Great video. My father in law went to jumbo grips and graphite shafts in his 80s to help with arthritis. It prolonged his enjoyment of golf until he was 93. 😊
That’s fantastic!
That’s awesome what a guy
I have a friend who is 81 uses midsize grips and hits the ball over 250 on average😃
I never thought about it but I better video his swing before his health deteriorates
Really glad i watched this video I'm in my sixties and have arthritis in my hands and would never have thought of putting thicker grips on my clubs to help me grip the club easier thanks
Glad this helped you
Another very informative production, thanks Simon. Moved to Graphite shafts after shoulder surgery and now have gone to Jumbo size grips with arthurites setting in to my fingers. Took some practice time to adapt (swing change) but the results are positive. You are Bang on with Mo Norman THE best ball striker of all time, if not for his autism and the resulting way he was treated by other "professionals" history of what we acknowledge as the best players of there time would very much be rewritten.
Thank you and great you have a solution to keep enjoying playing!!
This level of clarity is needed by golf coaches and pros- I use midsize plus 4 and am moving to a more modern swing using greater body rotation and ground forces but my pro is still trying to get the club 100% in my fingers and is incredible uncomfortable leading to a very strong left hand- your video really resonates with my experience where the club sits more naturally in the fingers but also across the lower pads a touch. Really good video.
Thank you Mark and glad you liked it!
new coach tiime dude
Fingers are not the strong part of the grip.
How would you hold a baseball bat or cricket bat? Not in the fingers
Thank you for bringing a reasoned perspective to this. As someone who plays JumboMax extra smalls and has found them super useful, I find it so tedious that a lot of the mainstream golf world looks down on them without, seemingly, any attempt to understand why they would be useful.
For me, as someone who has a draw pattern, my grip can get strong very quickly and duck hooks are in play. The JM grips help me get it weaker but still feel in control. Now, when I go back to even midsized, the grip feels hard to hold so I'm definitely a convert.
Absolute pleasure and thank you for watching!
I like that you make it conditional. A lot of people are all or nothing. I am 6 ft, long fingers and struggle with golfers elbow from gripping small grips too tight. The jumbo non taped has helped a lot. I have dropped my hop from 18 to 12. I also stopped the hand movement because it made me inconsistent. Moving to Bryson technique helped significantly even though I don’t get his speed and rotation.
Curious, did you have to get a different golf bag to accommodate the larger grips?
Theories are great but that is what they are - theory but not practice. You have to do what works in practice for you
Best channel on RUclips 🙌 always so informative . Swing weight imparticular I only know how important it is because of your channel ..Can’t wait to get a fitting with yourself one day
Thank you Craig, really appreciate it!
I went to oversize grips for a couple reasons. Tendinitis in my thumbs and my other fingers and the fact is they’re lighter weight and I need that to balance my swing weight of my half inch short clubs. WINN DRI-TAC LITE & LT are my go too grips. They’re very cushiony specially the LT.
I had gone to graphite red TENSEI Mitsubishi iron shafts but early last year the seven iron shaft snapped down by the hassle about 1/3 of the way up so I decided to go to STEEL Red AMT true temper Iron shafts. after a fitting regular flex was the better option, dispersion and consistency was much better than stiff flex. My 2021 T100S irons never felt better
Love your work sir! Straight to the point and articulate.
Thank you, greatly appreciated
I went to medium grips, and after install, went out to the golf course and pushed everything off to the right. These new grips changed my grip geometry and not in a good way. I use the over-lap grip, and had to strengthen my grip to compensate for everything going off to the right. However, that didn't get the job done. I ended up changing to the inter-lock grip and then went back to a neutral grip, and that appears to be working. Keep in mind, it's been over 6 months since I changed my grip and I'm still working at it. Just beware that changing your grip size to medium, large or jumbo, could cause you to push things right, and hence you will need to compensate.
This shows you should always be done with advise from a professional as it can give wrong and is not for everyone. You may well have done this and if so it is unfortunate but if you use your hands to square the face (as I do) rather than body rotation then generally it is not the right move
I like it, but as shallow as it may be, even with my traditional jumbo grips and oversized putting grip, getting them in and out of my bag gets annoying. Maybe someone can give suggestions for a bag....even a silent style bag that makes it easier. My over standard length clubs create additional problems, too.
Check out the Big Max Hybrid 3 and 4 stand bag.14
That is a genuine issue - there’s a gap in the market there!
Interesting that you mention that it's ok to play a bigger grip through your palm if you have a strong body rotation. I think golf instructors everywhere just had their world turned upside down
Bryson proves the case with that one!
