4 years for me nor including 11 before that in a semi truck. My enclosed cargo trailer conversion isn't big enough for a permanent bed so I have a folding setup. I am very comfortable and it constantly improves. I did massive upgrades this year. My truck is a 2002 Chevy Avalanche and it is quite reliable despite having over 240,000 miles. It just keeps going. Rent and mortgages are a losing game for a single person. There is just no future in it unless you have a huge income. Now I couldn't care less. I have social security and some savings and I want for nothing.

You either do this to travel and explore or save money.
    1. Find 2/3 places to sleep ASAP.
    2. Create a routine(shower, work, laundry, libraries,parks/lakes/beaches etc), place to buy coffee and food.
    This establishes normalcy.
    3. Treat yourself to a motel/hotel/airBNB 1-2 times a month to take a break.
    4. Pack necessities and essentials ONLY in the vehicle.
I moved into my SUV last year and it’s amazing. Saved over 40k in a year.
    I work 60-80hr weeks.
10/month at Panera for free coffee at all Panera breads.
    Planet Fitness - 20/month.
I have 3 rest areas/truck stops I can rotate throughout the week/month that are 20 miles from both jobs.
Small storage unit(optional) but I keep my bikes etc in here.
Looking to go another 2-5 years, turn in my SUV and get a van(small one). I’m 28 and don’t want to slow down, haven’t had an issue dating either although, relationships don’t last long- they do enjoy taking adventures with me lol..
I’m a woman by the way(if this matters).

I have been living in my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan since 2015 (8 years now) , first 2 winters in Alberta rest in British Columbia. I haven't done any conversion at all, just stow and go the seats and use a 2 inch foam mattress and anywhere between 0 and 3 sleeping bags. I make an internal tarp tent for privacy now although I never blocked out the windows for the first 5 years. I can fold everything up in about half and hour and fold the seats back and drive family and friends around in a normal fashion. I've never been bothered once. I have a jetboil and trangia stove but rarely use them. I don't have a cooler and never felt the need to use solar panels etc. I work full time with a good job, I have provided for my now adult children as a separated father, my bank balance is great. I have little stress. My secret is to adapt myself rather than adapt the vehicle, e.g. go swimming alot and shop daily. Wouldn't live any other way for the time being.

@StaticCamperVan Yes it's a very personal lifestyle, that's the beauty of it, Whatever works for the individual. I'm now in my fifties and so many bed configurations gave me back issues I had trouble climbing from the back to the front seat, I found simple foam works for me. I live up in Canada I don't find the winters a problem, I just wear more clothes. I do find the heat in the summer, albeit a short summer a real problem, I don't really thrive in that heat I just bear it until it passes..
If I lived further south as you do I would be looking into installing fans and vents , cooler and solar power of some type.
I moved into my van for the same reason, money. I like watching your videos, I concur . You don't glamourise what is, in fact a very tough way to live, until you get used to it. It takes skill, lateral thought and the self belief to overcome the mental challenges, after all most people wouldn't consider living like this. I'm very proud of what I've achieved living this way, I assume from your videos you must be too.

I've lost count on the # of videos I've watch here on YT of pple living in vans/cars/trucks/suvs/uhauls/campers/rvs/etc. This one seems to be very real. I think there R a lot of part timers here on YT doing it for views/clicks but not living everyday in their vehicle like they say they R. $$$$/adsense/sponsors/merch/patreon is the game here on YT. I enjoyed seeing & hearing what you had to say. Nice realistic setup you have there. I get tired of seeing people take $40k vehicles & put another $20K into them to make themselves a "stealth van". Just doesn't seem realistic to most of us who have don't have that kind of $ to start with. Most people can't just take $50K out of our pocket to buy an expensive new or used van & build it out. Most people wouldn't know the first thing about wiring a van through an inverter/LiPo battery system or using propane tanks under their sinks or even having clean potable water flowing through an electric pump & plumbing in their van. I just get disappointed seeing "PROs" do this to a brand new van just to spend 1-2 nights a week in it to pretend they're stealth van living when really they own a $250K condo in Florida (where they REALLY live) & have a steady income of $90K w/ a side hustle YT channel that makes $3K per video 2 X /wk. Nothing seems real sometimes but you're setup sure does. Thank you for that.

