Hellpoint has actually gotten a lot better. It's less stiff, the platforming is actually doable (it doesn't look like it, but you CAN make that jump), and the atmosphere is pretty interesting. My brother liked it a lot. Just don't play it on local co-op. The game really can't handle it. Borderline unplayable.
Me, playing Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition when it was new, first time ever playing anything with a controller as someone who keyboard and moused everything before, or used a joystick (primarily for flying and driving, but also for platforming back in the Amiga days): - died because I sucked at using the Dualshock, falling off a cliff - died because I botched a jump - died because GfWL just sucks and did weird things like hijacking my control authority while I just was moving around and suddenly couldn't stop anymore, walking myself off into the eternal depths - died because I botched a jump again - died because I still haven't quite figured how to Dualshock, again, falling a long way while trying to circle a zombie... - died because I botched yet another jump - died in the Capra Demon boss fight because somehow the camera was stuck in a fricken corner, or maybe it just was me again still not understanding the concept of a controller, but that was just a vague assumption. Anywho, my cam was stuck and I couldn't free it, but I finally died the first time in that game to an actual enemy!
I remember seeing that game mentioned in a few places and the moment it was mentioned I didn't remember what it was but I remembered it was never spoken fondly of. Then the gameplay was shown and I remembered what those words were.
'Twas a strange, janky, yet peculiarly endearing game once you got into it, as I recall. A certain amount of control scheme frustration, to be sure, but once you figure out where the mouse input translation falls on a scale of "relative" to "absolute" (I think it was kind of a bit of each, which added to the jank feel)... you could semi-reliably hit enemies, even specific parts of them! Which was way cool for a game out of that time period. =)
"what is this animation for the stairs?" He made the stairs' collision box actual stairs instead of a slope, which causes the jerky up and down movement
There is no problem doing that, but then you would need to make your player model react to the stairs by making the feet stand on each step. Lot of AAA games does that.
@@jean-1009 Kind of- Even if the feet react to the stairs with IK, the player model would still do the janky movement since that's only a visual effect. You would do both, really.
@@jean-1009 And it still looks clunky, look at FFVII remake stairs, they look good but still kind of clunky cause its REALLY hard to not have the legs fucking around. Its either, the body moves but only a part of the leg does or the whole body moves but the feet don't connect correctly with the steps.
I think there is a path-finding algorithm for realistic leg animations while interacting with stairs in order for feet to be placed correctly onto the steps while the body maintains a smooth motion.
Holy shit. Getting snagged by that rope and you still being in control and the enemies ganging up on you was rad. 1998. Games today still just do the bear trap thing where you grab your leg and take HP damage.
It's... Well, it's like you saw in the video. The idea was nice, but execution left much to be desired. Even as a kid back then, when you have a bit more patience to try the latest game you bought (got this from some bargain bin way back when) and are generally quicker in picking up weird controls, this was just too damn clunky. Eventually I just played by using the numpad 4 and 6 buttons, to make the sword swipe left and right, because the mouse didn't really work that well. If it had better controls, this might have been real fun, especially since the environments were fun
20:30 for those interested how the stair thing happens: It's the collider of the stairs. Usually, you want to have a plane that goes up at an incline and not use the actual stair model for the collider. If you do that, this exact thing happens.
@@oscarfredwynjones7758 Agreed. I actually thoroughly enjoyed Hellpoint, even got the platinum trophy. I would definitely recommend. I think Iron Pineapple was way too hard on this one.
@@oscarfredwynjones7758 Totally agreed. I got it for free by GOG and you know.. It's free so lets give it a try. I ended up loving it. I wasn't rly into dark souls at that time but after beating this game I went to the shop and got all dark souls right away haha. Really good game, it gets harder and you can make it even more harder with some items in game (you can lv up or down enemies) and those moon/spaceship cycles give it some more mechanics and paths. Certain areas are only available during certain times. There're a lot of builds and enemies are greatly affected by elements so you might end up with couple weps for certain areas/enemies instead of run 2h sword whole game. (but you can beat most of the game with a fcking laser glove haha)
unless your animation skills are good enough that characters actualy take steps on each step of the stairs and it looks like they actualy take the stairs. some games do that. not all tho
that's just an not ramp tagged stair, i am focus testing the game that sort of stuff is not just on the first map, and it's very few stairs which has it. i already reported some times but looks like not everything i say gets to the devs themselves (i do fucking walls of text tho i can see why). the combat is kinda impactless and feedbackless besides the sound? yeah i can agree but the game is more of an bloodborne clone than darksouls. the game WANTS you to be offensive because THATS HOW YOU REFILL YOUR ESTUS FLASK. and the "something unique" on this game is the local co-op split screen besides the story which is kinda hellish to say the least it's like event horizon but far better. if you don't believe what i said on the first line just go to my channel i uploaded some videos of the bugs i had found when the first public steam demo of it came out before getting selected.
20:32 that's no stairs animation, it's just that each stair has a collider, meaning you actually walk up them 1 by 1, bobbing you up and down, instead of a smooth ascend, which happens when the stairs have a collider in the shape of a slope.
I know about ProtonJon, and a quote like “Are you attached to your legs?” is probably not a very positive review from him. The man attracts broken games like a magnet.
I was trying to figure out wtf "Tennessee Boyd" was supposed to translate into. Was it actually trying to say like "Energy Void"??? Either way, I am genuinely surprised with how decent Little Witch Nobeta was. The UI is great, attacks and dodges look like they feel good, there's interesting mechanics such as losing the ability to heal if you're hit while healing. Terrible localization aside, that actually looked fun and interesting.
It does look nice. To get excited about it, though, I'll need to see the rest of the game develop around it first. It's unfortunate the dev doesn't have a lot of income, according to the store page. But I can't go buying it on a faint hope that it'll be great. I'll keep it in a tab and check on it now and then to see if it becomes something.
The shooting is great and really weighty. But the other thing that it really needs to work on is the environment, it looks weird how much work was put into the character but the environment is so bland.
Maybe the dev is from TN or something. Randy Boyd is the president of UT(University of Tennessee) and tried becoming governor recently. Didn't win, though. Then again, I could be stretchin it.
"How it makes you feel, and I know that sounds dumb..." Honestly, the biggest thing to me about Dark Souls IS how it makes me feel. The isolation, the forlorn landscape, the dreariness... It isn't the combat, the scattershot lore, or the insane bosses and enemies. It's the mood, the world, the passive storytelling around you.
The “feeling of Dark Souls” is why one and three are two of my all time favorite games. The loneliness and dreary feeling add to the sense of accomplishment when you succeed in those games.
The exploration is what does it for me. Everytime you reach a new area or level which usually has such a specific and unique look to it always makes me stop and just absorb the new environment for a moment. Going through an area for the first time is the best feeling in the game for me: fighting off new enemy types, finding all the (hidden) items, opening up shortcuts, adding more pieces of lore to the gigantic lore puzzle that DS is, it's all fantastic. In contrast to many others, I usually enjoy the areas a lot more than the bosses cause I really play these types of games purely for the exploration and not for the combat. Also the reason why I really hate having to do NG+ runs for trophies because it takes away this element of surprise and exploration.
@@SaltyStrudel Yep I second that. Hyper light drifter conveys a sense of atmosphere very similar to dark Souls. Fantastic game on its own right IMO. Also, you might wanna check out metroid prime. I know, it's not really the same genre, but the atmosphere in that game gives kinda the same vibe
9:18 Are we just, you know, ignoring all the other actual quotes on this cover? "Are you attached to your legs? Like, emotionally?" "Help, I'm on fire!" "Come and jump on my boat" These are the best, cover worthy quotes about this game. Dear God.

