Mumm Ra is impressive thanks to Earl Hammond's voice. Also overall the 80's original show is the only one that exists to me. Great artwork and voice acting.
Man, that intro of mum-ra scared the crap out of me as a 5 year old. I recall closing my eyes and ears every time he was in screen, at least during the intro. They did a great job.
From what I can understand from the original Thundercats series the Ancient Spirits of Evil started getting frustrated of Mumm-Ra's constant failures against the ThunderCats they threatened to banish him from Third Earth and they did that with some help from Snarf who went inside an ancient Thunderaian relic to learn how to defeat Mumm-Ra and he told Lion-O through the Sword of Omens that if Mumm-Ra failed to destroy the ThunderCats before sundown he would be stripped of his powers and banished from Third Earth and Lion-O did just that he didn't fight Mumm-Ra he just kept him busy dodging Mumm-Ra's attacks till they failed when the sun set and the last we saw of him and his dog MummMutt they were put inside some kind of sarcophagus and disappeared from sight and we all thought that was the end of him till he was brought back by the Ancient Spirits of Evil for one more chance and he still failed.
@@garysanders8350 Mumm-Ra has it too. In their biggest clash during Lion-O's annointment trials he destroyed Mumm-Ra's casket which did actually destroy him but the ancient spirits of evil revived him and his casket. There were a few other times including when they banished then retrieved him shortly after where he should have been destroyed for good but the Ancient spirits of evil always stepped in to change that
Yeah he was literally brought back the episode after he was banished because as soon as he was gone the Thundercat's went and blew up his pyramid which was also the ancient spirits base. They realized without Mumm-Ra to act as their avatar the Thundercats and their goodness would prevail and they didn't want that.
Did anyone else notice in the 2011 version the Ancient evil spirits were a crocodile, an ape, a jackal and a vulture. Who were Mumm-Ra's four top Generals again?
I think I am the only one who was sad after the 2011 TC’s reboot was cancelled. It has so much more potential and story to tell. The animation was on point.

Wow what a good point - well that almost brought a tear to my eye. I couldn't have said it better myself, in the 80s the best cartoons had an adult like emotional content people could die you could experience loss we would watch our shows knowing full well that if we didn't put our heart in this & back the heros or if our heros weren't smart or reckless maybe even give there all they could lose or even seriously harmed some characters could b killed. See at the end of most of our cartoons there would b a lesson or they would ask us what we learned now sometimes the lesson would b that sometimes things just can happen or if LionO was foolish or haughty maybe made a wrong assumption or failed to heed didn't listen to Jaga, we knew LionO would feel his mistake. These aspects made it real to all of us it made our minds strong & it touched our hearts. We knew the bully was the bad guy we knew Everything wasn't gonna be perfect for us and sometimes we're going to lose & it was ok
Yeah totally agree, western animation always would have the good guys punch the bad guys and vise versa only use a sword or whatever if it was a against a robot. I absolutely loved Robotech Anime because there were real stakes. Heroes died and was much more realistic in that respect.
"Ancient spirits of evil, transform this decayed form to Mumm-Ra, the Ever-Living!" "Moon Star of Limbo, give me the might, the muscle, the menace of Mon Star!"
Thank you for this video. I’ve watched Thunder Cats, but I didn’t know that much about it. And after watching this, it explains a lot about the Thunder Cats.
'The Eye of Thunderra can never be used for Evil' yeah I remember hearing that as Lion-O was scouting the area and he saw a herd of deer and was gonna use the sword on them till the sword pulled itself out of Lion-O's grasp and stayed still in the ground ignoring Lion-O till the spirit of Jagga appears and tells him that the sword will not be used for Evil or to harm others.
