Oh and this is Jen who once was wanderingk9 but my phone was hacked and all my apps/accounts/ Passwords compromised as well as my Apple ID password being changed!! It was the strangest thing (even Apple and ATT couldn’t understand why said hacker did what he/she did). Still waiting for my phone to be wiped and possibly restored to my most recent back up but in order to continue to be able to be connected to the rest of the world I had to start from scratch, new phone, new FB, new RUclips and the list goes on! Nature does help that I struggle with that too sometimes, you may try a google search there are probably parks or area's close to you that you may not know of, I just found a huge park I never knew was there and it's only 15 minutes away. Hope you find a relaxation place
@@tidelinetoalpine I deal with that too. In my life I always wonder if I am doing enough to be successful, and not living up to it has gotten me in a depressed state. I always find these kind of videos interesting and wonder if this is the path I should take. As a introvert I value peace and being alone. I can picture me living in a ford eccoline and just parking somewhere at night and working a 9-5. I don't have to go back to school and get a degree to make money, I am saving so much just living in a van now. The money goals I had can be accomplished without doing anything I don't want to do. I don't plan on it being a longterm thing but if I were to commit to it, I think i can save money and buy land then enjoy the proccess of saving to buy a trailer and I get the peace , solitude, and nature...plus the knowing I accomplished something that few could.
Everyone asks me these 2 first questions: 1. Where do you live? 2. What do you do for a living? If I'm honest, they are put off, and suddenly, I'm of less value. I like living in my SUV, I hate working to pay rent ( basically buying a house for a stranger). Can't stand co- workers. Feel more strongly led to living simply.
So crazy because I'm preparing to hit the road & as a dancer (the sexy kind) I know I'm going to get this question alot on the road & been wondering how to answer because I know it sounds kinda crazy 🤷🏼♀️ ohhh I'm just staying in my vehicle.. I was recently debating with a customer who said he hates road trips & prefers to fly. I personally would prefer just get in my car & drive just about anywhere & can't stand flying.. he was going in & on about why won't I just fly & staying at rest stops is dangerous. That was just for short trips I've taken. I have a hard time with this mindset so would rather avoid over explaining..
Funny how people THINK. It automatically chucks you into the homeless category w/o doing drugs under a bridge.😂 The less you say, the better; or change the conversation... you're on your way somewhere.
$41 a month on one cup of coffee a day is a lot even if only purchasing one cup a week out. jezzz. i drink a pot a day at home and don’t spend near $41 a month

Got hooked on van life videos during the pandemic. I've always been frugal so I finally took the leap, sold all my stuff and moved into my car. It's been 7 weeks so far and Ive made it from Portland, OR to Orlando, FL. Next I"m headed up the East Coast and may shift to a hybrid housesitting/carlife situation but who knows?! It's that every day is different that I love the most. Thank you for sharing!
You my friend have balls I want. I am super impulsive but also fearful but this shit sounds like it may be a great path. I would still work a 9-5, just have a eccoline van thats liveable for summer and winter. I would drive to random spots to relax then go to work.
@@iaintgonlie7858 It can work! The surprise ending to my trip was that I moved to my Mother's hometown in Upstate NY which was in no way one of the possibilities I saw at the beginning of my trip! I now have 2 jobs and the Subaru I had hit 215,00 miles and no joke, the morning after I moved into my apartment it started smoking with a. radiator leak. 2 mechanics later and both recommended not putting money into fixing it and then miracle of miracles- the first place I went to check out cars had the same car but 9 years younger (2015), in perfect shape, also manual transmission and only 55,000 miles!!! 😀 I say take the risk- you never know where you are going to end up but I'm pretty happy with how my story is progressing. I also recommend reading The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer.
Amanda, this video helped me SO much. I recently retired after thirty years of social work. I put my adult life on hold for so long. I have developed habits that are robbing me (coffee shops). I have been worried that I need to find another job. Never thinking about living more frugally and avoiding that. I really appreciate everything you said!! Love you and your channel. I was an Orphan as a child, 16 years of group homes and foster homes, and as an adult Ive been unable to start a family, so now at 44 im ready to just finish of my life on an epic adventure. I was given up for adoption at birth. One of six sisters. I have yet to meet the two oldest. Maybe this week I will meet one of them. I am 58 yrs old now. My sisters are all over 60 but one younger.

