I just want you to know I really admire how you live your life. You keep yourself mentally healthy while living in a van. I don't see you experience any depression or anxiety. You deserve a pat on the back. You live by your own rules and are perfectly fine with that.
I like your comment about not passing your old mattress off to some one ..I use to work in a thrift shop and people would try and donate stuff with rat crap ,or super dirty and we would say "we cant take this ' and they would say "poor people would love it " No poor people dont want nasty dirty stuff ,just like any other person
Soooo true!!! People can be so gross. If it’s broken, over used or a super personal item, it’s meant for the dump. Not to mention the folks who have to go through the donations don’t need to have to go through gross stuff either 🤢😷🙄
I have two degrees, but choose to work gig jobs. People judge me and think I’m crazy for doing it, but I don’t care what anyone thinks. I love being able to make my own schedule and take days off whenever I need to. I love the freedom that comes with that. I deal with anxiety and PTSD, so sometimes I need a “mental health break” for a day to two. Not having to ask permission for that or explain my PERSONAL struggles to a boss that doesn’t really give a shit about me…..priceless. I’m hoping to start my vanlife journey relatively soon, and you give me so much inspiration. Thank you for being open and honest with us, and for keeping it REAL. Safe and happy travels, my friend!
So true about job security. I’ve been self-employed for 20 years, ever since my last W-2 job ended, when in 2004 the company owners sold out to a competitor. It was an online retail store, and the entire operation moved from California to Florida. We got three weeks notice-and no severance pay. So I figured, with that kind of security, I may as well just do this on my own. 20 years later, I’m still here, much freer, and happier.
Aloha Scott - You & your videos are such a blessing to many of us. The simplicity of your life puts a lot of things into perspective. Thank you for being a wonderful person both inside & out.
I'm guessing a person w/ nothing better to do commented about a quote I repeated (in quotation marks & author's credit). What a Rude Dude! Thank you Scott for deleting that little bit of ugliness.🥴
I remember back in the day when we lived like this and everyone thought ut was so crazy and we were abusing our kids. Now kids are living their lives and doing well and i am ready to get back to it. I miss all thses places and the rest stops
I grew up in the Tacoma/ Puyallup/ Seattle area. I moved to Georgia a few years ago. There used to be grass fields with horses and cows for miles between Seattle and Tacoma but now it is packed full of people. I used to work for the State of Washington at public schools and a juvenile prison but my job got dangerous so I retired early. I work online jobs only now.
You want to hear something funny? I shopped there for probably six months before I noticed the underpass. I’d grumble about how hard it was to get out of there and then one day found a better exit. Haha
Just one small coffee, the goldilocks of mattresses, federal / felony way and ice cream. Great episode, was especially interested to hear a little more about your background. Yes, I guess we roll with the changes, or move on. I live something of a minimalist / below my means lifestyle in a tiny one bedroom bungalow and am currently mulling over next steps. I find your tone and content very helpful. Thank you.
Scott. I can learn from your discreet approach to subjects… better than being an open book. At the same time it’s healthy to share. STAY SAFE OUT THERE
An interesting history. Life does take some strange turns. I Admire how you have sorted things out and moved onward. You have adapted and drawn on both your creativity, coping skills and a knack for self sufficiency to shape your new lifescape. Thank you for sharing how its worked for you. It helps other people find clarity and direction in their lives too.
I agree, work is work. We don't need a title. I'm not a fan of the heat either. I'm working towards living this lifestyle. Love your videos. I was so happy to see a video on Thursday night. ❤
Your neighborhood birds sound a lot like my neighborhood birds. Great update. Appreciated the work thread - fills in some of the picture I’d developed over time.
I've worked at so many things and your only goal should be staying happy at what you like to do. So keep on doing you! I love working different jobs because I don't like getting bored.
I share your point of view about work - A job is just a means to an end. To take it a step further, you work in order to live and not the other way around.
Life is a journey, thanks for sharing. I was told by an older gentleman that worked in a hot factory that he always drank a hot beverage when it was hot because it made his outside cooler.
It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. I much prefer to discuss national forests and hiking areas. Hopefully there will more questions regarding nature and less about boring work.

