2nd photo looks like Ayala Westgrove? 😄 Anyway thanks for doing this!! A lot of people tend to disregard the profession and go straight to Civil Engineers to design-build their homes. However, good design really requires an Architect to oversee. You're making more people aware of the importance of hiring an Architect so thanks for making this video!

Thank you! 😊 This is a great point I forgot to include that architects are the proponent to good design! 😊

Thank you for this video, Erica & I'm so happy for your new project! I'm so looking forward to this new series in your channel since this will be very helpful when we'll move to Singapore. It would be the first time for us to build a home from the ground up and having it made to our preference. It's different here in the UK with planning permissions & very strict building regulations so although there were many things I wish I could have changed in the previous houses we lived in but because of historical reasons they were never approved and we end up adjusting our lifestyle to fit the houses we lived in, instead of having a home that serve us. I wonder if it's common for architects in South East Asia to already have their own in-house building team or do homeowners still have to hire from another firm? It would greatly help the client save time & stress if they know people who could implement the design with the architect's supervision. It is uncommon for people here to hire architects for their homes & instead just hire contractors/builders because it is cheaper & easier to buy an existing house on a property than to make a new one. Most are honest & good with their work but we have a lot of horror stories about construction fraud by fly-by-night contractors who fleeced their clients & never finish the job (let alone even start it).

Hi Leona, this is Tricia, the architect friend referenced in the video. To reply to your queries, for Southeast Asia, we also have our own set of laws per country, for both design and building. The practice of architecture/engineering is often separate from construction or contractor crews, to have a counterbalance on the quality of work, and your design consultants (architect, engineers, landscapers etc) is typically required to keep an eye over the work that the contractors produce and coordinate with the teams involved after the concept and technical drawing stage, as part of their services. Also, if it will be from the ground up, you will need the architect's help on procuring the building permits and occupancy permits as this will be a different kind of construction from a renovation or adaptive reuse. I hope that helps, or you can email me in the link Erica provided above, if you have other questions. Have a nice day! :)

@@triciaperdigon1009 Wow! I didn't expect to get a response so soon & one directly from you, Tricia! Thank you so much, it's now more clear to me and it really does seem that with that system, building a house is easier & more efficient in Southeast Asia than it is here in the UK. I shall save your email & will be corresponding in the future. In a way, this pandemic & Erica have saved us from making costly mistakes in our decisions on how to go about starting with that property my fiancé got for us to start our family. Again, thank you so much & I hope you have a wonderful day as well! :)

Tricia Perdigon, to convert an attached garage, do I need to hire an architect or a civil engineer? Thank you.

Hi Maria, sorry I didn’t see this. For a simple garage better to just coordinate with a builder, as long as you’re not crossing over any legal rules with regards to setback and if they can add drains, some electrical for lights and waterproofing, you should be fine, it falls under basic renovation. Unless your garage is a 10 car large one with a revolving display, the experienced builder should be able and flexible to handle what you need. Hope that helps! 😉

Thank you for this valuable information! I'm considering the addition of a pool and a pool house to my home. Does that fall under an architect or a landscape architect?

Suggestion- use a specialty design build pool maker, coupled with a gardening specialty design build that can spruce up your outdoor area. Hope that helps! - Erica’s architect friend

Do people need to hire a local architect or remote is okay?

Local is best as they are more familiar with the local culture and can visit the site themselves to get a better understanding of the surroundings

It really depends on your end goal; outsource can be utilized but that would entail a very close coordination. Thankfully covid years opened up so many avenues to communicate and it’s now easier to facilitate a true collaboration that goes beyond borders. Hope that helps - Erica’s Architect friend 😊
