There are plenty of forests and camping spots in the East Coast. You are just not going to find them if you stay in the I-95 corridor. There is a whole world outside of that area on the east coast.
Yeah I grew up in New Hampshire. I live in Washington State. There's infinite places to camp in VT, NH, and ME and they are all gorgeous, lush forest that is much more green than Western states during the summer. And there's a LOT better places to swim than in WA State. Lakes out here in WA State are generally more desolate, often glacier so they're cold, and the weather doesn't get hot enough to enjoy a good swim.
@@PalpitoMcCrayThere are plenty of great swimming spots in Washington. And not all of them are isolated. But the isolated ones are better because there's no people around to ruin the fun. As an urban van dweller, my favorite overnight parking spot is a 24hr convenient store. What's not to like? Fuel, restroom, basic supplies + foodie deals! Easy to blend in. Next is the 24hr gym. No parking hassle, exercise equipment, climate controlled, bathroom, hot showers. Last but not least, 24hr restaurants, Waffle House, IHOP, Dennys ect... make sure to patronize these businesses. Buy some Fuel, food or a cup of coffee ect. Like your channel man. Screw the mortgage con and mafia style vig rent. Van life is definitely worth a consideration.
I have heard suggestions that many Planet Fitness employees are well aware that full-timers (who are also members) overnight in their parking lots and don't care. Honestly, so long as they don't drop a bunch of litter or anything like that, why should they care?
@@thevagabondonwheels4918that’s great. As long as the van lifers keep their stuff clean and keep the gym and bathrooms they use tidy, they’ll probably continue to not bother them.

Look up the Dawn power wash - it is a foam like spray that is amazing for cleaning up even the greasiest of dishes - using just 2 micro dish towels, the one I use damp and to clean with the power wash, then a small pan of water to dip and rinse, then the dry towel to dry it off. I use minimal water this way when camping and it is a true water saver! Hope that helps.
I am making plans to go SUV camping on the East Coast soon. The Dawn Power Wash has been such a dramatic change to my dish washing at home. Very little water needed even on greasy pans.
I enjoyed this casual day-in-the-van-life video. I don't always need to see a hike or other tour, or a complex meal preparation. This is perfect just as it is.
You literally were parked outside my first apartment in philly. It’s a pretty safe neighborhood, I would walk around the area at all hours of the night never felt unsafe. In philly young bulls riding on their atvs is a sign the weather is nice! Moved here 10 years ago and I still love it here.
I'm the same as Ryan as far as lonely/being alone. I very rarely ever get lonely, I actually prefer to be alone and very quiet, I don't enjoy chaos. But say if I go on vacation or something, I go from introvert to extrovert pretty quickly.
Exact same here! I prefer quiet and nature over people ANY day. I think the most disgusting thing I’ve done is go on a cruise. Man, the way people act these days is just sad.
I feel and function better when I take a shower. Sometimes going to Planet Fitness is inconvenient. I bought a Geyser shower system for those occasions. It takes very little setup- a shower curtain isn't necessary, and there's very little grey water to dispose of. I was pleasantly surprised by how refreshing it is. I set it to a low flow rate and make multiple passes over my body with the sponge for 5-7 minutes then I detach the sponge, turn up the flow rate and rinse off using the spray nozzle for 1-2 minutes. It may not be as relaxing as a traditional shower, but I feel just as clean.
I lived in Oregon and there are only two states where you can't pump your own gas. Oregon and New Jersey. The reason is to provide paying jobs for people was the reason given to me. I was in Newark, NJ at WhiteCastle and I forgot I couldn't pump my own gas.
Because of the fire hazards associated with pumping gas- Oregon just lifted their ban on pumping gas now NJ is the only state left where you can’t pump gas
I haven’t lived on the east coast/driven the NJ Turnpike in 30 years, but I remember those turnpike rate tickets well. I can’t believe they haven’t updated the system in all these years!
Really enjoyed just”hanging out” with you during this video. Wouldn’t mind seeing more like this at least weekly. Your share of travel time really makes my day. Peace!

Stop in KC or Fredericksburg TX for BBQ, maybe a day or two in New orleans, I'm GONE to New Mexico & onward. Oh, and here's a tip for cross country. Get a kayak or take up golf. ALL the seemingly boring areas have lakes or rivers, and most have cheap golf. Some have such good cheap golf I end up staying a couple days, but in any case 9 holes or a paddle makes a travel day a lot more fun. Lose the golf bag: too much space. Improvise with a backpack etc. I'd really like to try a folding kayak too. Sharon PA is a CLASSIC example vis a vis golf. They have a really nice 18 hole old oak course called tam o shanter for maybe 20 bucks... plus there's nine holes FREE by the park in town. Crazy.

