I don’t get it... signed up in 96. Had to to sit ups, push ups and pull ups to max effort. Carry weights and jerrycans then 1.5mile warm up followed by 1.5 mile best effort. Getting sub 8 min was a hell of an achievement after all those exercises. Doesn’t the push up, sit up and pull up test endurance and muscular strength? I thought that was tried and tested with evidence? I still measure my fitness by these standards. It was still nothing compared to the beasting I got in infantry training.we were fit motherfuckers
I signed up in 96, I was shit at pull ups so trained my arse off, scraped through selection with minimum 6 pull ups. Press ups, sit ups and a run were all a doddle, and the 12 week basic training PT regime got me in tip top shape! Even at my fittest and fastest and not wearing the trusty silver shadows I never managed to break the 8, 8:01 was my best ever and it still haunts me 😆. I agree though, these were hard tests and somewhat nerve racking, and I still suppose these are a great benchmark for a basic fitness test. It will always be a BFT to me!
So basically the tests just become easier and easier as society becomes physically weaker. And, before you ask I did six years in the Marines in the 90's so I've got a decent idea of what military/battle fitness means. Your 'All Arms' so you know what type of fitness is needed for bottom field.
Let's face it, unless you can kill the enemy with an awesome display of Regimental press ups and sit ups these tests arent really going to do diddly :) Being able to do 400 press ups in 2 minutes doesn't necessarily mean you can fireman lift a 90kg troopy or doing 200 sit ups in 30 seconds doesn't mean you can hump 200kg of ammo for the guns up a hill. They'd be better off doing proper physical fitness assessments but you know as well as I do that very few, including those currently surving, would actually pass the examinations 🤣🤣
The tests can be better though. Sit ups and press ups don't necessarily tell you anything other than some people would be natural born killers if all it took was several regimental press ups to kill Nigel/Abdullah/who ever you are told is the bad guy this week. Ive seen guys who can pop press ups out like a pimp on a Saturday night BUT then fall apart once they get to the field because they are pussies on the inside and can't handle a little cold, damp, romantic walks through tropical jungles etc. Also seen spindly weeds of guys packing several times their body weight with the gun, ammo and all the other pointless things that make us love being out in the field. Personally Id rather the tests were along the lines of battle fitness testing but there you go, that would probably kill 9/5ths of all applicants.

The mid thigh pull is about lower body strength, so I'd suggest doing squats and deadlifts. The technique on the mid thigh pull is closer to an Olympic weight lift or partial squat (rather than to a finish of a deadlift or rack pull); the bar positioning from the knee to the hip (roughly the middle point of the thigh); keep the torso relatively straight vertically and use a minimal knee bend; pull at hip width apart and with arms straight; you're required to pull hard and fast for a 5sec period; commit to a full period, but make sure when you're ready to pull, pull hard and fast and don't intend to 'build up over time'.