Remember what Jagga said to Lion-O the sword of Omens won't take a life it wasn't created for that it's not like the Swords of Earth with the exception of the legendary sword Excalibur which like the Sword of Omens won't be used for Evil and even though Lion-O wanted to hunt that herd of deer using the sword for that wasn't the way and from what I also remember about that second episode when the sword of Omens wrenched itself out of Lion-O's hand and refused to listen to him when he tried to pull it out of that tree it was like the sword was alive and I think it was.
The best episode in the earlier series was the one where Mumm-Ra gained control of Excaliber and then uses it to defeat Lion-O before being unmasked and defeated by Merlin
And I'll add to me he really stood out in the 80s. Skeletor was sitcomish and so was shredder and bebop. Step on shredders foot and he hops away. Skeletor had funny one liners. Meanwhile mumm ra was more "serious". He invaded their dreams, tried to cut off their food supply and planned to use acid to melt cats lair with them inside it. Shredder was more "turtles!" With pie on his face and mumm ra was more "I'm gonna melt the cats lair and turn you into soup". He was more of a "threat" and more scary. Megatron was much the same way. He wasn't laughing very much at all.
"The fight continues and Lion-O keeps struggling against Mumm-Ra's powers. In the process, several trees are knocked down as well". 😄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cheers 🥂 🇬🇧
Us 80s kids had the BEST cartoon and toy villains. Cobra Commander, Destro, Megatron, Starscream, Skeletor, Hordak, Mumm-Ra, Mon*Star, Miles Mayhem, King Zarkon, Cy-Kill, Dr. Claw, Shredder, Big Boss….. Edit- Only because he appeared more than once (most villains usually only had one episode) and he creeped me and a lot of other kids out, I’m including the Boogeyman from The Real Ghostbusters.
It was corny in some ways, probably mostly with the moralizations, but hey it was for kids! And it compensated with some seriously epic characters, art, and plots. No other cartoon has ever felt so sword & sorcery.
When I started watching Thundercats I was five. I didn't know of his back ground thanks to the comic. Silly thing to say. BUT thank you for making this because know I finally know the official background story to the og Mum-Ra.
Mumm-Ra just being plain evil from the start is refreshing. As opposed to having a mother named Martha that got killed in a alley, or having his mama shot dead by a hunter, which drove him into becoming what he became. Great stuff.
Wait..., does that mean that the Pharaoh mummified Mumm-Ra's dog? That is seriously messed up! 😧 Also being Egyptian, shouldn't he had a cat? 🤔🤓 Thank you for posting this very cool video. I love learning about the Thundercats. 💖🐱🦁🐯
I remember that episode where Mumm-Ra learned of Excalibur the legendary sword that was equal in power to the Sword of Omens and it was at the end of that episode where it was revealed that like the Sword of Omens Excalibur would not be used for Evil as like the Sword of Omens Excalibur ignored Mumm-Ra when he tried to pull the sword out of the ground to strike down Lion-O and the fact that Excalibur also recognized that Mumm-Ra was not King Arthur the legendary swords true master and I hate saying it about that episode which ironically was called 'Excalibur' it was amazing to see a duel between these 2 legendary and equally powerful swords.
IIRC, Excalibur actually defeated the Sword of Omens. Once it did so, it stopped, because.finishing its foe would be an act of evil. Personally, I think Excalibur only fought the SoO because it wanted to test its might. Like two knights jousting in a tournament.
@@RedneckSith Yeah you're right and remember how both swords went flying out of Lion-O and Mumm-Ra's hands and had an aerial battle between each other as everyone on both sides watched.