For pondering what to do, and where to stay, I consider college campuses. Some, like the University of Iowa, have hotel management programs and hotels managed and staffed by students. I just finished my goal of travelling to all of the lower 48 states within five years. This was done in my Ram Promaster (High top) Van and I checked that box end 2023. Last year I travelled the east coast. It is certainly harder for a RVer to find places to overnight that on the western side of the country. In fact looking from west to east...from around TX east , does it gets challenging. I stayed mostly at Walmarts and good ole Cracker Barrell. Thank goodness for those two.
Man I was hoping you might make it up to check out the Pocono Mountains in North East PA some beautiful fall scenery, lakes and awesome stealth camping spots!
Local CTer here. While you were washing up in your van, you missed out on a 24-hour Planet Fitness just a couple miles away off Exit 13 Norwalk CT. Upstate our 2 mega-casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan seem camper friendly.
⚠️2:10 New Jersey and Oregon are the only 2 states that make it a law that ALL gas stations must have the employees fill up your car for safety reasons and so the flammable liquid is used properly.⚠️
Great video, you definitely should do more. Also we call them "rest stops" not service centers, that might be just a Connecticut thing lol. Getting gas in Jersey, if you're in a hurry you can just get out and pump your own gas. Wawa's are usually fine with it. But in Jersey you can't pump your own gas or make left hand turns and have to pay to leave the state :)
Yes, in NY stay off the parkways, but In NJ, the Garden State Parkway is okay for a 10ft van. Also in NY state, they post the height clearance signs 1 foot lower than the actual height...12'6" is usually 13'6". Still need to be careful going under.....In NJ and PA, their height clearance signs are correct.
Ok, life long NJ native here... There are some things I NEED to correct you on good sir lol. It is just the Parkway. Singular. The Garden State Parkway. Runs from the southern tip of NJ, Cape May, straight up into NYC. There is absolutely no section of the parkway that your van wouldn't have fit under lol. We call them Rest Stops here. The whole pumping gas thing... its for a few reasons. 1, here in Jersey anyway, some folks would probably blow themselves up or light something on fire if they pumped their own gas lol. 2, it's a tax thing. And 3, it's more jobs for people. A lot of the bigger gas stations will let people put it themselves, but not all. There are TONS of wilderness areas in Jersey to camp. It is called the Pine Barrens for a reason lol. Mainly south, south/west of the state or very very north end of the state, up in the mountains. Taking the turnpike is always a HORRIBLE decision lol, unless you have literally no other choice. Most of us avoid at all costs if we can. However brief your visit may have been lol, I'm glad you got to drive thru and I sincerely hope you give us another shot lol... I will gladly give you the layout of the land and any tips I can. Absolutely love your content Ryan. Stay safe my friend. Edit: Also, the number 1 faux pas you made.... being in Jersey, and getting a shitty gas station sandwich instead of finding a Jersey deli... and getting a sub or deli sandwich lmao. We are FAMOUS for our subs/deli sandwiches. It hurt my soul lmao.
Ocean Grove, NJ has a free public lot on the North end of Ocean Ave...And there's a free overnight public lot 2 miles North of there, in Loch Arbour /Asbury Park North end...both lots are on the beach...about 1hr from NYC and 75min from Philly...have fun, happy new year!
Try a "hiker bath." Wet a wash cloth. Add a bit of soap and 6 to 8 drops of lavender Essential Oil (or oil of your choice). Scrub top to bottom. Rinse washcloth and scrub it down your body. Rinse washcloth again and hang it to dry. You can do your hair in about any bathroom sink. Just take a small shampoo and travel towel in with you.
Salem might be a zoo this time of year with halloween not too far off. You could park in like a nearby city near the train and take the train to Salem and walk around. Or head up to Hampton Beach/Salisbury beach, not sure whats happening there the next few weeks. Also Rt 133 through Essex Ma , there are some great fish food places. And Rowley flea market on Sunday.
When you went across the Ben Franklin Bridge, you were 10 minutes from my house! You coulda stopped in & clean up, re-supply, plug in....whatever you need!

yeah it's tough to because eventually (not so distant future) the whole country will be like the east coast because the population keeps growing but the country remains the same size. So it's a shame that in 40 or 50 years, the entire country will be just apartments, townhomes and heavy traffic.

