This is what I love about the game. It is so complex that asking yourself a question: "what would I do IRL" actually helps you solving problems in game.
In my experience potatoes are durable enough to survive until harvest if you planted them outside in winter without even being watered by the player. You just have to wait a extra 2-3 weeks for them to grow since they will be in terrible condition most of the time and some will recede but you will still get enough to sustain your character until the next harvest with 3 potato packs. What happens is it'll snow like once every 1-2 weeks and during the day it will get warm enough to sleet/rain for a hour and water the crops that way for a few days and it will hold the crop over until the next storm. Seriously just raid a farm warehouse, a farmer store, or kill farmer zombies since they have seeds because potatoes take on average 3 weeks to grow while taking 28 days to rot unrefrigerated while restoring a lot of calories and can be used as bait in trapping with decent odds. They are god tier in game just like real life
@@jet-fury keep them in a well isolated space away from light and fresh air like a cupboard or your cellar, preferably even cover them with a tarp or at least a thin blanket and they will last you a year
These tutorials are great! Really helped me to understand a lot of things. Project Zomboid is such a vast game with so many details and I don't know how I will learn it all
Watching your tutorial videos has single-handedly convinced me to try the game again, and give it a fair shake. It's hard to find a guide for this game that (IMO) balances adequate detail with brevity. You nailed it.
So far im still depending on the canned food as it can be obtained everywhere but farming, is very rewarding for example the cabbages. They gives you alot of it and you dont have to worry about going hungry unless you dont have a generator thats where you need to start worrying since cabbages can go rotten. Another tips for beginner, dont take too lightly with frying pan, most people tend to avoid them in their early games. Frying pan have one of the most high speed attack rate in game. Even though the damage arent as good as other weapon but you can easily mow down a horde if you know the basics on when to push, and when to engage

Pyke got me good, well done. Also thanks a bunch for the guides, finally just started playing and these have helped a tremendous amount. Appreciate the work you put into your videos!
Potatoes are the best farmable to have as a somewhat durable snack or cooking ingredient (multiple days until they just get stale), but neither your farm nor your foraging will give you enough calories to be active all day. By living near a natural water source, you can have that sweet oily fish whenever you loose too much weight and balance your weight gain/loss.
So much quality info in this series! Even as someone that's been poking at the game on and off since 2013 there's always new things to learn, especially with all the changes and improvements! I didn't have a clue that umbrellas helped foraging in the rain for example. Great stuff, keep it up mate!

i love how for a realistic game the perch world model is like 4 times bigger then the largest perch EVER caught i couldnt stand putting a can of soup on the table and it take up a quarter of the table
i find that if you're a new player, you should wear jeans and sneakers. then you'll run faster. once you get combat down good, then move to the combat boots. always grab leather clothing. keep a stock for yourself, rip up the rest for leather scrap. then add the leather to the leather gear you kept. when new, stay to looting the houses around where you make your base/safehouse. when you get better and learn the map and start over, go straight to the places that have fresh meats and veggies. then start looking for a generator and book. much easier to level cooking with fresh foods and the canned foods in houses arent going anywhere.

Honestly as far as i know, there is no real benefit in crouching\aiming while foraging, outside of increasing your zone, in wich you can find your loot. Even then it's just faster to stick to just sneaking, or abolishing this concept all together, and just walking Also i myself find myself with so many empty bottles\bowls\just random cookware that can hold liquid, that i just stick to building like 10 rain barrels, which is enough for sustaining up to 5 people, on normal Nature settings. I suggest trying to stock up on things like wild garlic, rose hips, and mushrooms. Grape leaves, and other things you can forage for, are good to, but there is no real need to having them. 2 herbs are going a long way, if all you eat are fish fillets, fried with fish and fish
Actually, this isn't true. A lot of those traits, like the Gardener trait you mentioned, do have an important impact on your foraging skills, that's why depending on your method of survival, they do make a difference (the magazines only teach the recipes, they don't give the trait as far as I know). I always run those traits for my go-to build which is a Forest Ranger. I do make survivalist choices like I would in real life, choices I consider smart and for long-term survival. Builds like the Burglar one are good for beginners, players who aren't expected to survive on the long-term so they can have fun during their short life. I like to live on the farm to the west of Muldraugh (South-East of Doe Valley) lost in the woods and where there is a well. I think this place will also be awesome in build 42 when we will have farm animals as there is everything you need for them there too. It is also a farmhouse with a floor, which make it pretty good if you play with a dangerous zombie population or mods that had random horde attacks. I build a whole 3 blocks wide terrasse around the house and fence around it to add my sheet ropes (escape), and of course I barricade my windows with metal bars only and add actually curtains to all the windows so I don't lose sight (and natural light). There is also an antique oven in the shed South-East of the farm, which is perfect to add next to the oven in the kitchen. I swear I'm living living my best Stardew Valley Zomboid style life... 😂
You underestimate the power of the extra 33 percent chance to get junk while foraging as repairman, this includes weapons, magazines, tarps and camping gear (I think), and more.
Actually, I usually find some cooking pots or buckets for water reserves then find generator and generator manual. In my apocalypse mode, I dont think farming alot could be great option for me because it cost a lot of time doing so.
I know it ain't very RPG of me, but could you literally only fish and have all the food you need forever? Honest question, can you, is there a nutrition penalty of any kind? Thanks for your vid btw, great pz content, I could see you go as far as guys like predz or lime
Twine is only needed in fishing and not in huge quantities for that. Don't know why waste twine on log walls when you can make them with ripped sheets or why bother with bird traps when catching rabbits is maybe 10x better and costs only planks/nails. Cheaper and more effective. Twine is not underrated at all. It's mostly useless and only really useful for 1 activity which won't be bottlenecked by lack of twine, but rather by lack of baits so while gathering it is not entirely useless, you can stop taking it when your base has +10 of it. If it comes to the worst survive off of the millions of non-perishables until you find a few cars and you are good for another few months of survival.
Project Zomboid is so complicated that I might as well learn foraging, farming etc. in real life lol.

Honestly as far as i know, there is no real benefit in crouching\aiming while foraging, outside of increasing your zone, in wich you can find your loot. Even then it's just faster to stick to just sneaking, or abolishing this concept all together, and just walking
Also i myself find myself with so many empty bottles\bowls\just random cookware that can hold liquid, that i just stick to building like 10 rain barrels, which is enough for sustaining up to 5 people, on normal Nature settings.

Trapping might be decent, but honestly untill you start working out (the more protein you eat, more effective the workouts are) there is no real need for it. Maybe you would like to have a good stew, but i find better to just make stirr fry out of random veggies, and eat a tonne of fish, that i caught
And if you find yourself stranded with just fish, a frying pan, and nothing else, forage for herbs, since they provide a healthy mood boost to your meals. I suggest trying to stock up on things like wild garlic, rose hips, and mushrooms.