Its weird talking to them, they say stuff like, "my mom", and it really lets you understand that while we might be blood, we'll never be family. Its not their fault it just is what it is. I've moved on from that now and just try to look forward. Hope you and your sisters where able to connect.
I haven't been on the road for 10 yrs but this is my 7th yr boondocking in the wilderness full time in my van. No camp grounds, no motels. I've also been a therapist for over 40 yrs.

I liked your formula for doing budgeting. I quit getting a sweet tea 7 nights a week, 365 days a yr for $2. I own an acre and half on the outskirts of a small town in SC. I built a small 12x20 cabin. I don't work a regular job. I have a 2000 truck w 400,000 miles on it and took a part time job for 5-6 months. Bring home was about $280 a week. I also had a cleaning thing where I made $500 a month.. I decided I needed a more reliable vehicle. I bought a 1999 mercury van w 74,000 miles, mint condition. Paid $3500. I borrowed $2500 from a friend and gave her $250 every week for 10 weeks and then quit that job. My bills are about $250 a month. $62 phone, $80 electric and 84$ car insurance. I don't have alot of savings. If I need money I'll pick up a job for awhile and stash the cash. I do things for friends as well. Gardening for an elderly lady who can't get around well anymore. And another elderly neighbor friend I help haul off trash and clean up around the house and property. I like freedom and doing what I want with my time. My place is full of gardens now and I just bought a pool. $439 for a 18ft x 4 saltwater above ground from Sam's. Then 4 bags of salt and a rechargeable vacuum for $125. I dipped into my small savings. Usually I save up before I buy. That helps with making decisions on buying things. I was blessed with enough opportunities of hauling mulch, unloading mulch, farm sitting for a week and cleaning a lake house so it can be put on the market all in a weeks time. I was able to pay myself back. I get invited to different peoples houses to eat so I don't go hungry. Food is so expensive now and I'm not on any govt assistance. If I want something I work for it. I have been thinking about sharing my land with a tent, car or van camper. Maybe $150-200 a month and some help on my homestead. Pulling weeds or planting stuff. I'll share my garden harvest and eggs from my chickens. I have 2 kayaks and a paddle board to share too. I'm close to Lake Murray and Lake Monticello and several rivers. (Broad, Saluda, Congaree) I'm in Chapin SC.
Why no government assistance? You paid taxes thus are entitled to it...unless things are infinitely different in the US, which is of course a possibility & shows I am a total ignorant, woops!

I'm 70 yrs old, and whether you live on the road or not, if ppl could understand and apply these simple financial concepts, they would find so much financial freedom. I figured these same ones out in my 20s, out of necessity, and they have served me well all my life. Writing down EVERYTHING you buy in a month (or better 3 months) is a real eye opener. You may think you know, but the truth is you probably don't realize how much you're spending on little incidental things.

@@melaniefayeanderson8947 budget budget budget stick to the budget except for emergencies. be willing to remove everything from the budget that isn't essential. you have to experience that you can live without. include savings in the monthly budget. it isn't so much the way you do it.. it's growing the discipline to do it.