rand0m508 Absolutely, if you like games like it. It’s a Souls-like with an interesting gimmick, some really hard fights, and literally nothing but a bunch of bosses. Like if Souls and Shadow of the Colossus had a AA love child
I'm here in late 2021 and as others have said, Hellpoint ended up being far, far better than what it was here. They have some interesting mechanics that set it apart from other souls likes, platforming is fixed and functional, world/lore is great. it's still a bit strange or rough in spots as it isn't a AAA or anything but nothing like the jank we saw here. Has Very Positive recent reviews and Mostly Positive overall on steam right now so it would seem many people agree.
I actually fell in love with it. It's a mess sometimes, but man, it's a mess I had a load of fun exploring. It also captures one aspect of Dark Souls very well: if you know what you're doing, it's very easy to make a hilariously broken build that trivializes the game.
You need to revisit Little Witch Nobeta. They've fixed up a lot of the translation and extended it by a major amount. My only real criticism is the lack of diverse enemy types, but the game is still very fun
@@Dark0neone tbh one of the things that sold me originally was the awful script in the demo so while I'm sad it's gone I'm happy I can now take the interesting lore seriously
From Below's Steam reviews: "Shadow of the Molasses is a game where you spend the first 20 minutes staring at a boat. Clouds pass overhead, a light rain begins to fall, and somewhere off in the distance you can hear the developer pleasuring himself while muttering "Yeaaaaah. Are you enjoying my ART? Then you arrive at a beach. You climb up a wall, then walk down some stairs, stab some red floating diamonds, climb up another wall, then - and this is the tricky part - you walk down some stairs. During this journey you will eat several food items off the floor and drink from many a puddle. But then, you put a thing in a thing and take an elevator up higher. This is subversive, you see, as the game is called BELOW and not ABOVE. You'll quickly realize that navigating the environments is a lot more tedious than navigating to the Steam refund page. When you get there, you're gonna want to select "It's not fun" as the reason and type "Firmly entrenched up it's own ♥♥♥" in the notes section."
I was so hyped back when it was presented at E3, then I bought it a year ago, played 30 min then get refunded because I didn't like it at all. No information in the game, no character preset or stats it seems, well it kinda sucks.

