Once saw him in St David's Hall in Cardiff. Sadly there were only about 20 of us in the audience. He got everyone to take seats close to the stage and proceeded to give a wonderful intimate concert with requests included. Wonderful guy and have huge respect for him.
20 people? THAT IS BAD. WHAT'S WRONG WITH CARDIFF. That is Lyle Lovett. One of the best of the Nu(at the time) C&W performers. I wish I had been there! Shout out to you and Lyle... PS. I don't personally like C&W much! But when I first heard LL; well...
What I love about Lyle Lovett is the fact that when he is in public, he is always well dressed, HIGHLY mannered and never acts like he is better than anyone else. TRULY humble and appreciative. Can't be a better gentleman than that!
I’ve been a LL fan since the 1980s, and have seen him live three times over the years. And while my interest in many musicians have naturally waned over the decades, I find myself returning to his music with regularity. His songs have aged majestically well, and I find myself discovering new insights and emotions in them as I age, get married, raise kids, lose loved ones, get hurt, hurt others, and care for aging parents. He’s the gift that keeps giving.
Rarely does one encounter such a universally loved and respected entertainer as Lyle Lovett. It's virtually impossible to find anything but praises and admiration for this man, and rightly so.
After seeing Lyle Lovett recently, I’ve concluded that he plays concerts because he truly enjoys playing. Both Lyle and Luke are insanely talented people. We are lucky to have them. … and honestly listening to Mr. Lovett talk is just as enjoyable as his music.
So quite awhile ago I asked my wife what she wanted for her Bday. She said Lyle Lovett tickets. I thought "well this is going to suck" but that's what the lady wanted, he just wasn't my kind of music. To this day that was one of the best concert I have ever been to. From start to end it was totally awesome!
Timber, you have a wife with excellent taste for music. I've traveled all over the country to see Lyle and his Large Band. 10+ instruments to make up the large band, and of course you realize his wit, and hopefully danced wildly when they played "Church". I had the opportunity to see him at Carnegie Hall, with the Harlem Gospel Choir.
I had the same thing happen to me with an Eric Clapton concert in the late '80s....( won the tickets in a promotion and took my then-wife. Both of us not expecting much and, man, we're we wrong) However, as time has passed and age has refused to relent, I find Eric Clapton beginning to wane and Lyle Lovett beginning to wax in my personal listening preference
My husband took me to see Lyle play at Bass Hall in FTW TX on my birthday about 15 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the show but was a bit distracted because I kept waiting for Lyle to wish me a Happy Birthday from the stage! Because that's something my husband would have done, just not that time. 😏 I still considered myself a very fortunate wife and Lyle Lovett fan that night. I come back to this concert often to watch Lyle be Lyle. And that fiddle player....wow.
First time I met Lyle, I had no idea who he was. I bought a pedal steel guitar from his band‘s pedal steel player. The second time I met him after a concert he gave at a tent festival in Germany. It started to rain in the middle of a ballad. The rain on the tent was louder than the music. Lyle stopped in the middle of the song and cracked a joke. Then he asked his audience if it was OK to turn up the volume a little bit. That was when I realized that his music wasn‘t as loud as with most other bands at the festival - and that it was so much more enjoyable, as you could actually appreciate the nuances and the quality of the music. When I talked to him after the show, he was worried about the rain incident and the audience not getting everything they came for. Wow. What an artist and true entertainer and nice person at that.
Good story. We're were young once when loud was the thought. It's better now. And bonus, we can actually hear the others on stage and not have to rely so much on the FOH monitors to cut through the mix.
There is a great moment in the video when Lyle recognizes Luke's pure control over his craft. He does it with a subtle little smile as if to say "damn this kid can play!" during an impressive section of Luke's solo (11:00). Two musicians that embody what it means to be artists!
He doesn't mind sharing the credit, which is one reason he attracts such top-notch talent. With him, it's about the music - not about Lyle Lovett. A lovely, great-souled artist.
No words, the man is just pure. Saw him with REK a few years back in Greensburg PA in a small intimate theater. One of the best times ever. Went by myself because nobody I knew was interested in going with me. Made me realize why I now go to concerts by myself.
I'm 33. I didn't know much of his music growing up, but in my early 20's Lyle was the only artist that could serve as a bridge to country western. I resisted the whole genre, but he opened the door, and for that, I am grateful. Such a likable and talented man. Luke has mad skills too. Great concert!
I am not sure if the people of the USA realise what a beautiful distillation of music they have come to produce, but I for one am grateful that they have done so.