I've been working since I was 5yrs old and could effectively wield a hoe. I recently made a change to my schedule so that I work 4 days and have 3 off. Really good video, with positive information on money matters. I recently retired from the Air Force with an E8 status. So my retirement pay is very doable, I have never owned a house and have no desire to go in debt for 30 years. I always lived on base when I was in the military. So I became a nomad, my rig is a 2004 17 foot Casita camper being pulled by a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. I generally boon dock but do camp at campgrounds associated with military bases. They are very affordable and usually let you stay past 30 days in the off-season. I did purchase a small piece of property in southern Alabama to use as a future home base. And this property is listed as a year round off-grid residence. I didn't think i was going to work after I retired because my retirement pension is pretty decent, but I found a job in southern Texas that is called a Gate Keeper, basically it's working in a guard shack checking in trucks going into an petroleum supply company. It paid $30 an hour, it was 12 hour shift, 7 days a week and you had to commit to a 90 day contract. If you fulfilled the contract, there was a nice bonus at the end. I made enough money off this one job to travel the rest of the year and not touch my pension.....
Out of all the comments yours is the most wise of situations my young man is planning on retiring as well and he can get a home loan but this is frugal and wise for later in life for him ! Ty for sharing your story!
Now this is a person about Van Life not a RUclipsr doing Van Life. Big difference, I was watching a video about ''why everyone is quiting van life'' and clearly they were just youtubers that pivoted their content. They maybe made enough money to do something else but they definitely saw Van Life as a adventure for content. True Van Life people want to make it work longterm. They can still be working a 9-5 and van life is them. The RUclipsr trend is just folks trying to get online fame or money temporarily while they can. There goals is not peace or enjoying nature or even the grind of saving, they want to explore and document. When you said you started before youtube I knew you were a real one.
What Ive learnt after 5 years of "vanlife" is that I have the kind of free time that only millonaires have the luxury of. Sure there are things I can't afford to do but that is a very small price to pay to not be a slave to the money system doing a job 40 hours a week that makes me miserable. So it has come as a huge surprise to me that my Ad on marketplace offering help for others who want to build something got exactly zero genuine interest. People would rather be at work all the time to rent in a share house they are hardly ever at because they are at work to pay for it instead of living in a van or truck which blows my mind. Your whole life changes when you measure the cost of things in time, You want me to work how many hours to buy X thing....Suddenly I dont want a lot of things like I used to :)
Millionaires don't have the luxury of free time, 😂.. it's very difficult to become a millionaire and is life consuming, unless your idea of a millionaire is just being handed a million dollars.. which is very rare
You're gonna grow old with no ability to care for yourself, no savings, no nest egg, no emergency fund.. all you're doing is prolonging the inevitable, and choosing to work in your old age

Very smart advice with your choices in this life. I moved into my van 2 years ago and following my dream of being a full time artist. It’s fast coming to fruition after 2 years of figuring a lot of my life out. On the flip side, had I not taken this plunge, I’d still be paying someone else’s mortgage and complaining about how hard I’m working. Since the 90’s , whenever I was asked what I do for a living, I’ve answered “as little as possible for the most money !” I agree with your calculations for annual costs of addictions and other daily purchases. I quit drinking and was able to fly anywhere in the world once or twice a year ! Like you my priority is freedom and mobility ❤️🙏✌️💥I subscribed so I can follow your journey and stay inspired to get another Van (I’ve had 4 since 1990 ) and also stay “resourceful” as I like to call it ! I like your two ways of analyzing a purchase, cost over time, and cost per use. It's not that I wasn't familiar with those ways of thinking, it's that I don't apply them on a regular basis. I like the way you interspersed shots where you're talking directly to the camera and others where you just continue your comments while we look a beautiful landscapes. I'm in my 60's and I have a few disabilities that require meds that are either hard to afford or require monthly doc visits, but I've been trying to figure out how I can have the thing I've wanted all my life, but never had....freedom. So yeah, I admire what you're doing a whole lot. One more thing. Where is this? The scenery on this video is amazing...and I live on the Olympic peninsula! Beautiful. This is such a needed talk. Reminds me of things I've been through to. Twelve years ago I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day...at $7 ish a pack I was somewhere around $400 a month! That's right!!!! I said no more and after a 40 YEAR HABIT I quit, cold turkey and suffered for about two weeks BUT I quit with no help. (I was the weakest person in my group). Also had a wine habit...a bottle a day...$200 a month at least! It was an addiction for sure BUT I QUIT! Now I allow myself a 12 pack a beer a month. No Starbucks, rarely eat out. Fix my own meals so my health and bank account are happy while I get to do more things. When a person is smoking, drinking, etc., tell me they are broke and oh how hard their life is, I'm sorry but my empathy goes right out the window.
Same. People whinging about rising costs and being broke but eat/order out all the time, bars etc get no empathy and that's a large part of population. Wants before needs and never hold themselves accountable.
I need to quit smoking. I switched to American Spirits in my 20's and my lungs stopped hurting. Unfortunately, they cost $15/pack now. I don't drink, I don't eat fast food, I barely eat sweets. Smoking is the one thing I struggle to give up. I am going to use Chantix this time because I know several people who successfully quit. I would never judge someone for struggling with an addiction. I do judge people for eating out every meal or shopping for unnecessary items all the time and complaining about being broke. Maybe that's not fair because shopping can be an addiction.
Why would your empathy go out of the window of you yourself struggled with the same thing for years. Such a silly way to put something or talk about a random encounter you probably never have. I'm happy you are sober tho. Congratulations man that shit ain't easy and I'm happy your life is better. Peace

