Why does sex exist? You might think the obvious answer is “reproduction” but there are plenty of organisms on Earth that don’t require sex to reproduce. And the more that scientists examined sex, they more they realized that it’s an expensive and inefficient way to get your genes to the next generation. The true purpose of sex is actually one of the longest-standing mysteries in evolutionary biology. But scientists are closer than ever to finding the answer. Here’s what we know about the evolutionary enigma of sex.

As your neighborhood science dad, you knew this day was coming. It's time we had "the talk"… about why sex is even a thing, biologically speaking.
Ok
I literally just had this talk with my mom Joe
I think the video just got me thinking a little bit about my biology lessons that I learned.
Awesome Video
Biology is just horny
The talk today goes like this:
"Son we need to talk"
"Dad we have the internet. I already know"
actually i first read about sex in TFIOS in the 4rth grade. and then i found out morre about it. in the internet. ok, nvm
Lol this was how the talk worked for millennials getting the talk in the 90's. I'm just gonna go: Explain to me std prevention and birth control options.
Been there done that lol
Truuuuuuu
I said that lol
"Species don't stop evolving just because they've succeeded in their environment."
I love that!
Although a lack of environmental pressures can lead to apparent stagnation. Humans as an example, sure, but also a lot of deep sea creatures that basically haven't changed for a millenia
@@catelynh1020 humans have constantly been under environmental pressures, the evolution of light skin for example is one of the recent evolutionary changes that many had
@@pijn2370 yes, and no. Let's take bad vision as an example.
In ancient history, bad vision would generally come late in life, but if you were young and had bad vision, you would be more likely to die younger and not pass your bad eyesight on. As humans got more advanced and developed more tools and created a supportive society structure, the pressures to not have bad eyesight start to go away.
Now, if your eyesight is pretty bad (say extremely nearsighted), you have the chance to have glasses or surgeries to help correct it. Many of the effects of being nearsighted are minimized or negated. Screens and cameras can take things that are far away and not visible and make it close enough to be focused on. There's also help we build in to our societies for people with poor eyesight, such as audio cues or tactile clues. Something detrimental is not detrimental enough to prevent it from continuing on in other generations.
@@pijn2370 i realize i didn't mention light skin in my reply, but i think it'd be a good example as well.
Light skin is useful in areas where more vitamin d is needed drom the sun. Basically, colder and darker regions on the planet. But people wouldn't necessarily turn *more* white if they move from a warm climate to a cold because we keep ourselves more comfortable with our tools. Sun/uv lamps, vitamin supplements, even tanning salons, would start to negate the lack of sun from the environment.
In other words, the environmental pressure of cold climates not having as much sun is more or less negated by our technology
@@catelynh1020 how would white skin help with vitamin D production?
Card tricks don't seem to be essential for survival in his environment.

As someone who majored in Genetics with a minor in psychology looking to do genetic counselling 30 years ago. So kudos to you on this excellent video.
Thankyou
Genetics drive to the average person? Why?

What is genetic counselling?
@@xSwordLilyx Looking at the genetic backgrounds of the parents and determining the probability that any future or currently unborn children the the couple will have a specific % of inheriting two recessive copies of the genes (one from each parent) for various medical conditions, i.e. Hemophilia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Down Syndrome, etc. That way can make in informed choice on whether or not to have children or if already pregnant they know what to expect before the child is born.
As biologist I'm applauding you for your brilliant explanation and mentioning all important nuances! That's wonderful work! I wish there were more popular science resources like this which do not distort the original idea/concept.
Except that not all the information he is giving is accurate. There are not females in the asexual species.
Yes yes yes!!!
both you and this delusional person in video believe in evolution so both of your lives/applauding are irrelevant
Agreed. Was brilliantly done and exceeded my expectations.
It was brilliant but he didn't mention sexual reproduction in prokaryotes and other asexually reproducing species. Horizontal gene transfer also exists is more complex multi cellular eukaryotes but less prevalent that sex makes sense of also a factor.

I do appreciate this channel and ones like it. It's just slang like that is annoying and sounds dumb to me.
This concept of "the talk" is really interesting to me. I come from The Netherlands and this isn't really a thing here. At least, not in mildly progressive families. We just pick up random stuff from lessons in school, friends and family until we have collected enough snippets of information to understand how it works and what it is. I think it works like that because people are generally just open about it, even to kids. At least, my family and my friends' family was.
I live in finland and i found "the talk" as a weird concept too because i never had it and it just seems so awkward for your parents to explain what sex is to you. Honestly i have no idea where i first learned it, i guess i was just curious as kids are and like you i got snippets of information here and there until i got a general idea what it was and then fully understood it during middle schools sex ed.
I find that concept weird too. I think "The Talk" is mostly an American thing. In my culture (perhaps even the whole country), we also just pick up random stuff from here and there until we have the whole picture. It's not that it's taboo to talk about it, it's just not a thing
I never had it explained either, I learned from school. I'm from Hungary, lol. Idk if it's the same with everyone else or not here, but I never even heard of "the talk" referred to it at all.
I'm 13 and from the UK and my parents haven't given me "the talk" i don't know if they ever will, but they don't really need to since i just picked up everything i know from the internet
Im brazilian and i had "the talk", i guess i depends on the family really.
"Sex is twice as costly as no sex". I can assure you that the economic, social and business related outcome can be much, much worse than that
My mom gave me the talk when I started puberty, but I always had a decent idea of how babies start out since I was very small. I'm adopted, and my mom wanted me to never feel like it was hidden from me, so she'd frequently tell me, "You're not from my belly, but that doesn't change how much I love you."
I basically knew that babies were in "bellies", and that they did not come from supernatural means xd
Saaame!!! My mom told me that I wasn't from her womb but from her heart. So I guess it wasn't so surprising for me.

