    The one you're talking about is the Yak-141, an improved design rooting from the Yak-38. The Yak-38 was a terrible plane, it was underpowered and was a nightmare to maintain. The Yak-141 was able to go supersonic and it had a rear engine that could swivel down. I think Lockheed Martin or something bought some Yak-141s to test the concept out and it _eventually, kind_ led to the F-35.

    • @scernefhaal
      @scernefhaal 3 года назад +9

      @alfa99121 3 года назад +5

      Yak-38 was substantially improved with Yak-38M which upgraded the engine, a main failure of Yak-38. And it wasnt THAT bad. Afterall its main purpose was Air defence, not fighting ships, so it didnt need that much payload compared to US carrier aircraft.

    • @kurumi394

When the Yak-38s couldn't be deployed because of maintenance issues the pilots actually celebrated and their superiors just watched them do it because it was that bad. It was objectively a bad plane. Granted the Yak-38M is an improvement but it's not that big of an improvement.

    No, it was not the yak 38 design that was sold to lockheed martin. Tldr at the end. In 1991, yakovlev started looking for partners to fund it as the USSR stated they could no longer do that. Lockheed eventually funded yakovlev, and at the time yak was working on the successor to the yak 38, called the yak41 or yak141, which lockheed used to assist with the development of the x-35 for the U.S, which is the name of the f35 prototype. So, tldr, it was the later yak 141 that lockheed got, not yak38.

    Re: Lockheed and the Yak VTOLs.
    Lockheed didi some research with the Yak 141 'Freehand', the production fighter that was supposed to replace the Yak 38. They did get notes for the 141's tilting main engine exhaust and you can argue that their problems with exhaust ingestion on the 141 inspired the forward lift fan on the F 35, but they didn't get anything from the Yak 38.
    Largely because the Yak 38 was more of a tech demonstrator than a fighter. Going from what I see in the vid, it looks like the War Thunder Team took some liberties with the Yak 38 to make it competitive.

    1:43 To answer your question, as i was just thinking about how someone would definitely take this up and you did so five seconds after i thought about it, no, Yakovlev did not sell the design of this aircraft to Lockheed. What they did do was sell/share their research and flight data of the Yak-141 to Lockheed as to make the initial fazes of development safer and easier for the X-35 program. The design, and in this case, the VTOL system on the Yak-38/141 is fundamentally different from the VTOL system used in the X/F-35.

    The cooperation with Lockheed only came about in '91 and the Yak-38 had little to do with that, except being the predecessor of the experimental Yak-141. That one had a different configuration and a rear thrust vectoring nozzle that went on to become and integral design concept employed in the F-22 (and later the F-35).

    I was looking through the some random tanks and came across the AMX-13 (ss.11). I didn’t think it was anything special until I realized that it has 4 ATGM’s at 6.7 that can pen 600mm. Other than that it seems like a pretty normal 6.7, but thought you might want to check it out and maybe yeet some rocket powered baguettes.

    1:56 they didnt sell the Yak-38s design to Lockheed, the sold a different one, the prototype Yak-141 to them, as it didn't get completed due to the fall of the Soviet Union, the Yak-141 was a whole lot more advanced, and more resembled a mig-25, and had a single engine in the back that rotated downwards like the F-35b.

    No, the Yak-38 has absolutely no relation to the F-35 project.
    What Yakovlev sold to Lockheed was the technology of the rotating nozzle of the Yak-141, which was further developed for use on the F-35B variant of the Lightning II

    Hey Phly,, not sure if you know this but because you have VTOL (or a plane with a drag chute) you can land your craft at Heli Pad 2 (the small airbase) and repair it in the same way as the main airfield! I use this alot with my Harrier since Pad 2 is always way closer to the objective. Love your content and thank you for re-invigorating my love for War Thunder!

    I would like to quote Phly from his Vietnam War custom gamemode video back on the last day of 2018. I think now that we have the Harrier and other jets and vehicles there should be an Operation Lionheart gamemode. Operation Lionheart was a US, West German, UK and as far as I know French, training excerise in preparation for the possibility of war. I think it would be an interesting gamemode and could probably be best on the Fulda Gap map.