Hi Amanda I really enjoy your videos . Living in middle Europe things are different. For me it is easier to find a way to live nearly rent free than effort a vehicle. For me wanting a nomadic life in a VAN is luxury . I can't effort buying a van that do not break apart in half a year. So I watch your videos and wait for opportunities to come. And it will! The US is the most soul sucking and spiritually voided places I've ever lived. The people are literally programmed to think a good life is lost of date to pay for an illusion of materialistic happiness. No wonder the violence and mental health are so bad there.
Watching this is helping me tremendously. I'm about to start living on the road in about a month and I have some fears. I was a road hippie back in the 90s. It's been a long time since I've lived nomadically. But I'm also elated at finally getting away from the corporate world which made me so miserable for so long. You're helping me remember what's possible.

Kids' backpacks for school are high cost/use. They seem to last only a year. So I bought my kids these odd little canvas bags with pack straps and we still have them and use them a decade later. The teachers thought they were too small and non-conforming. It was a compromise and worked well for us, which is what counts.

Another common mistake vanlife novices make is thinking they need to cram a miniature version of their sticks-n-bricks home into their rig. Showers, toilets & kitchen sinks are expensive & hog a lot of living space in a vehicle. These things take more h20 & require holding tanks & regular dumping, plus the weight of all this is something to consider. Be willing to do things differently. Living the nomad life is a positive lifestyle change, so try to think out of the b-n-sticks box. Living with a Less is More philosophy anotherwords can help ppl, whether they live on the road or not. It saves $ & helps the planet.

People would be so shocked to learn how little my husband and I spend given our lifestyle. We live in a nice suburb where most couples both work and don’t live as well as we do on one salary. Like you, I compare what my money gets me. Example, I do my own nails because that equals a cruise every year. One thing most van lifers don’t share in finance videos (I’m only halfway through yours, so you may yet) is retirement planning. I watch so many spreadsheet breakdowns and very rarely see a line item for retirement investment. I realize some people may have a large nest egg (401K converted ro IRA or something) that’s earning their retirement in the background. I’m obsessive about having enough to live on, so.. I always wonder.
In a sense you’ve turned yourself into a member of the “greatest generation”. Our great grandparents/grandparents who were the generation that learned to live during the Great Depression.

I am living my best life on my small pension and saving money every month. Financial freedom on a pension income and it's guaranteed until I leave this earth. Living in this amazing country and the province of BC, I also get a subsidy for half of my small apartment rent, a bus pass for $45 a year, and other wonderful benefits. I could work but staying under the income limit to keep these benefits, I prefer volunteering to help others. Frugal is the way to go.

I spent 14 yrs fulltime boondocking on the road and it will always be my best memories now !!....... I found a small business that did very well in Flea-markets....craft fairs/shows....Campgrounds and even on just the side of the road alot of times........ Boondocking saves so much and once you have completely gotten a grasp on it and have a few things to really make it comfortable and self sustaining you will enjoy it so much !!!......I will say I did my journey in a 25' Class A so it had room to stand and move with bath , Kitchen & living area......the bed was a Drop down up front
@@mitruther3183 I actually carved signs.....sold wind chimes.....hats..T-shirts...socks......it depended on the area , I now only travel in the summer and make farmhouse furniture...beds...night stands and farm tables .....you just have to use your imagination and follow the better markets !!
I just come across your page , i've been looking into the van life due to me retiring from doing concrete work rightnow i live off a certain amount of retirement pay from a disability and being 64 yrs old so anyway ive come to this conclusion ... im single , my kids are all grown and gone and living their lives now , i have a golden retriever that has become my best friend and my rock , ive got really no bills beside rent , insurance , phone , food , and day to day things and more and more i look at the van life and really can only see one reason why i wouldn't pull the trigger on starting that type of journey .. so anyway i would do this trye of thing only if i had a partner , a woman i could share that life with , we would share the van and space and it would be so much more enjoyable with someone you enjoy their company ...... i haven't given up on finding the right woman , the right van ......