He did his conquest and just wanted to retire. no one on the planet could go toe to toe with him. He just wanted the cats gone and mostly because of the eye of thundara I speculate. It’s weird how when as a kid you see him as the bad guy but older you can see he just wanted the peace back as the cats got in to Everything disrupting the balance.
A being that truly worships evil and you think he wanted peace. He wants evil. But he's also stuck in a region. That's why he tries to get out. He follows them to their planet. If he just wanted peace it wouldn't make sense to attack them.
@@DSan-kl2yc well he didn’t mess with the inhabitants and stayed in his pyramid till the thunder cats started to mess with the balance. Then he would of went back to resting in his tomb. Just because someone is evil doesn’t mean they constantly cause issues. Everyone knew not to go to his area where his pyramid was. He conquered his planet and wanted to rest. Good and evil was in balance and the cats distributed that balance by first aiding the burbles

This is really cool and left me thinking other than just sealing him away, what if following that the 4 statues and his entire lair was destroyed and then covered with a solid massive cube constructed of whatever was used to build the Thundercats base. I mean sure it won't kill him, but I'd imagine the 4 evil gods would hold mumra to needing to rebuild all that over again, after he managed to get out from his tomb underneath the massive Thundercube though lol I mean I'd have to assume that might at least give more time than before of being undisturbed by mumra lol
There are two things that, to me, make Mum-Ra seem like a tragic figure from the original series: 1... He often talked to himself. Not too big a deal until you realize that he never lies to himself. In fact, a plausible explanation of why his reflection hurts him is because it makes him see the truth of what he has become and he doesn't like it. 2... It was often hinted that the reason why he attacked the Thundercats so much was because they were responsible for waking him up. Their existence on Third Earth was the reason he was not allowed to find his peace. He even says this early on by telling the Thundercats that it was them who were disturbing his sleep.
Plus the Thundercats were alien invaders from Mum-Ra's point of view. They strolled into his territory uninvited and started a fight with his citizens, the mutants. So he was only fighting the Thundercats to defend his territory and his people.
I watched the original Thundercats back in the 1980s I always thought the Thundercats were the real villains of the show. They invaded and colonized Mum-Ra's planet.
I hope we actually do get a thunder cats movie been in limbo for a very long time yes toy sales haven't helped and getting it checked to see if it's safe enough but for me it's how I enjoyed watching it on a Saturday morning especially on going live on BBC one those were the days 😊😊😊
I had a flashback of that raven from DC and Mumma ra- from thundercats both of them haven capes around their back but when both of them turn to their scary forms they become buff
Mumm-Ra is such a great character in the original cartoon. Everything about him is great. The remake just doesn’t capture that feeling of an absolute villain. I think that’s the problem of modern times. We always seek to vilify the heroes and humanise the villains. Some characters don’t need to be complex. Just look at the Joker in The Dark Knight. He doesn’t have a backstory, even though there are implications and some fake stories he tells himself, but all he does is make shit go bang, foil the hero at every turn and push him to the limit of his beliefs. Some people just want to watch the world burn, and someone has to put out the fire.
Or Darth Vader before the prequels. I never wanted to see him as a kid or a teen - he was a thousand times more intimidating as a bastion of pure evil, with only the excellent redemptive twist at the end.
It was always interesting....How powerful he was (and now, knowing it more so after this history lessin) Yet can easily be beating by these Cat people.

@@ikec2894 it not a unique perspective it's actually what's happening.
@@trejohnson4760 I get that. What I meant was I always thought of him as just being the bad guy ( which he is)
I watched the original Thundercats back in the 1980s I always thought the Thundercats were the real villains of the show. They invaded and colonized Mum-Ra's planet.
MarrrrMUTT
Mumrah sounds like a cool dude really
I hope we actually do get a thunder cats movie been in limbo for a very long time yes toy sales haven't helped and getting it checked to see if it's safe enough but for me it's how I enjoyed watching it on a Saturday morning especially on going live on BBC one those were the days 😊😊😊
THE 80'Z CARTOONS WAZ THE SH#@¡¡¡¡¡
Actually he is the planet’s protector and the Thundercats are the invaders
Wait. So...the Thunder Cats are like the early Europeans who came to what would become America & Mum'Ra is like the Native Americans ?
Really!
😂😂😂😂😂😂

If only someone knew about Holy Water.
Bless a ton of it and dump it his caldron.
Wonder how that would have worked.
I had a flashback of that raven from DC and Mumma ra- from thundercats both of them haven capes around their back but when both of them turn to their scary forms they become buff
I always preferred his brother Bummra, waaaaaay more fun at parties.
In the 80s our cartoons taught us so we weren't dumb compared to the new cartoons and their generation.
I hear that he was born that way . !
Great job bro, If Bel-Air can be sent into production from RUclips someone needs to see this. 4 movies or a reboot can come out of this.
Please do Mumm-Rana
Dude you crazy!
ThunderCats is a much liked cartoon.
The first thought when I see Mumm-Ra, is this Eddie, the mascot of Iron Maiden?😄
" Ancient Spirits Of Evil! Transform this decade form to MUMM-RA, THE EVER LIVING!!!"
- Mumm-Ra ( Thundercats)
@@Don-ol8zeBut than we wouldn't have the great mythology established within the prequels including the Clone Wars series and Ahsoka Tano 😊.
The Devil Priest!!!!
The 80 version was magicalll
Old school cartoons were the best
Purely evil villains are something I think media needs. Tired of these redemption arcs or sad back stories for why some turned “bad.”
His character design is amazing, I had the action figures, the castle of grey skull.. the toys were well made for it’s time..
You're thinking about He-Man bro!
@@corwinjkabuki I was just thinking castle of grey skull (which was actually green for some reason)was he-man not thundercats
I had both Thundercats and He-Man toys. Including Mumm- Ra and Ma-Mutt and Skeletor and Panthor
Yep that reboot would have been epic had it stayed longer...
Mumra ....... 80s pre workout pills were the shit
"Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this decayed form to Mumm-Ra, the Ever Living."
Mumm-Ra the defender of planet Earth.
Who was evil but not really a tyrant since he pass almost all of his time asleep.
💀👁️mumm insane evil 🌀💯
It was always interesting....How powerful he was (and now, knowing it more so after this history lessin) Yet can easily be beating by these Cat people.
Nice! Now do a mirror episode where Mumm-Ra is the protagonist and Liono is the leader of the evil invaders.
1:55 start here
Thank you
@@DeitrichDavis someone has to do it. :P
Blast from the past.
The thunder cats was trespassing in his own world.