Good video, one consideration is that when going to a midsize or oversize rubber grip you can add 15-25 grams of weight depending on the model. This will drastically change the swing weight and feel of the club. You could use jumbo max grips which are composite so they weigh the same as a rubber standard size grip. I tried going larger but did not like how I lost some club face awareness because the club was swinging faster despite the static weight increasing.
Only some Jumbo max keep weight low - their grips go up to 125g+ so be careful which model you get.
Excellent info. Thanks!
Thanks Tony
Great video Simon - definitly need a fitting - tried midsize and feels strange BUT!
Look forward to seeing you soon!
Tour Fit grip shown on the Video description - Neil Dunlop will be pleased.
He certainly will!
I recently bought a 3 wood that came with a larger grip on it. It wasn’t a jumbo just a mid size but I noticed that the swing weight down at the head was completely non-existent. I put a standard size grip on in its place and it completely transformed the club with its proper swing again., no way would I mess mess with grip sizes anymore because of that
There are done midsize and oversize grips that do not affect balance so you can go bigger and keep swingweight as is. The larger diameter can affect feel as being less in the fingers you can lose a bit of sensation but the weight is often the biggest cause of loss of performance when changing grip size
How much would Arccos and shot scope tags in the grip affect swing weight?
Great videos as always!
Arccos can add 3/8” or even 1/2” to club length so it can be a tricky equation to work out as it will vary grip type to grip type. On a recent build MCC Plus4 Arccos added over 2 points so it is important you do proper testing before installation
I've been slowly experimenting with my grips. I'm 4 wraps on mid size +4 and I'm more accurate than ever. I'm 6 wraps now with driver.
It is just a case of finding what works for you but that is not always that easy!
The result of this video to me is that the fitting process should start with determining the grip which should then be used during the fitting session. And perhaps after checking the swing weight one should also add arccos, garmin... whatever sensor. It definitely did not happen in my fitting (if that can be called a fitting). It was the last thing in the process (plus 4 grip with 3 layers of tape). Are you going to change the process? Or have you?
This is something that is making us look at grip much earlier in the fitting, getting a base size analysis at the start, establish the correct shaft with a neutral weighted grip and then see if grip preference negatively affects the way the club swings and therefore making grip selection resultant on that. Some sensors do strongly affect this if not taken into account. The fitting process is always evolving to some extent!
Very informative, I just purchased a set of PXG gen 6 irons from a friend, and they are pretty awesome but have standard grips. My miss at a righty is a left pull on occasion. Maybe I'm getting too handsy and should consider mid size grips of the same weight?
Possibly, however there are a few things they could cause this from a weighting point of view so check this out too if you can
This begs the question, would you take a regular grip and add wraps to get a bigger size or just fit a bigger grip. Which effects swing weight the least? Also where does swing weight come in the fitting process? What determines swing weight in the fitting and what is typical if there is such a thing as typical swing weight for a man. as you get older should swing weight get less?
To get a standard grip to Midsize size takes roughly 6 or 7 layers of tape so from an ease and consistency point of view the larger size makes it easier to replicate but you can build up by 3 or ; layers to hit a halfway house if that feels more comfortable. 4 layers lowers swingweight by just over a point (of standard double sided grip tape) so adds 5g/6g or so but based on a standard grip being 48g - 55g and Midsize grips being mainly 60g+ (there are a few at 56g/57g but there are others like Crossline Midsize or MCC Plus4 Midsize at 66g) it depends what grip you are going for as to which has the least effect.
Most players are quite affected by adding 10g of dead weight to the club so the heavier grips are usually problematic.
Swingweight is just what works for the player and there are huge variables across the player range and not directly linked to swingspeed. I fitted someone the other day at 70mph 6i speed who needed a D3 swingweight and another at 92mph 6i speed who needed D0!
I went to Jumbos on all of my clubs...I never considered the grip weight's impact on balance. That being said, I love the feel of the Jumbos and my game has never been sharper. Currently at a 9 hcp and if I could putt better I'm sure I would be at 4 or 5. The info here is very technical, I'm not that technical...so I just went for it.
If it is working for you that is the most important thing! Thanks for watching
A great video.
Do you think that the bigger grip would be a good option if you have a tendency to strangle the club grip at address?
Also in a fitting at PG can someone try a bigger grip.
It should help that, yes. We use air to pit different grips on the test clubs in fittings.
I've gone from undersize to midsize to jumbo. I use size small glove and my miss is left. Since getting jumbo in my wedges it's literally sorted it out. CPX Jumbo is a God send.
