Don't get me wrong, I love me a LS swap.. especially in pre coyote mustangs.. but don't think about putting one in anything that starts with Rotary eXperimental..
Long story short I was riding dirt bikes at a buddy house and I had to borrow his neighbors tools to fix something on my bike as I walk into his backyard to the shed over in the corner I see a beautiful(dust covered ) FC Rx7 sitting under a tree .. I sat and talk to him for nearly an hour about it .. rotaries are very much alive
I'll NEVER forget the styling of this car. I had to stare at a RHD FD Rx-7 everyday at the old body shop I worked at. It sat outside/inside for 3 years before we restored it. Silver, It looked beautiful.
Amazing cars and engines. I grew up to love GM stuff and naturally have a knack for LS engines, but if I ever get my hands on an RX7 you best believe she's keeping the 13B! Or if I hit the lotto, a 20B! :) Rotaries burn oil, kind of a pain to get big power out of, and not many people nationwide know how to tune them properly (in comparison), but man they are cool engines. FD RX7s are definitely one of the coolest cars of my generation.
Marcus Mar treat it like a dirt bike it’s pretty straight forward and learn what it needs. The issue is cooling and fueling They were under fueled for years and had people who didn’t understand them
@@commandlion8667 if your rotary is using a quart a week you've got SERIOUS problems! I change my oil every 3000kms and I barely need to add any oil to it between oil changes.
Hell yes dude! Loved the video! It’s awesome to see such a nice reception to the rotary, I appreciate the hard work man! I’ve been waiting patiently to see this come together. 👍🏻
That kind of big single turbo conversion changes the character of the RX7 so much. You need to try one stock or with minor upgrades that keeps the sequential twin turbos. Its such a smooth car to drive and actually has good low end torque!
just great to see someone actually enjoying the cars he reviews.. so many others on utubes hardly even crack a smile.. not YOU!!! haha love the vid, altho this might not b the prettiest example of an FD, still adore the style and sound! i drove rotaries fer almost 15y and never had 1 blow.. but religious attention to oil check/fill/change or maybe i just got lucky haha
David, they stopped producing the FD because of emissions and if I’m not mistaken because people just simply couldn’t afford the sports car price since the Miata came out it stole the limelight. And also to touch up on what you said. The 12A and 13b-resi (2rotor) came in the SA & FB the 13b turbo(2rotor) came in the FC the 13b-rew (2rotor) came in the FD. The 20b-rew(3 rotor) came in the Eunos cosmo. The R26b was only in the Mazda 787b but a shop called PPRE in New Zealand custom build 4 rotor blocks for people to swap in their rotary cars
I also heard randomly once that the FD was pulled from the line up in 1996 when Ford bought 33% of Mazda stock. Aside from that, looking at the sales figures over 1993, 94, 95, you'd see lower sales overall and then to a big drop. In 1995 only 500 units were sold. The R26B in the 787B is different than the other because it uses two thick intermediate housings like the 20B. PPRE and other engine manufactures use two thin intermediate ones from a 13B that require machine work to fit a stationary gear. The 787B probably used the larger 13G Racing 3rotor bearings I would guess too. The new shop built 4 rotors are nice since they're shorter and lighter (the thick cast iron housings weight a bit). Also, to chime in the street port does not give a rotary its distinct brap brap sound. Bridgeports, j-ports, semi peripheral ports/ full peripheral ports make it have the brap brap sound.
TheHRookie ^ yes! Couldn’t have said it better. The brass start at Bridgeport and above! Have you seen formulaseven’s rx-7? I believe he used a ppre block and had a custom manifold made that is identical to the one from the 787b so that’s why his sounds extremely close to it!
TheHRookie the FD had no issue selling in the rest of the world. Japan has it until 2002 and they revived probably the best FD from production (spirit-r)
TheHRookie You can expect to start hearing the loping idle with a large street port, step up from that would be a half bridge, then the full bridge. The engine in the video has a mild street port and at times has a loping idle.
