- Does Golf GRIP SIZE Matter? Grip Size tested with swing weight made the same!
Golfers are fit for their golf grip size on the PGA Tour. It may not seem like a big deal, but golf grip size can have a huge effect on performance, particularly how your hands deliver the club at impact.
In this video, Master Fitter Freddie Meikle demonstrates the effect of golf grip size by testing different sizes out. He also adapts each set up to have the exact same swing weight as this has not been done in other golf grip size testing.

Good information that golfers should be aware of! Like it.
Absolutely!
Well done! A very good grip video. Love the attention to swing balance and final explanation keeping it simple.
Thank you indeed ...Just hadn't seen any grip videos including swingweight :)
😅
Good video! I tried the same Jumbo max to standard grips on course and your findings are exactly the as mine. I also ended up with Golfpride standard +4 but with two extra layers of tape.
Very nice! How are you finding them compared to the Jumbo Max?
Funnily enough use +4 with 2 layers by default (on a .600" butt)... I just like the way the 2nd layer of tape doesn't quite overlap before putting the grip on ...also helps me know if a shaft is slightly thicker or thinner than the norm and needs more or less tape
@@FredzGolf The Jumbomax medium size did not last, covering came loose and got frustrated with shots going right more often. I swingweight my clubs even the new ones and have found the honey spot for me between D2- D2.5 with my irons, love lead powder but next time I'll buy tungsten powder.
another excellent video. Crammed with facts and logical conclusions. Great video again, Freddie...
Thank You for saying so :) I'll keep em coming!
You rock !! Great info as usual. What glove size do you wear typically? Thx !!
ML typically ...oddly I wear a glove for 5/6 holes ...then get in the zone and forget to put it on for the rest of the round ...I get a bit superstitious over whether it's on or not 🤣🤣
@FredzGolf that is fair, never played without one. I was just curious about hand size and grip size. So you fit into a reg grip or maybe + 2 wrap typically? I'm just trying to figure out how it impacted your ball flight with different grips from your reg size grip that you typically use.👊👍
I’ve had plus4 grips on my clubs for about 4 years, Mizuno built them with the grips in mind
I wanna try the cpx jumbo, I like doing the grips myself but the change in the swing weight is worrying me
I wouldn't worry too much, get them done by a fitter if you're really unsure or do them yourself and get them adjusted later if you're not convinced :)
The heads will feel lighter but after using them for an hour or so, you won't notice ....maybe you would if you flicked back and forth like I did in the vid
99% of pro shops would just do what you'd do yourself and not do anything about the swingweight
@@FredzGolf thanks for the reply
In between my comment and your reply I ended up ordering the midsize because I was freaking out
The one comment I get about my mp20s is how balanced they are
Golf isn’t a great sport if you’re an overthinker 🤣
@saulgoodeguitars amen to that 🤣 ...you'll enjoy the midsize in any case ....little bigger than the mcc plus4 so you'll see that bigger grip benefit still
@@FredzGolf ended up getting a refund on the jumbos so I’m happy
Just gotta get used to the cpx because I’ve been using the tour velvet plus4
Thanks again for the reply and your video
It made me think about it, which I didn’t really apart from oh I want to try jumbos 🤣
@saulgoodeguitars ah goodo... glad I could help 😁
Hey buddy, great video. I’m new to golf and on a trip away in Turkey last year I was ill advised to to actually take an inch off my golf clubs from standard size. My swing weight is now all off and is it possible to get them extended and back to the factory D3 weight with midsized grips as standard are way to thin for my and found myself over gripping. Thanks
Hiya, ah nightmare ...yes they can be brought back to their former glory ...where abouts in the world are you based?
@@FredzGolf thank the lord haha! I’m in West London
@Thatkidhari ah awesome ...I'm based in Milton Keynes so not too far away ....as long as I've got the grips in stock, I can get through them in an hour and a half to be safe if you wanted to venture up drop me a message on 07548147626
Hey just curious unless I missed it, what did the swing weight result end up being on the jumbomax? I couldn’t see it on the video. And if you remember, what would the fix be if the swing weight ended up being lighter with the jumbomax? Awesome video about grips and swing weights
All the swingweights were the same, I think I may have used a bit of lead tape inside the top of the shaft for the jumbomax
...lead tape on the head, lead powder in the shaft and cork plug or a lighter grip can bring the swingweight back up
I'd say don't worry about swingweight straight away if you're thinking a grip change will ruin the clubs or anything ...99.9% of grip changers like pro shops and retailers don't do anything with swingweight
If all the swingweights are the same in the set of irons, you'll largely be ok :)
@@FredzGolf oh awesome ! Appreciate the knowledge on that !
Thanks for the tutorial! I love your videos. How many swing weight points will lose with a 64 gram grip vs a 52 gram grip? I play with Golf Pride tour velvets in standard size (51.5 grams) and switched to a Golf Pride CP2 wrap midsize (64 grams) due to arthritis and other old age problems. I'm hoping this does not screw up the swing weights too much. Do you think this will make a huge difference? I can live with 1 or two swing weight points in loss i guess but anything over than that I think I am screwed.
Just measured those exact grips... Comes out 3 swingweight points lighter going in to the CP2 Wrap Midsize - I think you'd be far from screwed in this scenario though, ultimately theyd feel lighter but once you use them a few time you wont notice the change ...With an arthritic element influencing the need to change it's going in a healthy direction ...if the swingweight was getting heavier, I'd worry more
I think go ahead with the grip change, you'll be absolutely fine :)
@@FredzGolf The comfort factor I think outweighed the concern for swing weight. Keep ‘em videos coming sir! I’m a big fan.
@@FredzGolfLighter swing weights will impact ball flight and distance, right?
People bring up swing weight like they’ve even checked theirs lol
Hahaha so true ...I run with D5 because I made a full set all D5 about 15 years ago and won a few events ...but realistically it doesn't matter if I use something different, I still make the same decisions and shoot the same scores :)
I backweighted and sw all my clubs, and use Jumbomax Zen Light grips.
@@vicgeier3482 I’m thinking consistent swing weight matters more than just swing weight. My point was ppl buy taylormade irons and look up specs thinking mass produced clubs are what they say they are
@@vicgeier3482 Nice!! ...I'm debating a bigger grip on an easier to move shaft than I have been using on the Driver ...I've been struggling with the big dog and may Jumbo Max it up
Did you target a swingweight in the backweighting or go by feel?
I check for me and the inconsistencies of stock clubs, I have PXG irons
What’s the difference between adding wraps to standard compared to midsize grip?
I'd say the consistency of it - extra layers can bring a standard grip up in size, 4 layers is what I normally do to bring up to near midsize.
Sometimes the layers can crease which is hard to notice to be fair once the grip is on.
If the same person does it, it'll be quite consistent. If another person does it slightly differently, with a different type of tape, that's when it can vary a tad - but it's not a bad way to go if you want to reuse a standard grip with plenty of life in it
If you're buying grips, you may as well go straight to midsize :)
Change the lie angle? Why would you do a test when the club lie is off! WTF
Chill, just a demo club 😎 it was off the same with each grip ...got the results I was after
He used the same club so results would show the same. He may be hitting more left with the upright club for him. But it still would show the difference in ball flight with grip change. Why did you watch the video if so upset about his lie angle. Move on and keep the wtf comments to yourself. Maybe say hey would it have been better to have clubs bent 2 degrees flat. WTF!!! 😂😂😂
Geesh id not want loose lead powder in my shafts
@@shawnsponds Just for the test 👍 can't fish out a Cork plug each time 😅
Just use some lead tape