I still don't get why they even let us weapon-block with literally anything that isn't a greatsword or ultra greatsword if it's just gonna throw all our stamina away and have us sit through a painfully long block-stagger for, like... 40% phys reduction. Especially since guardbreaking gives a free riposte. DS1 blocking was hella spicy in comparison. 2-handed weapon blocks I can understand since it at least doesn't just insta-guardbreak you from a single R1, but who would ever want to block with an offhand straight sword?

I remember playing " die by the sword" with keyboard and a Joystick back in the day. It might just be nostalgia, but in My memory, controling the sword with the joystick, worked well and felt kinda cool
A lot of it got to do with progress of technology rather than plain nostalgia. Movement mechanics that we take for granted today could very well have been state of the art 10-15 years ago. For it's time, it was most likely a really interesting concept that turned some necks but today that level of technology just doesn't hold up to what we got now. Making it more difficult to look back and experience it, as well as enjoy it.

@@chillhour6155 Prey was actually pretty mediocre. It was great for maybe the first 15 minutes when they put some the mechanics like portals and gravity manipulation to good use but it's clear they exhausted all their ideas after that and they basically just resorted to using them for padding (for example walking on a gravity path on a wall to reach a switch to disable a forcefield and then backtracking on that gravity path. Wow, great puzzle. Great setpiece. 10/10. Oh and then there was the portal maze towards the end which was just god awful and annoying) they never do anything creative with them again after the first couple of levels. On top of that the game was boring since there were absolutely no consequences for dying (enemies stayed dead and aside from having to do a bit of walking you didn't lose any progress at all) and most of the enemy designs were blatantly stolen from other games. Also the weapons, despite their exotic appearances, were incredibly generic. The alien rifle was basically just your average scoped assault rifle, the not-a-cyberdemon arm was just a stronger assault rifle with a grenade launcher instead of a scope, and the acid gun was literally just your average shotgun (shit, they couldn't even be bothered to give it some cool acid effect like making enemies desolve. You just shoot enemies and they fall over just as they would if you shot them with a standard shotgun). You could easily swap their models with a scoped M16, an AK-47 with a GL, and a pump action shotgun of your choice and nothing would be out of place. The closest thing it had to a creative weapon was the leech gun and that was just limited to how you got ammo for it. When it came to actually using it, ice ammo was basically just a generic short range flamethrower (granted it froze enemies instead of setting them on fire), plasma was just... a typical plasma gun akin to Doom, lightning was just a Q2/Q3 style rail gun, and the sunbeam was just a laser. Also the spirit walk thing was pretty much pointless and might as well not have even existed since they never did anything interesting with it mechanically. The most you ever needed it for was to spirit walk through a forcefield to flip a switch to disable it. They were so lazy and uncreative there were times when the switch was almost directly on the other side of the forcefield. Honestly, I'm pretty sure anyone who insists the original Prey was good is just thinking about the first couple of levels. If they actually went back and played the full game, they'd see that it's not as great as they think it is.
Honestly reminds me of when devs on Steam attribute their game as being like 10 different games which just says to me that they are injecting mechanics or facades of mechanics without any actual understanding of what made them good.