And if you think someone smells bad, you're a bad match. Modern anti-perspirents and perfumes throws off that whole pheromone filter
It's not just antiperspirant and perfumes causing these problems.
Hormonal birth control can make a woman more attracted to someone with similar scents as their family because it's tricking their body into thinking that they're pregnant, leading to seeking familial protection.
Ever see a couple arguing like siblings or parents and children? That could be part of the reason.

Or you came to the same conclusion as him. Or maybe that guy that explained the red queen theory. But you still could make another groundbreaking theory though. Heres to hoping.
@@zafraz1077 Ted Ed has something like this . The five fingers of evolution. It was published 9 years ago.
I also think that the existence of sexual dimorphism in more complex species like mammals or birds allows one species to focus on survival while the other can reproduce. Women being physically weaker than men makes them "more valuable" biologically. Testosterone is what causes muscle mass to develop easily, and too much of it makes women infertile. Human women have a hard enough time giving birth as it is, so you don't bother. The propagation of species is more important than muscle mass, women are strong enough to survive on their own anyway, and if men die sperm is cheap and donors are willing.
Same with peafowl. Peahens are beautiful in their own right, but peacocks look like a giant bullseye in the wild. If they survive existing to adulthood, they might be worthy of female attention.
I know that's a *really* abrasive way of looking at it, but women are just DNA trying to clone itself too, so that's reality.

Life in general in known for encouraging reproduction which means that adult fun time is usually inherently pleasurable for most people. excuse me... "one of the biggest unanswered questions in science"? It's pretty obvious that sexual reproduction allows for a wider variability in offspring's DNA than the simple "occasional mutation" asexual reproduction species count on to adapt to environmental changes, thus gives better adaptability in organisms that have a waaay longer period between each spawn. And the behaviour/mating ritual per se is a form of control to ensure both organisms partaking are fit.
Edit: watched till the end and it's a cool video tho. The poker part is cool.
Awesome, never thought of this like that but you're totally right. It's really changed my attitude to speaking about sex (in a good way)
In my environment many say: "you have to have kids as it's your main target to reproduct." And no stuff about this as an art and evolution. An extremely cool video, thanks
It's not our main target to reproduce.
We can decide if we want a child. Or not.

You touched on the issue in your intro... I was hoping you would develop it further. When Dad came in to talk to Son, his reaction pointed out the psychological weight sex carries in humans. Why is sex such a heavy subject with us? This weight transcends societal and religious norms or taboos. The fact is sex carries emotional and psychological consequences. I would like to see an episode tackling those questions.

How is the sex talk hard? Literally "we started learning about the reproductive system in school today" and go from there
Some kids aren't as lucky with their parents as you were. There are families who don't *really* communicate with each other. Some parents have no clue how to talk about it because of their experiences or their own parents, so they don't know what "normal" is regarding sex. Some parents are conservative. Some parents come from a culture where sex is a touchier subject. Some parents just do the talk wrong because of false beliefs.
In my case, my parents have always pretended sex doesn't exist. Despite being relatively open, feelings, affection, love and sex are things we never discuss. I don't know if it's because of culture, but they rarely show affection, whether physically or verbally (even as an adult I cringe when I hear someone say "I love you" to their parents). Do you honestly think "the talk" is an easy thing for parents who are like this?
Because most people are prudes when it comes to this. They still think that kìds have some kind of unbroken "innосеnсе" for many years. That's a myth at best, and wilful ignorance at worst.
Also, selective breeding can lead to even more desirable traits. Random selection keeps species going, but we know that selective breeding can completely change a species for better or worse
But selective breeding always favors a certain characteristic at a cost of another. It often involves other costs. Often the cost is incest or lack of genetic variety, with too much selected breeding
It’s so interesting to me how much parasites were focused on in this video! They were not brought up in any of my genetics classes in college. Is this just an example of the benefits of genetic diversity at work or are they really that big of a threat to complex organisms?
I learned about them in middle school in Turkey, what kind of schools dö you have over there?!?