Very insightful video with a lot of practical advice. 10 years is a very long time for van life, but it's where you find your Zen. So you live your life according to how to sustain that Zen. We substitute our lives for job security, which is understandable but not very fulfilling. But also for companionship and a sense of community. You being able to spend most of your life in quiet solitude in beautiful surroundings is something you are able to do. I think that is very special. I love to see retired senior ladies meeting up and finally doing what's always been in their hearts to do, too. Hope you get well. Wear layers and warm wrap around scarves for your nose and mouth inside and outside your van when you're sick. BTW, I did my own calculation on how much I spend on coffee & creamer a year= $176. And that's only because I make it myself every morning😉.

@@tidelinetoalpine I deal with that too. In my life I always wonder if I am doing enough to be successful, and not living up to it has gotten me in a depressed state. I always find these kind of videos interesting and wonder if this is the path I should take. As a introvert I value peace and being alone. I can picture me living in a ford eccoline and just parking somewhere at night and working a 9-5. I don't have to go back to school and get a degree to make money, I am saving so much just living in a van now. The money goals I had can be accomplished without doing anything I don't want to do. I don't plan on it being a longterm thing but if I were to commit to it, I think i can save money and buy land then enjoy the proccess of saving to buy a trailer and I get the peace , solitude, and nature...plus the knowing I accomplished something that few could.
Everyone asks me these 2 first questions: 1. Where do you live? 2. What do you do for a living? If I'm honest, they are put off, and suddenly, I'm of less value. I like living in my SUV, I hate working to pay rent ( basically buying a house for a stranger). Can't stand co- workers. Feel more strongly led to living simply.

I was recently debating with a customer who said he hates road trips & prefers to fly. I personally would prefer just get in my car & drive just about anywhere & can't stand flying.. he was going in & on about why won't I just fly & staying at rest stops is dangerous. That was just for short trips I've taken. I have a hard time with this mindset so would rather avoid over explaining..

Got hooked on van life videos during the pandemic. I've always been frugal so I finally took the leap, sold all my stuff and moved into my car. It's been 7 weeks so far and Ive made it from Portland, OR to Orlando, FL. Next I"m headed up the East Coast and may shift to a hybrid housesitting/carlife situation but who knows?! It's that every day is different that I love the most. Thank you for sharing!

I now have 2 jobs and the Subaru I had hit 215,00 miles and no joke, the morning after I moved into my apartment it started smoking with a. radiator leak. 2 mechanics later and both recommended not putting money into fixing it and then miracle of miracles- the first place I went to check out cars had the same car but 9 years younger (2015), in perfect shape, also manual transmission and only 55,000 miles!!! 😀
I say take the risk- you never know where you are going to end up but I'm pretty happy with how my story is progressing. I also recommend reading The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer.

I was given up for adoption at birth. One of six sisters. I have yet to meet the two oldest. Maybe this week I will meet one of them. I am 58 yrs old now. My sisters are all over 60 but one younger.