Yeah, I feel a lot of what IP said about Hellpoint is fair but he must have really not spent much time with it. It definitely has things unique to it. Like weapon use unlocking new moves for one, or the time mechanic... or that every time you die nearly everything but the physical layout of the map can change... weapon buffs that do more than just damage... He gave it a really shallow overview. That sucks but I guess that is what happens when you blast through games like this.
@@Zeybrin He probably gave it a shit review because he thought the game was boring, as he said. Yeah and they released the alpha as finished and proceeded to disband the studio the same day in order to reform as a new studio with the same people under Bethesda.
It's especially ugly since what made Rune work so well in the first place was its simplicity. Not to mention the aesthetic feels so far from the original game. Rune looks so dark and ancient, and 2 carries none of that over.

@@jean-1009 Inverted kinematics
I was beyond impressed by that. New devs need to take inspiration! What a genius idea, and to execute it that well is remarkable.
I was amazed by that too
Maybe if we got games based on executing inventive ideas instead of better graphics the game industry would be way more interesting
@@inigo137 yep
20:30 for those interested how the stair thing happens: It's the collider of the stairs. Usually, you want to have a plane that goes up at an incline and not use the actual stair model for the collider. If you do that, this exact thing happens.

I think it's just a name. It's probably some kind of archmage turned into a cat or something similar and the boss recognised his power
@@benispoob It's clearly a subtitled Japanese game with horrible translations
"How it makes you feel, and I know that sounds dumb..." Honestly, the biggest thing to me about Dark Souls IS how it makes me feel. The isolation, the forlorn landscape, the dreariness... It isn't the combat, the scattershot lore, or the insane bosses and enemies. It's the mood, the world, the passive storytelling around you.
The “feeling of Dark Souls” is why one and three are two of my all time favorite games. The loneliness and dreary feeling add to the sense of accomplishment when you succeed in those games.
1 and 3 had the best environmental design and layout while 2 had some of the best characters. Benhart the dwarf is so cool(is that his name?)
Specifically for the feeling, id recommend trying hyper light drifter. It hits a lot of those notes for me
The exploration is what does it for me.

"Shadow of the Molasses is a game where you spend the first 20 minutes staring at a boat.
It's interesting to see where Hellpoint was back when this video was made. Now that the game is released, I think it's worth revisiting. Not that you would need to make a video; but it is much more enjoyable now than it was at the time of recording.
THAT TIMER FOR THE SPONSOR ANNOUNCEMENT!

6:56 okay but can we just appreciate the sheer confidence of our protagonist as he inquires “Is that all you got!?” Whilst he is getting his arse thoroughly handed to him?
I remember playing " die by the sword" with keyboard and a Joystick back in the day. It might just be nostalgia, but in My memory, controling the sword with the joystick, worked well and felt kinda cool
A lot of it got to do with progress of technology rather than plain nostalgia. Movement mechanics that we take for granted today could very well have been state of the art 10-15 years ago. For it's time, it was most likely a really interesting concept that turned some necks but today that level of technology just doesn't hold up to what we got now. Making it more difficult to look back and experience it, as well as enjoy it.