Am I the only one who noticed the self-pollination joke at 3:16
Still can't get over the fact that his name is Joe.
I'm remembering all the joe mama jokes.
One other thing I learned from watching Lucy was that immortality has something to do with sex. Inhospitable environments that are too cold or too hot are hosts to organisms that never die, hence the lack of need for sex.
The reason why "the talk" is so hard to have is that people think of sex as a shameful act, and it's not. When kids ask, just explain it to them casualy. It's so simple yet it solves so many possible issues down the road.
The problem is the conversation is with an immediate blood family member and being weirded out is a healthy mindset against incest.
@@eowyneadig7879 yeah like how in a healthy mind you get weirded out by thoughts about sex around or with family members, since like you said, it stops incest
Me trying to explain to the police officer when caught in a prostitution bust: "This is for genetic diversity to make us a little bit more fit in the next generation....."
Officer: "You have the right to remain silent...."
Golden.
The flaw in your argument is reproduction is usually avoided at all costs in prostitution.
0:20 Joe be like, "NOooooooo ...... ok fine dad, whadayya wanna know?"
Basically saying adding more randomness can actually make perfection if perfection is the goal to begin with. Adding more diversity overtime can increase darwinism much faster. Unfortunately sometimes you get the short stick and wont reproduce anyway.
I will add with modern science even those who genetically were not suppose to reproduce do messup with gene pool. It's just so microscopic it doesnt matter as a whole.
Let's not forget the multitudes who have to die/ fail for the "game" to proceed.
Short stick hehehehhe........... sh*t.....
Not only perfection, but complexity, less complex organism are better off doing ase*ual reproduction, while a more complex organism needs se* reproduction
@@TheMaztercom I like that. Brings to light what the next stage of reproduction will be. Probably after each mom is having 10 kids per term per week. Mammals are incredibly wasteful when it comes to reproduction and energy retention. Egg were even more wasteful.
@@wayando I think about this daily lol.
I think it’s obvious. Positive attitudes and interest in sex (which will increase the odds of conception) will be more frequent amongst couples with closer bonds and intimacy. Closer parental bonds equals higher chance of kid surviving and thriving into adulthood.
So, in having sex, I am essentially signaling that I am very close to my wife and will likely stay with her when (and long after) she conceives.
Obviously there are some who want to “hit and quit” but it’s certainly the case that physical and emotional intimacy among parents will promote a good household for the child. It’s also true that conception rates are higher if the women has a good time too, likely for the same reason.
Maybe it’s easy to forget in modern isolated society. But until very recently, human survival required close knit familial bonds. Humans, and truly most mammals (compared to birds reptiles) are hardly physically dominant
You didn’t watch the vid didn’t you
I never really had the talk. I remember learning what sex was from hearing about it a few times as a kid, then I looked it up and learned about it and protection and such. Also learned about protection from classmates who knew more. Overall it was extremely easy to learn about, so it has always surprised me that people don't learn about it until much later sometimes
Never actually had the talk, I was already doing it when I probably should have had the talk, with people my own age ofc. Also where I'm from it's not very taboo to talk about, so it's something you just pick up on as you grow up

The biggest advantage of sex is the rate of evolution. That's it. Our bodies are designed to enjoy the feeling of having sex and our brains to crave the act as a way to encourage rapid reproduction. Thus, faster evolution. Biology is pretty cool.
I think the even more interesting question is 'why are species even reproducing?'
Just to feed an endless circle of reproduction in a lifespan that has no more meaning than to survive, for some time and grow offspring to do the same over and over again?
That's where the question of a deeper purpose in life comes into play. Why should we as humans even have the ability to reflect on our thoughts and behaviors if the outcome stays the same?
Are we just the victims of a cruel evolutionary joke, or does our life fulfill a bigger purpose; because if life's only purpose would be inherently tied to our instincts, wouldn't that also make us incapable of true free will and therefore determined slaves of nature?
To sum it up,
Where's even the point in reproducing and why can we put it into question at all?
wow thats deep
I've always wondered this too
The purpose of life is reproduction because that's the type of lifes that will remain, if something had a DNA like genetic molecule but didn't have the function to reproduce, it would end after it died.
Now what about something that did have that function? Yes it will survive and therefore over a long period of time, only "living" beings that remains are those that can reproduce, we are all just information working itself out, we aren't actually "living" more than as much as any other rocks exist.
Humans also being able to reflect on those thoughts isn't anything crazy, it's just that the information has progressed in a way so it can think about itself. like how this sentence is referring to itself "this sentence is true"
I am 14 and this is deep
It's a crisis
The problem with the “winning hand” analogy is that the vast majority of genes from members of the same species are identical. Humans for example differ from each other in only 0.1% of our genes. Of course mixing genes from completely incompatible species would result in an unviable set of chromosomes; the advantages come out when small changes are introduced (either by shuffling that 0.1% or in random mutations) which do something beneficial in the offspring.
0.1 is actually a lot when speaking about genetcs

I'd rather think about the normal 'winning hands' as losing hands instead. Like a 3-of-a-kind means you're more likely to develop cancer. Therefore, 'shuffling your hands' is advantageous as it further removes you from one of those 'losing hands.'