Its weird talking to them, they say stuff like, "my mom", and it really lets you understand that while we might be blood, we'll never be family. Its not their fault it just is what it is. I liked your formula for doing budgeting. I quit getting a sweet tea 7 nights a week, 365 days a yr for $2.
I own an acre and half on the outskirts of a small town in SC. I built a small 12x20 cabin. I don't work a regular job. I have a 2000 truck w 400,000 miles on it and took a part time job for 5-6 months. Bring home was about $280 a week. I also had a cleaning thing where I made $500 a month.. I decided I needed a more reliable vehicle. I bought a 1999 mercury van w 74,000 miles, mint condition. Paid $3500. I borrowed $2500 from a friend and gave her $250 every week for 10 weeks and then quit that job. My bills are about $250 a month. $62 phone, $80 electric and 84$ car insurance. I don't have alot of savings. If I need money I'll pick up a job for awhile and stash the cash. I do things for friends as well. Gardening for an elderly lady who can't get around well anymore. And another elderly neighbor friend I help haul off trash and clean up around the house and property.
I like freedom and doing what I want with my time. My place is full of gardens now and I just bought a pool. $439 for a 18ft x 4 saltwater above ground from Sam's. Then 4 bags of salt and a rechargeable vacuum for $125. I dipped into my small savings. Usually I save up before I buy. That helps with making decisions on buying things. I was blessed with enough opportunities of hauling mulch, unloading mulch, farm sitting for a week and cleaning a lake house so it can be put on the market all in a weeks time. I was able to pay myself back. I get invited to different peoples houses to eat so I don't go hungry. Food is so expensive now and I'm not on any govt assistance. If I want something I work for it. I have been thinking about sharing my land with a tent, car or van camper. Maybe $150-200 a month and some help on my homestead. Pulling weeds or planting stuff. I'll share my garden harvest and eggs from my chickens. I have 2 kayaks and a paddle board to share too. I'm close to Lake Murray and Lake Monticello and several rivers. (Broad, Saluda, Congaree) I'm in Chapin SC.
Why no government assistance? You paid taxes thus are entitled to it...unless things are infinitely different in the US, which is of course a possibility & shows I am a total ignorant, woops!

I'm 70 yrs old, and whether you live on the road or not, if ppl could understand and apply these simple financial concepts, they would find so much financial freedom. I figured these same ones out in my 20s, out of necessity, and they have served me well all my life. Writing down EVERYTHING you buy in a month (or better 3 months) is a real eye opener. You may think you know, but the truth is you probably don't realize how much you're spending on little incidental things.

Really good video, with positive information on money matters. I recently retired from the Air Force with an E8 status. So my retirement pay is very doable, I have never owned a house and have no desire to go in debt for 30 years. I always lived on base when I was in the military. So I became a nomad, my rig is a 2004 17 foot Casita camper being pulled by a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. I generally boon dock but do camp at campgrounds associated with military bases. They are very affordable and usually let you stay past 30 days in the off-season. I did purchase a small piece of property in southern Alabama to use as a future home base. And this property is listed as a year round off-grid residence. I didn't think i was going to work after I retired because my retirement pension is pretty decent, but I found a job in southern Texas that is called a Gate Keeper, basically it's working in a guard shack checking in trucks going into an petroleum supply company. It paid $30 an hour, it was 12 hour shift, 7 days a week and you had to commit to a 90 day contract. If you fulfilled the contract, there was a nice bonus at the end. I made enough money off this one job to travel the rest of the year and not touch my pension.....

Now this is a person about Van Life not a RUclipsr doing Van Life. Big difference, I was watching a video about ''why everyone is quiting van life'' and clearly they were just youtubers that pivoted their content. They maybe made enough money to do something else but they definitely saw Van Life as a adventure for content. True Van Life people want to make it work longterm. They can still be working a 9-5 and van life is them. The RUclipsr trend is just folks trying to get online fame or money temporarily while they can. There goals is not peace or enjoying nature or even the grind of saving, they want to explore and document. When you said you started before youtube I knew you were a real one.

What Ive learnt after 5 years of "vanlife" is that I have the kind of free time that only millonaires have the luxury of. Sure there are things I can't afford to do but that is a very small price to pay to not be a slave to the money system doing a job 40 hours a week that makes me miserable. So it has come as a huge surprise to me that my Ad on marketplace offering help for others who want to build something got exactly zero genuine interest. People would rather be at work all the time to rent in a share house they are hardly ever at because they are at work to pay for it instead of living in a van or truck which blows my mind. Your whole life changes when you measure the cost of things in time, You want me to work how many hours to buy X thing....Suddenly I dont want a lot of things like I used to :)
Millionaires don't have the luxury of free time, 😂.. it's very difficult to become a millionaire and is life consuming, unless your idea of a millionaire is just being handed a million dollars.. which is very rare
You're gonna grow old with no ability to care for yourself, no savings, no nest egg, no emergency fund.. all you're doing is prolonging the inevitable, and choosing to work in your old age

Very smart advice with your choices in this life. I moved into my van 2 years ago and following my dream of being a full time artist. It’s fast coming to fruition after 2 years of figuring a lot of my life out. On the flip side, had I not taken this plunge, I’d still be paying someone else’s mortgage and complaining about how hard I’m working.
Most people don’t want to give up 1 or 2 luxuries for a more fulfilling life, in the long run.