Came across your channel, and seeing Die By The Sword again was just spectacular. I grew up on that game and would watch my dad play it every time he would come home from work. I really appreciate you trying it out, Die By The Sword will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm glad you confirmed with Vaati first. God forbid you have any opinion on a Soulsborne game without consulting the experts.
ProtonJon is an old-school Something Awful Let's Player. But, also, his quote isn't even explicitly saying if the game is good.
Thor is a mythical being.
This got me laughed so hard lmao

Nah, Aqua is much better.
They need to add party-tricks and healing magic
@@n124ajdx silence, heretic
@@n124ajdx But Aqua is useless, she's only remotely decent at dealing with undead, and even then, she's a beacon to undead, meaning you'll just attract more undead. Then there's what she does to anything that's not pure water, stay away from soda Aqua. Though her useless nature aside, you know that Fate series has a reference to her, in FGO, Babylonia arc, Ishtar, who at one point is forced to sit down with a stone tablet that says "Worst Goddess". If it wasn't for the large amount sad moments that followed in the arc, I'd have said that was the funniest arc. But yeah, just leave Aqua with her party tricks, can't even win a game of rock paper scissors (though suppose it doesn't help her that Kazuma's luck stat is op, and she stands no chance, even with all the blessings she casts, haha.
Glorious, a Megumin reference, and now rewatching that bit I won't be able to think of anything else.
Rune II may seem satirical at first but you've got to remember that it was made by Human Heads who literally have not made a single good game since the first Rune and have a spectacular talent for taking neat concepts and just flat out ruining them.
Prey was great
Never played Prey ?, the good one
If they actually went back and played the full game, they'd see that it's not as great as they think it is.
why is no one talking about how he classified Crash Bandicoot as Souls like
You’re saying that it isn’t?
That’s a reference to an old journalist review.
“Skyrim meets Breath of the Wild, but with multi-player”
Okay... how is that even partially accurate
Botw reminds me of Oblivion, but combined with a climbing simulator.
Honestly reminds me of when devs on Steam attribute their game as being like 10 different games which just says to me that they are injecting mechanics or facades of mechanics without any actual understanding of what made them good.
That game looks like a bootleg conan exiles ngl.
Next we have "Male Bulge, yeah?"
...Let's check it out.
i love how ProtonJon is just thrown onto that Rune 2 cover - he's like one of the OG let's play channels on RUclips, mainly known for his Kaizo Mario series.
but to be fair i only know he exists cuz he was in the series beard bros made about kaizo mario.
I'll say, The Thespian feast has amazing artstyle. Just gotta work on the bugs and clunks
I hardly think that playing it more would change that just because the layout changes or weapons give other kind of buffs.
But also, if you like it its fine even if he doesnt. Opinions arent right or wrong.
Nah it’s such an overused art style l, it’s lazy at this point, it doesn’t look good.
@@myfellowsonicfans7131 nah, these enemy designs look fresh af and environment aint that bad either
itll probably never be a good game tho cuz the animation and game feel are waaaaay too mediocre, it would need a total overhaul
Play DarkMaus. It's a top-down souls-like with mice and actually has good reviews on steam.
He already played it in the previous video I think
good reviews on Steam? this means absolutely nothing....
@@ericschuster2680 most games have mixed to negative review on Steam though
@@shira_yone Pretty sure that the most common score for all games on Steam is actually "Mostly Positive". There was even a meta-analysis on this very subject a while back.
If you are looking exclusively at the bargain-bin games, though, then yes, the majority being mixed to negative may well be the case.
@@azurebookllet9216 exactly. It means Steam reviews does have some merits, especially when looking for these kinds of games.
"Solaire what is your favorite anime genre?" Solaire:ORA!
Thanks for introducing me to Nobeta. Bought it immediately and loving every second!
I just have to say that this currently is one of my favorite gaming-related video series.
Can't help but be fascinated with the wild and weird ideas that people have built around or inspired by the Souls formula.
Thank you for the great work!
You should check out Drakan: Order of the Flame, very old game where you can ride a dragon. I think it was amazing at that time and surprised that literally no one heard about it.
I just replied about the sequel (I only played part 2 on PS2), but he needs to try both of the games. They were absolutely ahead of their time and with modernized gameplay would be absolutely amazing games nowadays.
Oh shit, I played the first hour of that game SO MUCH as a kid!
That was either really good, or I'm remembering it with massive rose tinted glasses.
It was well known back in the day but unlike other games it never came back as a cult classic like say the Thief franchise did.
@@lordofchaosinc.261 didnt the reboot game suck ass or something?
@@rinnnnnnnnnnrinRinOnishi I played through worse games but it's not good for a Thief game.
Especially the characters like Gareth and writing were disappointing and bad audio: all voices were not positioned so that say guard voices all originated on your position and that's a problem for a stealth game.
As a random game it's decent.
Srsly we need a remake of "Die by the Sword" oO this looks fun as hell
Die by the Sword could actually have been an interesting kinect or wii game tbh, now? Maybe Switcb joycons
Kinda disapointed he didn´t point out (maybe doesnt know) that there is an animation tool beside the game where you can prerecord complex moves and then bind them to a game ingame to use instead of the mouse controll.
We should definitely get little witch nobeta revisited since it’s been out for a few years now
"Actually Too Much Purple: The Game"
It overloads into yellow!
And I _like_ purple.
Highly recommend the Skrautfold series. First game is "Shrouded in Sanity".
If you're up for trying something a little different, the Vagrant is an extremely well done dragon's crown like game for $2 on sale.
Those both look very interesting.