Great you found something that works for you!
One problem i have is my pinky finger is short and have a hard time hanging on firmly. So i have to use grips that are small at the butt end so my pinky can go around.
This is where the Plus4 grips can work well
Nice 👍🏻
Thank you
Does tape affect weight enough to be concerned? I.e standard grips with 2 extra layers of tape? Thanks.
It will have an effect, every layer of tape reduces swingweight by roughly 0.3 of a point. Once you get up to 3 of 4 layers of tape it will reduce swingweight by a point
There is a 'medium' grip between Standard and Jumbo, you should have included for comparision
With the Jumbo Max style grips out there now we wanted to give the extremes but the Midsize grips can be a good compromise
hit the ball square, longer distance
use club with less loft.
Absolutely agree with hit the ball square but just saying use lower loft is not always correct so be careful of that!
Should u factor in ur nails, ring if u do wear, n sweat weight that's included in ur hand when u hold the club.....
@@anonymous1aoLang don’t forget watch aswell. Essentially that’s backweighting! 😄
Correction...It was thought that Mo Norman was autistic , however, after investigation by mental health professionals, it was concluded that he was an
(Acquired Savant ) as a result of a sled accident with an automobile when he was 10 years old. Brain injury...
Ah, thank you for that.
I used to play standard and went to mid size. Is the theory true that going up a grip size helps control a left miss?
Nothing is absolute, as it depends on how you swing the club and how the head moves, but if you're a handsy player, then yes, moving up to a midsize will take the rotation out of your hands, which can stop that left miss. This gentleman alludes to it. His shots also show it. But if you're an inside out player, that left miss is likely a hook, so if you go too big in your grip, your ball doesn't draw anymore and it becomes a dead push or block. If you happen to have the cash, try to find a 7 iron in your playing specs (same loft, lie, and length) and mess with different grips. It's a fun little experiment, and could possibly improve your strikes and ball flight.
Not always - as with everything it will work for some and not for others. If you get a heavy grip it counter weights the club and can make it easier to flip the face left!
There are plenty of putter grips that vary considerably in size. Do you need to be equally careful with these?
Absolutely - huge variations in Putter grip weight too
I'd love to play midsize or jumbo. My hands aren't the biggest and I play standard grips. I've tried midsize, but I cut every shot because it slows down my release
So for you this shows a standard size grip is better but perhaps build them up by 2 or 3 layers as a middle ground
@Precision_Golf I've tried that and that definitely does help. All my irons and wedges are mcc plus 4 to help with that. Hands could benefit as midsize and jumbo don't make them sore. Getting older sucks lol
I have trouble getting a grip small enough on a normal sized shaft. All undersized are made for .580. For me the idea of oversized grips is beyond consideration. If I had to use a larger grip due to hand problems it would mean a major change in swing.
If is very player specific so a case of finding what works for you and sticking with it
Hi Simon, I was wondering if I use one of those heavy weight grips would it behave like a counter weight insert at the butt end. I am thinking thicker grip ease the vibration on the strike (less pain on my right arm) and shift the weight to the butt end from the tip of the shaft. Do you think this may work for my injured right arm?
Quite possibly. The heavier grip acts exactly as a counter weight which further most players can lose the feel for the head so be careful how heavy you go!
@@Precision_Golf 'in this case how easy to test it out to see what is the max weight without losing feel of the head?
This golf fitting business is getting a little bit ridiculous. Right now I have fittings scheduled for my golf socks, shoe cleats, tees, and ball markers. I can't see fitting in a grip session at this point. 😂
Haha. You still have the golf shirt fitting to get too!
@@Precision_Golf Yes, shirt fitting is crucial too. You can't swing freely if your shirt doesn't allow a full back swing. LOL!
I went from standard to mid-size and lost distance. So I switched back to standard.
It is most important that you find what works for you, sadly sometimes that involves finding out what does not work first!
I'm using oversized on all my clubs, better grip, more control atleast for me
Awesome to hear
”This is why”, what? The best players doesnt use jumbo grips wtf 😂
So, why do the best players use oversized grips?
Some of them do and done play very traditional size on both men’s and ladies tours (we work with an LET player who uses the Jumbo max albeit in one of their less extreme sizes). Ultimately whatever grip size helps stabilise delivery is best - the more body rotation you use to square the face the more relevant the larger grips are but if you use hand rotation to square the face then the more traditional size tends to be better
Tiger Woods. M/L glove. One wrap on a standard size grip. All anyone needs to know.
Tiger liked smaller grips but Bryson uses huge grips. It is a case of using what works and feels right for you