Everything Mr. Lovett touches turns to gold... His taste, and knack for surrounding himself with superb musicians are at the highest level- truly a impeccable performer!
I just love this type of country - just a guitar and a fiddle. A bit of that high lonesome sound always touches you like nothing else. Dang good stuff. And Lyle is such a gracious gentleman talking up and showcasing Luke like that.
He’s like that because he’s a musician. Not a star, a real musician, who understands the value of teamwork and encouraging his fellow players. It’s not difficult to spot those qualities, all of the best are exactly like that.
These Tiny Deck concerts are such a find! All the best of the best in such a kicked back venue, available 24/7. Thanks RUclips and NPR... and to all the artists!
Been a huge Lyle Lovett fan for 25+ years now. Met him several times in person, always a gracious gentleman. So happy to have stumbled across this tonight. Really enjoyed the tiny desk concert and Luke Bella and his fiddle. Lyle you only get better with age. 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
Lyle Lovett is one of the most unappreciated musicians in history I think he's an awesome song writer, guitarist and vocalist. And luke this is the first time hearing you but sounds great

He has a fan base from those early 3 records who have stuck with him. He is definitely admired by other musicians. I don't think he's hurting financially. His music gets used in films and tv. Plus, he acts some He was in the American version of the series THE BRIDGE.
@@patricecatanio901 I don't think I'd say he's underappreciated ... he can be the giant in any room he walks into if he chooses to be, which he doesn't.

They both make it sound so easy as they gently take you on that soft and lovely ride . Thanks guys for the delicious treat . Never gets old... one of my favorites has always been The Family Reserve... and of course "Creeps Like me" -- but also a beautiful cover of "Stand by Your Man" -- now, wait... I know you're thinking that's meant to be sung by a woman... but listen to the lyrics... third-person... :)
I find that Lyle's songs tend to be either kind mainstream-fare, or they're amazingly unforgettable arrangements. I guess what I'm saying is that Lyle is like lightning in a bottle. He may not strike all the time, but, when he does, he delivers one hell of a punch.
Good God, I didn’t think that I could love Lyle any more than I already did, but I was wrong. My love for him has just skyrocketed. He’s incredible, simply put. Gig ‘Em, Lyle!
The incomparable Luke Bulla playing that fiddle. The first song is from Lyle's very first album (1986). Still one of my favorites and still good music today.
We've been listening to Lyle for years now. He has such a unique style and his music is so infectious and wonderful to listen to. Most of our friends have told us, "Lyle who?"...He's such a hidden treasure, but we've seen him a couple of times in Minnesota. His concerts are absoluely amazing if you ever get to one! We've never heard any one else like him.
I live across the street from Lyle‘s in-laws. My wife Gloria and I went to his first concert at the majestic theater in downtown San Antonio. I love the concert and his interaction with the crowd. Now, I can’t get enough Lyle Lovett music!! Art
Tickled that so many in the comments are discovering Lyle for the first time. A musician friend introduced me to him over 20 years ago and he never fails to impress.
I'm only 22, but heard him here and there growing up. Definitely love his music. was so awesome seeing him life last year, he's an awesome guy, and great musician!
@@@ronmercer7853-Have you been to a Lyle Lovett concert? Lyle talks a lot and tells stories between songs and always makes a connection with his audience. I've seen him 6 times now and twice with John Hiatt. Great story telling in song and between sets. What cracks me up? Lyles dry witty sense of humor and his graciousness. It's a lost art of talking to an audience and drawing them in and making them feel like they are in their living room.
Can't believe its been nearly 3 decades but back in 1987 I would pick up Rolling Stone magazine to find out what concerts were coming to Chicago every month ( I was usually looking for U2, REM or Simple Minds)... I would see listings for Lyle Lovett & Leo Kottke on tour thinking "who are these guys they keep promoting, never heard of them before... weird"... local alternative station WXRT would play early Lovett songs and I was hooked... Lovett seemed so alternative to not only late 80s country, but late 80s ANYTHING. Lyle was a clearly masterful songwriter & artist with his big band and storytelling humorist sensibility. In 1989 friends were going to see Rickie Lee Jones but I hadn't really been a fan... when my friends asked me to join them I turned the ticket down... after weeks of asking me to join them my friend finally said "your guy Lyle Lovett is opening for Rickie"... well, that was all it took, a chance to see this brilliant new country folk jazz artist! But I then learned how beautiful and brilliant Rickie Lee Jones was and became a big fan of her as well... still seems like just the other day.
