It's incredible how the same devs can make a game that feels like a relic of 2009 and another one that is a timeless influential masterwork, one week apart.
I imagine the teams working on the games were comprised of different members of From. Honestly it would be a major bummer to know you worked on a forgotten game like Ninja Blade at the same time your buddies down the hall were working on what would become the first in a long line of classics.
@@fraundakelmbrilpondaprost90 not really, that other team would then be pulled into the next souls project and reallocate to a different team setup. Not like they fire good developers for being on a project that didn't pan out. Those people probably just worked on the other souls games.

I ended up quitting and coming back to it multiple times with various difficulties, and ended up selling because I couldn't take it anymore.
I read that they workshoped ever aspect with Microsoft to make feel like a Hollywood action movie. Fromsoft probably released it the same time as Demon's Souls as a safety net, as they projected that to sell about 75k units. The execs probably were breathing a sigh of relief that they had this conventional sure fire hit releasing with their weird king's field spiritual successor that one obsessive dev in their company wouldn't shut up about, to make up for that game's likely upcoming lack of sales and popularity. @David Assébof No sir, three out of just over a million games. Narrow it down to console/pc games, 3d games, action games, etc and that pool is much smaller. Most definitely not millions. We're probably talking in roughly the range of 50,000 games at the most. And honestly, how many action games have you played in your life? maybe a few hundred at most if you're really big on it? Because for me looking at dark souls, zeldas, marios, metroids, DMCs, skyrim, spongebob, nier, and tons of other stuff I cant think of off the top of my head maybe 3 of 160 for me personally? so roughly 2%? That not a small number anymore.

Ninja Gaide is just such a big milestone. Most developers are prone to fail by default trying to copy it's core mechanics. I'd just whished it's sequels would have been as true to the original as possible. Instead they wanted to make everything bigger, shinier and therefore it became shittier.
I liked this game when I was a kid, I even 100% it, getting that "moonlight sword" with no context in a room that looked way out of place in the game was very puzzling back then, now that I found this channel I finally know where it came from, my teen self must be happy.
I enjoyed the game too weirdly enough to beat it and the QTEs didn't bother me at all. not sure how Ill like it now though. I died alot too ahh the beginnings of dying over and over again.
For anyone who's interested, I recommend watching Matt McMuscles' "Demon's Souls - What Happened?", which explains a lot of what was going on in FromSoft when Demon's Souls and Ninja Blade were being developed, and how it's basically a miracle that Demon's Souls even exists.
@@B-RY27 Tenchu from software sucked Tenchu was a activision game and Tenchu 1,2 and 3 were amazing everything made after 3 were by from software and they all sucked armored core nice tho
One bug I got when playing this on PC was this weird visual effect where fire effects would always obscure objects in front of them like they're burned into your retina, even if they were miles away in the background. So there'd just be this orange glowing orb onscreen in front of enemies, walls and even the player because the skyscraper in the background was on fire!
Yeah, I mean 10+ main title games for Armored Core clearly shows it never caught on, right? Though honestly it'd be cool as shit to see Armored Core get a little love in this style.
I had DMC vibes from that moonlight greatsword cutscene, but in a very awkward way. You know how every time Dante in DMC acquires a new weapon, there's a cutscene where he demonstrates what it can do in a very stylish way? Well, he generally does that in two types of cutscenes. The first type is when he slays a bunch of enemies that come out of nowhere displaying what the weapon can actually do, while being Dante (careless, cool and hellishly stylish). The second type is when he does some wacky cool moves that represent the FEEL and MOOD of the weapon (I'm looking at you, Dr. Faust, Nevan, and Gilgamesh), rather than actual moves. Well, this was neither. I swear to god, if the moonlight greatsword cutscene had enemies in it, it would be actually pretty good! And without them it just feels wacky and awkward... He stylishly cuts a bunch of... Roots? Don't get me wrong, Dante in DMC 4 often does the same thing with the big black obelisks, but when he does it, he doesn't even pretend to be serious, he does all kinds of "WOHOO"s and wears a grin during all of it, so you can tell he's just having a BLAST. This cutscene is just trying to be too serious while in actuality being way too wacky for itself, which makes it awkward.
Exactly. The moonlight greatsword cutscene has that same energy as whenever Dante gets a new weapon in Devil May Cry. But with Ninja Blade's general tone, plus the fact that he shows off the sword's power by....cutting some tree roots, it just feels super off this game.

