Does that make sense?

    • @jimmym3352
      @jimmym3352 2 года назад +2

      puberty was easy for me too. The biggest thing to deal with is how to deal with those se...l urges. And I grew up in the 80's, I didn't know about doing certain things since it was never talked about back then. But other than that, I didn't have emotional swings, I think that's mostly for girls. Emotionally I was as stable as can be, even more so than I am now unfortunately.

    Question about 6:23 is dopamine a hormone? I know for sure that dopamine work in the brain as neurotransmitter, and they cannot pass through the blood-brain-barrier so that cannot go to the blood stream. Hormones are chemicals work and transport via the blood stream. Some hormones like melatonin, testosterone can pass through the blood-brain-barrier and work as neurotransmitter when they are inside the brain. But for dopamine, I quickly checked on the internet, and could not find a reliable source(those pages contained some wrong information). So I am curious about this part.