The hubs and I just attended a concert of his last night in Troutdale, Oregon . Even though it was raining all night and we got soaked, it was a great concert! Loved it!
What a pleasure to listen to, as always! I love seeing Lyle live, listening to his music in the car, at home - whenever, wherever. If you aren't already a fan, all you have to do is to listen to him! ;-) He captivates you with his story telling and his jokes but most of all with that amazing (and often times sh**-eat'in) grin he ALWAYS seems to have on his face - just darling! My most favorite artist of all time!
Lyle’s voice is a gorgeous instrument to me. I love his music. I got to see him again at the Alberta Bair in Billings,MT with John Hiatt- another favorite of mine. I so love beautiful unique music. I absolutely love Tiny Desk - such a true pleasure. Thank you!
Met Lyle last year at MagFest in Florida, got to hang with him for a little, heard of him from my uncle growing up here and there, one of the sweetest guys I've ever met, I'm only 22, but he didn't think I knew he was, down to earth, and just an awesome guy. Total sweetheart!
I saw him once in concert in Vancouver BC and he was 2 minutes “late” and he apologized! He was amazing, he was charming and humble and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended. His professional approach and his humor was genuine and people just loved him.
I've been to 2 Lyle Lovett concerts... and his large band...both were uplifting and sweet. Takin you to church. I will go to the great beyond happily, now.
Second time I’ve seen this posting in as many months. Enjoying it even more the second time! Luke B on violin is a revelation: authentic, old-timey and contemporary at the same time. Amazing!
Thank you NPR for the Tiny Desk Series, and this inspiring edition. Love that Mr. Lovett made his own arrangements to appear - odd as a concert in an office is / was - and you shared that story with us. Here's to some version of Tiny Desk Concerts in 2022.
I've become a Lyle fan by watching Lee Sklar's You Tube videos of the current 2023 LL & the Large Band tour. I'm so glad this Tiny Desk was a recommended video today
How much music can two people make? This video answers that question.....it's like going to school. I have to keep coming back to this to remind me what's possible. Brilliant!
What an amazing talent these two share. Lyle's music and words speak to my heart, funny, touching; he has such rare qualities combined.I cannot get enough. I do not have a trained ear, but Luke sounds amazing. This 17 plus minutes is an absolute joy. Thank you for the music.
Lyle Lovett is just an amazing singer! The only thing I hate, sometimes when I hear one of his songs; I just can't get it out of my head! He is so original........what a great talent!
Lyle is up there with Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams..... the mix of captivating and poetic lyricism and incredible sense of melody in one person is extremely rare. A brilliant performer; loved him since I saw him and his Large Band support Dire Straits at Cardiff in June '92.
I grew up in the same community that Lyle Lovett grew up in, only a few years later. I have always liked him and admired his voice, clever lyrics and unusual melodies.
The melody of "If You Were To Wake Up" was composed by a preacher named William B. Stevens and was recorded in 1937 under the title "Farther Along" and has been recorded by dozens of other artists (including Trio -- Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris -- in 1987).
@@sjohnschafer Who insinuated that you insinuated anything? Why reply to my 100% factual comment with obfuscation and defensiveness? As I wrote earlier, Lovett wrote the lyrics (even though you just insinuated that he didn't).
I stumbled upon Lyle just recently and he has totally surprised me. I love his genuineness and how he speaks such wonderful words about Luke. What a great guy!
I have been listening to Lyle for almost 50 years. Always feels like an old friend. Thx for posting.
You can tell Lyle is moved by the fiddle accompaniment on this one…I don’t know how you couldn’t be. 🎻

Can never get enough Lyle. Makes me turn it up every time!!!!
Love this...And Luke is so damn articulate on that fiddle
Lyle’s voice is a gorgeous instrument to me. I love his music. I got to see him again at the Alberta Bair in Billings,MT with John Hiatt- another favorite of mine. I so love beautiful unique music. I absolutely love Tiny Desk - such a true pleasure. Thank you!
I'm sad I've missed out on hearing you till now. New fan here. Love that touch of country. And the fiddle player was top notch. Fan of his now to.
I wish I could "like" this more than once...
Agreed ❤
That was so great. "Good Intentions" was especially cool watching the violinist making it up as he went along.
Classy gentlemen playing classy tunes. Well done!
They are both awesome and I never realized lyle lovett has such a sweet heart.
My autobiography will be called "Pretend Like This Is Going Well." God love him.
I saw him once in concert in Vancouver BC and he was 2 minutes “late” and he apologized! He was amazing, he was charming and humble and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended. His professional approach and his humor was genuine and people just loved him.