The fact your van is white will no doubt help keep you cool. Mine is dark gray and heats up like an oven in this weather. I have aircon but the engine needs to be running so I stay at home where it's cool and thankfully my place of work has air con so we are okay there. I have watched pretty much every video you put out since 2018 and you help relax me.
Yes, white paint and no windows were my top priorities when I bought this van. I’m lucky to have gotten both. Thanks for the kind words and for watching all these years. It means a lot.
So true no jobs are secure. I smile how you say it's warm 83 degrees. I use to live in Berkeley California which was 58 to 60 every day Now I live in San antonio texas 103 degree weather every day. It took me a few weeks to adjust. It's dry heat and I lost my winter cadavre skin color. I know people love winter but I had enough of new jersey blizzards and cold cruel winters
I’ve lived most of my life in the desert. Working outside in 115° (on the cooler days) wasn’t fun. When the weather gets slightly warm, I get flashbacks to those days
You are awesome. I respect your individuaized thinking, and living for yourself and not doing what others think you should do. I am the same way. Been self employed for 20 plus years. No regrets. ❤❤❤
I have always had a problem finding a mattress for my van thanks for the tip. Your blog has always given such great ideas, keep it up thanks. Fred Meyers who would have thought.
I think I found your channel when you still lived up there. Maybe. But whenever it was, I'm glad that happened. It is LOVELY up there. Glad you got a new mattress on your new bed, better sleep makes a better life.
Thank you for sharing something that is unpleasant for you to talk about regardless of the reason. I worked in the healthcare field and I can’t tell you how many people over the years moved on due to changes that they didn’t feel was right. Basically they wanted to live and work on their own terms when and if they were able. I have really enjoyed listening to your videos as with my migraines sometimes watching them can be agonizing. Safe travels.
Thanks for showing us around your old home town(s). We have friends that used to live in Tacoma. They live in Kennewick now. So happy you got a new mattress! We got foam like that for our van too, but since my husband works at a furniture store we ordered it through there. We don't have a Fred Myers nearby! 😊 They had quite a selection! 👍 Also, how could you forget about your ice-cream on a hot day?! .....even though it's not coffee. ☺️
I've been waiting for a video like this, Scott, and watching your channel since you left Seattle a couple years ago, I always wondered how you were making money in your vanlife journey. This all makes sense. I agree with your views on jobs, etc. Seattle looks great this time of year.
Thanks for showing Marlene's. I haven't been back to Federal Way in a few years, and I'm not sure when I'll be back in that area, but when I do I'm definitely going to stop there.
It's been in the 90's in Wisconsin for several weeks. Especially difficult if it's humid and doesn't cool down at night for sleeping. I drink Gatorade when really hot and humid. It puts electrolytes into your body. It also comes powdered in a can that you can mix in regular water yourself. Plus I drink over a gallon of water a day. I have difficulty with hot weather also. It rained last night and cooled off some for today. When one door closed another opens. Take care of yourself. Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
Scott, I just saw your video of your old stomping grounds in the Puyallup and Federal Way (Felony Way) LOL areas. I work in the Kent area and like to sneak off to Saltwater Park whenever possible. I find it to be a nice peaceful place when not busy, like mid week. There are so many nice places in the “Seattle/Tacoma region that it’s easy to find places like Saltwater Park that aren’t far but make you feel like you’re miles away. Hope you’re enjoying the weather. Cheers!!
Scott you keep going to all my places! I was born in Tacoma, raised in Puyallup, lived 30 years in Shelton. I know where the Fred Meyer is, used to be called HiHo in the 60's. I picked raspberries for Pichas as a kid, and blueberries for Fazios. Still have family there. Moving back to Shelton soon from Skagit County up north. A l l those warehouses used to be farmland! Kind of sad.
I gave this video a chance based upon my desire to learn more about funding this particular lifestyle which I somewhat enjoyed in my raw (unfinished/converted in any way from factory) cargo van for a year... but I smoked so much pot during the wonderful narrative experience3 (I clicked back a few times) that I must have missed what you do for money! lol Much love to all vanlifers, and stay hungry (as Twisted Sister says, lol) , bro!
A trip down memory lane, Scot. Such a beautiful like you are leaving in your van. My wife says hi and wishes you the very best. Love your commentary. Please make sure to ask your followers to subscribe and to share your youtube channel.
100%. No job is reliable. That's been my experience as well. Finding a trade you enjoy and working for yourself is probably the most reliable. But then you have marketing and lead generation to get work. So actually, you are correct. Nothing is truly reliable. I'm a dog trainer by trade and I deal with the same stuff. At least I really enjoy what I do and have the best clients on earth because they all love their dogs. May God bless you abundantly and guard you fiercely in all your ways!

