The four of them together at the TINY Bottom Line in NYC's Greenwich Village? I was living in NYC in 1989- I wish I had seen that show. I saw Nanci Griffith there around 1987 or 1988 and it was great.
I went to the Bottom Line just once (I hate the drive into the City from New England) to see the Richard Thompson band ---- they were fantastic (and quite loud in that small space). Marti Jones opened, and pointed out some of the well-known singer-songwriters who were in the audience (Marshall Crenshaw was there, and Chris Smither too if I remember correctly). Jone's "Used Guitars" is a great record, by the way. As for this song-circle lineup here, I saw them too, at a small college somewhere. My wife and I are huge Hiatt fans, and fans of Lyle's as well.
Saw these 4 at a guitar pull in Calgary, Alberta Canada. What a great show. To top it off Guy invited Canadian singer/song writer Ian Tyson to the stage where Tyson sang a beautiful song about the wind What a special night. These 4 have many Canadian fans who appreciate their songs. I really miss Guy. Bruce Jackson
Had the good fortune to see this grouping at the Telluride Bluegrass Fest back then. Seen each individually too except for Guy. Always exceptional shows.

I saw them perform in Cleveland quite a few years ago. It was the best. Greatest songwriters ever. Guy Clark was and is so special. This is the type of music that really touches your soul.
Now those guys are four to draw to as we say in Texas. Had the privilege of seeing them at Bass Hall Ft. Worth about (10) years ago & the stories they told, the songs they sang were an awesome night of songwriter history.
Yeah, I saw them on this tour as well. When John Hiatt sang Thing Called Love, Lyle Lovett joined in spontaneously and threw John off just a little bit, Lyle apologized for it afterwards but he said he had been out on the road with Bonnie Raitt and was singing this song with her every night and so he just jumped right in without even thinking about it!
This was fantastic! My late son & I watched it together when first shown. What an awesome abundance of talent & entertainment. In my eyes John Hiatt is & will always be an honorary Texan. Our generation of Texans is dwindling & nothing comparable to take their place. 💔 🤠
Saw this foursome in Clearwater, FL in 2005. Completely different set list from this. Joe Ely did " If I Could Teach My Chihuahua to Sing". Great evening.
Saw them at the Bottom Line in NYC in the early 90s. Except for John Hiatt, I only had a passing awareness of the other four. Lyle still had the tall hair and when he started singing, his voice filled the room and sounded as if he was in harmony. John lended tasty leads on everyone’s songs which was appreciated by all.
Lyle Lovett has the best voice, he should of lead the vocals. That being said, what a stellar performance from every one of these incredible song writers!
Great group. We got to see John Hiatt in a small club in Berwyn, Illinois a few years ago. He was just solo with about six or seven guitars. He really sang his heart out.
I saw this show twice, once in Clearwater, Fl and once in Indianapolis. Both were different from each other and from this one. It's wonderful. I miss Guy Clark.
I miss him, too; however, I am a folk DJ, and I can play him on air, and maybe bring him to the attention of people who hadn't seen or heard of him while he lived.
i recorded this to DVD 12-ish yrs ago & like to listen at least once a a yr or so. it never gets old. so much talent i don't know how the room didn't explode or something. Was happy to see it's now on RUclips. Thank you so much for sharing/posting.
Sarah, was that at the Iron Horse, or Pearl Street? I took my wife to see Hiatt at Pearl St. on our 4th date ---- it was the Perfectly Good Guitar tour ---- and she's been a huge fan ever since. We've seen him solo, doing duets with a bassist, in this songwriter circle here, and with a full band, but he's great no matter what. At one Hiatt show, several years before I met my wife, the unannounced opening act turned out to be Sheryl Crow with a band, just before her record hit it big.
Guy Clark bigger than life. What a treat to watch this. Sorry I never got to see Guy, Rodney Crowell talking about him at concert Sunday. Have seen Joe Ely (love that boy) a few times, the last a very small venue, The Forum, in San Luis Obispo 20 years ago? ;In 2011 got to see John Hiatt, (only reason I went), and Lyle Lovett at Chumash Casino Santa Ynez Calif, two rows back (house only about 1/2 full, so usher put us close instead of where our seats were), just the two of them sitting on chairs, exchanging songs and stories like two old friends sitting on the front porch, Liked Lyle during that. Usually not a fan, (except for If I Had a Boat.) I guess they often tour together. Doing so now.
Saw this foursome play at a free performance at The Bottom Line in New York City, part of a weekend of guitar-oriented performances around the city. The Bottom Line closed in 2004, and I saw the show while a student at New York University, so it must have been around 1992-94 (John Hiatt definitely had more on his head at that show). Could have been a precursor to the tours that followed. It was memorable - sitting at a table five feet from the performers as they did their informal exchange of songs - not all that different from what is shown here. Thanks to whoever posted it.
Lots of good old entertainment there in a neat bundle. Thankfully, through technology, these great moments shall survive forever. Fads and trends may come and go. But the real McCoy is there for us all to enjoy to the year dot!
Wow. Glad I found this. I saw these guys do this show at the Bass Performance Hall in Ft Worth maybe '99-2000. One of my favorite nights of music ever. Had no idea they did an Austin City Limits episode. I knew I liked all of their music, but remember being amazed at my degree of entertainment by John Hiatt's story telling. Such classics.

“I’m going down this old dusty road.. and I ain’t going to be treated this way“ ..xo
Thank you for taking the time to post this!!!
Love all 4 of these guys--hope to meet them in HEAVEN
That's some great talent on that stage!!!
Was so lucky to see this gathering of amazing singer/songwriters in East Lansing Michigan - a night I’ll never forget.
so damn down to earth, both thumbs are up
Thank you Lyle, the question of whether the show was really outside has dogged me for many years.
I saw this on the Saturday night PBS program. So glad I could find it. Some of the best Americana music you can hear.
Patrick Hamrock k8
Great tribute to Woody Guthrie, singing all 4 verses.
First time I saw john hiatt was in a small club in Northampton MA. 30 yrs ago. I was already fan, but it was amazing.
Fantastic group of musicians- such a treasure!
Great session but my favorite is John Hiatt, no effence, but he is.
I saw Lyle and John together also early 2000's a couple times and would love to see them again, sorry I missed this show!
Saw this lineup in Chicago. What an incredible show.
Saw this show in Chicago too. Phenomenal show!
I would appriciare that very much. Thank you.
It doesn't get better than this. Perfection on one stage.
This is what I miss about not living in Texas anymore! Arizona is beautiful but I miss the great songwriters.
John Carey, Check out Heather Hardy.
Sorry to say, but you don't see much like this on Austin City Limits anymore.
My husband saw this show in Troy NY at the Troy Music Hall. Amazing.
Thanks to whoever posted it.
man, you were blessed.
Now that's talent.
John Hiatt's guitar playing!
This was a great show Good as it gets
Ain't that Something ✌️🐕🐾💪🦾💪🦾🇺🇸✌️💞💞☕☕

Joe Fabia
Lots of good old entertainment there in a neat bundle. Thankfully, through technology, these great moments shall
survive forever. Fads and trends may come and go. But the real McCoy is there for us all to enjoy to the year dot!
Des légendes ! !!.. thanks 💕
There has to be a new generation of guys like this. Just has to be.