on THAT one? it‘s been like that ever since! i really have no idea why anyone would choose an xbox over a playstation. there are no exclusive gems whatsoever.
2:45 best example of this would be the Yakuza series, metal gear rising revengeance and to a lesser extent the god of war series, all of them use quick time events absolutely perfectly and the gameplay is elevated because of it.
I'd like to throw Asura's Wrath into this as well. Sure, it also has a lot of QTE's but they feel pretty good to pull off most of the time. Just makes you feel like you're part of the action sometimes.
I like how at 0:18 you showed intense highlights from bloodborne and sekiro, but for dark souls you just showed the player standing in front of firelink shrine. Which is exactly what I think of when I think of dark souls for some reason.
I remember seeing my dad play this a few times but I never got to know the name of the game. Thanks Pineapple. Now one of my mysteries has been solved. I didn't know it was a fromsoftware game.
12:10 Fun Fact. The area where you get the Moonlight Sword in Ninja Blade is a nearly identical to the one where you get it in King's Field IV: The Ancient City on PS2. The only difference being in King's Field 4 the area is more ruined and light is shining through. I guess by this From Software is basically telling us that King's Field is truly dead and will never return. :'(
I think its probably one of is first video game back at the day when first played a videogame every game felt amazing and when I remember the game in my head it feels like it was the best game ever made. But in reality the game sucks ass even if I got amazing child memories of it.
even whit that said game that have a special place in my childhood memories are still good game. Even as a child I could see the difference between a good and a bad game and when a revisit those games I still have a good time.
Same! I loved Ninja Gaiden for the xbox360/ps3, and this was just a fun budget version of that. Also, I didn't have any technical issues. I can imagine that would ruin the fun quite a lot.
What really blows my mind about this game is that they thought that it would be the successful game instead of Demon Souls Let me make it clear, they had more faith in the QTE SIMULATOR *NINJA BLADE* than *DEMON SOULS*
Because back then who wouldn't? It's the same formula as God of War, with a bit of Ninja Gaiden. On hindsight it should be almost foolproof. Nobody wanted to bang their head with over 40 tries trying to complete 1st and 2nd bosses. They probably think: "At best it'll turned into a franchise, at worst it'll be passable but still make money". Unbeknownst to them, it's a lot worse than that
That time we already had Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Dante's Inferno and God Of War. It's not doubt they overpowered Ninja Blade, that's why only few people know it.
@@ShatteredGlass916 they at least could’ve had a little more faith in the game that did something different though. Did they never consider that maybe that formula was getting old?
@@Anonymous-73 nope, that's what i'm trying to say. In that time maybe they thought the could get away with just copying what's big. The Demon Soul concept are probably secondary to them because they probably deemed it less safe of a product compared to just copying GoW's QTE and NG's ninja setting
Consider the success of the Horizon series. I don't think there's anything fundamentally new or innovative with those games (at the time of their release), and yet they are quite successful nonetheless. Producing it turned out to be a very successful bet because all of its ideas are 'safe' and not out of the box (except for the 'robots are animals' design concept, which is pretty original)
@@IronPineapple that's arguable. For Answer is the best customizable mecha game _to date,_ and the whole IP got at least AA class following. If you compare it to the Souls series, sure. I don't think you realize how popular Armored Core has been ever since the PS1 era.

Same! I loved Ninja Gaiden for the xbox360/ps3, and this was just a fun budget version of that. Also, I didn't have any technical issues. I can imagine that would ruin the fun quite a lot.
What really blows my mind about this game is that they thought that it would be the successful game instead of Demon Souls
Let me make it clear, they had more faith in the QTE SIMULATOR *NINJA BLADE* than *DEMON SOULS*

Consider the success of the Horizon series. I don't think there's anything fundamentally new or innovative with those games (at the time of their release), and yet they are quite successful nonetheless. Producing it turned out to be a very successful bet because all of its ideas are 'safe' and not out of the box (except for the 'robots are animals' design concept, which is pretty original)