I've never been to the North West of the USA. I live in the UK and I sort of suspect that Washington State has similar weather to the UK. People characterise it as being very rainy, but there are probably a lot of sunny days in Washington State and that is also true of the UK. I wonder if you have done any videos about life in your van on very rainy days (when they do happen). I think I'd enjoy that. I actually enjoy being in motorhomes in rainy weather, I have rented motorhomes in the past for holidays and found myself in rainy weather, but found I quite enjoyed myself. Rain here in the UK is usually not very heavy, so you can still go out and do stuff, but you need a dry place to return to.
I’m originally from a desert so the rain is welcome. I have a couple of videos that are about being in my van in the rain: ruclips.net/video/lX_vL3Xbzog/видео.html
So many corporations and sports teams are leaving California and moving to Nevada that Reno and Vegas are growing like crazy, we have lots of warehousing too. Enjoy your summer. 😊
You’re sure right about the job thing. It’s an almost sure bet that businesses change every 10yrs, if not every 5yrs. It’s a rare thing to expect to stay at any job location beyond that. And truth be told, it’ll only get less secure with the changing times. To be honest, in general, I think we’re living in the few remaining years of the Information Age, as we are on the skirts of coming into the AI Age. And, although there are still so many countries and civilizations that have never even seen such simple Technolgies as a microwave, this world is rapidly changing. To me, this is why I feel it’s so important to just do your best on a daily basis, and simply enjoy every waking moment…because one thing is for sure, time stops for no one. So, like a broken record…don’t sweat the small stuff. Live and let live. Influence one another in the best way possible, and let bygones be bygones. See life as being too short, and not never ending…cause it will all end sooner than you think✌️🕊
Ok Scott. Great update But! Tacoma is her own bedroom community. Way more impressive than Seattle! And Puyallup leads to hwy 410 and all the best escapes. When you're ready to explore say hi and we take ya round town....
this cracks me up.. I was born and raised in Tacoma.. and when I moved out to Michigan, I really referred to Seattle a lot more than I said Tacoma, because people were so clueless.. but seriously, Tacoma is not a small town and goodness gracious they should know by now
It took me forever to realize Tacoma is virtually unknown. I also find it funny that Vancouver WA residents claim to live in Portland. None of it makes sense. Haha
Will always Brave to attempt to live your life on your own terms and I applaud you for that. One note in your commentary about Rainier it is not a mountain it is a volcano just so you know if you don't.
Hello again Scott; unless they name some new model of a car or truck 'Seattle' :) I know Washington State quite well: I've lived in Seattle; Vancouver; Spokane; and in Pullman!
I lived in Seattle in the 90’s, Everett, Mukilteo, Silver Lake, Renton. We used to call Tacoma “the aroma.” 😅 The area has become so crowded! Thanks for the visual tour.
That’s the first time I’ve heard Federal Way called a ‘nice little town’ 😂 That Marlene’s actually started out as our only REI location for the longest time.
I just want you to know I really admire how you live your life. You keep yourself mentally healthy while living in a van. I don't see you experience any depression or anxiety. You deserve a pat on the back. You live by your own rules and are perfectly fine with that.
Living in an apt is more likely to breed depression. We live in "sick buildings".

It’s odd how small your van looks from the outside but when you’re in it, it looks pretty spacious.
That oddity is something I still haven’t gotten over after all these years. But the van is a Tardis
Aloha Scott - You & your videos are such a blessing to many of us. The simplicity of your life puts a lot of things into perspective. Thank you for being a wonderful person both inside & out.

Olympia is nice! I’m in Mt Hood OR, originally from Long Beach CA.

Shopped Fred Meyers when I lived in Salt Lake City :))
Oh cool, didn’t know they were out there
You’re sure right about the job thing.
I really enjoy watching your laid back channel Scott,i admire your approah to life Keep on smiling

Held us in work suspense 👍💖
Not purposely.
Thanks!
Hey Thanks so much, Kat!
Ok Scott. Great update But! Tacoma is her own bedroom community. Way more impressive than Seattle!
And Puyallup leads to hwy 410 and all the best escapes. When you're ready to explore say hi and we take ya round town....
It makes me laugh a little when you say it's a little warm....I live in Houston, 107 degree summers.
Where I grew up 107° is a cool summer day. I can’t handle those temperatures anymore though
@@StaticCamperVan where'd you grow up? I thought Houston was probably one of the hottest places there was.
Southern California desert
this cracks me up..
"The Goldilocks of Mattresses". Love it! You should patent that phrase, then sell it to an emerging new mattress company.
I lived in Seattle in the 90’s, Everett, Mukilteo, Silver Lake, Renton. We used to call Tacoma “the aroma.” 😅 The area has become so crowded! Thanks for the visual tour.
Tacoma aroma 😂
Very beautiful in Seattle lately
Craving cake...Goldilocks mattress lol
I think Port of Seattle down right now
Is it? That could cause some problems
❤This looks like a nice neighborhood!👍
That’s the first time I’ve heard Federal Way called a ‘nice little town’ 😂 That Marlene’s actually started out as our only REI location for the longest time.
Oh cool. Call me crazy, I rather like Federal way 😂