I quit drinking and was able to fly anywhere in the world once or twice a year ! I'm in my 60's and I have a few disabilities that require meds that are either hard to afford or require monthly doc visits, but I've been trying to figure out how I can have the thing I've wanted all my life, but never had....freedom. This is such a needed talk. Reminds me of things I've been through to. Twelve years ago I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day...at $7 ish a pack I was somewhere around $400 a month! That's right!!!! I said no more and after a 40 YEAR HABIT I quit, cold turkey and suffered for about two weeks BUT I quit with no help. (I was the weakest person in my group). Also had a wine habit...a bottle a day...$200 a month at least! It was an addiction for sure BUT I QUIT! Now I allow myself a 12 pack a beer a month. No Starbucks, rarely eat out. Fix my own meals so my health and bank account are happy while I get to do more things. When a person is smoking, drinking, etc., tell me they are broke and oh how hard their life is, I'm sorry but my empathy goes right out the window.
Same. People whinging about rising costs and being broke but eat/order out all the time, bars etc get no empathy and that's a large part of population. Wants before needs and never hold themselves accountable.

I need to quit smoking. I switched to American Spirits in my 20's and my lungs stopped hurting. Unfortunately, they cost $15/pack now. I don't drink, I don't eat fast food, I barely eat sweets. Smoking is the one thing I struggle to give up. I am going to use Chantix this time because I know several people who successfully quit. I would never judge someone for struggling with an addiction. I do judge people for eating out every meal or shopping for unnecessary items all the time and complaining about being broke. Maybe that's not fair because shopping can be an addiction.
Why would your empathy go out of the window of you yourself struggled with the same thing for years. Such a silly way to put something or talk about a random encounter you probably never have. Great video to help people along. I’ve always kept a diary of what I spent every single day for the last 30 years. It lets me know what I spend each month which is about 2800. I live on a shoestring. I make a lot more than that, so anybody can do it.great advice for everyone

I really enjoy your videos . Living in middle Europe things are different. For me it is easier to find a way to live nearly rent free than effort a vehicle.
For me wanting a nomadic life in a VAN is luxury . I can't effort buying a van that do not break apart in half a year. So I watch your videos and wait for opportunities to come. And it will!

The US is the most soul sucking and spiritually voided places I've ever lived. The people are literally programmed to think a good life is lost of date to pay for an illusion of materialistic happiness. No wonder the violence and mental health are so bad there.

Watching this is helping me tremendously. I'm about to start living on the road in about a month and I have some fears. I was a road hippie back in the 90s. It's been a long time since I've lived nomadically. But I'm also elated at finally getting away from the corporate world which made me so miserable for so long. You're helping me remember what's possible.

Kids' backpacks for school are high cost/use. They seem to last only a year. So I bought my kids these odd little canvas bags with pack straps and we still have them and use them a decade later. The teachers thought they were too small and non-conforming. It was a compromise and worked well for us, which is what counts.

YT has made people think of $80k van builds when they hear “vanlife”, and I hate that.
It sucks because people will believe it’s a expensive or unattainable lifestyle which couldn’t be further from the truth
Another common mistake vanlife novices make is thinking they need to cram a miniature version of their sticks-n-bricks home into their rig. Showers, toilets & kitchen sinks are expensive & hog a lot of living space in a vehicle. These things take more h20 & require holding tanks & regular dumping, plus the weight of all this is something to consider. Be willing to do things differently. Living the nomad life is a positive lifestyle change, so try to think out of the b-n-sticks box.
Living with a Less is More philosophy anotherwords can help ppl, whether they live on the road or not. It saves $ & helps the planet.

