Entirely true, one man was able to capture so many moods. It's hard to believe regard 10 is from the same set as the 1st regard. I was just commenting on Messiaen's harmony in general, he brings out colours that other composers don't how to make.
This is a natural result of his favouring major and minor triads while using, for his scales, modes of limited transposition. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modes_of_limited_transposition#Messiaen's_list The mode he used most was his mode 2. In many pieces he coupled that with F# major (as a couple of people have noted in comments here). Not just the 1st regard but in works as early as Le banquet céleste and as late as the Turangalila symphony.

It's still very influenced by Debussy, after all, Messiaen was obsessed with his music (always carrying around a copy of Pelleas et Melisande in his youth). I Think it's fair to say that he's the true "heir" to Debussy when it comes to the idea of harmony and musical "colour"
I rarely like vocal works or Messiaen’s works. Trying to be more welcoming to him and other contemporary composers lately. This was a stellar find, my god.
1:44 the piano in measure 22 (a bar of 2/4) looks a little weird. I counted 5 eighth note values instead of 4. Is it just an approximation ? Or is it a misprint? A flag missing somewhere?
Thank you for posting these "Trois mélodies". I just had one question: in "Le sourire" bar 8, on the return of the "theme" on the parte of piano, we hear an E natural when it should be flat... Is the error coming from the publisher or the musician? Thank you in advance for your reply !

@@verslaflamme666 it's common practice in French lyric diction to use rolled R versus the uvular R largely because of the impact the uvular trill can have on singing technique (impacting positioning of the tongue and soft palate, for example). Régine Crespin actually despised the use of the uvular R in sung French, and Lord knows she knew a thing or two about the language ;) - even with this tradition, many teachers and singers in France today are now advocating for the use of the uvular R in sung French.

0:01 Pourquoi?
2:13 Le sourire
3:53 La fiancée perdue
thank you so much for this
Messiaen's vocal writing is incredible
Incredible chord choices, no composer has a comparable harmonic language. Same goes for the 1st of the 20 regards.

actually there are some debussy reminiscences (specially the first one, with those chords at 1:24).
pero aguante el messi obvio

I love the 1st regard, but you see, i dont think its just him, its also the magic of his symmetrical modes, that does the job
0:24 This part is just one thing... its extraordinarily beautiful
Pour quoi....someone dislike this trois melodies?. I can't understand it. Beautiful, simple, yet wonderful harmonies.
I can hear Ravel's influence! specially in harmonic choices, Lovely
I hear more of Debussy's influence
I hear both
And it preochoes poulenc :))
This was over 50 years before his Saint Francois. He was only 21 or 22. Both of these facts amaze me, each in their own way.
That's something special 🎹
Unbelievable bird voices with Messian accompanied
Reminds me of Ravel's Scheherazade, beautiful
Absolutely gorgeous 😌
thank you !

Looks right to me: 1/8 rest + 1/64 rest + 15/64 notes + 1/8 rest = 1/2 in the middle staff and 1/8 rest +1/32 rest +7/32 notes + 1/8 rest = 1/2 in the upper staff
ahhh, in the middle staff I overlooked the 8th rest beneath the dotted quarter. thanks for taking the time, to discuss the time.
Messiaen is the goat

The E natural seems correct to me. The major sixth chord with sharp 11 is a very common chord in Messiaen's music.
really pretty chords towards the end of the first piece, reminded me of Vincent Persichetti,,,,, would like to hear a violin replace the voice
Tyler Torro Yes. A separate version. Let’s still keep vocal
Reminds me to Lili Boulanger's style
Could it also be good with a baritone voice?
No, it's no longer art when sung with a baritone voice..
@@toothlesstoe and what about a tenor voice?
of course, any voice can sing this music if they do it well.
@@toothlesstoe ouch .
Might even sound better, since the piano would be doubling at the octave rather than in unison
Y the third. Note ,you can identify composer
4:55
0:05 that was pretty unexpected
I mean, it is Messiaen.
Eso es lo que todos nos preguntamos: "purcuá??? PURCUÁ????!!!"
This is blowing me away! These chord changes sounds like Herbie Hancock or Jacob Collier. Messiaen is where it started!