Wow, you went stealth camping in a police van in the hood 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Man I was hoping you might make it up to check out the Pocono Mountains in North East PA some beautiful fall scenery, lakes and awesome stealth camping spots!
I need a place this weekend near Coaldale or Jim Thorpe. Any suggestions?
Local CTer here. While you were washing up in your van, you missed out on a 24-hour Planet Fitness just a couple miles away off Exit 13 Norwalk CT. Upstate our 2 mega-casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan seem camper friendly.
3:03 That Couple Looking At You Like Your Insane Talking To A Camera 🤣
A+
Love this format, love the "no speaking - day in the life" format, they're all great
We don't need adventure to enjoy this journey w/ you
NYC on the weekends isn't too bad tbh. You can find a low-key spot to park in the outer boroughs.
love this kind of casual vids ... short and awesome ... I kinda dig this kind rather than the longer ones ... Much love!
That dump truck at the beginning lol. Great video as always Ryan!
i was looking for this comment!! IM DYING LMAO
⚠️2:10 New Jersey and Oregon are the only 2 states that make it a law that ALL gas stations must have the employees fill up your car for safety reasons and so the flammable liquid is used properly.⚠️
Hey Ryan Awesome trip, thanks for bringing us along, can’t wait to see where the road takes you next,I have so much to learn, before I go full time😃
You have to hit up Rhode Island for the food! Especially Providence! You will not be disappointed.
Her : have a safe travel Ryan : you as well
Hospital parking lots are my go to.
East coast IS THE BEST COAST BABYYYY!!
I think he was including NY & CT in the Parkways thing. Sawmill & Belt do have low overpasses. No commercial vehicles too.
Sports fields are great for finding a park. If you are quiet enough you can stay for as long as want
Can’t wait to see the new rig man!
Be careful in NYC. Night is a problem. I almost had an issue last year 😩
Try a "hiker bath." Wet a wash cloth.
First vanlife video Ive seen of east coast. Cool, most are west coast
the turnpike wanted you to get into the car lane instead of the truck lane that’s why it insisted you get off and back on 😂
Supposedly, you can't pump gas due to fire hazards directly involved with fuel. Per NJ law 1949.
I learned something new lol
Salem might be a zoo this time of year with halloween not too far off. You could park in like a nearby city near the train and take the train to Salem and walk around. Or head up to Hampton Beach/Salisbury beach, not sure whats happening there the next few weeks. Also Rt 133 through Essex Ma , there are some great fish food places. And Rowley flea market on Sunday.
I am from CT. the traffic from Stamford north is awful. Ive been to that rest stop many times. In the 1970s they were Howard Johnsons
Ohhh yeah. That Big and Rich song. Ok. Save a Horse! Been awhile. That was a cool song.
When you went across the Ben Franklin Bridge, you were 10 minutes from my house! You coulda stopped in & clean up, re-supply, plug in....whatever you need!
@Ryan go to Bushkill, PA! The Bushkill’s falls are amazing! Tons of outdoorsy things to do and places to stay!
If you ever come t Western Massachusetts hit a brother up and come have a warm meal and shower. I live alone with 3 bedrooms. I'll also show you some pretty cool local places and restaurants if ya want. Love your videos bud. Thanks for taking us along.
For future reference, you can take a promaster high roof on the garden state parkway. I drove it every day for two years in mine 😅
I live in NJ and I never filled up my own tank, I would like to do it my self one day haha
Ryan make more videos like this pleasee! I really love your videos. I've been watching you since day one!
Same with the Midwest.. I had the police BANGING on my windows last night at the library good grief I'm even a member of the library I was there only 3 hours. Not bothering anyone. Just them bothering me.
yeah it's tough to because eventually (not so distant future) the whole country will be like the east coast because the population keeps growing but the country remains the same size. So it's a shame that in 40 or 50 years, the entire country will be just apartments, townhomes and heavy traffic.
Truck stops have showers.
I grew up on the east coast and after watching this l am
so glad l live out west
your home is beautiful! have you ever travelled the east coast of Canada? i would highly recommend Cape Breton Nova Scotia Summer time or the fall. the Cabot Trail is amazing and was voted one of the most beautiful places in the world by national geographic
Easy overnight parking too! We did this in 2022. So beautiful
Safe travels young man, love watching your videos ❤
Wow you are so brave for camping in Philly.
Right? And then he drives to one of the country’s richest towns to stay in a truck stop 😂
I would have absolute anxiety going thru there. It has been 24 yrs since I went thru atlanta, ga. I couldn't even do tht now forget this place.
Idk if there was a HMMWV in front of it or not, but what you can see is an LMTV. Never in 16 years have I ever locked myself out of a military vehicle. It's practically impossible to do so lol
Live in Rhode Island. Traveling anywhere and doing anything is like almost impossible. Plus many towns have instituted now camping ordinances. New England sucks! Thanks for sharing. Yes.. have stayed in Darion... one of the nicest stops.
Hey ✌🏼 I'm about 30-45 mins outside Phila and yea "Vanlife" out here is just odd to ppl so in their mind you are just homeless 🤷🏼♀️ What can ya do.... But it's def not easy. I dont know anyone out this way so....nice to know ya!!!
✌🏼💙
My man! What kind of gnarly mayo was that? Do you need me to ship you some Dukes? If you haven’t had it, it’s a game changer.
Go to the poconos. It’s a old vacation spot with lots to do and plenty of places to park for the night
I haven't had hot water in a few years so I do sink baths all the time and in summer as in today..I wash my hair outside with the hose.
A friend of mine lives in New Jersey. She said and heard from a few it is to provide employment to the people that are pumping the gas. The first time I encountered it I was outside of my vehicle and very nicely asked to get in my car and the attendent will pump the gas.
Ryan a slow day is always a good thing. Glad to be riding along
That's my life. I live in my minivan in North Carolina. I usually sleep in Craker Barrel or hotels.
Nicest inside redo of a van I’ve ever seen
I lived in a tiny place across the street from a gas station for about 2 year: noisy from fuel delivery in the middle of the night. Lots of trucks coming through.
If you go South there are plenty of places to camp. I live in Louisiana and you can literally pull over and camp as you go down the road.