People would be so shocked to learn how little my husband and I spend given our lifestyle. We live in a nice suburb where most couples both work and don’t live as well as we do on one salary. Like you, I compare what my money gets me. Example, I do my own nails because that equals a cruise every year.
One thing most van lifers don’t share in finance videos (I’m only halfway through yours, so you may yet) is retirement planning. I watch so many spreadsheet breakdowns and very rarely see a line item for retirement investment. I realize some people may have a large nest egg (401K converted ro IRA or something) that’s earning their retirement in the background. I’m obsessive about having enough to live on, so.. I always wonder.

Thank you, Amanda! This is my favorite video of yours that I've watched over the last couple of years. From one Frugal Goddess to another... You Rock!. I am living my best life on my small pension and saving money every month. Financial freedom on a pension income and it's guaranteed until I leave this earth. Living in this amazing country and the province of BC, I also get a subsidy for half of my small apartment rent, a bus pass for $45 a year, and other wonderful benefits. I could work but staying under the income limit to keep these benefits, I prefer volunteering to help others. Frugal is the way to go.

I spent 14 yrs fulltime boondocking on the road and it will always be my best memories now !!....... I found a small business that did very well in Flea-markets....craft fairs/shows....Campgrounds and even on just the side of the road alot of times........ Boondocking saves so much and once you have completely gotten a grasp on it and have a few things to really make it comfortable and self sustaining you will enjoy it so much !!!......I will say I did my journey in a 25' Class A so it had room to stand and move with bath , Kitchen & living area......the bed was a Drop down up front

@@mitruther3183 I actually carved signs.....sold wind chimes.....hats..T-shirts...socks......it depended on the area , I now only travel in the summer and make farmhouse furniture...beds...night stands and farm tables .....you just have to use your imagination and follow the better markets !!
I just come across your page , i've been looking into the van life due to me retiring from doing concrete work rightnow i live off a certain amount of retirement pay from a disability and being 64 yrs old so anyway ive come to this conclusion ... im single , my kids are all grown and gone and living their lives now , i have a golden retriever that has become my best friend and my rock , ive got really no bills beside rent , insurance , phone , food , and day to day things and more and more i look at the van life and really can only see one reason why i wouldn't pull the trigger on starting that type of journey .. so anyway i would do this trye of thing only if i had a partner , a woman i could share that life with , we would share the van and space and it would be so much more enjoyable with someone you enjoy their company ...... i haven't given up on finding the right woman , the right van ......

I camp host for 6 months of the year. It covers a place to stay for half the year and I don't spend much in fuel which is super expensive.
Stunning views of the mountain. Some of the ways I like to fund a new purchase is to sell some things that no longer serve me without having to create more debit. Thanks for sharing your ways that you've managed to create the lifestyle you love.
This video has been very helpful. I am planning for retirement and want to move into a van when I do so. Spending less money now or being mindful of what I am spending my money on is so important. I have spent the majority of my working years spending money without giving much thought to it. Thanks for sharing your insight and experience with us.

Very insightful video with a lot of practical advice. 10 years is a very long time for van life, but it's where you find your Zen. So you live your life according to how to sustain that Zen. We substitute our lives for job security, which is understandable but not very fulfilling. But also for companionship and a sense of community. You being able to spend most of your life in quiet solitude in beautiful surroundings is something you are able to do. I think that is very special. I love to see retired senior ladies meeting up and finally doing what's always been in their hearts to do, too. Hope you get well. Wear layers and warm wrap around scarves for your nose and mouth inside and outside your van when you're sick. BTW, I did my own calculation on how much I spend on coffee & creamer a year= $176. And that's only because I make it myself every morning😉.

The less I have over time, the less I want, the less stress I have, the more content with life I become. We create our own realities. Letting go of traditional beliefs about money and status is so freeing.

I'am so impressed. This is the first time I've ever seen or heard of you but you hooked me when you said what you said about living a fulfilled life. You are correct on that. That is what life is about. Being grateful for this life. I have spent my whole life struggling to pay rent and being grateful for my father for teaching me love through nature and spending very little time in it. I don't know why. I'm going to watch all your video's and get inspired. Please give Frank an Aspirin every day. I hope that you might be able to buy a small piece of land. You could garden just stay put. I started out with a $400 van i paid $365 for and sent the other $35. Later! Thats how poor I was! Traded up and up again until i got my G-20. $5500. For $5000.