But, it IS cheaper. My son has been living in a 5'x10' cargo trailer we converted to a camper. He has more room than you, though still a tight squeeze. The trailer is paid-off. If he lived at home, his commute would be about 2 hours each way. His commute with the trailer is no more than 5 miles, sometimes 0 miles. Rent for very cheap apartment in the area starts at $1,300 / month. Add-in utilities and it'll be around $1,500 / month.
He would STILL need a car to commute, and STILL need a cell phone. Data plan on the cell for the trailer is $100 / month, but car miles is far fewer, so gas and wear-and-tear cancels that out.
He has a gym membership for showers, and probably eats-out a bit more than he would otherwise - call it $200 / month extra. His net savings PER MONTH is around $1,400.
PS( Not having room to store junk helps, too )

Great to hear it’s working so well for your son. I was talking about my experience which might be very different than others as I deal with major health problems and own a van that is falling apart. I tend to focus on happier matters so I wanted to make a point that nomad life isn’t always perfect or inexpensive.

Sadly this is not possible in my country, we need to have a home address in order to get our salary, and no you can’t just have an address at someone else’s place, even if you know the person living there, it is somehow illegal. So yeah we can’t escape paying rent in some way or another.

I will live the rest of my life separate from all money and all "society" because it is sick and rotten to the core and death is preferable to working a job. God bless you sir.

Once you go minimalist, you start to realize that you really don't need about 80% all the junk you are and have acquired throughout your lifetime. I think this is what gives it such as liberating feeling knowing, you don't have tons of junk cluttering up your mind. You can use that surplus brain power to enjoy life which what we were meant to do. You are forced to focus on the needs of today not about yesterday or tomorrow, just like it says in the Scriptures.

Here in Canada, we are in a housing crises now, thanks to inflation, greedy landlords and real estate speculators who turn affordable housing into expensive Airbnb. If you can afford to buy a van and live in it you are one of the lucky ones; otherwise you can end up on the hard and dangerous streets in homeless encampments. It is becoming a national disgrace.

SCV, when you were in Seattle working a temp job, I asked you if you were able to stack cash. You replied no, and it came off as if it wasn't a concern or a priority of yours. Of course that is your business and your right to conduct your finances as you see fit. However, that is a missed opportunity to build wealth, to build a nest egg, for security. I get that "SOME" van lifers do really well with their channels and selling Swag, but it is absolutely painful to watch van lifers well under the age of retirement waste their productive years. Scott, if I may call you that, you live with dignity and a humility that is admirable. At least you not some f-ing loser that hangs out at the Slabs doing live chats begging for money so that they can sustain their vices. Good luck sir, no judgement, it looks as if you are doing well.

Sorry If I sounded short back then. When I was a temp worker, I barely made enough money to cover my expenses.
That changed when I got hired on with the company. The big increase in pay changed the situation.

Ive thought a lot about doing this and decided I would not want a huge vehicle either. They are harder to drive in the wind and mountains, harder to park, and more expensive to drive and buy as you mentioned.
I have a large dog though so would have to go up one from the size you are in.
Yes, who needs sticks and bricks home when you live in California anyway. It is the best weather there.
Many do this life because they want to travel a lot and whats the point of owning or renting if you are never there anyway.
You are a big hit here with the public and your numbers seem to be rising fast so you have the IT factor needed. Reminds me of Steve Wallis on youtube who people just love to watch. He is over a million already. You and he both have such a calming effect on people. 👏
    thanks for sharing.☕️Cheers!