Lyle Lovett. Luke Bulla. Two instruments, one voice. Result: Magic.
I've been to 2 Lyle Lovett concerts... and his large band...both were uplifting and sweet. Takin you to church. I will go to the great beyond happily, now.
What a gem. So glad to stumble upon Lyle Lovett...I have so much listening to catch up with.
Oh my. I am so jealous about all the great songs you get to discover. I wish I could hear them all for the first time again.
The Road to Ensenada is my favorite.
Second time I’ve seen this posting in as many months. Enjoying it even more the second time! Luke B on violin is a revelation: authentic, old-timey and contemporary at the same time. Amazing!
So pretty! Real music from real musicians. The contrast between Lyle's voice and Luke's violin is pure poetry.
Thank you NPR for the Tiny Desk Series, and this inspiring edition. Love that Mr. Lovett made his own arrangements to appear - odd as a concert in an office is / was - and you shared that story with us. Here's to some version of Tiny Desk Concerts in 2022.
Thank you Lyle Lovett
Amazing perfomance - One ot favorite Lyle songs.
Yes THANK YOU NPR FOR LOVELY SHARING OF GENUINE WORLD MUSIC THAT CONNECTS US ALL😊
I've become a Lyle fan by watching Lee Sklar's You Tube videos of the current 2023 LL & the Large Band tour. I'm so glad this Tiny Desk was a recommended video today
How much music can two people make? This video answers that question.....it's like going to school. I have to keep coming back to this to remind me what's possible. Brilliant!
Beautiful! Lovely fiddle. Nicely done, Sirs.
Lyle Lovett is an under-appreciated genius. I like his style, sense of humor & musicality. His fiddle player complements his singing perfectly.
What an amazing talent these two share. Lyle's music and words speak to my heart, funny, touching; he has such rare qualities combined.I cannot get enough. I do not have a trained ear, but Luke sounds amazing. This 17 plus minutes is an absolute joy. Thank you for the music.
Oh Lyle!!! You are truly a one and only. Low key LEGEND, consummate gentleman.
the embodiment of pure joy...can't love him enough! Pleasure to have seen him so many times
I absolutely love this man's music, lyrics and gentlemanly treatment of others.
Love this man. Never fails to amaze me. Saw him in Lawrence, KS last night...melts my heart every time!
Lyle Lovett is just an amazing singer! The only thing I hate, sometimes when I hear one of his songs; I just can't get it out of my head! He is so original........what a great talent!
Yes, a Lyle Lovett song stuck in your head, truly a trial, what a burden! :)))
Lucky you - this is the best of this series.
This set also serves as a fine illustration of why Lyle is sometimes referred to as a "vortex of calm."
He is the greatest song writer of our generation and he also is just an incredible person
Lyle is up there with Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams..... the mix of captivating and poetic lyricism and incredible sense of melody in one person is extremely rare. A brilliant performer; loved him since I saw him and his Large Band support Dire Straits at Cardiff in June '92.
He's way better than both of them. No disrespect to either.
I just got here after seeing Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On a Gravel Road and guess what... Tom Waits is favorite north american songwriter...
I’ve seen all three of them live, and I am a fan of all of them.
Always a great sound from Lyle. :-)
I'm very pleased to know I'm not the only one that loves the music of Lyle Lovett, but when last did you watch his favorite music!?
Lyle and Luke the best ! Ciao from Milano Italy ! Take care !
Thank you. This is exactly what my soul needs right now.
I grew up in the same community that Lyle Lovett grew up in, only a few years later. I have always liked him and admired his voice, clever lyrics and unusual melodies.
I am famous by association too; my mom was a teenager.

@@leonardshevlin7260 wasn’t even insinuating that he wrote these lyrics or composed this tune. I only meant exactly what I said. Nothing more or less.
@@sjohnschafer Who insinuated that you insinuated anything? Why reply to my 100% factual comment with obfuscation and defensiveness?
As I wrote earlier, Lovett wrote the lyrics (even though you just insinuated that he didn't).
That fiddle guy, holy moly, beautiful.
I met him on a flight to Houston and been a fan ever since. Nicest guy, very personable. We're lucky to be in his time.
I stumbled upon Lyle just recently and he has totally surprised me. I love his genuineness and how he speaks such wonderful words about Luke. What a great guy!
I've been watching this video for years, and I still just wanna sit with Lyle and a cup of coffee and a couple guitars.
A real treat for my ears, Lyle rocks.