Seems things are getting easier... I remember Jerry can farmer's walks, bleep test, ammo tin lift, Deadlift measurement, chin ups 8-15minimum followed by 2 mins sit ups and press ups, 1.5mile warm up followed immediately by 1.5mile best effort. So all I'd have to do now is trow a ball 9feet, run 1.2miles and pull using force plates to my thigh. Seems things got a lot easier for the new snowflake generation
Honestly wtf does the mid thigh high pull do? If not connected to some sort of machine to test how hard your pulling or is it something you have to hold.
The mid-thigh pull is a maximal strength test done with a barbell and force analysis hardware (primary measuring peak force). The bar doesn’t move because it’s locked in place, standing on force plate, you need to pull with your legs into the ground, and put an all-out effort into pulling the bar vertically (hard and fast) to estimate the raw leg strength. In terms of test-performance correlation, research suggests that if you're a high performer in max force with the isometric mid-thigh pull, you will likely do well in strength and speed activities. So, the test basically evaluates your ability/capacity to perform.
This wasn't even posted on April fools day? Can't be serious. My 8 year old son could pass these fitness tests. He's just smashed out 30 press ups in a minute, so I'm guessing by standing up straight holding a bar, he can join the SAS?
Thanks for watching and your comment! Feedback on the tests would probably be best directed/placed on the official Army Channel as I do not have any involvement/leverage in that.
These tests have only been brought in so women and LGBT can join first line units as non were passing the entry standards after the government allowed them to be employed in them. No robustness required just a mediocre level of fitness.
No wonder our armed forces are a fucking joke these days. That stuff replicates absolutely fuck all to do with the job. JOKE that's all those tests are. Great channel just a shame it highlights the lows of the forces now in place and not what the job really is about.
This is a joke right, pulling a bar indicates a stretcher run wtf!! What was wrong with the Jerry can walk. Don’t tell me it was too hard.unsubscribed. 🤬
James Murray that’s fair enough, but he’s got a lot of great content, and I can only see it getting better from here. I’d stick around if I were you. However, this video only shows entry requirements. Should they be harder? Imo yes, but they’re not that important in the grand scheme of things.
So it’s got even easier???? So replicate lifting a stretcher off the floor yo have to pull a bar in the gym wearing PT kit. I can from experience, say one of the hardest physical things is carrying a stretcher while still being in contact with the enemy. And that’s six of you on that stretcher not to mention the stress on your mental state as well as physical . A pissy deadlift type contraption doesn’t cut it for me. If a test is designed to replicate a task, then be as close to the task as possible. If it’s too hard for the person to do then clearly they aren’t up to the real task. The cost of which is lives. More corner cutting to get more empty uniforms through the door. Sorry people but that’s just my opinion as a rifle section commander in Basra and Sangin.

Is this new test pass or fail??
Is this a joke? Pulling on a bar and throwing a ball?
I was thinking the same thing on so many levels 😂

So no cft? Buckshy
Craig Fuller oh such snowflakes they are willing to put their life on the line for their country yeh what snowflakes
We just train to what we need. Id be perfecrly happy doing what you said if it got me into the army. Nothing snowflake about it.
Both you and your videos are very professional BUT these tests are just proving how much things have got down hill.
Thanks for watching and your comment! Feedback on the tests would probably be best directed/placed on the official Army Channel as I do not have any involvement/leverage in that.
@@Fabziy I understand I just had to comment. But keep up the Great work. Still brings back memories.
@@richardn2129 👍 Many thanks!
Is it also required to have a miserable face as the man demonstrating?
These tests have only been brought in so women and LGBT can join first line units as non were passing the entry standards after the government allowed them to be employed in them. No robustness required just a mediocre level of fitness.
2km ? we ran 3.6 km in US ARMY in 14 min
That's because we need our soldiers to have enough energy to get through the basic training!
Oi oi u made this video next to my house
Standards are dropping and they wonder why the quality of blokes coming through is shite
The iron man Dave 😂😂😂
No wonder our armed forces are a fucking joke these days. That stuff replicates absolutely fuck all to do with the job. JOKE that's all those tests are. Great channel just a shame it highlights the lows of the forces now in place and not what the job really is about.
I'm from pakistan city peshwar so you select me your Armey I'm a poor
It doesn't even look hard that fitness test at all.
Sean Wood you may say that now but when you get get there it will be hard
This is a joke right, pulling a bar indicates a stretcher run wtf!! What was wrong with the Jerry can walk.
Don’t tell me it was too hard.unsubscribed. 🤬
What’s the point of unsubscribing? He’s not the one making the tests, he’s just telling us what they are.
Harry Ward Thank you! I was just about to comment, you snatched it right out my mouth 😁👍🏽
Harry Ward ,Harry your 100% right I just don’t want to watch weak fuckers pass tests and tick boxes on my RUclips feed that’s all.👍🏻
FabZiy no worries mate, someone had to say it
James Murray that’s fair enough, but he’s got a lot of great content, and I can only see it getting better from here. I’d stick around if I were you. However, this video only shows entry requirements. Should they be harder? Imo yes, but they’re not that important in the grand scheme of things.
Lowing standard's lowering the standard of solders. Hope we don't have a war anytime soon.
Looks like army ocp's
😂😂 Standards are soo low compared with other countries 😫
Quality of soldier is so high compared to most countries though ...

Have a look at Eckhart Tolle on RUclips. He is a fantastic fellow and he is somebody who is truly living in alignment with who he is.
