  • Exanima is sort of a mix between Dark Souls and Getting Over It, and the result is very unique. This video is a spin-off of my Steam Dumpster Diving series so that I can discuss/play games I already have experience with as well as games that I have more to say about.

      IMO he should have just fought it, the thing with running away in this game is that it takes away any chances you might have of actually blocking and meaningfully dodging the enemy's attacks. That thing's legs were twice as big as his lower body, he wasn't gonna outrun it. That hole was a miracle all things considered.

      @@gyarurespecter3386 You can't fight the beast without a lot of experience in combat in this game and still, it can just smush you. Running away is the best chance you have, if you fight, it has higher chances of just smashing your head and killing you instantly.

      Yep it is. Especially when you are watching someone playing. But when you play it yourself it feels a bit better and as soon as you get used to controls you start to appreciate this unique game.

      The funny thing is that Exanima is really just a tech demo for their real game, Sui Generis. So when Exanima is finished in 30 years, next is the actual game in maybe 50.

      @@rthebthrthyvretyvryw6008 I'd argue that 'a bit' is an understatement. Higher level armors like maille hauberks or just about anything that's metal are practically invincible to slash-based red damage. Add that with some good underarmor padding, and you're practically invincible to (semi) permanent health loss.
      Ofc, in story mode, you still get red damage from getting knocked out, but it's better than, say, getting ganked in the unarmored part of your body with a sword.

    I loved when he literally just put logs on top of the enemy chasing him lmfao. I want to see this game fully fleshed out for sure! If they could make it a little less clunky so you're not getting physically stuck in stupid situations I can see this game being pretty great.

      It's a lot better nowadays. They improved performance and lighting system too. I don't think the main campaign got increased, but the arena got a full revamp. I wish they could get some more devs to speed stuff up.

      It's actually really cool the enemies in exanima sometimes dont attack on sight until they know youre not one of them. In the bone zone you can get away with walking through a decent portion of the area meeting no resistance if you are covered in armor

    This entire game is, literally, a tech demo for the full RPG the dev is making with this system. "Sui Generis"
    Exanima is an offshoot story and functionally a testing ground for it.

      Thank you for this. I am so wildly excited for Sui Generis now. Exanima is awesome and it's only version .8! Imagine when ranged, npcs, magic all get fleshed out, and it's in an open world RPG style outside instead of some scary cramped dungeon. Ahhhhhh awesome!

      @@Bollibompa What the hell are you talking about? It's done very well on Steam with only word-of-mouth advertising, the devs share update progress every Monday morning, and even have a Discord where they hang out with players and have a channel just for reporting bugs.

    I remember that Divine Divinity hid stuff behind props in similar way. It's so surprising after seeing probably a billion barrels in games that are either just static or maybe breakable, when suddenly I realized "yeah I'll just drag these over here" and then there was a hidden basement hatch underneath.

    I friggin love this game, like everyone jokes about how silly you look while you first start fighting (which to be fair is hilariously true) but man when you get that rhythm it becomes some of the most satisfying combat in video gaming. Especially helps that the physics give everything the weight it needs to make every hit look and feel painful. Couple that with a dark and lonely atmosphere, a lived in, labyrinthine (if admittedly confusing) area to explore, and some interesting lore tidbits here and there and you've got yourself a special game. Though it does suck the game has been and is in such a long developmental phase, I don't blame anyone getting frustrated by the lack of updates as well. Hell when I saw the recent update I thought it was an April Fool's joke because it came out on April 1st. I still think the game (and it's future game Sui Generis (which is basically this but friggin open world) has the potential to be, frankly speaking, one of the best rpg's ever made... Though it's gonna be a long while before we ever see it.

      On the back end the amount of work that needs to go into making new content is monumental. I'm not surprised it's taking them this long, they are basically on the cutting edge in regards to physics engines and models. I wouldn't be shocked if this studio gets contracted into VR games at some point to help make the VR physics actually work

      @@StayCalm0 well it's a very small dev team so of course progress is gonna be slow, but that doesn't mean it'll never get done. You say they'd need big studio money to realize their ambition, but i think that as long as there are people who want to play the game the devs will keep working on it, so it will eventually get finished, even if it takes a long time. And they released a pretty major update just earlier this month so i think they're definitely still invested in it for the foreseeable future.

    I like how the game is so realistic in how environmental interactions work but the characters stumble around like they were born yesterday

      Much of it is a matter of player control. You can learn to fight incredibly smooth, if you get good and level your character. The game has an entire arena mode dedicated to that.
      However in the beginning your character is unskilled and a new player will make them stuble. Early "enemies" do so as well given that they´re basically zombies, but later opponents are much more capable.
      I put "enemies" in quotation marks because most of the early undead you meet are not actually hostile if you dont bother them. They have a fairly complex AI that reacts to what you do, how you treat them nd others, what memories they have of you, if they think they can take you in a fight and so on.

      @slapypenguins101 Well, part of that is learning how to plan for that in the environment. For example, when he is getting chased by the Brass Skeleton around the chairs, what I learned is that you can very quickly grab those chairs and flick them out of your way. OR, if you are looking to buy more time, you can flick them into the path of the oncoming enemy causing THEM to stumble or get caught up. There are some times when it does feel a little janky, yeah, but the game really plays smooth once you get a strong handle on the movement and all the tools you have in your kit.