TheNuke95, Yeah I've heard formulaseven's car! Sounds pretty wild for a street car lol.. I also really liked his old 3 rotor as well. Both sound so good. Yeah I know Japan had the FD till 2002. Just saying for us in the states, the sales numbers were low. Europe wasn't selling them so hot either. I didn't really ever look at the figures for Australia and Japan over the production years. I know Australia received some special editions. Adding to what you said, I've wondered if the people who were interested in the car didn't have the cash, and the people who did have the cash debated what other cool cars they could drop that money on. Corey Hough, Yeah, I suppose if you do have a large street port you'll get some overlap, and it will start to. Of the typical street ports I feel like its not near as distinctive. I don't really go around searching/listening to street ports though either lol. I'm probably biased. I want to build my FD into an N/A car, so I don't really search for street porting info I guess.
HKS HiPower has always been my fav exhaust for the 13B's... funny how I was like, that one doesn't sound bad (typically don't like the sound). Makes sense now, great video sir!
Alvin Ameyaw well I heard Mazda can make a new Rotary engine and they still want too.. they just don't got the funds for development yet to actually put it into the production line and research so it remains on the back burner.. but it definitely is possible as of today!
Jordan Price yea, I saw an article last month that they will ACTUALLY do it this time, because they have more support, it's sad because random people has "perfected" their rotaries to an extent, I think if they adjust some internal shapes they can do it. Also they make unbreakable Apex seals so it's possible bro! If they do that'll be the first car I buy new 😎

i love rotarys so much they are so much simpler and if u take care of them they will be pretty reliable haha my dads rx8 lasted 132k before it lost compression. the fc is my alltime favorite rx8 haha looks like a spaceship
I always love the RX7 hated the RX-8. The RX7 was one of Mazda best cars ever made and still to this day it looks better then most of the current 2 doors sport cars. I have a S2K which is a totally different car. Never could find a nice clean RX7 all original. If you guys come across one buy it they will be collectibles just like the Honda S2000 is.
Gerrit-Jan Bergwerf All 4 rotors are custom built. You can't just get your hands on the one and only Le Mans winning rotary. Not really sure if its a common misconception or just people trying to say that its the same type of engine.
You are correct. All 4 rotors have to be custom built. One feature that makes the 787b 4 rotor unique is 3 spark plugs per rotor vs the normal 2 on all other rotaries. Along with a myriad of other features.
That is the sound every car enthusiast is looking for . Next project for my NC Miata will be 2 or 3 rotors swap. I just got 2.5 swap and when that one dies it is doritos time .
Thanks so much for watching this! This one was a long time coming.

i love rotarys so much they are so much simpler and if u take care of them they will be pretty reliable haha my dads rx8 lasted 132k before it lost compression. the fc is my alltime favorite rx8 haha looks like a spaceship
This car looks so good I hope they bring it back some day.
My B16B Turbo swapped DC2 revs past 9k as well.
Thatb0iRay yeah because vtec yo joke aside they are fun. Same as the rotary. Especially rotarys that spin to 14k rpm
"if you don't love the rotary don't own one" replace the word "one" with "RX-7" and I wholeheartedly agree. 100%
More than likely going to be my next car. Along side my 1993 Audi S4 and my 1973 240Z
this is one of my good friend's cars, he actually built this whole thing!!!!
im pretty sure the 26br(in mad mikes car) is not from a 787b, while those had 4 rotors, mad mikes one is custom built(im pretty sure)
Gerrit-Jan, you are correct. All of Mad Mike's engines are built by Pulse Performance Race Engineering (PPRE) out of New Zealand.
I think it'd be super cool if they (Mazda) did another rotary motor
Now onto Rib Dahm’s big turbo 3 rotor and after that the AWD big turbo 4 rotor😍
Thank you for making an Rx-7 Video
Just now had time to watch, but I did get the notification David
braaaaaaaaaap
Tjenare ;)
Haha tja ;) Fan den här 7an hade man ej tackat nej till!
7liefen är ju en bättre sjua
stustustustututu!
in the late 90s the cars had premature apex seal failure causing the car to loose compression, now we have composites that have fixed that
That idle sounds so good!!
awesome!!! do more rotarys. a 3rotor for an instance !
The 26B in Madmike's car is inspired by the 787b's 26B, not the same unit. Just 4 rotor housings and there you go (in a nutshell) dream engine btw.
That is the sound every car enthusiast is looking for . Next project for my NC Miata will be 2 or 3 rotors swap. I just got 2.5 swap and when that one dies it is doritos time .
Brapedy Brap
YES AT LAST. THANK YOU SO MUCH! BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP!!!!!!
The rotary will live on in spirit. Spirit R of course