2:05 The father of the dark soul 2 pursuer !!
He has resorted to luring lolis into his windowless office with Tennessee Boyd ice cream sandwiches. IDK if that's a real thing, but he can make it happen, he has the magicks!
Rune 2 is just... so much wasted potential. I told Human Head in alpha testing their whole premise was fucked, but they didn't wanna listen. Kept going on about their "vision". As though throwing all the Steam Store's cursed runes for asset flips onto a single game constitutes a valid creative vision.
Yeah and they released the alpha as finished and proceeded to disband the studio the same day in order to reform as a new studio with the same people under Bethesda.
@@elveone Yep. Incredible really. It took a while, but Bethesda got Human Head in the end, one way or another.
It's especially ugly since what made Rune work so well in the first place was its simplicity. Not to mention the aesthetic feels so far from the original game. Rune looks so dark and ancient, and 2 carries none of that over.
Can I just say I love the OSRS music? I grind on my ironman while I watch your videos and it just makes me smile.
A bit late to the party, but I have to note: Die by The Sword controlls A LOT better with num. pad for swinging instead of the mouse.
Those explosions at 1:25 caught me so off guard, I burst out laughing.
Rune 2 is the closest thing to AC: Valhalla gameplay that we'll get.
Oh my fucking god, stop it. Stop it right now, young man/woman/child/kid/thing/it/then/they/he/she/whatever
Closest? Nah, the closest is AC odyssey, they all the same

Elderborn is like a first person dark souls. It's literally how they describe their combat. "Skill-based, souls-like melee combat in first person perspective, complete with 11 varied weapons to master". It also has a free demo so you don't have to spend money to try it.
Except it actually sucks because it opens up and loses all sense of progression once you get to the city
Ive been wanting to check that game out. Heard great things usually.
5:05 "You found a bread stick" has to be one of the most hilarious item drops I've ever seen in a game. Where would that bread stick be found? Up the goblin/kobold's butt? Did you find it in one piece, or is it in crumbles after your sword dance? So many questions, like finding a roast chicken in a trash can or hidden behind a dungeon wall.
Yes! Die by the sword! Classic! I remember when it came out... insane difficult and hilarious. The hero gets his leg cut off in an arena; “bloody hell!” Like it’s a slight annoyance, then hops everywhere 😂😂😂