      It's a game where you have to relearn your basic ideas that you normally have in a video game, like moving around. Movement is awkward but ultimately controllable. You have to be careful about it on a keyboard and never just hold down W. It has a high skill ceiling that most people won't expect. Moving and striking at the same time is absolutely crucial in most cases because damage is entirely based off of your weapon velocity. It's also important to know not to stand in bad positions, such as on uneven terrain, kind of like in real life (but exaggerated a bit). Moving in specific ways when you are about to be struck can be the difference between taking virtually no damage and being knocked to the ground. Also, if someone hits you in the knee cap, expect to go down.

    regarding the lever story: I too love games like this and the only game so far that made me feel like I was playing a DnD game was Divinity Original Sin 2. I rolled with the Red Prince (or whatever the name of that Lizard was) and thus had several encounters with assassins that tried to murder him. One encounter had 4 rogues that would de-cloak, attack, recloak and then move, so you basically never knew where they were at and the only viable option was using AoE attacks to break their cloak.
    At one point I thought abut how I would make someone with invisiblity visibile again and casted rain.... and low and behold all cloaks broke in an instant and it was a pretty easy fight from thereon

      That game definitely has that feeling. You're more limited by your creativity than the game.
      I once couldn't beat a boss, so before the fight I got a whole bunch of heavy metal boxes with high hp from all over the map and created a wall between the adds and the boss so I could fight them individually. The adds even responded to this with instead of making their turns, they just shouted, which they normally never talk in the fights.

      When I have finally beaten the mage boss from the cave (Mordus I think it wad the name), I teleported him with 1 character using the gloves of teleportation, then teleported him again using another character to pretty much an ambush of mine, in the middle of all characters, away from his mobs. Killed him quickly and the rest of the mobs were easy to go through.
      I know what you're saying, that game is realy detailed.

    Honestly, this is one of my favorite games.. and the melee combat in it feels really good and fluid... but it takes a lot of practice to get good at it. Once you do get good at it, it feels like you have more control than in other melee combat games. It's amazing. You can accurately clack someone in the head with the perfect spot of the very tip of a greatsword swing and do A LOT OF DAMAGE. It's really just amazing.
    Also, this game has the most impressive character physics and physics in general that I've ever seen in a game.. and the lightning engine is amazing.

    I think I watched this vid when you released it, but only started playing Exanima a few days ago by chance. And it's freaking amazing! Although not comparable to Dark Souls, it is a completely different gameplay on all aspects. When it comes to combat specifically, I find Exanima's organic and realistic battling much more engaging than the now stale dodge-roll frenzy through boss attacks/arena-wide AoE that revolves solely around pattern recognition and reflexes.

    just so everyone knows, the movement isn't awkward and clunky once you get used to it. It's not a fault with the game, it's part of the learning curve. once you "get it" you'll be sidestepping to dodge blows and landing attacks with extra force by stepping into them and overswinging just the right amount. it's super satisfying once you git gud because you really feel like you learned new skills

      Go check out some videos by some of the people that put serious time in. How retarded the combat looks is entirely dependent on your abilities and people have been getting to pretty godlike levels. I'm pretty much a scrub, but I've seen people do complex grapples and throws using shields, stabs between armor plates, etc. The distance of your cursor from the enemy and its position also varies the height of your strikes.
      It's still ridiculous for me, but it's more organized chaos now.

      hellraiser5671 Well I came prepared to that zone with my duel wielding undead boi and my small sword that can destroy them...
      However... I found the night vision helmet and could now use the sword with a shield but then for some reason everytime I opened my inv or any other inv (like my minions) it would lag me tf out and it wouldn’t let me exit the game... it just said I was unable to because of cursor something
      I thought leaving the floor would help so I tried even harder to find the exit of that hellhole
      I found the exit, went through, g a m e c r a s h e d
      *I was reset to a random point in the sewers and it took away my night vision helmet but everything else stayed the same*
      Before I found the exit I took some red damage and when it rolled me back red damage was one of the things that stayed
      This game is rigged

    Tip: in your keybinding options, there is a key labeled "Interact (combat)"
    This lets you move stuff while in a combat stance, so you can get your enemy stuck in chairs while somewhat able to defend yourself.
    Hold the key bound to interact (combat) and then use lmb to move stuff.

      Right now, all enemies have night vision (Even derrin). But imagine what you could do if the AI couldn't pathfind it's way around chairs in dark places, and not notice players hiding in darkness, and have trouble hitting and parrying if the fight is brought to a dark place. Of course, the player also get's these disadvantages unless they use the Night-vision helmet.
      Skeletons are one exception, as they don't seem to use sight to see things- If you use Mind mask thaumaturgy, they don't seem to notice your character unless right in front of them within punching distance.

      Exanima is basically the engine for Sui Generis; they're developing the ground work for SG in Exanima, where it can be play tested and polished for implementation in SG, whilst also giving fans a product as a sort of proof of concept. I love Exanima, and I hope we get a bunch of cool stuff in SG, like archery, multiplayer and unique weapons, like the flail.

    This game is just fantastic. Once you start to master the combat system there's nothing more rewarding. I spent like 50 hours just playing the arena mode. The campaign could be better tho but it well deserves the price.

      It's actually one of the coolest games I've ever seen, indie or otherwise. The game mechanics, design, and engine are just... all incredibly innovative.