There's just something about a super serious ninja dressed up in a clown costume that makes me laugh too much.
"Fighting your dad in some kind of sword dimension."
It almost looks like Ken and Kanbe somehow found their way inside of Gilgamesh's Noble Phantasm.
Would it be more appropriate to compare it to the UBW ?
@@lamelane2762 I am the bone of my Moonlight Greatsword.
Bruh, it's UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS, not Babylon's gate.
Ooh, an inside joke that I didn’t understand. Unfortunately I don’t watch bad anime
@@Tenchigumi Salt is my body and rage is my blood
Mom can we have Ninja Gaiden?
We have ninja gaiden at home.
Ninja Gaiden at home 💀
This was one of my favourite games when I was a kid. Back then I did not really care about comparing games to think if they are good or bad, I just thought that being a ninja and running around is real cool, and that's it lmao.
ah the times when we had innocence i miss those
Be a ninja, running on walls, throw shuriken, fast pace combat. As a child in 2009, this is a game I can dream of
Otogi is my favorite "Pre-Souls" FromSoftware game. The combat in that game is so good, and the destructible environment makes it so epic. Love that game.
Agreed, Otogi killed ass.
>"But none of them really ever caught on"
*Cries in no new Armored Core games since Verdict Day fell flat*
Bruh for real armored core was my shit growing up. I never realized that from is responsible for 2 of my favorite series.
Yeah I was coming down to type this too. Armored Core has had a diehard fanbase since PS1.
And for real like, I love Souls and stuff, but come on. It's been 7 years since anything AC.
Shmandalf Armored Core 2 on my pizza hut demo disc was a formative gaming memory.
ACV and ACVD had some issues. I love a lot of what they did, but then there was a lot I felt was wrong with them.
EDIT: Granted, at this point, I'd take something in the style of ACV. I'd prefer something along the lines of the PS2 ACs, but that style had some merits to it.
Yeah. Man even bringing the later titles like 4/4A and V and VD to PC would be amazing bc of their multiplayer.
This "defensive phase -> attacking phase" boss design? Well... honestly, it's part of why I don't like Elden Ring bosses. In that game, From leaned so _hard_ into making you dodge absolute combo and AoE _barrages_ to then take an opening to quickly smack them a few times. Like - really, it's _basically_ that exact type of design. I really don't like it.
False. That secret proves this game is set in the future of demons souls.
Technically speaking, it's the area in kings field 4 where you get the moonlight sword, it's a great place... and he broke it so I hate this game even more now
The game actually implies that it's a prequel to Metal Wolf Chaos.
Umbaasa
Actually looks like Ash Lake.
Do you wanna play a game that's almost entirely made out of Quick Time Events but is still a great experience? Try Asura's Wrath.
What a good game
I kept my 3 for this.
Asura's Wrath is the best anime I've ever "played".
@@mj1mj3 Technically it's still counts as "played", more in the sense of you're playing interactive video throughout the game's episodes/arcs than to circulate your controller more actively as the supposedly action game
Ever heard of The Wolf Among Us? One of my favourite stories in a video game.
6:33 - Moonlight Butterfly. Hmm... don't know about that chief.
Ty
Well if you have a bow, or bombs... you can always attack it
thats why that boss is trash
@@kiro253 Killer soundtrack though 😏
Literally my exact thought when he mentioned bosses switching between attack phases and defense phases
*let me tell you that as an artist, it's GREAT to put out something that is an overtly juxtaposed mess! it is the prelude to a MASTERPIECE*
"Never really caught on"
*stares in Armored Core*
Seriously. As an old school AC fan, it truly sucks that both FromSoft and the fans of FromSoft have forgotten and abandoned us.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe 100%. Some of my favorite games were Armored Core and Tenchu, both of which are 100% MIA because Souls exists. I like the Souls series well enough, but for my money they don't compare to AC or Tenchu.
I would love for AC to comeback
Me: Why does this game feel like a Bayonetta pre-cursor?
*handstand spin with swords on feet*
Me: Ah, that's why.
Don't forget the motorbike up a building.
This was From Soft?! I remember 100%ing this game back in the day holy shit.
Oh my god this game is a lost memory archive. I got it as a kid thinking it was going to be like ninja gaiden because I loved those games, I know this game had its flaws. I little brain didn’t mind fighting recycled bosses at the time and I thought the kill animations were cool. Definitely not the worse game I ever played.
